Volunteer Spotlight: Kei Man Wong

Hi everyone! I am Kei Man, an international student majoring in Health and Kinesiology (EMS) and a pre-med student. I have volunteered at the U Pantry since this summer. I applied to be one of the volunteers because I wanted to do something meaningful during the summer. I also studied during the summer, so it is an excellent opportunity for me to be a part of this friendly family. I remember the first day as a front desk volunteer, I was nervous, even though I watched the training video and completed the quizzes. Being in-person is different from online, therefore, I was worried during the shift. After that, I got used to it and I think that is interesting. Since I am an out-going person, therefore, when I am having the shift at the Pantry, I can talk to the person who works with me or the visitors. Chatting with them is enjoyable. One of the reasons that I enjoy volunteering at the Pantry is because I feel awesome when people come and take lots of products. I know that those goods are going to help them a lot. As I have mentioned, the other reason that I love the pantry is that we have a lovely family here. They are willing to help each other to cover their shift. When I was sick, they were willing to help me and hope I would get well soon. As an international student, it is hard for me to live in a country that uses a different language as my mother tongue, however, I feel being in a loving environment when I start volunteering. Besides volunteering at the Feed U Pantry, I also like doing sports during my spare time, especially playing badminton. I love playing badminton because it is a team sport which requires lots of communication. When I am playing badminton, I can talk with my teammates and improve our skills together. Also, badminton is a sport that needs a quick reaction and decision-making skills. These kinds of skills can help me to become a better person and handle daily life issues. Moreover, when I have free time, I love staying at the library for reading and studying or staying in my room and watching videos. I love reading books that are related to medical and detective stories. Nowadays, I am reading a book that talked about murder cases and how forensics investigators find out the reason of died of the victims. Then, I love listening to music when I am doing some things, such as, studying, relaxing, and reading. Listening to music can help me to calm down and focus. I wish people can know more about the Feed U Pantry after reading this article, and the Pantry also welcomes people who need help and who want to be a part of our family!

Union Scholarship Recipient Spotlight In 2020, the Union awarded over 50 scholarships totaling $220,000 for students here at the Univerisity of Utah. As an out-of-state student whose college experience has been defined by my time at the Union, being awarded the UPC Student Leader Scholarship for my senior year of college has been extremely helpful in finishing my college years. When I first started at the University of Utah, I didn't know anyone other than my Orientation Leader. I came onto this campus as a very blank slate. After a few weeks, I was introduced to the Union Programming Council, and with it, my involvement at the Union began. I learned about the Union Scholarship Fund and all of the good that it provides students here. There's a range of scholarships offered to make them as accessible as possible! I spent years in UPC supporting the Scholarship Fund before finally deciding to apply for a scholarship that I felt connected to. I applied for the UPC Student Leader Scholarship and within my application, I wrote about what the Union had provided for me. A place to grow; my maturity and my wisdom came only with more years in college. A place to relax; whether it was in the bowling alley or the UPC office I always had a home. A place to remember; I will never forget the impact the Union has had on me, and the impact the Union has allowed me to have on other students through my involvement. If you have a similar message to share about the Union, or you feel connected with any of the many scholarship opportunities the Union has, please apply this fall. You won't regret it!

The MUSS is the University of Utah’s student fan club for the athletics teams on campus including football, men’s and women’s basketball, gymnastics, volleyball, soccer, lacrosse, and baseball. The MUSS is a word taken from the school's fight song. The dictionary definition of muss is a state of disorder, confusion or chaos. The MUSS has also been termed the “Mighty Utah Student Section." Anytime a student attends a Utah Athletics event they are a part of the MUSS! Currently, the Football MUSS is the only one with an official registration process. Students can attend every other sporting event for free, with just their student ID. Established in 2002, The MUSS became the most popular student section in the Mountain West Conference and has done the same in the Pac-12. In 2004, it was named one of the Top Five Student Sections in the country by ESPN, and the same honor was given in 2014 by NCAA.com. In 2019, the MUSS was chosen as a finalist for the ESPN Live Mas Student Section Contest, making it one of the top Student Sections in the country. In 2021, The MUSS is celebrating its 20th season! The MUSS gives students opportunities at and around athletics events that they normally wouldn’t receive. Football MUSS members receive a reserved seat for each home football game and are invited to attend an exclusive tailgate before each home football game. The tailgates include free food and prize giveaways. Football MUSS members are also given the opportunity to travel to an away game for a discounted price on The MUSS Bus. Each MUSS member also receives a one-of-a-kind MUSS T-shirt. The MUSS provides an exciting and memorable experience for students at athletics events. Students who join The MUSS develop a bond with other students on campus and also with the athletics teams. We hope that MUSS members will become lifelong University of Utah fans! Students interested in joining the MUSS should follow us on Instagram @_TheMUSS or find more information at ulink.utah.edu/muss

Union Programming Council Spotlight:

Alyssa Henrie

Hi! My name is Alyssa Henrie and I am on the UPC’s Community Service Board as an Associate Director. We get to program fun service events for both the U students and community to enjoy. We recently did a blood drive for ARUP and to raise awareness for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in honor of Blood Cancer Awareness Month! It was super fun and nice to give back to the health community here in Utah. Outside of UPC, I have been heavily involved here on campus and in Salt Lake City. I am a University Ambassador and give tours of campus to prospective students. I also spend my time helping one of my professors as a TA. I also am a part of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), a nonprofit here in SLC that raises funds for blood cancer research. I have loved being involved with LLS because it’s been nice to connect with a community that cares deeply for blood cancer patients and advocates for new and improved medicines during patients’ treatments. It’s been really rewarding, and service is what I’m passionate about, so it’s given me many service opportunities. I am super happy and excited for what’s to come during my time at the U. I love being involved with UPC and have made some of my very best friends from being a part of this program. I plan to graduate in Spring 2023 as of now, and after going on to law school. I’m super excited for the future and what’s the come. If you ever have any questions about Your Campus Life, involvement, or ever want to talk about life, don’t be afraid to reach out!

Graduation Bucket List

During my time at the University of Utah, I have been a University Ambassador, an Orientation Leader and a peer mentor. Basically, I have spent my entire collegiate career talking about this University and all of the interesting and unique things it has to offer its students. However, I find myself entering my fourth and final year as an undergraduate having not taken full advantage of all of those opportunities that I’ve bragged so much to others about. Below is my Graduation Bucket List. It is packed with everything I plan to do, some for the very first time and others for the last, so I can walk away this Spring feeling like I truly did it all at the U.

1. Actually learn the words to the school song 2. Learn about the relationship between the University and the Northern Ute Tribe 3. Paint the rostrum rock 4. Eat at every cafe/restaurant/market on campus at least once 5. Sign the wall at the Pie Underground 6. Visit the Big Five Utah National Parks a. Bonus: Find the Corona Arch just outside of Arches National Park 7. Go to my last football game as a member of the MUSS a. Bonus: Attend a different PAC 12 sporting event as well 8. Visit the Natural History Museum of Utah, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and the Red Butte Gardens all for free 9. Hike to the Block U on the mountain 10. Take graduation pictures in front of the Block U on campus

Before I started at the University of Utah, I had no idea that I would ever join a sorority. I had heard very little about the process and the experience and regarded it timidly. I wasn’t sure if I was the sorority “type of girl”. It was really only on a whim that I signed up the night before registration closed because I figured there was no harm in trying it out. I had come to college with the intention to get out of my comfort zone, after all. Now, I look back on that late-night, last-minute decision, and I see how it has grown into the most important parts of my life. It has given me my study buddies. Girls to suffer with on the third floor of the library as we cram for the next big midterm. It’s given me unconditional love and support, for I know that there are 150 girls cheering me on through all my wins and picking me back up after failures. It’s given me memories to last a lifetime - sleepover nights during recruitment and stomping away in my cowgirl boots at formal. Most of all, it has given me my best friends, the people I am so grateful to have in my life. I am so thankful to my 18-year-old self who decided to take a leap into the unknown. I know now that being a sorority girl isn’t exclusive to a certain type of person. It’s an experience for those who are looking for somewhere to belong. I am proud to be a part of the Panhellenic community of strong, intelligent, and capable women.

Try some SLC Favorites!

Let’s be honest—when it comes to food, you shouldn’t mess around. Eating is more than just satisfying hunger but having an experience with the people you go with! So stop going to the same old restaurants you always go to and try something new! In no particular order...

Ruth’s Diner: 4160 Emigration Canyon Rd, Salt Lake City, UT 84108

Classic. Ruth’s Diner has been around since the 1930s serving food 8am-10pm 7 days a week! Go back in time to this one-of-a-kind diner but make sure you go early; this hidden gem in Emigration Canyon fills up quickly! Make sure to try one of Ruth’s favorites!

Lucky 13: 135 W 1300 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84115

This is like a “we’ve been hanging out long enough you can see me eat ugly” type of place. The burgers are mammoth with a thirst-clenching flavor, the buns homemade, and the meat juicy and fresh—their burgers don’t mess around! Sorry not sorry to the youngsters—it’s a 21 and older place! There’s nothing more satisfying than a juicy burger (above) with a cold beer.

The Pie Pizzeria: 1320 E 200 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84102

Wanna pizza me? Giant pizza served with a heart attack, this greasy pizza is a campus favorite and a classic University of Utah experience! The Pie Pizzeria is not only a filling experience but is where the term Freshmen 15 came from, if you catch my drift.

Stone Ground: 249 E 400 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84111

For a more upscale dining experience, Stone Ground has awesome Italian food. The secret is to go on Sundays for their “all you can eat” pasta and pizza.

Sawadee Thai Restaurant: 754 S Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84102

Thai food anyone? If you haven’t had Thai food before this is the place to go! The food has an incredible flavor for both spice lovers and haters. Haters gonna hate but you won’t be hatin’ Sawadee once you go! The portions are huge so there are always leftovers and who doesn’t love leftovers, especially when the leftovers still taste delicious!

Bombay House: 2731 Parleys Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84109

Are you game for spicy food? Spice up your digestive system with some Indian food! Go to an authentic Indian restaurant with five-star food and service! Bombay is hidden by the Walmart on Foothill Dr. (yes, a 24-hour Walmart hidden on Foothill Dr.)

Ichiban Sushi: 336 400 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84111

Want sushi that makes you feel like you are on the coast? Ichiban is the place for you! They have multiple locations but this one is definitely the best!

Wing Coop: 3971 Wasatch Blvd, Salt Lake City, UT 84124

Ain’t no thang like a chicken wing! Take a friend, a special someone or someone you know will pay and grab yourself some awesome wings with “out of this world”, I can’t even, flavor.

Dolcetti Gelato: 902 E 900 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84105

Don’t stop at dinner! It’s time for dessert! Hang out at 9th and 9th and grab some gelato! They have many unique flavors; my personal favorite is their white wine gelato! Yum!

Ruby Snap Cookies: 770 300 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84101

WTF (What the frosting)?! Frosting on a cookie? Why didn’t I think of that! Oh snap! It’s a tiny shop on 3rd West. Don’t worry you can also get their cookie dough at Harmon’s grocery stores, It doesn’t include their icing and what’s a cookie without icing? Make sure to checkout their store and get a sample before deciding what cookies you want to get! I’m a sucker for their Mia cookie.

Crimson View: 200 S Central Campus Dr. (aka the Union!)

If you’re smart, you would have recognized that this address is on campus. Yes, a sit down lunch restaurant on our campus (also available for catered events in the evening)! On the top floor of the Union building, have yourself a little getaway from school and eat! As an additional plus, meal plan flex dollars are accepted here. Sometimes the best things are right where U are!

StART Thinking Differently By AnnA oldroyd Artists never quit — not even during pandemics. We are bound together and stronger than ever. Be part of the U’s sustainability efforts Welcome to the University of Utah. We invite you to grow—literally and figuratively—with the Uʼs Sustainability Office! The University of Utah is a leader in sustainability, earning a Gold rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. At the U, we define sustainability as the integrated pursuit of social equity, environmental integrity, and economic security for current and future generations. Get involved with sustainability education, or participate in one of our many extracurricular opportunities. Here are a few places to get started:

Take sustainability-related classes

It is our mission to provide students with the tools they need to contribute to a more just and sustainable society. Students can search for sustainability-related classes in the Course Catalog using the attributes SUSC or SUSL. Plus, there is a new Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Sustainability Certificate. The certificate allows students to complete their general education requirements through classes that build skills in the equity-related, ecological, and economic dimensions of sustainability. Learn more at sustainability.utah.edu/undergraduate-certificate.

Engage in sustainable food systems

Yes, we do grow food on campus! The Sustainability Office organizes many food-related activities. The Edible Campus Gardens provide students a chance to get their hands in the dirt and learn how to cultivate a variety of foods. All produce grown at the gardens is donated to the Feed U Pantry. Additionally, the food initiatives team is establishing seed libraries to help the university community grow at home. Learn more at sustainability.utah.edu/food.

Choose your own sustainability adventure

Students are the source for some of the most powerful sustainability initiatives at the university. Your vision for our university matters. See your ideas come to fruition with the Sustainable Campus Initiative Fund (SCIF). SCIF provides grants to the U community for projects that enhance the sustainability of our campus and community. Create projects that improve our campus and build your resumé. Past project funding ranges from around $100 to more than $80,000. See how you can make a difference at sustainability.utah.edu/SCIF. Learn more about the Sustainability Office at sustainability.utah.edu or follow us on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook (@SustainableUofU). Hiking and Climbing in SLC: No better place around! By: Michael Sullivan Living in Utah provides numerous opportunities to get outside and see the valley from many different angles. One of the best ways to do this is hiking the various mountains and canyons that are within 25 minutes from campus, which makes the possibilities endless. Hiking is one of the best ways to spend your time outside. It provides an easy way to work on your cardiovascular endurance and it allows you to feel the sunshine on your skin. Here are my top three favorite hikes to enjoy: 1. Ensign Peak Trail - 0.8 mi - ~10 - 15 min drive from the Union -Ensign Peak is a wonderful, and simple hike to get started with. The trailhead is located behind the state capitol, near the top of state street. The hike isn’t too steep and it's a short distance from start to finish. Once you arrive at the top, you are rewarded with an amazing view of the entire Salt Lake Valley as well as areas to the North and Northwest of the valley. On days where a storm is rolling in, or maybe an excess amount of clouds, the views up there are breathtaking and truly allow for great appreciation of where we live. 2. Living Room Trail - 2.3 mi - ~5 min drive from Union /15 minute walk from PHC -The Living Room trail is a wonderful hike for everyone new to the University of Utah, or even those who have lived in SLC for their entire life. Located just a few miles south of the main U of U campus above research park, The Living Room Trail is a simple climb up to the foothills behind campus that provides a makeshift “living room” out of rocks on the mountainside. This allows hikers to rest and enjoy the views of the valley after their steep climb up to the finish. Whether by car, or by foot, the Living Room is accessible for all and should be one of the first hikes students and alumni alike venture up as soon as possible. 3. Neffs Canyon Trail - 7 mi - ~20 min drive from the Union -Located just to the North-East of Mount Olympus, Neffs Canyon is great because it provides so many different approaches for any level of hiker. Upon arrival, there are two possible trails to take up the canyon: one being the designated gravel path, and the other is a path taken through the trees and a riverbed. Eventually both paths meet at a fork in the road where to the left follows the official trail which can continue for miles all the way into Thaynes Canyon up in Park City. The other option to the right leads you up the river bed up into the left crevice of Mount Olympus if looking at it from the University. Neffs canyon is almost constantly covered by lush, green trees so sunlight is never a problem. It’s a great choice if you want to get away from crowds, while also getting a wonderful view of the valley from the Mount Olympus side.

resorts are just a highlight of why Salt Lake City was chosen for the 2002 Winter Olympics. Anyone looking to drive a little longer to explore can drive to Powder Mountain, North America’s largest ski resort, which is an hour and a half from campus. Powder Mountain is a hidden gem of skiing and snowboarding in my opinion. Powder Mountain has over 80,000 acres of skiable terrain, endless pow, and very few crowds. If you want to rent gear or try skiing or snowboarding (or both!) the U has plenty of In my first year of college I would options to help you fulfill your always ask students, “Why did you longing for new experiences. decide on the U?” and almost Campus recreation services every time a student would provide discounted ski tickets answer with “the location”. Taking Advantage of all Salt Lake By Katherine Ferguson City Has to Offer! My favorite thing about Salt Lake City is the close proximity to nature. The University of Utah sits in the perfect location, with mountains backing the campus, and downtown SLC three minutes away! There is plenty to do off campus for all students who love to get out and be active!

Trails Close To Campus

999 Ride

Don’t have a car? No problem! There are many hiking, biking and walking trails just above campus that are walking distance from Research Park. Students who are looking to spend a few hours up in the Wasatch mountains should look at hiking trails such as The Living Room. The trail is 4 miles roundtrip and of moderate difficulty. Fantastic views of the valley can be seen throughout the hike, and dogs are welcome to come with! At the top of the trail there are rocks arranged to function as benches, chairs, and couches. Hence the name, ‘Living Room’. It is the perfect sunset hike for summer and fall! Another great hike, right next to the Living Room trail is Mount Wire. This trail is 4.7 miles, and also of moderate difficulty. Mount Wire will take a bit longer, so plan to bring water and maybe a snack too. At the top of this trail there is an old airway beacon that you can climb! This hike has more beautiful views of Salt Lake City, and colorful wildflowers during the summer months. Just below those two hikes is the Bonneville Shoreline trail. This is a perfect walk for students who need a break in between classes, or would just like to quickly de-stress out in nature. The trail is very wide, and pretty flat so it is perfect for a light walk or a good run. The best thing about all these trails is how close they are to campus! So, don’t forget to check them out this fall!

Clear your Thursday nights, because you will not want to miss this! The 999 Ride is an “all-inclusive, all-welcoming social ride that happens every Thursday: all year long, weather be damned”. The ride usually starts at 9pm, or a little after and meets at 9th and 9th (900S 900E). Bring your bike, bring some friends, or go alone and meet lots of fun people. Enjoy a slow, casual ride through the city, with music, yelling, and intermittent dance parties at the stops throughout the night. The 999 Ride is frequently attended by Utah students, so it is the perfect place to meet new friends, all while getting some exercise and exploring more of Salt Lake City! I love the 999 Ride, it is something that I look forward to each week. I hope to see some of you there!

Quick Tips & Tricks From a Scholarship Recipient Let’s talk about By Gracie Tidwell money. College expenses can certainly pile up, and most students end up worrying about paying for college at some point or another. But don’t let the stress of paying for school hold you back from enjoying your college experience. Scholarships, grants, and other financial aid are abundant and often underutilized. Here are some tips on taking full advantage of all the scholarship opportunities available to you:

94

Apply for everything

Even if you don’t think you have a good chance at receiving a certain scholarship, apply anyway. You often have a much better chance at getting said scholarship than you may think, especially if there aren’t very many applicants. Best case scenario, you end up getting unexpected money.

Check out the Union

The Union has many scholarships, and is a great place to get started on your search for scholarships. There are opportunities for students of all majors, and oftentimes there are scholarships geared towards specific groups of individuals.

Don’t stop after your freshman year!

Oftentimes, students think that the scholarships they receive their freshman year are all they are eligible for. However, you can continue applying for scholarships throughout your entire college experience to help you mitigate some of your expenses.

Stay organized!

Once you’ve found some scholarships you want to apply for, keep track of specific requirements and due dates. You don’t want to lose out on scholarship money because you missed a deadline! Also make sure you note any post-acceptance tasks you must complete once you’ve received a scholarship, such as sending thank you letters or videos.
