HOLIDAYS at Union Station Every Moment Offers Something Magical

In late September the first of our holiday decorations were pulled

from storage to be readied for what is sure to be another recordbreaking and memory-making season of festive celebration at your Union Station. Thousands of lights to check and ornaments to unpack. Hundreds of custom pieces to inspect and install. And dozens of new creations to add to what has become Kansas City’s largest indoor and most anticipated traditional holiday destination. And now, with each visit, you and your family will be surrounded by this labor of love as our gift to you . . . right here in Kansas City’s home. It is indeed a grand time to marvel at the holiday sights and sounds that fill our massive halls. And it’s the perfect time to put Union Station on your family holiday calendar. In fact, with all we have planned, we’re betting you’ll be back again and again. Check out pages 10 - 11 of this magazine for a quick view of what’s coming. And, stay connected and up-to-the-moment by following Union Station and Science City on Facebook. From the spectacle of Quixotic at our Nov. 19th Holidays Come Alive kickoff event, to mini train rides, to visits with Santa and tours of the Kansas City Southern Holiday Express . . . nearly every moment offers something magical. First-run movies and holiday classics in our Regnier Extreme Screen Theatre. Family photo opportunities galore. Huge model train displays. Live productions in our City Stage venue. And, of course, all sorts of themed, hands-on activities in Science City to engage visitors of every age. All the way through New Year’s Eve, we’ll be celebrating as only Union Station can with history, music, dancing, dining and a sense of community that rings clearly in our historic halls. What a brilliant and fitting way to end a fantastic Union Station year. And what a year it’s been . . . • Our massive Western Expansion project has added substantial new guest conveniences, with many more to come.

• New attractions—both large and small—have been added throughout the Station and Science City, including Force & Motion in our science center and the Escape Room near our lower level entrance. • Maker Faire once again enjoyed great success as one of the most fascinating and fun family destinations for Kansas City (watch for details of Maker Faire VII set for late June, 2017). • BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life was presented in our Bank of America Gallery and introduced the beauty and complexity of the human body to nearly 80,000 guests by the time it closed. • And in September, POMPEII: The Exhibition was announced as our next world-class touring exhibition, running from Nov. 18th thru Spring of 2017 and presented by Bank of America. These are only but a few highlights from 2016. So much has happened to preserve our past and expand opportunities to ensure our bright future. The common thread throughout? The hundreds of thousands of wonderful memories we are privileged to help create. And the moments we’re able to teach, share, entertain, inspire and connect. That’s what Union Station is about and we can’t do any of it without you. So, as the holidays embrace each of us, please know how much we appreciate you and your ongoing support of the Station. We look forward to seeing you again and again as this magical season unfolds and finally welcomes us into yet another exciting new year. With Grand Tradition, The Holidays Come Alive at Union Station S

hortly after Union Station opened its doors in October 1914, Kansas Citians began gathering within its walls to celebrate a wide range of events. The warmth of the building and its grand beauty captured imaginations and drew people from near and far. It was the memories made within the walls of Union Station by generations of Kansas Citians—not just during the holidays, but every day—that ultimately helped rescue and restore our magnificent monument. And in 1999, when the Station reopened, Kansas City’s most grand setting for holiday memory making came to life again. Since then, it’s reclaimed its proud place as Kansas City’s home, where the holidays come alive! This November 19th, the biggest celebration yet will officially commence. That day will be packed with special family programming and entertainment culminating with the lighting of the region’s largest indoor holiday tree. As is the tradition, the celebration will be a mix of old and new. Last year, it was the addition of a stunning multisensory performance by the intensely creative minds of Quixotic.

6

For this year, Quixotic has one again fused technology, music, dance and innovative performance art into an all new, mesmerizing performance which will leave you absolutely speechless. From that day forward, there will be many reasons for return visits because our celebration officially lasts thru New Year’s Eve. That’s a total of six weeks . . . more than enough time to make memories that will last a lifetime. It all begins the minute you step thru Union Station’s stately brass doors. The traditional décor, miles of lights and garland, multiple 30-foot wreaths, and special holiday creations crafted by a team of artisans and assembled by our caring and jolly staff of volunteers, create a magnificent display of holiday cheer that literally is a feast for the senses. At night, in Grand Hall, with its 95-foot tall ceilings and marble floors, holiday lights cast a magical glow that is uniquely beautiful. There’s really nothing else like it in Kansas City.

“Union Station offers an enchanting holiday experience for Kansas Citians and visitors alike,” Bob Regnier, Board Chairman of Union Station Kansas City, said. “The combination of lavish holiday décor, events, displays and exhibits allow our visitors to connect with Kansas City’s holiday history and make new memories of their own in this most elegant and historic setting.” Kansas City Southern’s Holiday Express is another annual favorite that attracts thousands of children of all ages. When the festive train rolls into Union Station (on December 16) with its signature smiling face of “Rudy,” laughter, amazement and sheer delight will ensue. Visitors will walk through three holiday-themed train cars; visit with Santa and his elves and soak in the wonder of the holidays that makes every guest feel like a kid. There is no charge to tour the train but due to its popularity, we highly suggest visiting unionstation.org to reserve a spot in line.

Add in perennial crowd pleasers such as the Holiday Model Train exhibit; the popular Holiday Classic Movie series on the Regnier Extreme Screen featuring Elf, Christmas Vacation and The Polar Express; a year-end fun and learning fest, Noon Year’s Eve at Science City for the kids; and our traditional New Year’s Swingin’ Eve with the high energy, and vintage sounds of the famed Dave Stephens Band and you might just want to get your calendar out now and schedule your entire holiday season at Union Station. It may sound cliché, but the grand traditions of the holiday not only live at Union Station, they come ALIVE here in Kansas City’s historic home. We look forward to welcoming you back home again and again this entire season! ■ EXPERIENCE A MAGICAL KANSAS CITY TRADITION The 2016 Holiday Season begins November 19 with the Annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony and Kickoff Event. HOLIDAYS Union Station On Track • Winter 2016

Model Trains And Holiday Traditions No one knows for certain who laid the track and ran the first toy

train around a Christmas tree, but Joshua Lionel Cowen—founder of the legendary company that bears his middle name—was the man who elevated the idea to near-mythical status, forevermore establishing the iconic holiday tradition. The story—which may have been embellished over the years— goes something like this . . . Cowen and partner Harry C. Grant were already in business in Manhattan, New York, producing electric-powered fans (which didn’t sell very well) for the general public and electric explosive fuses for the U. S Navy (which did sell well). The Lionel Manufacturing Company was thus established and growing. Cowen, barely past his 23rd birthday and always on the lookout for ways to expand his business, was roaming the streets of lower Manhattan in 1901 and happened upon a toy and novelty store owned by a Robert Ingersoll. Peering in the front display window, young Cowen noticed that all of the splendid toys were static. There were balancing clowns and cast-iron fire trucks pulled by galloping horses, wind-up boats and tin locomotives with pull strings. But they were all just sitting there. As Cowen studied what he found to be a boring display, his mind was racing, trying to figure a way to bring some life, some animation to the staid scene. It needed something in continual motion, something to draw people to the window, stop them from their hurried New York pace. Something that would require little maintenance. A merry go round? A windmill with rotating blades? “What if it moved, ran around in a circle…?” Cowen would recall thinking in his later years. That was it!

His idea was a battery-powered train car on a loop of track that would use one of the fan motors he and Grant were producing! He excitedly ran inside the store and explained his idea to a skeptical Ingersoll, hurried back to the office and he and Grant cobbled together something resembling a cigar box on wheels with the letters “ELECTRIC EXPRESS” on each side. The gondola-style car ran on metal strips set into wood ties and brought Cowen $4. The electric car would carry Ingersoll’s products around the little circle of track and entice customers to buy the store’s goods, or so went the theory. But the car and track quickly became the most sought-after toy in the window. Ingersoll eventually ordered a dozen, and many other New York stores followed suit. Cowen and Grant were off and running. They had to start farming out the manufacturing of parts to keep up with demand. Fast forward to the 1920’s. Cowen was a marketing genius and realized that a relatively expensive toy like a train or a train set could best be sold as a very special occasion item. With that understanding, his products were promoted to dealers across America as Christmas gifts, primarily for boys and their fathers. His annual catalog, distributed in the early fall was a highly anticipated event. A Lionel train running around the Christmas tree graced catalog covers from those early years, and the annual, beloved ritual is with us even today, after more than a full century. Of course, model train displays such as Union Station’s have taken the “round the tree” concept to an impressive new level. And our hundreds of thousands of holiday visitors seem to greatly appreciate the extra efforts. Look carefully and you’ll even find a few of our trains proudly wearing the “Lionel” name. ■

Magical Holiday Movie Classics Return to Regnier Extreme Screen T

he magic of a classic holiday movie is nearly certain in its ability to slow a hectic pace, thaw a chilly heart and set a festive mood that lasts an entire season. Terrific love stories. Silly comedies. Timeless musicals. You likely can recite their lines and sing their tunes. Indeed, that’s why we call them “classics” and turn to them year after wonderful year. This holiday season, relive your favorites with family and friends. And do so in Kansas City’s most magically decorated holiday home, Union Station. For the 4th year in a row, our Regnier Extreme Screen Theatre will feature three all-time favorites. And once again, tickets will be priced at a family-friendly $3 each. So pick your favorite or see them all! But make plans today, as these classic movies fill up fast . . .

Elf Nov 25 - Dec 1 As a baby, Buddy crawls into Santa’s toy bag and is unintentionally whisked off to the North Pole, where he is raised as an elf. A misfit who grows to be three times the size of his elf family, Buddy ultimately heads to his birthplace of New York City to find his family. Unfortunately, they turn out to be a less-than-loving father and a cynical ten-year-old stepbrother who doesn’t believe in Santa. Worst of all, they all seem to have forgotten the true meaning of Christmas. But using his simple elf ways, Buddy sets out to single-handedly win over his family and save Christmas in New York, hoping to at last find his true place in the world. Oh, and can you name the four major food groups for elves?

12

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation Dec 2 - 8 As the holidays approach, Clark Griswold plans to have a perfect family Christmas. He works hard to have everything in order, including the traditional tree and over-the-top outdoor house decorations. However, things go awry quickly when quirky in-laws and Cousin Eddie’s family arrive to join the festivities. Even worse, Clark’s employer reneges on the expected holiday bonus which spirals into a rollercoaster ride of mishaps all the way to a charming and crazy conclusion. Anyone need a “Jelly-of-the-Month Club” Membership?

The Polar Express (PJ Party Every Day) Dec 9 - 15 Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis reunite for “Polar Express,” an inspiring adventure based on the beloved children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg. When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. Do you remember who says, “better fix that hole in your pocket”? Union Station invites your young ones to come in their PJs to complete the magic. And check the schedule for Spanishlanguage showtimes. ■ The 4th Annual Holiday Movie Classics begin November 25 and run through December 15, 2016. Holiday Shopping at Union Station

Still a Timeless Tradition Union Station has always been “more than a train station.” In fact,

in its early years, the Station was described as “a little city within the city.” And no time of year reminds us more of this wonderful reality than the holiday season. Shortly after the Station opened in 1914, it became known as a place where people celebrated, met for wonderful meals and shopped for some of the most prized holiday gifts in town. Kansas City’s transportation center was literally a bigger-than-life destination to explore with sights, sounds and smells that excited every sense. From mouth-watering candies, exotic fruit, books of far-off adventures and Cuban cigars to toy trains circling overhead and a perfume collection “as comprehensive as you can find anywhere,” a gift from Union Station was something special. Today, that tradition continues and it’s easier than ever to find the perfect gift that’s meaningful, memorable and just flat-out fun. At the heart of your Union Station shopping are the Kansas City and Science City Stores located in Grand Hall. Have you explored them lately? “As Union Station has become the face and place of KC, we have merchandised our stores to surprise and delight our guests both locally, nationally and internationally,” Shayne Reber, Retail Director, said. “We are truly world-class cultural retail stores with options for nearly everyone, including gift items you just won’t find elsewhere and at prices for any budget.”

14

Hot holiday items this year include: • A wonderful hand-painted keepsake ornament depicting Union Station on one side—and the Kansas City Southern Holiday Express Train on the other—packaged in an ornament box ($15 with any purchase; a 50% savings); • Fun and uniquely decorated ‘Ugly Sweaters’ . . . yes, you read that correctly! ($25 with any purchase; a near 30% savings); • Themed holiday shirts highlighting your Science IQ ($25-30); • Mystical Himalayan Salt Lamps (a top seller since 2014 and only $15 with any purchase; a 50% savings); • Kansas City Train Ornament ($11.99); • Limited Edition Union Station Kansas City Hardback Book by Jeffrey Spivak of the Kansas City Star—The story of Union Station, a monument to the golden era of railroad passenger service and reborn as Science City and beyond ($29.99); • Tech Gadgets galore ($9.99 and up) and much, MUCH more! And best of all, your purchase at one of our stores directly supports the mission of Union Station and Science City. Now that’s a gift that keeps on giving! So continue the tradition of finding something special at the Station. The options are endless and the prices are unbeatable. Same-day gift wrapping is available, as well as “Union Station Member Holiday Specials.” “The holidays are truly incredible at the Station . . . always have been,” Reber said. “The sights, sounds and spirit of joy is magical. It’s like working inside a giant, glorious snow globe that delights everyone who stops to look in. A little city within our wonderful city . . . that’s a great description. Come see us and let us share it with you!” ■ UNION STATION HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE! Visit UnionStation.org/Holidays for special offers from all of our attractions and restaurants. Pierpont’s turn of the century décor provides an elegant backdrop to both lunch and dinner. It’s the perfect festive location for a formal family gathering or an intimate holiday dinner for two with an award-winning wine list and unique creations by some of the area’s finest chefs. And their grand 30-foot tall mahogany bar is the setting for perhaps the most beautiful Happy Hour in town. If your holiday plans call for a larger gathering, consider Pierpont’s newly opened, Belvedere Room (meaning “beautiful view”). Located on the second floor of Union Station, it offers a unique dining experience for larger gatherings with seating for up to 65 guests. To inquire about using this unique space, contact Pierpont’s Robbie McGowan at 816- 221-5111.

HARVEY’S BEST SUNDAY BRUNCH/Silver – Ingram’s Best of Business Award Your more casual dining destination at the Station is Harvey’s— located in the center of Grand Hall in the footprint of the Station’s original Ticket Office. Featuring spectacular views and equally delicious meals, Harvey’s is a favorite for breakfast and lunch. English immigrant Fred Harvey actually opened more than 80 “Harvey House” restaurants serving rail stops from the Midwest to California. Unlike other diners near the rails, his restaurants were clean and served fresh, reasonably priced favorites on table linens and china. When the original Harvey House opened in Union Station in 1914 it offered a comfortable dining option for GI’s, families, travelers and locals alike. Today, Harvey’s embraces those same priorities of fresh favorites, served in a beautiful surrounding and complimented with great value. Harvey’s offers a wide array of breakfast and lunch items. And Sunday Brunch at Harvey’s . . . well, it’s nearly as famous and beloved as the Station itself. Offered every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Harvey’s brunch is unmatched. Brunch reservations are highly recommended and may be made by calling 816-460-2274. The holidays are the perfect time to share a meal with family and friends. Let “Dining at the Depot,” at both of our award-winning restaurants, be part of your most cherished holiday and year-round traditions. ■ MAKE PLANS TODAY! A Volcano Awakens A City Vanishes W

hen Mount Vesuvius erupted on the morning of August 24 in 79 AD, the citizens of Pompeii and neighboring cities likely thought the world was coming to an end. A dense black cloud filled the sky. Ash and pumice began to rain down. By midnight, the first pyroclastic flows—waves of pumice, hot ash, rock and volcanic gas—rushed down the side of Vesuvius. By the next day, the once vibrant city lay buried in up to 15 feet of volcanic debris. All life had stopped . . . as if frozen in time. Plates of food, flowing fountains, magnificent frescoes, and people—hundreds and hundreds—some huddled together, others crawling up staircases or frantically searching for shelter . . . all perfectly preserved. Indeed, what nature destroyed in only a few short and terrifying hours, it also forever saved in what is the most unique and stunning record of day-to-day life in ancient Italy.

“We wanted to bring this most historical event back to life and allow visitors to relive it vividly,” John Norman, president, Exhibitions International and producer of POMPEII: The Exhibition, said. “This new exhibition allows you to explore treasures and experience life in the bustling city of Pompeii before time essentially stopped. Guests will relive the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in a 4D eruption theatre before stepping into the last gallery featuring the most iconic artifacts of Pompeii . . . actual body casts of those who perished. Union Station’s firstclass 20,000 square foot Bank of America Gallery and stellar reputation in the worldwide exhibition community makes Kansas City an easy first choice when it comes to an international tour of this importance.” POMPEII: The Exhibition features nearly 200 precious artifacts on loan from the unparalleled collection of the Naples National Archaeological Museum in Italy. Included in that list are 10 artifacts that have never been seen in any exhibition in the United States. Those items include a first century, bronze gladiator helmet; a Citharist bronze statue of Apollo, dating to 50 A.D; and several remarkable fresco paintings, including one of Dionysus and Silenus, dating between 50-79 A.D.

Union Station On Track • Winter 2016

“The exhibition gives an extraordinary look at the city of Pompeii’s archeological treasures that rarely leave Italy,” George Guastello, president and CEO of Union Station, said. “It is one of the most fascinating and important exhibitions of ancient archaeology and humanity ever seen and it’s here thru spring of 2017. What an honor for Union Station and Kansas City.” POMPEII: The Exhibition is a media-rich, object-based, immersive experience that brings to life the bustling commercial port and strategic military and trading center. Artifacts— including frescoes, mosaics, and statues from the sites—will recreate a sense of this world as you discover how its people lived, loved, worked, worshipped, and found entertainment.

A fascinating experience of discovery awaits as Union Station guests uncover the mysteries of an ancient Roman city buried and nearly forgotten . . . until now!

THE EXPERIENCE INCLUDES: • Introductory theatre with dramatic reconstructions that describe Pompeii and the nearby volcano. • Projections, audio, video, photographic murals, and graphic recreations of frescoes and mosaics to paint a vivid and accurate picture of the city, including a traditional home, market, temple, theater, baths and more. • Nearly 200 authentic artifacts to help bring the story of Pompeii to life, including mosaics and frescoes, gladiator helmets, armor, and weapons, a ship’s anchor, lamps, jugs, cups, plates, pots and pans and other household objects as well as intricately-sculpted statues, furniture, jewelry, medical instruments, and tools. • A simulated eruption theatre to allow you to experience the deadly impact Mount Vesuvius had on this ancient city, culminating in the reveal of full body casts of twisted human forms, asphyxiated by extreme heat and noxious gases and forever frozen in time.

THE LOST CITY Mount Vesuvius erupted on August 24, 79 AD, and sent a cloud of ash, pumice stone, and smoldering hot volcanic gases high into the sky. People could see the eruptions for hundreds of miles. The debris made its way down to the earth as it began to cool. The volcano had been active for millennia before the eruption of 79, but had been dormant for generations, and thus caught the ancient Romans off-guard. REDISCOVERY Local inhabitants had long been aware of antiquities buried in their midst, and well diggers at Herculaneum, not far from Pompeii, discovered the theater of that city in 1738. A decade later attention shifted to Pompeii, which was not so deeply buried and more easily excavated. The ruins of the city had previously been accidentally encountered in 1592 by engineers digging a canal, but they were not interested in the antiquities and continued with their project, leaving the ancient city relatively untouched. REDISCOVERY TIMELINE HIGHLIGHTS 1709-1711: A farmer sinking a well struck Herculaneum’s ancient theater, in which he found handsome ancient marble sculptures. An Austrian general acquired the land, had deep tunnels dug and for two years plundered the site for antiquities. 1738: Employing miners, soldiers and convicts, Charles I, the 22-year-old representative of a brand new Tuscan-Spanish dynasty installed in the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily, launched a treasure hunt at Herculaneum. Hundreds of sculptures, columns and frescoes were hacked from walls and removed. 1740: Originally thought to be the city of Stabiae, it was later discovered that the buried city was Pompeii. The city was crudely plundered after excavations began. For decades there was no attempt to record or preserve the site, and countless objects were destroyed. The finest frescoes and artifacts went into the royal collection, today housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. 1750-1764: Karl Weber, a Swiss army engineer directs excavations at Herculaneum and Pompeii. He is the first to conduct systematic digs, and to record uncovering of the sites. 1760: The first to attempt a methodical approach at Pompeii was German art historian, J.J. Winckelmann, considered the father of archaeology. He catalogued Pompeian loot, and because the city was buried under a shallow layer of lightweight pyroclastic matter, speedy excavation was both possible and a priority to limit the number of thefts. 1765: Excavations at Herculaneum were suspended after the Temple of Isis is discovered at Pompeii. 1805-1815: Coming under French rule, the kingdom of Naples is run by Napoleon’s sister and brother-in-law. Thanks to Queen Caroline Bonaparte Murat’s keen interest in archaeology, French architects excavated and surveyed Pompeii, and the forum was discovered. 1817: Sir William Gell, living in Naples, published Pompeiiana, the first English guidebook on Pompeii. New editions were printed for decades. 1830-1832: The Alexander Mosaic, circ 100 BCE, was discovered during excavation of the House of the Faun. The complex floor mosaic, 19 by 10 feet—a copy of a famous earlier Macedonian fresco or painting—depicted young Alexander’s victory over Darius, King of Persia. 1860-1875: The archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli, director of excavations at Pompeii for a newly unified Italy, introduced innovative methods. Frescoes were no longer removed from walls and sent to the Naples museum but were left in place. Fiorelli cleared the streets of debris, and numbered streets and buildings. From hollows left by decaying organic matter he made plaster casts that reconstruct bodies of dead people, and also those of animals and trees. WATCH THE FULL TRAILER AT UNIONSTATION.ORG/POMPEII

Meet the Board

Left: Walter Cronkite, who once lived and worked in Kansas City, came back to encourage supporters and to film a commercial for the bi-state tax.

Mayor Michael “Mike” Copeland City of Olathe, KS (Serving his fifth term since April 2001) • Joined Union Station Kansas City Board of Directors – May 2001; Elected Vice Chairman March 2016 “I believe Union Station tells the story of our unique history and heritage, as well as the story of our pride and progress as a community and region. It represents both the rich legacy of our past and the promise of tomorrow. It allows us to enrich lives through education and science, which is very important to me. It’s also integral to our success and who we are as a community. It has been a great honor to be part of preserving and celebrating an amazing and cherished part of our history, ensuring that it will be enjoyed by present and future generations.” “One of the first meals I enjoyed after moving to Kansas City was at the former Lobster Pot. It was partially located in the inflated bubble within Grand Hall. What a first impression! Now, Union Station serves as our community’s front porch—something in which we can all take tremendous pride.” Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Bi-State Initiative “After failed attempts to secure funding for the restoration of Union Station, the establishment of the Kansas and Missouri Metropolitan Culture District provided the perfect opportunity for our region to save a Kansas City icon. It gave all of us a great chance to participate and share in the success of that effort. Our long-standing emotional investment in Union Station ultimately resulted in our significant financial investment as a result of the District. Serving on the Bi-State Commission for several years as Treasurer, Vice Chair, and Chair provided me with first-hand experience and an incredible vantage point to see the re-birth of Union Station. What a sight it was!” • Fun Fact: “Nearing the completion of the renovation project, in a kind of ‘topping off’ ceremony, a few of us Commissioners were afforded the opportunity to climb 90+ feet of scaffolding in the Grand Hall to write our names on the upper side of one of the rosettes. I will never forget that moment.” • Mayor Copeland also serves on the Olathe Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the KVC Health Systems, Inc. Board of Directors, and the Johnson County Community College Foundation Board. Mike is a past member of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Board and is past Chairman of the Johnson and Wyandotte Counties Council of Mayors. • A graduate of MidAmerica Nazarene University, Mayor Copeland is Olathe Market President at Bank of Blue Valley. He and his wife Maria live in Olathe with their two daughters, Olivia and Abigail, and son Joshua. ■

NOVEMBER 1996

Voters in Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson County in Kansas approve a one-eighth of one cent bistate sales tax to help restore and redevelop Union Station and create a science museum. The tax raised $118 million toward the total $250 million project. The remaining money was raised through private donations and federal funds. The passage of the bi-state tax is thought to be the first of its kind in the history of the United States. As promised, the tax ended precisely at the time the voter-approved total was achieved. Local Railroad Family Supports Union Station Western Expansion $1 Million Gift Recently Announced Image Above: Extended Haverty Family

“Marlys and I come from simple backgrounds,” Mike Haverty,

former Board Chairman of Union Station Kansas City and retired Chairman, CEO and president of Kansas City Southern, said. “Our philosophy is that if you are successful, you have an obligation to help others and give back to the community, to help make it a better place.” Indeed, with their recent $1 million gift announcement from the Michael and Marlys Haverty Family Foundation toward the significant Union Station Western Expansion project, that philosophy of generosity has once again been put into action. The Haverty family started in the railroad business in 1865 when Irish immigrant, carpenter and laborer Thomas W. Haverty arrived in Atchison, Kansas to help build a railroad west. His sons Thomas Jr and Joseph, his grandsons Thomas III and Harold, and his great-grandson Michael all worked on the line. Michael, aka Mike or Mick, was the first to enter railroad management. When Mike left Missouri Pacific in 1970 to work for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, it ended 105 years of his family on the MoPac and its predecessors. Mike went on to spend 21 years at Santa Fe, becoming president in 1989, and later 20 years at Kansas City Southern, headquartered in Kansas City. The majority of the Haverty gift is being used to construct a significant new outdoor area—to be named “Haverty Family Yards”— which includes a beautiful new full-acre festival space suitable for community events and activities both large and small. This new space sits in the very footprint of the historic rail yards under Union Station where 18 separate tracks welcomed thousands of trains—starting in 1914—as they operated alongside elevated platforms to deposit millions of passengers—including many immigrants coming to this area—and welcomed aboard millions more traveling throughout the country. As well, during WWII, hundreds of thousands of our military personnel arrived, departed and passed through Union Station on these tracks. “We especially love the idea that our family—including our children and grandchildren who reside in Kansas City—is able to pay tribute

22

to Union Station and railroad history in the very place it happened,” Marlys Haverty, said. “Using reclaimed steel rails and timbers, for example, the artistic screening around Haverty Family Yards will recognize the countless trains that passed across this hallowed ground. For the Haverty family, it’s important to pass that history on to new generations who will come to enjoy this beautiful area for family fun, festivals and concerts and access the new Science City outdoor expansion. Creating new Kansas City experiences tied to Kansas City and railroad history in effect bridges multiple generations together and passes on the best of who we are as a community.”

“From The Haverty Family Yards, in one sweeping view, you’ll see the historic Union Station building, the modern Science City, the downtown skyline and the active Kansas City Terminal tracks where countless daily freight trains of the five major railroads serving Kansas City and Amtrak operate from one part of our country to another,” Mike Haverty said. “We especially love this location as it ties past, present and future together in such a visually compelling way. Union Station is a tremendous bi-state success story and Kansas City’s icon. This new outdoor area will add to and enhance what is already a community treasure.”

Excitement Continues to Grow As Western Expansion Hits More Milestones

Nearly twelve months ago, Union Station broke ground on our largest

construction project since the massive, restored monument reopened in 1999. Now, as the outdoor elements of the Western Expansion wind down, here’s a quick update of where things stand and what’s to come . . .

NORTH OUTDOOR FESTIVAL AREA “Haverty Family Yards” • New Outdoor Festival area complete. • Science City Outdoor Expansion footprint in place with new interactive Battle of The Brains “Simple Machines” elements scheduled for spring 2017 installation. Image Above: Marlys and Mike Haverty inspect construction site.

Additionally, the Haverty gift will create a new Railroad Gallery inside Union Station featuring twelve stunning paintings by Richard Allison depicting the historical trains of the original twelve railroads that founded Union Station Kansas City in 1914. “Mike describes his first impression of Union Station – dating back to the early 1950’s when he traveled with his maternal grandmother and brother, Joe, on trains across the country—as unforgettable,” Bob Regnier, Union Station Board Chairman, said. “His love of the Station never faded. In fact, it was that passion that prevailed during the Station’s most challenging years. Mike, working with the Union Station Board, management and business and civic leaders, was determined to help find the right business balance and mix to secure a solid future for this iconic monument. Today, as we take in this architectural masterpiece and feel the vibrancy that lives in these walls, we owe a deep debt of gratitude to Marlys and Mike Haverty. This latest and very generous gift to our Western Expansion is the manifestation of their determination and commitment to make Kansas City a better place.” “It’s been an unbelievable ride,” Mike Haverty said. “There’s an old saying about getting the railroad in your blood and never getting it out.” The same must be said about the Haverty’s philanthropic careers. Once in their blood, there’s no getting it out. Good news for all of us and for our entire community. ■

Let’s take a tour...

and ask all the questions you’d like! 8

4-year-old Union Station volunteer Leonard Dunaway knows a thing or two about the history of the Station and is happy to share his knowledge with anyone interested. On most days, finding “interested guests” is not a challenge. And that’s just the way Leonard likes it. Leonard’s personal connection to the depot began at the age of 19, visiting the Station with his aunt who remembered the historic opening in 1914. Over the years, Leonard visited the Station many times, including during his military service. His interest in the building never faded. So, fittingly, when he was contacted in the early summer of 1996 by Friends of Union Station to help lead Hard Hat Tours, he gladly volunteered. “We were told a bi-state tax could help rescue Union Station and fund its massive renovations,” Leonard, said. “On September 24, 1996, we began giving daily ‘Hard Hat Tours’ during lunch and on the weekends. We started in the street describing the exterior stonework of the Station, followed by a walk thru Grand Hall which was filled with scaffolding that held up pieces of the ceiling. We then gathered in the old Harvey’s CNY_2017_Tracks.pdf 10/11/16 3:00Room) PM Restaurant (now the Kansas City 1Chamber Board for a boxed

lunch and a briefing on how the tax would work. The tours ended the Saturday before the November 1996 vote and the rest—as you know —is history.” Union Station was restored to its former glory and reopened to the public on November 10, 1999. This year—celebrating 20 years since the historic bi-state vote—Leonard still provides tours, but now with a proud sense of accomplishment rather than concern. “Images of Union Station are everywhere,” Leonard said. “Our grand monument reminds us all of what matters. The stories of the Station live on. What a privilege it is for me to share what I know and love with the next generation of supporters.” Tours are FREE and can be booked at unionstation.org or by phone at 816-460-2020. ■ BECOME A VOLUNTEER!
