As a record-setting 2017 holiday season wound down and a

fast-paced 2018 got underway, your Union Station and Science City were honored with these prestigious local and regional recognitions. This was really big news! So we paused — but not for too long — to celebrate the collective spirit, support and effort it took to deliver another stunning year of success. Indeed, it was and is very special and humbling to be acknowledged among Kansas City’s many worldclass attractions and important destinations. Now, within these pages of our ON TRACK Impact Report Edition, it’s time to celebrate you . . . the most important element of our remarkable success. How will we do that? By highlighting what’s been accomplished, what’s currently happening and what’s around the corner. You’ve been and remain a key part of it all. Your vote of confidence every time you visit is essential and extremely appreciated. You’ll see, our vision is BIG! Our resolve is strong. And our energy and focus to keep Union Station a vibrant and vital resource for you and all of Kansas City is endless. Simply put, we’re poised for even more success and that’s a terrific place to be. A few key projects and priorities to watch include:

• Our new Early Learning expansion into Science City — announced in October of 2017 with a generous initial grant from The Hall Family Foundation of $4 million. Set to open in mid-2019, this current year will be filled with detailed planning, program development, initial construction and a big push to invite 4

and involve the entire community in funding the remaining $3 million needed to bring this ambitious and high-impact priority to life.

• Our critical Exterior Preservation Project — begun in 2017

and scheduled to wrap up mid-year 2018. This proactive TLC of our historic building will touch nearly every exterior surface with needed repair, cleaning and protective applications. You may have seen scaffolding erected and moving around the Station. Now that warmer daytime temperatures have arrived, the pace of work will once again quicken as will our fundraising to close the final gap in this important $1.6 million investment.

• An upcoming Summer of non-stop fun and hands-on

opportunities for the entire family to explore Union Station, Science City, the Planetarium and our entire exciting campus. We have festivals, concerts, special events and epic exhibitions planned. From Corporate Attorney to World Renowned LEGO® Artist The Artist Behind the Art of the Brick, Turns Toys Into Art N

athan Sawaya was a corporate lawyer in New York City. Like so many hobbyists, he built LEGO® creations as a way to unwind at the end of the day. “Eventually my apartment was packed wall-to-wall with art,” Sawaya says. “I put together a collection of sculptures on a website as a virtual gallery ... the day my website crashed from too many hits, I decided to make a change.” Just like that, Sawaya left practicing law and started his journey to become the world’s first artist to exclusively use LEGO® bricks as his medium. His decision may have seemed insensible to some—leaving a successful career for a popular toy—but the overwhelming response has proved that his work is anything but child’s play. “It was scary, but also completely liberating,” explains Sawaya.

“I was in control of my own destiny, and the first morning I woke up after leaving the law firm was the beginning of what has turned out to be a truly thrilling adventure.” A thrilling adventure, indeed! Two full-time working studios and millions of LEGO® bricks later, Sawaya has created hundreds of remarkable creations that inspire the child in all of us. His exhibition— THE ART OF THE BRICK—is the world’s largest and most elaborate exhibition of artwork made of LEGO® bricks ever. Featuring 110 whimsical and awe-inspiring works of art, the exhibit has been seen by 6 million people in 84 cities across 6 continents. And now, not only has it come to Kansas City, but Nathan Sawaya himself made a rare artist appearance to unveil the creation he’s made just for Kansas City. What Sawaya accomplishes with simple blocks of plastic is nothing short of amazing. The exhibition hopes to demonstrate the potential of imagination and the power of creativity—inspiring visitors of all ages to create their own artwork by thinking outside the box. “I have found that families who may have never been to an art gallery are drawn to THE ART OF THE BRICK exhibition because of that familiarity and affinity with the toy,” says Sawaya. “And, so in a sense, by using a medium that people may have at home, it is about the democratizing of the art world.” ■

E xhibition O pening & R eception Nearly 300 special guests, donors, sponsors, Union Station loyalists and art enthusiasts were welcomed to a private evening of innovation and creativity for The Art of the Brick Exhibition (presented by Chase) opening on January 25, 2018. All were greeted with an entrance gallery filled with childhood treasures provided by the National Toy and Miniature Museum, followed by an atmosphere of brightly colored designs, LEGO®-inspired hors d’oeuvres, beverages and a spectacular candy bar. Guest speakers, including the contemporary genius behind it all — artist Nathan Sawaya — shared thoughts about the remarkable displays made from one of the most recognizable toys in the world. Many were thanked for their tireless efforts to create such a special event and show stopping exhibit where science meets art in a rare and unique way. The ‘bricked’ ribbon was then cut, kicking off the official opening to a world of ingenuity. Thank you to all in attendance! Special appreciation to Tom and Mary Bloch for their generous contribution of their wonderful namesake wine. As well, deep appreciation to Brancato’s Catering for their creativity and generosity in presenting a beautiful selection of themed hors d’oeuvres and desserts. ■

A Responsibility of Monumental Proportions Exterior Preservation Project Receives Big Funding Boost But Still Needs Community Participation Maintaining

a historic home measuring more than 850,000 sqf and once boasting 900 original rooms is an enormous task, but certainly a labor of love in our case. In fact, it’s a privilege that brings genuine satisfaction along with tremendous responsibility. As we shared in June of last year, that responsibility and privilege took on monumental proportions as we began a massive and proactive exterior preservation project that will eventually touch nearly every historic surface of Union Station’s exterior. 1,200 tubes of caulk. More than 1,000 bags of mortar. 1,100 gallons of limestone cleaner. The list is staggering. Fortunately, an expert team led by professionals from Roofing Solutions, Inc., Structural Engineering Associates, and MidContinental Restoration Company, has kept this $1.6 million project on schedule and on budget. Expected completion is scheduled for mid-year 2018 and now that warmer daytime temperatures have arrived, the pace of work will once again quicken. This historic project accelerates a 25-year plan and ensures the integrity and beauty of the beloved national landmark. Funding for this project comes from a combination of earned revenue, Union Station’s Preservation Fund as well as foundation, individual and corporate contributions. The most recently announced and generous gift of $500,000 came from The Sunderland Foundation. The Foundation invests in the places and spaces where nonprofits do their work - places where young minds grow and thrive, and where communities come together for celebration and inspiration. Union Station is indeed such a place. “It has been said that preservation is simply having the good sense to hold on to things that are well designed, that link us with our past in a meaningful way, and have plenty of good use left in them,” says Kent Sunderland, President

- Sunderland Foundation. “By supporting this special project, we proudly contribute toward the sustainability of where Kansas City truly does connect for history, adventure, celebration and inspiration.” With a total of $750,000 successfully raised, Station officials now turn to the Greater Kansas City community to help close the final gap.

“Major contributions like that from The Sunderland Foundation are essential in helping meet our preservation obligations and funding goals,” George Guastello, Union Station president and CEO, says. “Equally important is the participation of countless individual Kansas Citians and Union Station fans. Every dollar matters and makes a profound difference. We’re flattered with awards given to our attractions and programs. It’s the outpouring of financial support for projects like this, however, that truly humble us. New Gallery Brings 12 Original Railroads to Life The Newest Gallery of the Union Station Stories Exhibit

here’s a new gallery in Union Station filled with original artifacts and captivating works of art that take you back into the bygone eras of railroading. Located in the northeast corner of Grand Hall — just outside Pierpont’s — the Haverty Railroad Gallery is the newest addition to the Union Station Stories permanent history exhibit. Made possible by a generous gift from the Michael R. and Marlys Haverty Family Foundation, the exhibit features historically accurate paintings by the celebrated American Realist, Richard Allison, depicting the 12 railroads that originally founded Union Station. An impressive collection of additional rare railroad artifacts, including the Reed Family Model Locomotive, round out the impressive display.

“It is safe to say that I spend almost as much time on research as I do in actual painting,” Allison says. “The important point is to attempt to create a feeling of reality.” He’s certainly succeeded. His use of light and vivid colors are capturing attention from Union Station visitors of all ages. Allison hopes his pieces will help people understand the importance railroads have played in the building of our country, saying that “the legacy of the American railroad reflects more than anything the determination of the American spirit.” ■

MISSION: SCIENCE EDUCATION Science City in 2017 grew outdoors for the first time with Battle of the Brains III Simple Machines at Play. Wow, what a tremendous and immediate positive reaction! Then, in October, we unveiled plans to grow younger with a significant and game-changing investment in Kansas City’s youngest learners. And in November, the Top 20 finalists of Burns & McDonnell’s Battle of the Brains IV were announced resulting in a spectacular new $1-million dollar “Big Brain Theory” exhibit to open in Spring 2019. The pace in our internationally-awarded Science City never seems to slow . . . and that matches our enthusiasm for what we

2017 once again saw strong revenue growth across a balanced and sustainable resourcing approach. As a 501(C)3 non-profit organization, we’re fortunate to have the majority of our income generated from ticketed attendance while also benefiting from community support spanning the business, foundation and individual donor landscape. At the same time, proactive care for our magnificent historic Station requires ongoing and significant investment. Upon completion of our future-leading $8.4 million Western Expansion Project in 2017, we immediately turned our attention and resources toward a $1.6 million Exterior Preservation Project that will touch nearly every exterior historic surface. As well, we announced an ambitious and widely-hailed plan to bring a world-class Early Learning destination to Kansas City, inside Science City. So many exciting things are underway as 2018 unfolds! Economic diversity is our fiscal strength and a community committed to preserving her irreplaceable Union Station and growing our offerings gives us tremendous confidence. Science City Attendance Increase – Over 267,000 guests enjoyed Science City in 2017. This represents an astounding 20% growth over 2016 and an even more remarkable 39% growth over 2015 attendance.

GREATER KANSAS CITY SCIENCE & ENGINEERING FAIR As one of the region’s oldest (originating in 1951) and most celebrated annual fairs of its kind, the 2017 Fair at Union Station attracted over 800 entries from nearly 1,100 area students ranging in grades 4 through 12. Even more impressive, the top winners of our local event went on to win $12,000 and a sponsored trip to China at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair held in California. Kansas City continues to produce world-class STEM talent and Science City is proud to be not only host of the fair, but an important element in nurturing the life-long curiosity that fuels brilliant, young minds. SCIENCE CITY ON THE ROAD Nearly 8,350 students were reached thru 149 programs in 2017 as Science City took to the road in a brand new van (courtesy of Burns & McDonnell), with new programs and enthusiastic educators. Thru stage shows, Make & Take activities, Mobile Discovery Areas, GSK Science in the Summer Curriculum and more, students got up-close and hands-on with the thrill of STEM learning. Science City truly touched every corner of our community. SCIENCE CITY SCHOLARSHIPS In 2017, over 10,000 area students attended Science City thanks to scholarship funding. The sources of this generous and important funding included partnerships with Jackson County, Burns & McDonnell, Bayer and Joyce DiDonato.

Of course, science education doesn’t stop with Science City . . . ARVIN GOTTLIEB PLANETARIUM Over 66,000 guests marveled at our universe in our newly upgraded and awe-inspiring Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium. This represents a stellar 20% growth over 2016 attendance. New programs, including a live educator-led star tour, propelled our breathtaking, new venue onto the short list of “Must See Midwest Destinations.”

Through this program, educators were invited to apply for scholarships to bring underserved student populations to expand their minds and experience STEM topics in a powerful out-of-classroom environment. S.T.E.A.M. TEAM (Science City’s Super Heroes) Another year of in-home, Saturday morning science fun and another year of even more viewers experiencing our high-energy Science City lab coat superheroes, the S.T.E.A.M. Team! In total, this FOX 4 TV programming, delivered live every other Saturday morning, reached an estimated annual audience of over 691,000. That’s a huge number of kitchen sink and breakfast table experiments to get sleepy eyes wide awake and anxious to engage! SUMMER CAMP (At Capacity Each Summer) 2017 set another record for a high percentage of repeat attendance to Science City’s Summer Camp. Eight full weeks of day camp attracted 749 young minds for engaging, learning, laughing and exploring science topics. Enrollment included visitors from across the U.S. as well as internationally from South Korea, Spain and the United Kingdom. Members enjoy early enrollment and substantial discounts. Not a Member? BIRTHDAY PARTIES As Science City earned “Favorite Family-Friendly Attraction in Kansas City” in 2017, we also celebrated countless Birthday Parties in our one-of-a-kind venue. In fact, demand grew so big we recently increased the number of available parties for 2018 and beyond. If you’re going to blow out candles with the kids, you might as well do it in the coolest party space in KC! ■

TOURING EXHIBITIONS Blending Science with History, Art and Culture best describes our world-class Touring Exhibitions presented in the Bank of America Gallery. And in 2017, we enjoyed another record year with over 202,000 guests attending Pompeii: The Exhibition and Mummies of the World. MISSION: CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY As it was in 1914 when first opened, Union Station remains a community gathering destination for business, travel, technology, innovation and countless occasions to celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of our extended community. In 2017, we added more events and attracted more new audiences. Here’s a snapshot of just a few of those successes . . . 7TH ANNUAL MAKER FAIRE KANSAS CITY 2017 welcomed nearly 18,000 attendees from 33 States and 3 Countries. Make plans now to attend the 8th Annual Maker Faire happening June 23-24 right here at Union Station. It’s the Greatest Show (& Tell) on Earth! THE SOLAR ECLIPSE SHINED On Monday, August 21st, over 2,800 people gathered in our new outdoor Haverty Family Yards and Science City to witness the solar eclipse in near totality. An additional 6,000 gathered in River Market, where our Planetarium Educators presented fascinating content leading up to those remarkable eclipse moments. In total, we welcomed enthusiastic guests from multiple countries and dozens of states as the clouds parted at just the right time to offer a truly stellar solar view. SWING DANCES WERE A SMASH Bringing history to life is one of our specialties and in 2017, we hosted – along with KC Jazz Orchestra – two wildly successful dance events in our original North Waiting Room (now known as Grand Plaza). On July 7th, our USO Swing Dance at the Depot attracted nearly 600 enthusiastic fans and on November 3rd, over 700 music and dance lovers joined us for Gatsby Swing. No doubt, we’ve established a new tradition. For 2018, mark your calendars now for July 6th and November 9th. There’s a lot more swing coming your way! THE HOLIDAYS CAME ALIVE Growing bigger every year, Union Station’s “Holidays Come Alive” celebration kicked off on November 18th of 2017 and in total welcomed nearly 265,000 guests over the ensuing six weeks. Everywhere they turned, guests thrilled to spectacular decorations, entertainment, holiday activities and hands-on fun. As Kansas City’s favorite traditional holiday destination, we take memory-making seriously and are honored to be such an important part of so many family holiday plans. Just wait to see what we have in store for 2018. NEW YEAR’S EVE FOR EVERY AGE Two BIG events helped round out the season. Noon Year’s Eve in Science City welcomed over 3,500 for a day-long family celebration, followed by New Year’s Swingin’ Eve in Grand Plaza that, once again, delivered the most elegant and enthusiastic celebration in Kansas City with nearly 1,000 guests. What a way to wrap up one year and kick off the next! ■

Mission Preservation of History

MISSION: PRESERVATION OF HISTORY When your home is a 104-year-old, 850,000 square foot railroad station, preserving and presenting history is both a passion and privilege. Such is our case, and we’re proud to maintain that mission in multiple ways year-in and year-out. In 2017, preservation of history took several important forms . . . WESTERN EXPANSION COMPLETE - The largest construction project since the restoration and reopening of Union Station in 1999, this Expansion was comprised of multiple improvements to enhance our total guest experience. By all accounts, we exceeded expectations by investing wisely and in response to visitor input from across our community. Totaling $8.4 million, this massive undertaking added an award-winning Pedestrian & Vehicular Bridge connecting the front of Union Station to our West Yards Garage and grew a spectacular new outdoor green space – Haverty Family Yards – to host outdoor festivals, concerts, expanded Science City activations and private events. As well, we dramatically transformed our South Parking and added a beautiful new Festival area along Pershing Road. A ultra-efficient new Ticket Office was built, new Luxury Seating was installed in our Regnier Extreme Screen Theatre and a total technology and seating upgrade launched our Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium into world-class status. Our East Plaza (closest to the KC Streetcar stop) was recreated to be a high-function/highvalue new space. Other additions such as our new Connecting Portal and Entrepreneurial Conference Center transformed the connectivity, convenience and functionality of key spaces. Multiple supporters made this all possible and their investments will pay dividends for many years to come.

BUILDING PRESERVATION PROGRESS Begun in June, 2017 and scheduled to wrap up mid-year 2018. This proactive TLC of our historic building will touch nearly every exterior surface with needed repair, cleaning and protective applications. Now that warmer daytime temperatures have arrived, the pace of work will once again quicken. This important $1.6 million investment is funded by a combination of earned revenue, our Preservation Fund ($1/ticket) and private and corporate contributions. The most recently announced grant of $500,000 came from The Sunderland Foundation. UNION STATION STORIES EXPANSION On December 15th of last year, our newest addition to Union Station Stories was unveiled and became an instant hit with railroad fans of every age. “Haverty Railroad Gallery,” made possible by a generous donation from the Michael R. and Marlys Haverty Family Foundation, features 12 Richard Allison paintings depicting the twelve railroads that originally built Union Station. Additional artifacts displayed include the Reed Family Model Locomotive and a wonderful collection of vintage railroading items. Haverty Railroad Gallery is located in the northeast corner of Grand Hall, closest to Pierpont’s. ■

Our mission is to help inspire the next generation of STEM professionals and Science City is helping us do that every single day. Being a part of that is one of the most rewarding experiences in my career.” • Out of the office, Ray likes to invest his time and energy into organizations that support education, health and economic development. He’s the immediate past chair for United Way of Greater Kansas City, is on the Board of Directors for the Kansas City Area Development Council and Notre Dame de Sion, and serves on the executive committee of the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City, as well as the Kansas City Market Board of U.S. Bank. • Interesting Hobbies? “Although I am very tall and love basketball, I was never that good at it. But I have been an avid tennis player since my teens. To this day, I play the same person once or twice a week in a match. And I’ve kept a tally of our matches since 1989. Dreams are Coming True for Grandview Elementary Students Battle of the Brains Winners’ Imaginations Turning into Reality It was a moment 16 elementary students from the Grandview

School District will never forget. On November 30, 2017, the students in the FOCUS program at the Center for Alternative Instructional Resources (CAIR) were named the grand prize winners of the fourth annual Burns & McDonnell Battle of the Brains competition. “I hopped up, jumped up and down, and cried super hard!” says Jordan Sanders, a 4th-grader in the FOCUS program. “It was the best day of my life!” Jordan and her classmates were selected out of the record-setting 820 entries in one of the largest Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) competitions in the region which includes the chance to work alongside architects and engineers from Burns & McDonnell to create their $1-million brain and human health exhibit that will be enjoyed by countless kids and families for years to come at Science City. “The win brings a positive perception and shines a bright light on our district,” says Scott Bounds, a Grandview FOCUS teacher. Their efforts also won the CAIR students a $50,000 grant for their school, which will be used for a new technology center. The students couldn’t be more thrilled, and attribute their success to their teamwork. “We were all working toward the same thing,” says Gabi McBride, a Grandview student. “Even through the arguments, we knew what we wanted so it was easy to compromise.” Grandview’s winning idea explores the brain and how it controls

everything we do. It’s an engaging exhibit related to the brain’s affects on our five senses: sight, sound, taste, touch and smell. Devan, a Grandview student, says what he’s most looking forward to is “working with people at Burns & McDonnell and having ‘The Big Brain Theory’ come to life.” And that’s exactly what they’re doing now. The kids are already hard at work under the mentorship of Burns & McDonnell employees. “Our goal is to not only spark an interest in STEM, but to light a fire for a career in STEM,” says Ray Kowalik, Chairman and CEO of Burns & McDonnell. “That’s why winning the competition is just the beginning. Now, the Grandview students get a front-row seat working with our researchers, architects, construction managers and engineers.” We like to think that someday these Grandview students will visit the finished exhibit with their own children and be able to say, “Look what I did when I was your age,” proudly sharing what hard work can achieve, even at a young age. “After ‘The Big Brain Theory’ is built, it will be an amazing reminder of great accomplishment and pride,” says FOCUS teacher Vicki Adams. “The exhibit will also remind Grandview students that it was their achievement, and hopefully our students will always know that no dream is too big and hard work and teamwork do pay off.” ■

STEM Jobs Are on the Rise Kick Start Your Child’s Future at Science City’s 6th Annual Summer Camp June 4 – August 3 Spring has sprung and so has the moment when parents

glance at the calendar and realize only a few school months remain. Plans for summer are becoming a priority. And one popular “go to” solution is summer camp. The American Camp Association reports that each year, more than 14 million children (and adults) attend camp in the United States.* But with the evolution of a technology-driven society, just any ole’ summer camp won’t do. The future is here, and it requires a continuum of world-class STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) based camps like that of award winning Science City. With eight weeks of interactive, engaging and fun activities for kids, ages 6-12, our educators have cracked the code for summer learning. And Camp parents share that sentiment . . .

“It is hard to please both my children (8-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl),” says one Science City Summer Camp parent. “They both told me they would absolutely attend this camp again.”

“Very organized . . . I was amazed at what the kids accomplished in a week.”

“My daughter has been performing experiments at home and told me she wants to teach science as a profession.”

According to the Smithsonian Science Education Center, 2.4 million STEM jobs went unfilled in 2017, and job growth is projected to increase from 10-23% by 2020. So, there’s never been a better time to prepare your child for what could grow into a rewarding career . . . and it can all begin this summer at Science City.

“Once We Started Going, It Was Hard to Stop” New Union Station Member Shares Her Experience When Susan Loyacono’s 7-year-old son came home raving about his field trips to

Union Station, she was intrigued. “The place sounded so lively, colorful, and interactive that it felt imaginary,” Susan says. “I had to see it for myself.” And so she did. Meet “The Train Kid” One of Union Station’s Youngest Volunteers traditional pursuits, 11-year-old Parker Presley is at Union Station serving as a volunteer. “I like getting to meet everyone,” he says. “Everyone is so nice and I like that I get to play with these amazing trains.” Parker is one of the youngest volunteers at Union Station, and has been helping in the Model Rail exhibit since he was 6 years old. From weekly upkeep to assisting with the annual holiday display, he thoroughly enjoys it all. “We always thought this would be a passing phase,” says his mom, Sandra Bridges. “He doesn’t do sports and he’s just gone full throttle with trains.” Lucky for us. We’re grateful for volunteers like Parker. In fact, this April for Volunteer Appreciation Month, we will celebrate all those who helped log more than 31,000 total volunteer hours in 2017. “I am constantly humbled by how generous our volunteers are with their time and talent. They truly love this second home here at the Station,” says Stacie Moody, Volunteer Engagement Supervisor. “And they inspire us every day, no matter their age or interest.” Volunteers of all ages are vitally important to Union Station.
