On every college campus, finding a place to call home is crucial to fulfilling students’ academic and social growth. The University of Utah is no exception. With our student population of over 30,000, our hope is that the A. Ray Olpin Union building will be your home away from home. An important goal of the Union is to complement the students’ academic experience through an extensive variety of cultural, educational, social, and recreational programs. It is through such opportunities that a real sense of college community develops.

Traveling and Studying! By Jennifer Mastroianni

Costa Rica, France, Italy, and Japan are only a few of the many places the University’s Learning Abroad department has programs located! In 2017 the University of Utah sent 459 students abroad and the number is only increasing each year. Learning Abroad seeks to positively impact students, the campus, and the community by fostering connections between the University of Utah and the world. We provide global education experiences to students both on and off campus, including a wide variety of signature learning opportunities through learning abroad programs world wide. We also coordinate and track international activities and programs across the University and work closely with other academic and staff organizations to make the University of Utah a truly international institution. The Great Outdoors By Jackie Larsen

Amid the sea of Chaco-wearing, Patagonia-donning, granola-eating students found at the University of Utah, there exists a minority group whose outdoor experiences are few and far between. Our campus sits at the base of the beautiful Wasatch mountains, which are home to a vast array of recreational activities. It’s no mystery as to why the U is attractive to so many students with a passion for the great outdoors. However, if you’re a current student at the U who doesn’t fit this profile exactly—no worries! When I entered the U as a freshman, the extent of my outdoor experience was the shortcut I would take through some trees to get to my car after work. I was determined to change this, however, and did exactly that with the help of the U’s robust collection of PRT classes. PRT stands for Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, and this department offers a plethora of exciting courses in activities like paddleboard yoga, backpacking, snowshoeing, outdoor cooking, and more! My first semester, I signed up for a 2 credit course called Autumn Backpacking. I knew absolutely nothing about backpacking, but I figured that since I wore a backpack every day to class and had no qualms with the season of Autumn, this might be a good fit. The entire class consisted of one weekend trip exploring the Uinta mountains, and although the backpack proved to be MUCH larger than I suspected, I ended up having the time of my life. The instructor taught us principles of Leave No Trace, familiarized us with the local wildlife and plant life, and facilitated group discussion. I came home sore, feet covered in blisters, and with two promises to myself. First—to never, ever hike in Nike running shoes again, and second—to sign up for another backpacking course in the spring. Since that first trip, I’ve topped off my schedule each semester with PRT courses. Although I still have tons to learn about outdoor recreation, I’m happy to report that I’ve since bought myself a decent pair of hiking boots and have transformed my noodle thighs into a little bit of muscle. Whether you’re an avid rock climber, an occasional hiker, or a newbie just as I was, the PRT department has an impressive variety of classes for all interests. Whether you take one to learn a new skill or to fulfill a minimum credit hour requirement, I recommend them to everyone. And, if you’re not too keen on going off campus, they even offer classes in the Union like bowling, billiards, and table tennis. The possibilities are endless!

Get out there!

FIRST YEAR INVOLVEMENT by Austin Matsuura

The University of Utah is full of endless opportunities, academic and extracurricular alike. Although college is geared towards higher education, there are many other things to take away from these next four years. First-year involvement is one of the most crucial parts of your college career, because it opens doors to bigger and better opportunities that you wouldn’t have had access to before. For first-years, the involvement opportunities are endless. You get to pick from over 300 different clubs and student organizations here on campus. Some are even geared towards incoming first-years: • FYC is a part of our student government of campus known as ASUU. They handle many technical aspects for student organizations here on campus as well as plan occasional events. • The Bennion Center is located in the Union if you are interested in community service and volunteering. Every student organization and graduate school looks at community service, so it’s a great idea to be involved in something such as Alternative Breaks through the Bennion Center. • FAB or the Freshman Ambassador Board is part of a student organization known as UPC. This board is geared towards incoming first-years who want to achieve personal and professional growth, as well as learn how to plan fun and successful events. It is a great stepping stone into student leadership, teaching you various skills to succeed around campus and in your future careers. What ever it may be, just get involved. This will make your college experience extremely rewarding as well as enjoyable. Each student organization comes with their own benefits as well, whether that be renting your books for you, a semester stipend, or paying for your tuition. The opportunities are endless. Firstyear involvement will change your college experience.

Take Notes

Taking notes in class is hard sometimes. It is easy to use the justification that, “Oh everything is online, I’ll just use my professor’s slides to study”. In reality, taking notes does more than just save information for studying later; it actually helps solidify the information in your mind because you are using more of your senses to process the information. Review your notes once every day and make note cards of the key points and vocabulary.

Keep a Planner Being organized and disciplined with your time will create more openings in your schedule that you can use to complete homework and projects faster

and more efficiently. The ironic thing is that if you plan your days with the important things in mind first, you will end up with more time to involve yourself socially.

Study Time is Study Time Giving yourself time to complete your work is not always enough. I know for a fact that everyone has experienced distraction while studying, whether it’s texts from friends, social media feeds or notifications, falling into an endless Youtube thread, or being on the third floor of the “lib”. This may be one of the harder tips to implement because it requires the most discipline. Turn off your phone. You don’t need it. Do not get on social media. If you really struggle with it, consider downloading tools that can lock you out of social media or other websites like ColdTurkey or StudyLock. These can be helpful to lock you out of distractions for a selected period of time allowing you the serenity you need to get your work done.

Try something new for the foodie in u Written by Brooke Newhall

Gourmet Burger at Lucky 13 Pub

Try some SLC Favorites!

Let’s be honest—when it comes to food, you shouldn’t mess around. Eating is more than just satisfying hunger but having an experience with the people you go with! So stop going to the same old restaurants you always go to and try something new! In no particular order...

Ruth’s Diner: 4160 Emigration Canyon Rd, Salt Lake City, UT 84108

Classic. Ruth’s Diner has been around since the 1930s serving food 8am-10pm 7 days a week! Go back in time to this one-of-a-kind diner but make sure you go early; this hidden gem in Emigration Canyon fills up quickly! Make sure to try one of Ruth’s favorites!

Lucky 13: 135 W 1300 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84115

This is like a “we’ve been hanging out long enough you can see me eat ugly” type of place. The burgers are mammoth with a thirst-clenching flavor, the buns homemade, and the meat juicy and fresh—their burgers don’t mess around! Sorry not sorry to the youngsters—it’s a 21 and older place! There’s nothing more satisfying than a juicy burger (above) with a cold beer.

The Pie Pizzeria: 1320 E 200 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84102

Wanna pizza me? Giant pizza served with a heart attack, this greasy pizza is a campus favorite and a classic University of Utah experience! The Pie Pizzeria is not only a filling experience but is where the term Freshmen 15 came from, if you catch my drift.

Stone Ground: 249 E 400 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84111

For a more upscale dining experience, Stone Ground has awesome Italian food. The secret is to go on Sundays for their “all you can eat” pasta and pizza.

Sawadee Thai Restaurant: 754 S Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84102

Thai food anyone? If you haven’t had Thai food before this is the place to go! The food has an incredible flavor for both spice lovers and haters. Haters gonna hate but you won’t be hatin’ Sawadee once you go! The portions are huge so there are always leftovers and who doesn’t love leftovers, especially when the leftovers still taste delicious!

Bombay House: 2731 Parleys Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84109

Are you game for spicy food? Spice up your digestive system with some Indian food! Go to an authentic Indian restaurant with five-star food and service! Bombay is hidden by the Walmart on Foothill Dr. (yes, a 24-hour Walmart hidden on Foothill Dr.)

Ichiban Sushi: 336 400 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84111

Want sushi that makes you feel like you are on the coast? Ichiban is the place for you! They have multiple locations but this one is definitely the best!

Wing Coop: 3971 Wasatch Blvd, Salt Lake City, UT 84124

Ain’t no thang like a chicken wing! Dinner for two? The Wednesday Special is 20 Wings, Two Drinks and Fries for $20! Take a friend, a special someone or someone you know will pay and grab yourself some awesome wings with “out of this world”, I can’t even, flavor.

Dolcetti Gelato: 902 E 900 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84105

Don’t stop at dinner! It’s time for dessert! Hang out at 9th and 9th and grab some gelato! They have many unique flavors; my personal favorite is their white wine gelato! Yum!

Ruby Snap Cookies: 770 300 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84101

WTF (What the frosting)?! Frosting on a cookie? Why didn’t I think of that! Oh snap! It’s a tiny shop on 3rd West. Don’t worry you can also get their cookie dough at Harmon’s grocery stores, It doesn’t include their icing and what’s a cookie without icing? Make sure to checkout their store and get a sample before deciding what cookies you want to get! I’m a sucker for their Mia cookie.

Crimson View: 200 S Central Campus Dr. (aka the Union!)

If you’re smart, you would have recognized that this address is on campus. Yes, a sit down lunch restaurant on our campus (also available for catered events in the evening)! On the top floor of the Union building, have yourself a little getaway from school and eat! As an additional plus, meal plan flex dollars are accepted here. Sometimes the best things are right where U are!

You could be here!

Incheon, South Korea

Expand your Horizons by Chelsea Sather

Are you interested in studying abroad? Did you know that the University of Utah has a global campus? In 2014, the University of Utah opened an Asia campus in South Korea. This campus makes it even easier for Utah students to extend their studies internationally.

Where is it located? The University of Utah was one of the founding institutions of the Incheon Global Campus (IGC) in Incheon, South Korea. The area of Incheon that the campus is located is in Songdo, which is a manmade island connected by bridge to the rest of Korea. The Utah Asia Campus shares a global campus community with The State University of New York, George Mason University, and Ghent University. Facilities on-campus include music rooms, various event halls, a sports complex, a library, and a pool. You are a ten-minute walk from a subway stop that can take you to other areas of Korea, such as Seoul. In Seoul there are historical landmarks, palaces, museum exhibitions, shopping, and various other attractions.

What majors are offered at the Utah Asia Campus? Any University of Utah student is eligible to study at the Utah Asia Campus. The majors offered include undergraduate majors in Communication, Psychology, Film & Media Arts, and Urban Ecology The graduate programs offered are a Master of Biomedical Informatics and a Master of Public Health. Students who start their education at the Utah Asia Campus are required to spend two semesters in Salt Lake City to complete their degree. Fall of 2017 the Union Programming Council went global, adding a programming board to the Utah Asia Campus. During our first year of programming on the Asia campus UPC hosted Earth Week, Pride Week, a movie night, and a dance party open to all institutions on the global campus. We are excited to see programming continue on the Asia campus and hope you all get a chance to visit during your time at the University of Utah. How to not be the broke college student by Bailey Johannsen Tip 1. Keep a budget

$

For some people college can be a difficult time to handle your own money for the first time. Not only do you have class, homework, and work but now you must keep track of your own money and ALL your expenses. The best method to monitor your income and expenses is by keeping a budget. Making a budget doesn’t have to be too complicated. There are multiple budget sheet options already premade in Microsoft Office Excel or in Google Sheets.

Tip 2. Remember your priorities Before college your only expenses may have been clothes and occasionally going out. Now you must worry about tuition, books, bills and so much more. You are going to want to buy everything you had back home from furniture to cooking supplies. However, most college students can’t afford everything at once. Perhaps make a list of what is more important to you and then decide what you can afford AFTER you have paid all your bills.

Tip 3. Try finding affordable activities with your friends Hanging out with friends can easily get expensive. An easy way to save money is to find activities that are affordable or even free. Ideas include hiking, board games, or $5 Tuesdays at local movie theaters. In addition, there are tons of student groups and University sponsored activities throughout the school year.

Tip 4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

THE GREAT OUTDOORS cHALLENGE

Joe Newman / Red Mountain Retreat

If you haven’t noticed by now, Utah is home to some incredible opportunities to explore nature. As a student, it’s perhaps the best time to take advantage of our geographic luck and to fall in love with the great outdoors, and if you don’t plan on sticking around after graduation, there is one challenge you must complete before you leave. I call it the “Great Outdoors Challenge.” You may have heard of “The Mighty Five.” Utah is home to five national parks, more than any other state in the Union. Each of the parks offers unique landscapes and adventures. So here is your challenge: Visit all five national parks before you graduate!

1

Arches National Park Arches is a perfect representation of the delicate balance found in nature. Home to an impressive collection of natural sandstone arches and other landforms, you’ll spend the day hiking trails through a beautiful desert landscape and looking up in sheer wonder. ~4 hours from Salt Lake City via US-6 E www.nps.gov/arch

Canyonlands National Park Canyonlands has its ups and downs, and by that I mean its panoramic plateau top views to its river-side trails at the bottom of wide, lush canyons. Explore by foot or take to the pedals and bike your way through the park.

4

Capitol Reef National Park Capitol Reef is a photographer’s paradise. Of the parks in Utah, Capitol Reef is most known for its incredible landscape views and varied surroundings. Visit to take in the expansive blue skies contrasting against the brilliant red landscape.

Resorts close to Campus

By James Muir-Jones

When it comes to Ski resorts, students at the U are truly spoiled for choice. Within an hour’s drive of campus reside several world-class locations for skiers and snowboarders alike. Park City/Canyons is known as one of North America’s premier resorts, owing largely to its immense 7,000+ skiable acres and extensive terrain parks. If you like variety and you’re serious about your jumps and rails, then look no further. A five minute drive south of PC will bring you to Deer Valley. Looking past the staggering $1,500 season pass for students you’ll discover an experience like no other. Whether it’s personal valets, five star dining on the snow, or meticulously groomed trails, Deer Valley gives you a pretty good idea of “how the other half skis.” Another resort that’s skiers only is Alta, located just up Little Cottonwood Canyon south of the U. Known for its deep powder and impressive terrain, Alta offers a no-frills experience that puts nothing in-between you and the snow. Thanks to a relatively new on-mountain connection gate, you can now ski directly from Alta to one of Utah’s most popular resorts: Snowbird. Favored by many incoming freshmen as the go-to resort for big mountain skiing and snowboarding, Snowbird has something for everyone. With backcountry, bowls, trees and more, it is a fine place to start enjoying some of “the greatest snow on earth.” Lastly, we have Brighton- a true locals resort. Though it might not have the highest acreage or vertical drop, the terrain can surprise you with just how gnarly it will get after a heavy storm. In addition to the laid back culture that characterize many of the skiers and riders that shred there, you’d be hard-pressed to not enjoy Brighton. These are just a few ski resorts that make the University of Utah a dangerously appealing school for ski bums all over the world.

Student Discounts: We’ve all got to admit that skiing ain’t cheap; as far as hobbies are concerned. Luckily for us, there are several ways in which we can save money on the winter activities we love so dearly. First and foremost there are college discounts on season passes offered by all the major Utah resorts which can shave hundreds of dollars off the regular price. These discounts often require you to prove that you are full time student taking at least 12 credit hours, with other restrictions applying depending on where you choose to ski. Additionally, you can purchase discounted day passes through third party sellers that will save you a few bucks when you’re exploring different resorts. A great resource to use when buying day passes is Outdoor Adventures, located in the Student Life Center on campus. In addition to tickets, they offer ski and snowboard rentals at rock-bottom prices, so be sure to check them out!

Student Groups: At a University where well over half the student body takes to the slopes every winter, ski and snowboard clubs are somewhat of a must. Two clubs in particular are among the largest on campus and see hundreds of new students join every year: One Love and Utah Freeskier Society. Both clubs put on events for their members throughout the year, ranging from wax nights to ski movie screenings and much more. They also give their members access to extremely discounted season passes to most major resorts in the area. One Love and Utah Freeskier Society provide skiers and boarders with a community of like-minded powder hounds that share a mutual goal: get out there and shred the gnar. Both groups have tables outside the Union where they do sign ups, sell T-shirts, and blast rad skiing tunes throughout the week starting the first day of classes and going well into November. Feel free to stop by and ask them any questions you might have- they’ll love to help you out!

Feeding U by Dustyn burt

Tucked away behind swinging doors in the basement of the Union, the University of Utah’s Feed U Pantry has come a long way since it's beginnings in the Campus Store. It can easily be considered one of the best resources for students at the U but sadly, only few know about it!

Location: Located in the basement of the Union building,

students can take the stairs or elevator down and it's right next to the computer lab. The Services Desk of the Union is always happy to help you find it!

About: The Feed U Pantry is

a food bank that is run almost entirely by the students of the U. Nick Knight, Director, and fellow students dedicate their time to maintaining the Feed U Pantry. Organizations around campus such as the Union Programming Council work hard to help provide the food that the Pantry uses! The Pantry is open to all U of U students, faculty and staff with a current University of Utah ID. Feed U Pantry hours of operation are found on their website: feedu.utah.edu. If the Feed U Pantry is closed, feel free to drop by the Services Desk of the Union to pick up some food.

IT’S BETTER HERE Hey, congrats! You’re now part of one the top universities in the country. But don’t stress, University Credit Union is here to help. We were once new to the campus too, back in 1956. A lot has changed in the past 60 years. As the University continues to grown, so does the Credit Union. We have four branches and 16 ATMs on campus. For those days you’re not on campus, we have 12 other locations from Riverton to Bountiful. We offer a number of products tailored for students, including Auto Loans, Student Checking Accounts, amazing Mobile and Online Banking. We also have a Student Rewards Visa that offers 5 times the points for purchases made on campus.

Union Student LEader Scholarship by Breanna Mears

For the 2018-2019 academic year I was selected as one of nine students to receive the Union Student Leadership Scholarship. The mission of the Union is to cultivate an environment by providing social, cultural, leadership, and co-curricular activities. Each scholarship recipient was chosen based on their dedication to make a positive impact through the different organizations at the Union and the University of Utah. The scholarship recipients worked in the campus community to make a safe and welcoming atmosphere for the campus community. The scholarships were presented at the annual Union Scholarship Dinner back in April. I had the amazing opportunity to have a scholarship donated by the Atkinson Family. Todd Atkinson, the presenter of my scholarship, had special ties to the Union. His dad owned the construction company that remodeled the Union back in the 1980’s. It was Todd’s first year as a donor and we were matched based on our similar STEM interests. After the scholarship dinner he invited me over to his work, Nelson Labs, to take a tour. A couple weeks later I was able to tour the building with Todd. He was so enthusiastic about each department, specifically Chemistry because that is my major. Since the tour back in May, Todd and I have grabbed lunch twice and plan on meeting up monthly. I never thought that the Union Student Leadership Scholarship would bring me to an amazing connection. The Union has provided a home for me on campus so I would recommend getting involved with leadership roles in different organizations at the Union. Even if on-campus involvement isn’t for you, be a leader with whatever makes you passionate! Anyone can be a leader with the right course of action and dedication to the parts of the world they want to change.
