Quite often, accolades such as “ultimate beachfront” or “piece of paradise” are simply marketing hyperbole, but when applied to this extraordinary Miami property, the largest oceanfront estate in the area, they are entirely accurate. Water frontage in Miami might appear plentiful, but direct frontage on the ocean, particularly for singlefamily homes, is a rare commodity. “When you take into account hotels and condo buildings, there are just very, very, very few oceanfront homes,” says Danny Hertzberg with The Jills Zeder Group, Coldwell Banker Realty. “Most on the water are located on a bay or a canal, rather than being on the beach, while this property, 355 Ocean Boulevard is the largest estate on the ocean with 250 feet of prime sandy beach in the city. Good properties might have 100 feet on the water and great properties maybe 200 feet, but 250 feet is unheard of. Donna Chang, for example, is just one block from the river and serves refined, modern Chinese cuisine. “The menu sees ancient Cantonese cuisine and Sichuan flavors executed with modern techniques, resulting in a feast that makes for an ultra-modern fine dining experience,” adds the owner, Nehme Ghanem. whose very mention stirs a spiritual reaction among devotees of the game. Those hallowed grounds, where legends were born and champions crowned, are among the nearly 40,000 golf courses worldwide, and the subjective determination of which ones are the most historic, challenging or beautiful keeps journalists and commentators perennially busy. Veteran journalist John Scott Lewinski — his work appears in Golf magazine, Travel + Leisure and Robb Report — covers golf equipment and destinations, providing him opportunities to play around the world. The avid, low-handicap golfer suggests several criteria contribute to world-class status. “Qualities that make for a great course include history, exceptional design and beautiful aesthetics,” says Lewinski. “Some have all three and those are the best of the best,” he adds, citing Augusta National and Pebble Beach as examples. 10 | Homes & Estates

Among truly passionate golfers, the sport is practically a religion, and like all religions, it takes its mythology very seriously. Therefore, some courses are revered because of their place in the history of golf. The most obvious destination for golfers seeking to immerse themselves in tradition is the Old Course at St. Andrews (aka the “Grand Old Lady”), which dates to the 15th century and has hosted 30 British Open championships. While conceding St. Andrews’ palpable aura of tradition, Lewinski suggests Gullane Golf Club as an alternative historic Scottish experience. St. Andrews is open to the public, but that does not mean you can simply show up. And while securing a tee time involves cutting through some red tape, many consider it well worth the effort. Honoring the revered site, regarded as the home of golf, legend Bobby Jones stated, “I could take out of my life everything except my experiences at St. Andrews, and I would still have had a rich and full life.” De g r e e o f Di f f i c u lt y

Golf courses that test the limits of PGA professionals are sought out by mere mortals anxious to experience the most difficult links on the planet. Courses regularly ranked as the most challenging in America include Pebble Beach, Augusta National and Bethpage Black Course on Long Island. No ocean bluffs are found in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but its Southern Hills Country Club has been the site of eight major PGA tournaments, including three U.S. Opens. Attracting several PGA Championships and a Ryder Cup is the Straits Course at Whistling Straits, part of the Kohler Co.’s fivestar resort in Wisconsin. Hugging the shores of Lake Michigan, the course is as challenging as it is breathtaking, punctuated by nearly a thousand bunkers. Michael O’Reilly, director of golf operations at Destination Kohler, reports, “If playing the fairways and greens that professional golf legends and major champions have competed on is appealing, then Whistling Straits should be at the top of your bucket list!” The pro advises, “Straits is both beauty and beast with its rugged and windswept terrain sculpted by Hall of Fame designer Pete Dye along two miles of the Lake Michigan shoreline that provides an unforgettable golf experience.” Gleneagles, a historic luxury resort at the foot of the Scottish Highlands, features not one but three championship courses and has hosted both the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup. Emphasizing that the property appeals to all the senses, director of golf Andrew Jowett states, “Gleneagles is a unique destination, boasting not ColdwellBankerLuxury.com | 11


only championship golf courses, but also a world-class hotel offering inimitable opportunities for exploration and indulgence.” The longest course in the world is China’s Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf Club, with the Himalayas as a backdrop. And while a golf ball travels further at higher elevations, this course’s 8,500-plus yards — it includes a monster par-five in excess of 700 yards — can be grueling, especially at 10,000 feet above sea level. Golf course design is not about natural preservation, but rather carving new forms of art from the existing environment, and the best courses make an already spectacular setting even more dramatic. “Designers need to work with what they have and know how to use the natural environment,” states golf writer Lewinski. The course best known for showcasing nature while challenging its players is the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Links, a mecca for serious golfers. With high-end resort amenities complementing the course’s natural beauty and challenging design, Pebble Beach Company CEO David Stivers suggests, “What makes the experience truly come 12 | Homes & Estates

to life is our dedicated team who strive to provide a once-in-alifetime experience, every time.” Jack Nicklaus, who won both the U.S. Amateur Championship and U.S. Open at the storied course, stated, “If I had only one more round to play, I would choose to play it at Pebble Beach.” At Lofoten Links in Norway, a rugged terrain is illuminated by periods of 24-hour daylight or glimpses of the Northern Lights. At the other end of the spectrum is The Links at Fancourt, in South Africa, a place of mystical beauty designed by native son Gary Player. Lewinski recommends Engadine in St. Moritz, Switzerland, a village in the Alps usually thought of for its world-class skiing; and Nevada’s Wolf Creek Golf Club for its otherworldly canyonriddled landscape. In Canada’s breathtaking Rocky Mountains, within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are a pair of championship golf courses at the château-style Fairmont Banff Springs resort and elegantly rustic Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. Tahlon Sweenie, director of golf at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, reports, “What sets this course apart is its combination of scenic beauty and course design, championship history, resort amenities, and the opportunity to see wildlife freely roaming the course throughout your round.” He adds, “Truly one of a kind, Jasper is a course you must experience firsthand to fully appreciate the masterpiece Stanley Thompson designed nearly a century ago.” Built on lava outcroppings is the Manele Golf Course at the Four Seasons resort on the Hawaiian island of Lanai, a Jack Nicklaus-designed layout offering ocean views from every hole, the par-three 12th being particularly memorable. Golf writer Lewinski cites the Plantation Course on Maui and the Robert

Trent Jones-designed Princeville Makai Golf Club on Kauai as other exceptional Hawaiian experiences. “These are gorgeous places to be, not just to play golf,” he contends. The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, a Relais & Châteaux resort in New Zealand, offers dramatic cliff’s-edge golf, while Bear Mountain in British Columbia is another of Nicklaus’ masterpieces. Lewinski considers the Golden Bear a preeminent golf course designer, among the ranks of masters Robert Trent Jones and Pete Dye. “He understands how to make a golf course an event,” explains the writer, who reports his personal favorite course is probably the Nicklausdesigned Quivira Golf Club at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, where the desert meets the sea. Many of the world’s finest courses are exclusive, and scoring a tee time at the most elite can be a lifelong pursuit. Seminole Golf Club in South Florida is among the most expensive and selective in the world, reputedly even denying membership to Jack Nicklaus. The Grove XXIII, the Florida club spearheaded by NBA icon Michael Jordan, maintains an exclusive roster of reportedly less than 100 members, dominated by superstar athletes. The course is also incredibly demanding, with PGA pro Rickie Fowler once referring to it as “Slaughterhouse 23.” Refreshingly, some extraordinary courses — Pebble Beach, Bandon Dunes in Oregon and Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina among them — are open to the public, thereby making exclusive environments accessible to anybody with a genuine passion for the game. glass skyscrapers, art museums and luxury hotels that comprise portfolios of celebrity architects, most major engineering projects are generally dismissed as drab, uninspired necessities for the movement of people and products. But a graceful fusion of engineering and elevated aesthetics is revolutionizing the world’s infrastructure, resulting in projects that defy gravity while exhibiting unparalleled artistry. The Millau Viaduct, traversing the river Tarn in the south of France, represents one of the most stunning pieces of infrastructure in the world, an engineering project executed with a sense of minimalist elegance. France’s high-speed rail system is comfortable and efficient, but some travelers prefer a leisurely drive from Paris to Montpellier so they can cross this modern landmark, ideally in a convertible sports car. Celebrated British architect Norman Foster collaborated with prominent structural engineer Michel Virlogeux on the seven-mast, cable-stayed bridge. It is remarkably ethereal and unobtrusive, presenting a bold, dramatic statement without overwhelming the natural environment with which it delicately coexists. “We were attracted by the elegance and logic of a structure that would march across the heroic landscape, and, in the most minimal way, connect one plateau to the other,” stated Foster of the design philosophy. of style — van Berkel states, “We always strive for integral design solutions from the outset of our design process.” The Doha stations designed by UNStudio were inspired by traditional Qatari architecture yet expressed through a modernist lens, an approach well-suited to an ultramodern metropolis with an ancient heritage. “This element of attraction was particularly essential in this project, as the metro system is completely new to Doha, where most people travel by car,” explains van Berkel. Airports can be gray and uninviting when their designs are driven solely by functionality, but architect Eero Saarinen introduced highly inventive aesthetics with his iconic TWA terminal at New York’s JFK International Airport in 1962. Among the more exciting contemporary environments is Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport in China, designed by Rome-based Studio Fuksas, further demonstrating how artistic a massive transportation project can be without sacrificing efficiency. Honoring a rich tradition that began with the earliest train stations in Europe, modern-day rail hubs can be visually exciting as well. Fueled by investments in high-speed rail, some extraordinary new stations are being created by world-class contemporary designers. In the ancient city of Naples, Italy, pioneering architect Zaha Hadid authored a futuristic approach to the Napoli-Afragola railway station, accommodating new high-speed trains to Rome with connections throughout Europe. Equal parts engineering marvel and artistic expression, the station’s design is evocative of a moving train, and its interior is flooded with light through innovative engineering. Celebrating its state-of-the-art design, then-prime minister Paolo Gentiloni used the station’s debut as a metaphor for his nation’s

never conflicts between satisfying structural demands and aesthetic aspirations, Foster suggests the Millau Viaduct illustrates how effective collaborations between architects and engineers can result in structures of breathtaking beauty. Bridges, which for centuries incorporated both art and engineering, are a natural reflection of the trend toward aesthetically elevated infrastructure. But with a strong in-house team of structural and environmental engineering professionals, Foster + Partners has applied its design skills to a diverse portfolio of infrastructure projects, including Kuwait International Airport, Bilbao Metro and Dresden’s Central Station. Transit facilities have long created opportunities for artistic expression, with historic subway stations in Paris, Moscow and Prague boasting some of the most impressive underground spaces on the planet. The Arts et Métiers metro station in Paris, originally built in 1904, was reimagined 90 years later to celebrate the bicentennial of the nearby Museum of Arts & Crafts. Inspired by the science fiction of Jules Verne, Belgian artist François Schuiten transformed the station into a funky copper-clad space evocative of a vintage submarine hull. “If we’re to encourage people to use public transport, I firmly believe that it should have visual appeal,” says Ben van Berkel, founder and principal of Amsterdam-based UNStudio, which conceptualized the stations for the advanced, driverless metro system in Doha, Qatar. “It should not simply provide a convenient travel experience, it should be attractive and appeal to all the aesthetic senses,” says the architect, who insists, “It should be a celebration of travel.” For all UNStudio’s infrastructure projects — the cutting-edge firm also designs bridges and tunnels with an unexpected degree

acceleration into the 21st century. “With this inauguration, we send a message that Italy is moving, the country is growing,” he proclaimed, adding, “Here is a wonderful combination of artistic and engineering expertise.” Bridges reserved for pedestrians and cyclists are still rare in the U.S., but in Europe, Asia and Latin America those projects have created opportunities for engineers and architects to be particularly expressive. The Zubizuri footbridge (aka Campo Volantín) in Bilbao, Spain was a project of renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, who was trained as a structural engineer. With slanted, curvilinear cables rising above a glass-decked walkway, the bridge reimagines a stroll over the river Nervión, and Calatrava’s striking Puente de la Mujer creates an equally dramatic effect in Buenos Aires. Addressing his large portfolio of public works projects in an interview, before he was a household name in the U.S., Calatrava presented his philosophy on infrastructure design. “People are grateful for these projects, not only for having the structures for functional purposes, but because they are done with beauty and dignity,” he said. Applying this approach to his specialty of bridge design, Calatrava explained, “A bridge is born of necessity, but it must establish its own identity. A modern bridge can also be a work of art.” Zaha Hadid Architects created a series of wave-like sculpted forms for Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Bridge, and the 2,600-foot Nescio Bridge, gracefully traversing one of Amsterdam’s canals, accommodates pedestrians and cyclists on ribbons of steel suspended by cables. Establishing the tradition of pedestrian bridge design in America while employing the stainless-steel sheathing that has become his iconic signature, architect Frank Gehry conceived the BP Pedestrian Bridge in Chicago. Elevating what could have been a prosaic necessity, the bridge sensually spans a busy thoroughfare to connect two parks with a genuine elegance of style. Eleanor Gorski, CEO and president of the Chicago Architecture Center, suggests, “The BP Pedestrian Bridge set the standard for a new way of thinking about how bike and pedestrian paths can be all at once beautiful, functional and innovative.” Noting the bridge has already been an inspiration for subsequent projects throughout Chicago, she adds, “Its unexpected design challenges norms for these pieces of infrastructure.” Beyond glamorous bridges, public works projects typically unaccustomed to the limelight occasionally demonstrate an elegant harmony of engineering and aesthetics. The Veluwemeer Aqueduct is a “water bridge” allowing vessels to sail over a highway in the Netherlands while vehicular traffic is channeled through a short tunnel beneath the sea. With its clean, graceful contours, this unique project is an example of how essential infrastructure can be beautified. Even a waste treatment plant outside Barcelona reflects an unexpectedly sophisticated design by Batlle & Roig architects, one that might even be mistaken for a tech firm’s corporate headquarters. Fresh aesthetics can also be added to existing infrastructure, transforming engineering projects into fine art, even if for a limited time. In Gothenburg, Sweden, artist Christo Guelov applied a vibrant Lego-inspired design to the towering concrete pylons of the otherwise forgettable Älvsborg Bridge. On a smaller scale, many U.S. cities, from Pompano Beach, Florida to Pasadena, California, have commissioned local artists to wrap electric transformer boxes with culturally relevant art or paint crosswalks to bring new life to gray, utilitarian facilities.

The answer is Amangiri, a luxury lodge in Canyon Point, Utah, that is part of the high-end, boutique hotel company, Aman. The brand’s fabulous hotels are on the bucket list of almost every traveler. “Aman comes from the Sanskrit-derived word for peace and has been fortunate to enjoy an organic evolution for over three decades, to now be recognized as one of the world’s most intuitive resort, hotel, and residence brands,” says the chairman and CEO Vlad Doronin. For example, Amangiri is spread over 900 vast acres of red rock country in the sublime Colorado Plateau. Most notable for Ehlers were the moments spent with her fiancé on their personal daybed, where delicious fresh foods were delivered and there was optimum space to relax. But, today, landscapes surrounding upscale homes and estates are apt to appear more relaxed, synced to the surrounding terrain and seemingly spontaneous. Compared to the classics, they are no less premeditated and well orchestrated, helmed by a growing cadre of design professionals devoted to everything outside. Along with residential properties and estates, college campuses, urban parks, public gardens, green roofs, bioremediation, and conservation all fall under the purview of landscape architects and designers. extending beyond greenery and flowers to include swimming pools, water features, pool houses, art studios, writing sheds, sculpture and outdoor art, stables, tennis and pickleball courts, gazebos, trails, walking paths and forested land. For example, one incentive for a large residential project in Ohio recognized by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) in 2023 was a sculpture collection. Here outdoor art gets as much attention as flora and fauna. “My goal is always to try and bring the landscape and the home into a supporting role. So that the landscape looks like it has been there forever and flows with the home’s architecture,” says Julianna Roosevelt, a landscape designer at Environ Architecture in Long Beach. “Even if it’s a contemporary home, the landscape has to look as if it was designed exactly for that home. And it’s always been there.” NOT JUST GRASS AND GREENERY As much as landscape design seems like a plant business, it’s also a relationship business. Architects and designers juggle essential connections with residential architects, civil engineers, local governments, business managers and more. Equally important is the connection with the land. Also honored by ASLA was a modernist interpretation of mountain

living set on a promontory in Big Sky overlooking Montana’s Madison Range on land shaped by wind, fire, water and ice. The goal was to protect vistas, night skies and wildlife while connecting inhabitants to the story of the place. Nothing shapes an outcome more than the owner. “Generally speaking, it’s the relationship you build with the clients that enables you to really give them the landscape that they desire,” says Roosevelt. Even with existing gardens, new owners want to put their own fingerprint on the scheme. The first step for a designer is to assess what’s currently in place. Sometimes existing material can be used. GETTING CLIENTS ORIENTED The client relationship is often a process of educating and exposing them to how the outside influences their everyday life. “I spend a lot of time with them walking around the existing landscape,” shares Roosevelt, who also spends time indoors, looking out the windows. She says she wants to evaluate what they’re going to see, including what the drive in looks like, what the approach to the front door looks like, et cetera. And she pays attention to what you would see of the landscape from each room of the house. “It’s important to get a sense of the owner’s style.” If you look at top garden magazines in the U.S., Europe

and South America, Roosevelt says they all mention the importance of the individual and understanding the personality of the garden. For the designer, she says, that relationship requires a serious knowledge of plant material since “each home has its own microclimate.” As climates change and evolve, the ability to address new amounts of rainfall, sunshine and heat is expected to become more critical. Not only must a designer be well versed in the native plants of a particular area, but knowledge of the history of gardens is equally essential. Like many landscape designers and architects, Roosevelt visits top gardens worldwide. “I have also grown up with some extraordinary gardens and women who were seriously active in garden societies,” she adds. Requests for ornate fountains are not as frequent as a few years ago. Formal displays, such as these, are usually paired with a specific property type, such as a French Chateau. For designers and owners, it entails a search for period antiques, fountains, large cement pots and items of that nature. Seasonal showcases, often numbering in the hundreds or thousands of blooms and bulbs, are still requested, as are singular demonstrations, such as a succession of spring blossoms or native species along paths and walkways leading into wooded areas. SPECIAL REQUESTS Owners today have diverse interests, which also shape expectations. They may have children and pets or want to create equestrian spaces. And it’s the landscape architect’s job to bring these interests to fruition while still respecting the land. One change over the last decade is a growing interest in specialty gardens. Meditation spaces, serenity gardens, and white gardens are all on wish lists today, along with orchards, vegetable gardens and chickens. Even those who don’t cook still desire kitchen gardens just to showcase what has been grown on the property. Also on the rise, according to Roosevelt, are requests for personal vineyards. “If you have a great sunny spot, maybe on a hill, that could be a great spot to do a personal vineyard,” she says.
