The University of Suffolk is compact—with us, you’re a name, not a number.
You will get to know your course team, library, and support staff, a community of people on-site to ease your academic journey. And then there is the Students’ Union (SU) and all the activities run by your societies, that help you to get introduced to the 3000 students studying alongside you.
University is a chance to try new things, meet new people, and be yourself.

Where to start
The best place to start is the course list (there’s one at the back of this guide), find a subject or area that really interests you, then read up on your options—our website is a great introduction.
There are lots of different ways to study for a degree, not all classroom based. Some of our courses are taught in partnership with employers, or you might want to consider a more vocational subject with placements, real-world projects or workplace learning alongside your classroom study.
Once you have an idea of a subject area we can help, come to an Open Day and have a chat with our staff. It is our job to help you find the route of study that best suits you.

Ipswich has great cafes, shops, bars and activities, fantastic beaches and outstanding countryside, easily accessible using public transport.
Affordable living, with London and Cambridge just an hour away—we give you the best of both worlds. We are a close-knit community, forming friendships and supporting each other in an area that is great for exploring, but jump on a train and you are in central London meeting friends and family for a day (or night) out.

The Students’ Union (SU) is all yours. Run by students, for students, you get to decide who is elected and what they deliver.
Organising socials and get togethers from the moment you arrive and throughout the year, they help you to find your feet, make friends, and stay fit while you study. Hosting sports clubs, exercise classes and cultural events, there is plenty of choice, and if you can’t find what you like, you can set it up yourself. The SU also run a shop, a social space, and an advice service, all designed to fit your needs while you study.
The SU works closely with local sporting facilities and strives to offer a variety of activity options. Social Sport is currently free, and there are also teams you can join if you want to satisfy your competitive streak!

A greener campus
97% of our waste is recycled

of our electricity comes from verifiable renewable sources
Our commitment to sustainability informs our major decision-making in three key areas:
On campus: we continually improve our resource efficiency, pollution elimination, zero carbon infrastructure and transport, and urban biodiversity networks.
Curriculum: students are the next generation of behaviour change influencers and ours are working on research collaborations through our Suffolk Sustainability Institute or other centres.
Community: we actively provide knowledge and project support across the region. Our Smart House, a recent collaboration completed in 2022, is a sustainable home, testing materials and infrastructure to aid design, build techniques and occupation.
Last academic year we achieved a 97% recycling rate placing us in the Top 10 People and Planet League Table for Waste and Recycling and, since April 2022, over 90% of the University’s electricity has been generated from verifiable renewable sources.

There are lots of ways you can enhance your future job prospects while you study, and we can help.
Opportunities can come from your course, an outside interest or an SU society, perhaps as an intern, a placement, volunteer, or even paid work from our Jobs Board.

Managing your money is an important part of student life and our Student Finance team will be there to give you advice and guidance along the way.

Our Student Life team describe themselves as “google for the University”—there isn’t anything that they haven’t been asked before! They direct you to support services across the University and are on-hand to answer your questions, from day one, right through to graduation.
