At an increasing number of high-end restaurants, artistry on the plate is complemented by masterpieces on the walls.

The most memorable dining involves all the senses, and artistic impressions on the plate are frequently paired not only with great wines, but with world-class paintings or sculptures as well. Showcasing art heightens the dining experience and some restaurants known for their culinary arts double as art galleries.

At New York’s Le Bernardin, Chef/Co-Owner Eric Ripert’s seafood-centric compositions have earned every imaginable accolade, including a rarefied trio of Michelin stars. As part of Le Bernardin’s 2011 renovation, a 24-foot-long triptych oil painting, Deep Water No. 1 by Ran Ortner, was installed. The formidable seascape brings energy to the room while helping define the sense of purpose. “Art is very important to a guest’s overall dining experience. It has the power to transform the atmosphere of a room, instilling an emotional response,” said Ripert. Addressing the Ortner piece specifically, he said, “It sets the mood for guests who come from the hectic city into the soothing marine atmosphere of Le Bernardin.”

Pao by Paul Qui, located at the glamorous Faena Hotel in Miami Beach, gets high marks for globally eclectic dishes, such as uni with corn pudding and sake aioli or Wagyu short rib with red curry. Pao is also known for chic designs and provocative art. Most notable is Damien Hirst’s “Golden Myth,” a towering bronze and gold-leaf unicorn in the center of the dining room beneath a domed ceiling. The sculpture explores the boundaries between legend and reality, and it is a tribute to the power of imagination that inspires Qui’s culinary musings.

In Atlanta, tucked into the stony St. Regis Hotel, Atlas is among five restaurants in the city to be honored with a Michelin star. Enhancing the enjoyment of Chef Freddy Money’s imaginative contemporary American cuisine, Atlas features art from the Lewis Collection, one of the most impressive private art collections in the world. The exhibit rotates regularly—pieces by Picasso, Van Gogh, and Chagall have appeared—and the restaurant currently showcases works by renowned Japanese-born painter and printmaker Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita. “Atlas elevates the dining experience by integrating art into its core identity,” said Greg Walker, Managing Director of Tavistock Restaurant Collection. He added, “The restaurant sets itself apart by seamlessly blending fine dining with a world-class art experience.”

The Peninsula is a Beverly Hills hotel acclaimed for its art collection, as well as its celebrity clientele. Its fine dining restaurant, The Belvedere, features contemporary artwork from Yayoi Kusama, Alex Katz, and Sean Scully. The dining room’s signature artistic statement is a multi-panel piece by French artist Fabienne Verdier, and an iconic Robert Indiana sculpture anchors the terrace. “As an artist brings a canvas to life with each brushstroke, we craft our dishes with the same precision and passion,” reported Executive Chef Ralf Schlegel, who added, “The art that adorns our walls serves as daily inspiration.”

In New York’s West Village, a neighborhood filled with art galleries, Chef/Owner Kurt Gutenbrunner presents classics from his native Austria at Wallsé, but contemporary elements enliven the menu. In addition to its highly respected cuisine, the restaurant showcases art from Hermann Nitsch, Julian Schnabel, and filmmaker Gus Van Sant. “It’s not just about food and wine, but the entire experience,” explained Gutenbrunner, evoking the German term gesamtkunstwerk (“total piece of art”) to illuminate the concept. Gutenbrunner reports the art that resonates with him has little to do with his Austrian cuisine or heritage. “It’s about personality more than nationality,” he quipped.

In the Hamptons, pickleball games paired with après social activities are invitations that active residents sincerely appreciate. East Hampton homeowner Jen Shufro, along with her husband Greg, recently converted their tennis court into two pickleball courts. “Last year, after a skiing accident, I had no backhand for tennis, so I decided to take up pickleball and started inviting friends over to play,” Shufro recalled. “Now, we have so much demand to join our games that it’s become a huge social event for us.”

Stories such as this are becoming more common in the luxury realm, which helps explain pickleball’s unprecedented growth. In 2023, there were an estimated 48.3 million pickleball players in the United States, according to the Association of Pickleball Professionals. The Sports & Fitness Industry Association reports that participation in pickleball has increased by an average of 223.5% over the last three years.

For the Shufros, they’re making the most of their at-home court with women’s games on Mondays and Wednesdays, and weekly after-work men’s games followed by a friendly dinner. Sundays also bring couples together for pickleball and socializing. “When it was a tennis court, it was hard to get people over to play,” Shufro claimed, noting the prominent change after converting the courts. Over the last 18 months, Emmett Laffey at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Laffey International Realty, who markets luxury properties from Manhattan across Long Island’s North Shore to the Hamptons, has noticed more and more luxury clients building pickleball courts in place of tennis.

The sport is also gaining traction with a younger demographic; the Shufro’s two sons, both in their early 20s, also utilize the home courts with friends.

John and Montyne Connolly, Real Estate Agents with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Nevada Properties in Las Vegas, are avid pickleball enthusiasts. In addition to selling Las Vegas properties with pickleball as an amenity, the couple are IPTPA-certified as pickleball instructors, level one. “What we’re seeing in most of the Las Vegas luxury home market are clubhouses converting their tennis courts into pickleball courts,” noted John. Montyne agreed, “Homeowners with private courts are resurfacing them to play both tennis and pickleball, while buyers are looking for courts nearby or in private community courts within their subdivisions.”

Del Webb at Lake Las Vegas is also paying attention to the burgeoning sport. This active adult community, offering resort-style living and amenities, includes pickleball courts, a 10,000-square-foot clubhouse, fitness center, bocce, outdoor resort and lap pools, spa, and walking trails—not a tennis court in sight.

Considering that four pickleball courts can fit on one regulation tennis court, the logistical side of the investment makes sense. Today, one former tennis court can accommodate up to 16 people playing doubles in a pickleball game. Talk about expanding your social group. New luxury communities in Las Vegas are adding pickleball over tennis courts to supply residents with an in-demand amenity and also battle space restrictions.

Seymour Rifkind, Founder and President of the World Pickleball Federation (WPF) and the International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association (IPTPA), knows firsthand the sport’s growing popularity. “I travel extensively throughout the U.S. and the world, and I can corroborate that many of the most exclusive country clubs are adding pickleball courts.”

Heading to Massachusetts, Paul Grover, Co-Founder and Principal Broker of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Robert Paul Properties, reported that the sport is thriving. “Cape Cod has certainly felt the pickleball craze over the last few years. I have several clients who have added private courts to their properties.” Pickleball continues to attract luxury homebuyers. “This is most noticeable at resort communities and country clubs across Cape Cod, where pickleball courts have quickly become an expected amenity that helps draw homebuyers looking to embrace an active, outdoor lifestyle,” Grover said.

The Lakes Country Club in Palm Desert, California (about 12 miles east of Palm Springs), has an active pickleball program. When The Lakes undertook a major remodel, including its Racquet Center, they reduced three of the 15 tennis courts, replacing them with nine pickleball courts. “I see pickleball growing every year in every way,” said Donny Felich, Director of Racquet Sports at The Lakes Country Club. “We’re also seeing a younger demographic taking a liking to the game.” Play at The Lakes involves daily games, tournaments, and numerous social events.

The trend is also making an appearance in the high-end residential market in Atlanta, according to Ta’Tisha Gibbs, Vice President of Marketing, Luxury Collection, for Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties. “In the metro Atlanta area, the luxury home market is embracing the popularity of pickleball. Many high-end properties are incorporating pickleball courts as a desirable amenity,” said Gibbs. “This trend is driven by the growing interest in the sport among affluent buyers, who view it as a fun and social activity that complements their lifestyle,” she added, providing insight into the mindset of affluent Atlanta buyers.

In Naples, Florida, Amy Potter, Sales Associate at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Florida Realty, reported, “Pickleball courts are in high demand. Communities are converting courts and lighting them so people can play late into the evening.”

In 2025, Naples will host the Minto U.S. Open Pickleball Championships. Last year, over 3,250 people competed in this international tournament, ranging in age from eight to 88. A strong turnout is expected—according to Pickleball Communities Florida, Naples has 35 luxury communities boasting courts to accommodate the growing interest.

The economics of pickleball make good sense. Ned Kaplan, Owner of Court Order, Inc., has 39 years of experience in tennis court construction and maintenance, as well as basketball, bocce, and pickleball courts around the Hamptons and across Long Island’s Nassau County. “In the last two to three years, I’ve been doing more tennis court to pickleball conversions,” he said. “I’ve done about 25 this year, so far.” According to Kaplan, building a new pickleball court costs around $35,000, which is about one-third less than the cost of constructing a tennis court.

Pickleball’s popularity is evident and other fitness organizations are recognizing the importance of the physical aspects of the game. Club Pilates, with a network of over 600 studios nationwide, hosted a summer (indoor) “50-minute Pilates for Pickleball Workshop” in Palm Springs. The purpose was to improve your alignment, balance, stability, and rotation of the spine—all essential for your pickleball practice, according to Club Pilates.

Celebrities have also taken a liking to the now-famed sport. Actor Vince Vaughn recently became the new majority owner of the Palm Springs-based Coachella Valley Scorpions, a 50-and-over pro pickleball team. Coachella Valley is home to one of 12 teams in the National Pickleball League and pickleball courts are found throughout the area.

Technology not only makes hotel guests more comfortable but also allows greater control when customizing their experiences.

Many advances currently being promoted by residential developers—smart home technologies that control locks, lighting, and entertainment from the touch of a cell phone— are being more rapidly adopted by hotels. A suite of technologies, from using artificial intelligence (AI) to predict guest preferences to deploying super-fast Wi-Fi 6, are becoming standard in the hospitality industry. A poll commissioned by Mews, a leading hospitality technology platform, reveals that increasing numbers of travelers favor advances like keyless entry and in-room smart tablets. From the tablet, a guest can schedule room service, spa treatments, or show tickets and, in theory, one day be alerted to when a seat at a particular blackjack table becomes available. Experts are also embracing whimsical shapes and playful designs this year. Round rugs are making a big comeback, breaking away from the traditional rectangular format. These circular designs bring a sense of movement and softness to a room, making them perfect for adding a unique touch to living rooms, bedrooms, and even dining areas.

Fasciani shared her insights on how texture and shape are defining luxury rugs at STARK. “We’re seeing growth in the types of materials being used, such as metal threads combined with silk, creating a striking visual and tactile contrast.” The introduction of metal is unexpected in rugs and certainly turns heads. “Our Missoni Deep Stripe and STARK Kamaria rugs exemplify this trend, pairing metallic elements with soft textures for a luxurious yet playful effect,” added Fasciani.

Filipa Mendonça, a Product Designer at Caffe Latte Home, spoke to what the industry has seen over the past year. “We saw a blend of comfort, innovation, and sustainability in rug trends,” she said. “This year, the focus on sustainability has deepened, with a surge in the use of organic fibers like jute, bamboo silk, and organic cotton.” These natural materials not only contribute to an eco-friendly home, but also bring a warm, grounded feel to any space.

The color palettes of these rugs mirror their natural origins. Expect to see an array of browns, beiges, and grays dominating the scene, offering a versatile foundation for any room. However, this year’s collections are far from monotonous. Mendonça believes jewel tones like deep blues, emerald greens, and rich burgundies are being used as vibrant accents, creating a dynamic contrast that is both luxurious and inviting. Rachel Fasciani, Brand Marketing Specialist at STARK, agrees, adding, “We’re seeing a strong preference for warm beiges, soft grays, and earthy tones, punctuated by bold colors like deep indigo and terracotta.”

While innovation drives much of the design industry, there is also a resurgence of classic patterns, albeit with a modern twist. Traditional motifs are being reimagined in contemporary color schemes, merging the old with the new. STARK’s Antique Reimagined collection is a prime example, offering timeless designs, such as vintage Persian and Moroccan elements in updated hues that feel fresh yet familiar.

The concept is also apparent in the Eichholtz Evans Rug offered by Sweetpea & Willows. Traditional colors such as black and beige are perfectly paired with geometric shapes. Yet the piece has an overall modern feel with plush textures and clean lines.

Customization and Personalization

In an era where individuality reigns supreme, the demand for bespoke rugs is at an all-time high. Both Caffe Latte and STARK representatives call attention to the importance of personalization in upcoming collections. “Consumers are increasingly seeking unique pieces that reflect their style and preferences,” said Mendonça. STARK echoes this sentiment, noting that their bespoke offerings allow clients to create truly one-of-a-kind pieces that are both beautiful and meaningful.
