Union Station Kansas City

HIGHLIGHTS AND CAMPUS OVERVIEW

the Visual Voice of Kansas City

A Year of Change. A Year that Changed Us. . . As 2021 came to a close, all of us at your Union Station were

taking a deep breath and feeling both blessed and humbled by what happened at Kansas City’s historic home over the past year. Perhaps you were feeling the same. Needless to say, the pace of change in all our lives maintained the same head-spinning speed in 2021 as was established in 2020. In and out of new and evolving health and safety mandates. Exciting new additions to our Science City. Incredibly consequential community investments in Union Station that are allowing us to accelerate needed preservation, restoration and renovation. Some parts of our business came roaring back to life while others continued taking a slow path back to pre-pandemic levels. And so much more. A year of change, indeed. Then, in June, we welcomed an international delegation from Spain and Poland to help officially open Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away. And from that moment on, we witnessed an astonishing and emotional response from our community and every corner of the country. Together, we learned the true message of Auschwitz . . . Never Again. And WE were changed . . . for the better and forever. To be honest, we weren’t sure how the tough topic of Auschwitz would be embraced in the midst of so much change in the world around us. The messages of the Holocaust are timeless. That’s true. But timing is always critical to the success of any exhibition. It turns out, however, the moment was perfect. The messages of equity, diversity and inclusion resonated in a stunning way and there seems to be no end to it in sight, evidenced by the huge outpouring of appreciation and engagement on November 12th when we shared news about an unprecedented extension to the tour in Kansas City through March 20, 2022. As of this writing, over 330,000 people have either visited or secured tickets to visit the Auschwitz exhibition. Over 26,000 of those are school-aged kids coming in field trips. Guests from all 50 States and multiple countries have made your Union Station their "must see" destination. These are record-breaking numbers and all the evidence one needs that this year of change has most certainly changed hundreds of thousands of lives in everlasting ways.

With core missions of science education, celebration of community and preservation of history, Union Station is home to a multitude of award-winning attractions, destinations, and organizations. Science City – recognized internationally – is a leader in STEM education for children from birth thru high school. The Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium is fitted with cutting-edge technology, live data feeds from NASA, and can visualize real-time astronomical occurrences for both in-person and online audiences. And the massive Bank of America Gallery regularly hosts the most prestigious international touring exhibitions. Union Station is also home to a variety of unique shops, restaurants, theaters, meeting spaces and community events ranging from small and intimate to gatherings of over 150,000 people. Rescued from the ruble after decades of decline, Union Station is credited as a wake-up call for preservationists, historians, and civic leaders worldwide as to what is possible when public/private partnerships, an enthusiastic citizenry, and visionary leadership combine to preserve our past and build for the future. In fact, the Union Station story is now a case study in enlightened strategic planning for museums, cultural centers, and community gatherings places around the globe. Strong. Financially Secure. Self-Sustaining. Disciplined. And driven to succeed. All of these describe Union Station Kansas City. And perhaps most importantly, our guests and diverse, far-reaching communities describes us as “the visual voice”, “the historic home”, and “the place where we ALL gather to listen, learn and celebrate life’s most important moments”. High praise, indeed.

Union Station Kansas City Connect • Create • Discover • Celebrate

From stockyards and railways, fountains and jazz, world-class barbecue and modern commerce, Union Station has served as the front doorstep to Kansas City through it all. Originally constructed in 1914 as a massive railroad terminal, Union Station quickly became a centering point for commerce, culture and community. Today, over 100 years later, Union Station Kansas City – a 501(c)3 non-profit organization – has reclaimed those monikers and added more. Today, this historic self-sustaining landmark located in the heart of downtown Kansas City is where our citizens connect, create, discover and celebrate. We incubate young businesses. We teach young students. We deliver world-class exhibitions. And, of course, we celebrate and inspire an entire Greater Kansas City community. In 2017 and 2018 alone, the community and region generously recognized the Station and Science City with awards for “Best of KC,” “Attraction of the Year,” “Favorite Family-Friendly Attraction” and “Favorite Historic Attraction.” Now, with a burgeoning downtown and crossroads arts district, this “Paris of the Plains” future has never looked so bright.

All roads lead to Kansas City. The center of the nation. The heart of America. In two states. Connected by location and a sense of purpose. A place that feels like mainstreet, USA but has become a major destination. A place with Midwestern hospitality but still on the leading edge.

• America’s most centrally located major metropolitan area • 400 daily flights with non-stop service to 56 destinations • 55 million people within a day’s drive

And people across the country couldn’t agree more... “Revel in the revival” Best Trips 2019 – National Geographic “Worth a closer look …” – Vogue “Kansas City doesn’t disappoint.” – Forbes “More museums than you would expect” – USA Today “Kansas City is so hot right now.” – Conde Nast Traveler “A happy state of mind” – The New York Times “11 Cities on the Rise” – Smart Meetings “More than barbecue and jazz … but those parts are stellar” – New York Magazine “America’s newest boozy boomtown” – Food & Wine “Book your tickets” – Food & Wine “Miraculous …. A phenomenon” – The New York Times “A historic hub” – CNN “An unexpected travel surprise” – National Geographic

Union Station, an architectural masterpiece. Living history. A place for great adventure. Where Kansas City connects, creates, discovers and celebrates.
