DREAMING AT THE U by luisa sujey rodriguez
The Dream Center in the Office Undergraduate Studies and the Office for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion works holistically with undocumented students (with and without DACA) and mixed-status families from college access to graduation. The center provides many services, including financial assistance, academic support, connection to resources on and off-campus, family services, and campus community training. The lives of many students we serve have been affected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA is an Executive Order announced by President Barack Obama on June 15, 2012. Students who qualify for this program are eligible for a Temporary Employment Authorization Document, a Social Security Card (valid for work only), and Relief from Deportation. With this, undocumented students have the option to work and pay for their college tuition. However, the Trump administration rescinded the program on September 5, 2017. During that time, USCIS no longer accepted new applications, and incoming students who would have otherwise qualified for the program were left with limited financial resources to pay for their education. In July of 2020, the Supreme Court of The United States ruled against the executive order to rescind the DACA program and reinstated it. USCIS will continue to reject initial applications but is now accepting renewal applications with some new contingencies for current DACA beneficiaries. For those affected by these added aspects, or those that require clarifying information, the Dream Center is here to support by providing individualized advising and scholarship assistance. For the general student population, we also engage in specialized college outreach, access strategies, and promote campus-wide advocacy and training for University of Utah students, faculty, staff, and administration, as well as increase community-wide awareness of policies affecting current and future undocumented students at the University of Utah. Just Showing Up: to Vote By: Michelle Valdes I’m guessing your Instagram feed looked a bit different this summer, I bet you saw more breaking news on Twitter, and I would make an educated guess that you’ve taken a harder look at politics amidst all that’s been going in our country lately. You might have formed strong opinions about how the world is, or better yet, how it should be. And, if you’re anything like me-- you might have directed your attention towards what you could do to make the world reflect the better place you desperately want it to be. As it turns out, one of the most impactful things you can do, is one of the smallest tasks: just showing up to vote. 2020 is a presidential election year, though unprecedented with the threat of COVID-19, voting for the next president of the United States will still occur later this fall. However, the majority of people around our age won’t vote. In 2016 (the last presidential election), only 39% of people aged 18-24 reported voting. Let’s use the University of Utah campus to put that into perspective-- fall semester of 2019, there were a reported 32,818 students attending our University. Let’s imagine then, that only 39% of our campus voted. That would mean that over 20,000 students would not have participated in the last election for the president of the United States. That would mean more than likely-- your friends, your classmates, and even you might not have participated. Class in Session And it matters. Voting matters. The people who we elect, steer the direction of our city, our counties, our state, and our country. They are elected by all of us, showing up, and making our voices heard for the direction that we want to go in the future. Imagine showing up to a class discussion where attendance isn’t mandatory. When only around 39% of the class shows up, the conversation that occurs doesn’t represent the totality of the perspectives in the class. Even worse, when there are barriers in place for some of the students to get to class, there are conversations that don’t take place altogether because they are not there to share their perspectives, their struggles, and what they need to “pass” the class. If the classroom is full of people over the age of 24 talking over us-- our perspectives, our struggles, and what we need, won’t be a conversation. Easier for U Voting for young people can be difficult when there is general confusion regarding how to vote, when to vote, or how voting works altogether. Luckily for us, there are great resources on campus that make showing up easier. First off, there has been a big push in recent years to get young people registered to vote. You might recall people in lime-green vests around campus with clipboards urging you to register to vote, or maybe you know that you can register anytime online at: vote.dosomething.org or vote.utah.gov. There are also physical polling stations located on campus, and departments and organizations on campus dedicated to getting students to participate in voting. The Associated Students of the University of Utah (ASUU/student government), has an entire board dedicated to making civic engagement easier for students (asuu.utah.edu or skay@asuu.utah.edu). As well as, the Hinckley Institute of Politics which hosts events and talks about getting to the voting booth (hinckley.utah.edu). If you want to get educated on the candidates you can use justfacts.votesmart.org for a non-partisan look at candidates. Utah also uses mail-in ballots that make your vote that much easier, just fill it out at home, then drop off your completed ballot at a polling location or send them through the mail free of charge and long lines! Tell your friends, your classmates, and your peers to just show up. It helps create that better version of the world we all crave when we show up for each other and vote.

CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT BY RYAN RHODES AND SABAH SIAL At the U, there are endless possibilities of things to explore, discover, and create. Going to class is only half the story of campus life. Getting involved in campus activities is the best way to make friends, learn a new hobby or skill, and prepare yourself with skills necessary for your future. With more than five hundred student organizations and numerous leadership programs, students have so many opportunities to find a sense of campus community, make a difference, and tailor their university experience. These organizations span a wide array of interests and hobbies like Robotics, Chess Club, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Club Sports, Student Government, and so much more. Each organization offers a unique set of goals and benefits. Pre-professional organizations, like pre-med and pre-law, meet with working professionals in their respective fields, while recreational or club sport organizations—like soccer and skiing clubs—provide physical activity, enjoyment of a sport, and meeting new people. My own involvement journey began with the Freshman Ambassador Board (FAB) with the Union Programming Council (UPC) in my first year. Additionally, I served an internship with the connections and partnerships from the Hinckley Institute. Getting involved on campus opened many doors to me and led to even more involvement. Eventually, I became an Involvement Ambassador to help other students find community at the U, and I was appointed to the ASUU Supreme Court. My involvement experiences weren’t always explicitly related to my Finance major, or intended law study, but they were invaluable in providing me with the toolkit of skills and experience necessary for applying to internships and jobs. Getting involved on campus has helped me take the concepts from my classes and apply them to the real world. I know the year ahead seems uncertain or different since many classes and events have moved to an online format, but there are still many opportunities to help you get involved. In fact, there are even greater opportunities now for involvement than before! By: Emma Leishman On the Student Alumni Board, one of our main focuses is on the traditions here at the University of Utah. We actively work to make our school’s traditions meaningful, long-lasting experiences for both students and alumni. We see it as an opportunity to cultivate school spirit and a lifelong love and loyalty for the U. Growing up in a family full of Utah alumni (going back five generations!) I looked forward to the day when I could finally participate in these traditions myself ! From the homecoming 5k to the third down jump in the MUSS, these moments are what make being a student here so special. It’s hard to pick, but my favorite tradition here at the U is our Founder’s Day celebration. Every year, the Alumni Association recognizes distinguished and honorary alumni to celebrate the founding of the University of Utah in 1850. The recipients of these awards have excelled professionally and gone above and beyond to serve those in their community. Nothing makes me prouder, or inspires me more, than to see the incredible things students from this university go on to do. This past Founder’s Day, we started a new tradition and hosted a luncheon where we invited one of the recipients, Jeff Battcher, to speak to current students. Some background on Jeff: He attended the U on a football scholarship and lettered in football and baseball, before going on to work as the vice president of Delta Air Lines, BellSouth, and Level 3 Communications. He cofounded and is the current president of AIM Sports Reputation Management, and currently sits on the board of directors for several outstanding community service-oriented organizations. He has an incredible story of perseverance and integrity, and hearing from him about how he got to where he is today was such an inspiring experience! He offered wisdom and advice and shared that he truly felt like his time at the U prepared him to go on to the big things he did in life. It helped me decide what I wanted to study and what I want to do with the rest of my life, and getting to make that connection through this tradition was so amazing. Between the luncheon and the awards banquet where the rest of the recipients were honored, my love and pride for this university grew more than I knew was possible. Alumni from this school go on to do remarkable and exceptional things, and this tradition gave me an opportunity to see just how possible it is. These traditions (and many more) have taught me that being a student at the University of Utah means so much more than just going to class. This university creates educated leaders, creative innovators, and compassionate members of the community and I firmly believe that our traditions play a huge role in this. Through educating students on the history of our school to building a sense of pride within our community, these traditions are what makes being a University of Utah student so special!
Getting Involved with University Union
Hi my name is David Leon, I’m a Junior at the University of Utah and I’m studying Recreational Therapy. My involvement on campus started with the Union, as a Freshman Ambassador, which led me to want to get more involved. So, I joined Leap Scholars, became a Mentor for Beacon Scholars, and an intern for the Dream Center. For the past 3 years, my dream of attending college became a reality and it is all due to one association: The Union Scholarship Fund. Not only has the Union helped me financially, but they have become a place that I look at as a second home. Fulfilling their mission statement; “to cultivate an environment that serves students by providing social, cultural, leadership and co-curricular opportunities. The Union values diversity and promotes a safe and welcoming atmosphere where students are inspired to realize their potential.” Here in the Union, I have had the opportunity to grow into the leader that I am today. With my involvement on campus, I have been able to help many First-Generation students feel welcomed at the U. I also help many low-income students attend the University of Utah who may have previously thought would be an impossible task, due to either their financial situation or citizenship status. The answer comes from the support of the Union Scholarship Fund. They have awarded over $470,00 over the past 10 years allowing over 95 student leaders to continue their education.

Try something new for the foodie in u Written by Brooke Newhall
Gourmet Burger at Lucky 13 Pub
Try some SLC Favorites!
Let’s be honest—when it comes to food, you shouldn’t mess around. Eating is more than just satisfying hunger but having an experience with the people you go with! So stop going to the same old restaurants you always go to and try something new! In no particular order...
Ruth’s Diner: 4160 Emigration Canyon Rd, Salt Lake City, UT 84108
Classic. Ruth’s Diner has been around since the 1930s serving food 8am-10pm 7 days a week! Go back in time to this one-of-a-kind diner but make sure you go early; this hidden gem in Emigration Canyon fills up quickly! Make sure to try one of Ruth’s favorites!
Lucky 13: 135 W 1300 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84115
This is like a “we’ve been hanging out long enough you can see me eat ugly” type of place. The burgers are mammoth with a thirst-clenching flavor, the buns homemade, and the meat juicy and fresh—their burgers don’t mess around! Sorry not sorry to the youngsters—it’s a 21 and older place! There’s nothing more satisfying than a juicy burger (above) with a cold beer.
The Pie Pizzeria: 1320 E 200 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84102
Wanna pizza me? Giant pizza served with a heart attack, this greasy pizza is a campus favorite and a classic University of Utah experience! The Pie Pizzeria is not only a filling experience but is where the term Freshmen 15 came from, if you catch my drift.
Stone Ground: 249 E 400 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84111
For a more upscale dining experience, Stone Ground has awesome Italian food. The secret is to go on Sundays for their “all you can eat” pasta and pizza.
Sawadee Thai Restaurant: 754 S Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84102
Thai food anyone? If you haven’t had Thai food before this is the place to go! The food has an incredible flavor for both spice lovers and haters. Haters gonna hate but you won’t be hatin’ Sawadee once you go! The portions are huge so there are always leftovers and who doesn’t love leftovers, especially when the leftovers still taste delicious!
Bombay House: 2731 Parleys Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84109
Are you game for spicy food? Spice up your digestive system with some Indian food! Go to an authentic Indian restaurant with five-star food and service! Bombay is hidden by the Walmart on Foothill Dr. (yes, a 24-hour Walmart hidden on Foothill Dr.)

Ichiban Sushi: 336 400 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84111
Want sushi that makes you feel like you are on the coast? Ichiban is the place for you! They have multiple locations but this one is definitely the best!
Wing Coop: 3971 Wasatch Blvd, Salt Lake City, UT 84124
Ain’t no thang like a chicken wing! Dinner for two? The Wednesday Special is 20 Wings, Two Drinks and Fries for $20! Take a friend, a special someone or someone you know will pay and grab yourself some awesome wings with “out of this world”, I can’t even, flavor.
Dolcetti Gelato: 902 E 900 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84105
Don’t stop at dinner! It’s time for dessert! Hang out at 9th and 9th and grab some gelato! They have many unique flavors; my personal favorite is their white wine gelato! Yum!
Ruby Snap Cookies: 770 300 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84101
WTF (What the frosting)?! Frosting on a cookie? Why didn’t I think of that! Oh snap! It’s a tiny shop on 3rd West. Don’t worry you can also get their cookie dough at Harmon’s grocery stores, It doesn’t include their icing and what’s a cookie without icing? Make sure to checkout their store and get a sample before deciding what cookies you want to get! I’m a sucker for their Mia cookie.
Crimson View: 200 S Central Campus Dr. (aka the Union!)
If you’re smart, you would have recognized that this address is on campus. Yes, a sit down lunch restaurant on our campus (also available for catered events in the evening)! On the top floor of the Union building, have yourself a little getaway from school and eat! As an additional plus, meal plan flex dollars are accepted here. Sometimes the best things are right where U are!

COOKING
ON A BUDGET As students, we know how important it is to save money. This becomes pretty hard to do when you’re spending $10 everyday for on-campus food. What if I told you that you could spend the same $10 or less at the grocery store to serve at least two meals instead of just one? We’re not talking about Cup Noodle or Kraft Mac and Cheese either. You can make actual food with little to no cost by using these resources right here on campus. The Feed U Pantry is a free resource to students, staff and faculty in the campus community to make affordable meals. We recognize that it is difficult to balance finances, job, and school and we hope to provide healthy and free food options to help alleviate the burden. Within the pantry, there is an assortment of canned goods, dry grains and fresh produce available to clients. Weekly food recipes that include common pantry ingredients are shared weekly on our Instagram and found on our front desk. In addition, we will provide monthly virtual food demonstrations by Executive Chef Peter from Chartwells as he walks through the steps of cooking a delicious meal with simple and cheap ingredients. Please follow us on our Instagram @feedupantry for upcoming pantry recipes and events announcements! - Emily Huang

StART Thinking Differently By AnnA oldroyd Artists never quit — not even during pandemics. We are bound together and stronger than ever. So, to find out how you can experience the visual and performing arts for free or deeply-discounted prices this year, visit artspass.utah.edu. Funded and fueled by U student’s Fine Arts Fees, the Arts Pass program makes these opportunities accessible to all University of Utah students including: screenings, performances, concerts, and exhibitions by our students and faculty. It also provides free or discounted access to the professional arts organizations on campus: UtahPresents, Pioneer Theatre Company, and the Utah Museum of Fine Art.
Why do we do this? Because more and more research is showing the positive impacts of engaging in the arts. The findings are significant: exposure to the arts is linked with better critical thinking skills, greater social tolerance, a greater likelihood of seeking out art and culture in the future, and better workforce opportunities. So, check out what events are coming up and start thinking differently.
