The Legacy

The Erice Group of Keller Williams Realty

is sponsoring Manolo Valdés’ largest sculpture exhibit to date.

Scattered around the city of Doral, Florida, and the Doral Contemporary Art Museum (DORCAM), you may catch more than a glimpse of the work of Manolo Valdés, even from a distance. Great and grand, his sculptures seem to emerge from the city and invite onlookers to enjoy art in a fun, exciting, and safe way this year in The Legacy exhibit.

“The pieces currently in the show are the end product of many years of work. Some are even 10 to 12 years old,” says Valdés. The Spanish artist, born in 1942, was interested in art at an early age and describes how a series can develop over time from one starting point. “For example, there’s a whole series of butterfly sculptures that began when I was in Central Park one day. I saw a swarm of butterflies around a group of people’s heads like a crown. After that, I saw butterflies everywhere and that passage of time cemented the image for me.”

Through a partnership with the City of Doral, the breathtaking sculptures have found a temporary home in several public parks in Doral, including Doral Central Park, Downtown Doral Park, and several other locations. The DORCAM exhibition, The Legacy, will be the largest show of Valdés’ work to date.

“The sculptures look as if they belong to

Manolo Valdés has pushed the limits of sculpture in size and material, but the artist is always working and thinking of the next project, hoping to go bigger and better each time.

the landscape,” says Flor Mayoral, vice-chair of DORCAM, who has a passion for art and has been working with sponsors of the exhibit, Linda Erice and The Erice Group of Keller Williams Realty. “My husband, Louis Erice, is the operating principal of two market centers in Miami and has a real estate practice. My partner, Michelle Kauffmann, and I are the directors of the luxury division. Since luxury real estate goes together with design and art, we like to partner with other luxury specialists like interior designers and artists with similar interests,” says Erice. “We thought this was a great opportunity to bring beautiful art and properties together.” Although this is their first time working with Valdés, Erice and Mayoral both wanted to find a way for guests to enjoy art and luxury in an educational and safe way.

Eighteen sculptures will be showcased in the exhibit and those range from two thousand pounds to two to three tons. The massive size of the sculptures is a part of Valdes’ individual style.

“My style, I would say, is figurative,” the artist explains. “I like to begin with an image that already exists in art history and make it my own, with my own commentary.” Most of Valdés’ projects begin with choosing an image and then selecting a detail to focus on. “Once I have an image in my head, I try to think about all of the things that have happened in art since that image, all of the movements and interpret that with my own materials.” Changing the size comes from the Pop Art Movement, which taught artists that they could amplify things and still make them beautiful. Changing profiles stemmed from

8

the Abstract Movement. “The viewer doesn’t necessarily have to know all of this history, this is just part of my style and my process,” says Valdés, noting that this has become a recognizable part of his work.

Part of what makes DORCAM stand out is that the museum always strives for variety and inclusion. “We work with all types of art and media, from engineering to photography. When we do an exhibit, we work hard to include many types of media and local artists and get people involved,” says Mayoral.

The museum has multiple events planned in tandem with the exhibit to round out The Legacy experience. “These events are the perfect way to bring art and culture to the city in a way that is safe for everyone,” says Erice. “The Manolo mansion is an event that will take place at the artist’s home. Guests will be able to walk through the gorgeous, open property and enjoy the art,” says Erice. “You feel like you’re in a dream when you are walking around the property. The sculptures are so large, it’s magical.”

The monumental scale of the sculptures begs the question, how do you transport such works of art? But the challenges that come with sculptures this large, such as calculations, the weight, or engineering the equilibrium, are not ones that Valdés fixates on during his early process. “The way I think of things is not to think about the logistics first, but to work the other way around,” he says. “I look at it like there is always an engineer or an architect who has done something harder, so there is always a solution.”

The concept of butterflies swarming around like a crown came from a very specific moment for the artist. Over the years, the image cemented in his mind and has appeared in several pieces of work. PHOTOS COURTESY OF MANOLO VALDÉS;

The Show(ings) Must

From virtual open houses to supplying clients with masks and hand sanitizer, Keller Williams Realty agents found new ways to safely and successfully serve their clients through the COVID-19 pandemic.

While most states issued strict stay-at-home orders around April 2020, real estate agents were considered essential workers in many locations.

“Texas is one of the states where Realtors are considered essential workers,” according to Chad Andrus, land specialist and partner with Mock Ranches in Houston, Texas. “We never slowed up when the rest of the state went on lockdown.”

Andrus utilized virtual and video showings through MLS and the KW Consumer App to continue to serve clients. “I had been using Zoom meetings long before

the pandemic hit, which made for an easier transition,” he says. “The vast majority of our buyer appointments are now taking place through Zoom.”

Meanwhile in Colorado, a strict executive stay-at-home order was issued on April 7, 2020. “Real estate professionals and real estate-associated activities were considered non-essential,” according to Christine Battista of Keller Williams Realty DTC in Centennial, Colorado. “The order was very restrictive and all showing completely stopped, even of vacant land.”

Later that month, inspections and walkthrough’s were deemed essential in Colorado, although in-person showings were not yet permitted. During this time, Christine and Carl Battista listed and sold many homes sightunseen in Breckenridge, Keystone, and the

greater Denver area.

“The showings were either videos we recorded ahead of time or virtual walkthroughs of the homes,” Battista explains. “Surprisingly, the month of the complete lockdown — which meant no in-person showings — we had the best month since the beginning of 2020.”

In order to sell properties during the height of the pandemic, real estate agents relied on virtual staging to showcase listings to potential buyers. Rather than having photographers visit a seller’s home, the Battista Team instead “tutored” the seller on taking photos and videos that would best sell the property.

“Virtual staging has never been more important,” Battista says. “We advised the

Go On

owners to declutter to a very high degree and we then paid to have the photos retouched and the videos edited.”

In some areas across the United States, the pandemic did not slow down the real estate industry — in fact, it did the opposite.

“Since COVID, the market has been the hottest in our history,” says Battista. “We have never seen anything like it — from the appraisal gaps to the number of showings, offers, and ridiculous amounts over asking price — in all price ranges, including luxury. The demand continues to out-strip the demand by an unprecedented amount.”

Even above asking price, properties were flying off the market in Colorado. Due to the nationwide stay-at-home order, the pandemic quickly changed how homeowners were using

and living in their space. This shift in lifestyle has had a lasting impact on what buyers are looking for in new property.

Straying away from city living in apartments and smaller houses, clients now gravitate more toward large properties, often with backyards, home offices, and multiple living areas. With the increase of at-home workouts, clients are also looking for houses that offer potential for home gyms.

Battista has seen more clients looking for single-family dwellings as opposed to an attached dwelling. “Clients want residences that offer more space and privacy, most often away from the city center,” she says.

“From what we’ve seen, buyers are looking for homes with plenty of space,” adds Andrus. “The buyer wants enough space that they can

roam around their property and also be able to be completely self-sufficient.”

More than before, clients are also looking for vacation and second homes.

“The demand for a mountain getaway in Colorado is unprecedented,” says Andrus. “The prices are escalating so fast in both our resort towns and metropolitan Denver, that it seems almost unsustainable.”

Andrus deals with large acreage tracts throughout Texas. “I see the trend of those looking to purchase weekend getaways in the country continuing as long as interest rates remain at historic lows and the threat of another lockdown a real possibility,” he says. “Our land inventory is extremely low as prices continue to rise as much as 20 percent from this time last year.”

‘Stay Zen’

Ithas been an unfathomable year of navigating life amid COVID-19. In 2020, the North American housing market took an equally unfathomable ride – from brief stagnation to all-out explosion in less than a year. Fueled by low interest rates, the work-fromhome paradigm shift and the desire for outdoor space, agents throughout the U.S. and Canada alike agree: It’s all hands on deck through 2021.

Just ask Jordan Stuart, agent at Keller Williams Capital Properties and Founder & CEO of Next Move. In Washington, D.C., he watched a sluggish market in March become “a Wild West” where all traditions went out the window.

“I haven’t run into a property in the past three months [with] an appraisal contingency in the offer. It’s whatever someone feels like paying,” he says. “If you told me that two years ago, I would have thought that was crazy.”

For Stuart’s clients, there’s a common thread: a huge majority are working professionals with extra money and no home office in the city.

“Work from home mentality had to shift, and these people haven’t traveled since March — so now they have more money,” he adds. “Now people want to know where can [they] get a third bedroom and outdoor space.” Buyers are searching

further and further from the nation’s capital, to suburbs of Manassas, VA, where Stuart reports one $600,000 home received 32 offers.

A few hours north in New Hampshire, the story is similar, according to Adam Dow of

Keller Williams Lakes & Mountains Realty, who specializes in large and spacious properties, as well as condos in the resort town of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. While the country was locking down, Dow and his team were busy with buyers who sought wide-open spaces and could leverage the ability to work from anywhere.

“We don’t have all of that location demand,” he explains. “People are able to sell their urban place and get more for their money. And it’s certainly a spot where people can have more room, more outdoor space.”

Agent Mark Benson of Keller Williams Realty Naples, who has spent the past 26 years in the region, recalls hunkering down in the spring and preparing for “a significant downturn.” He, too, was completely caught off guard by the “pent up demand.”

“Our market came roaring back, with buyers deciding they would rather be sitting by a pool in Southwest Florida than stuck indoors. So as [summer] ramped up, it was a pivot to see how I could meet the demands of our new market,” he says.

For Irene Kaushansky, broker with Torontobased Keller Williams Portfolio Realty, what looked like a promising spring market came to an abrupt halt on March 16, when the province entered a stay-at-home order. But after a twoweek-wait, Irene sensed that perhaps business could continue – as long as all parties felt good about it, she says.

“We [were] having conversations with our clients to see who was worried, who wasn’t,” she recalls. When she listed a home in Toronto a few weeks later, “we had 40 private showings,” she says, “which at the time was staggering. We were fortunate that we were deemed essential and allowed to work, and we were very grateful. Everyone was so shocked that in the middle of this completely new thing there was so much activity.”

To combat the increased activity and hyper competitive market, Stuart advises his buyers to “Stay Zen,” as it can help them weather the strange new times of lining up for open houses while staying six feet apart. Stuart marvels at his buyers’ upbeat attitude in this pivot. Joking about being “only” one of 15 offers or being one of several parties performing inspections before making an offer are commonplace.

With more clients buying homes sight unseen, the role of the agent has become increasingly critical, Dow says. He’s leaned heavily into providing 3-D imagery of every room in the home — even the less desirable rooms — to make

properties accessible virtually.

“I was never a fan of the 360-degree tour, but I wanted people to want more, to see more — the neighborhood, the lifestyle. We provide a 3-D tour of the pretty parts, but also in the scary basement and garage,” he says.

Benson adds: “Many of the tools that were relevant prior to COVID — videos, virtual tours and staging — continued to play an important role.” As people became limited in travel, virtual showings increased, he says. Still, he has learned to look “beyond the nuts and bolts and the technology.”

“It’s the personal touches which help to distinguish each of us from the competition,” he says.

Kaushansky agrees; ever since March of 2020, her team’s top priority has been to take care of and help as many clients as possible.

“We’re still very humble and cautious — anything could change at a moment’s notice. But our systems have improved, our service has

improved, and we came together stronger as a team,” she says.

Sellers wanting to downsize have an absolute advantage in Toronto’s market, Kaushansky adds. If they don’t want to leave the big city, now might be the time to consider a condo — or renting.

“You’re selling high and buying comfortably. We don’t know how long that’s going to go. And if sellers consider renting, our rental prices have absolutely shattered,” she says.

And while a decrease in inventory means a smaller pie, now’s not the time to get comfortable, Stuart says. He remains optimistic for 2021, not just for his market, but for the opportunity to improve as an agent.

“I’m not inundated with contracts anymore; I can actually focus on building my outside relationships for future lead generation and having people have my back and vice-versa. Agents that aren’t doing that are going to be frustrated in 2021,” he

says. Prices are soaring, and homes are selling sight-unseen in Washington, D.C. This 6-bedroom, 6-bath home sold for $2.1 million in October, the highest sale ever in the 22042 ZIP code. Pravassa creates itineraries to exotic destinations like Bali that are stress-free and culturally immersive.

Well-Traveled

All vacations are escapes from the daily grind, and a rapidly growing sector of the hospitality industry combines indulgence with health and well-being.

The primary goal of leisure travel is to relax, recharge and escape the stressful influences in our lives. Vacations frequently involve partying and overindulging, but an increasing number of destinations successfully combines luxurious decadence with a healthy lifestyle. If anything, the experiences of the pandemic have only heightened interest in this hospitality industry specialty.

Pravassa is a provider of global health and wellness itineraries, crafting customized tours that are stress-free and culturally immersive. Pravassa, which means “journey” in Sanskrit, was founded by former fashion industry executive Linden Schaffer, whose book Living Well on the Road: Health and Wellness for Travelers is a valuable resource for burned-out business travelers.

“A movement of people trading things for experiences,” is how Schaffer describes one outcome of the Great Recession, an approach

to life reinforced by the pandemic. Schaffer lists five fundamental elements of well-being: breath, movement, mindfulness, nourishment, and experience. “When those are in balance, you have a much more meaningful travel experience,” she maintains.

“To one person, movement means yoga, but to another it may mean hiking,” explains Schaffer. “Whatever those things mean to an individual, we use them as the foundation for exploration,” she says, reporting that each itinerary is 100 percent customized. Schaffer insists that luxury need not be sacrificed for sustainability or culturally sensitive experiences, noting that a lovingly restored palace or villa can offer five-star amenities. Careful to support, rather than exploit, indigenous people, Schaffer states, “Through our relationships, we get invited into people’s homes, temples and sacred spaces.”

With mystical vortexes creating positive

energy, Sedona, Arizona’s red rock country draws people to meditate, heal and connect to the natural environment. At the mouth of Boynton Canyon, a sacred place for the Yavapai-Apache people, is Sedona’s Enchantment Resort and Mii Amo, a boutique destination spa on the resort grounds that is currently closed for renovation.

Mii Amo general manager Jim Root is also director of well-being at Enchantment and sister properties in Virginia and the Bahamas. Enchantment is about exploring outward, explains Root, citing 300 miles of hiking and biking trails just outside the Sedona resort’s front door, while Mii Amo accommodates visitors looking inward.

“Guests stay at Mii Amo to reconnect with a spouse or the world around them,” says Root, who adds, “They don’t come for a vacation, but for a journey, hopefully one they’ll continue back home.” During its renovation, some Mii Amo

amenities have been integrated into Enchantment, including plush spa suites for guests to whom wellness is a priority.

Root insists the recent resurgence of health and wellness resorts is hardly a fleeting trend, and prefers the less buzzy term “well-being.” Suggesting the concept is best expressed through individualized services, he states, “You don’t have to fit into our program. Our program will morph to fit you.”

Mii Amo, a place where hugs literally took the place of handshakes, reopens in the spring of 2022 to a changed world, but Root believes it will be more relevant than ever. “There will be a demand for simple pleasures, the healing power of touch, and the ability to connect with someone and with your own body,” he says.

Sensei is a Four Seasons property founded by technology pioneer Larry Ellison and renowned physician Dr. David Agus. The property offers luxurious accommodations and world-class art on 24 idyllic acres of the Hawaiian island of Lanai, which has not been overwhelmed by tourists, fast food and timeshare towers. The secluded resort’s cuisine may be healthy, but menus are designed by celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa and incorporate fresh, natural ingredients from nearby Sensei Farms.

“Sensei is committed to helping people live longer, healthier lives through preventative

care and healthy lifestyle practices,” says CEO Kevin Kelly. Options available to guests include a Guided Sensei Experience and the intensely data-driven Optimal Wellbeing Program in which a bracelet from tech firm WHOOP begins transmitting health information before guests ever leave home. Both programs are accommodated by a Sensei Guide, who might be described as a dedicated concierge with an advanced health science degree.

Lead Sensei Guide Kelly LaLonde reports that detailed consultations with guests begin immediately after booking so that curated experiences can be designed that meet their goals.

Developed by nutritionists, performance psychologists and physiologists, a guest’s experience might be very different than the one tailored to his or her traveling companion.

“We pay attention to the rhythm of each guest, and by understanding their lifestyle and intentions we can create those magical, aha moments,” explains LaLonde, who recognizes some travelers may consider the concept of a wellness retreat inconsistent with the indulgent escape typically sought out by vacationers. “We often associate health with restraints, but feeling energized through wellness can provide a real sense of freedom,” says LaLonde, who hopes Sensei guests will apply the principals they learn

on the island to their lives back home.

Amenities at the nearby Four Seasons Lanai resort ensure plenty of traditional escape for Sensei guests, including a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course whose 12th hole is famously perched on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Other offsite activities include zip lines, sailing, scuba diving, and horseback riding.

Blackberry Farm is a resort that seamlessly blends wellness and luxury amidst the natural beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. Virtually everything that arrives at the dining table, from meats to honey, is produced on the 4,200-acre property, and the resort hosts acclaimed artists, authors and wellness experts for inspiring experiences that complement world-class chefs and vintners.

A study in rustic elegance, The Wellhouse at Blackberry Farm is much more than just a spa. In addition to signature treatments like Smoky Mountain Skin Glow or the Appalachian Body Purification, The Wellhouse offers an herb garden, tranquility room, pool, various fitness regimens, and a table of farm-fresh items too satisfying to be healthy. The Farm’s outdoor activities include mountain biking, kayaking and deep woods meditation addressing both body and soul. The resort adopts a balanced approach to health and wellness, resulting in a wide spectrum of healthy activities, but no feeling of deprivation.

Blackberry Farm’s amenities and services are designed to encourage relaxation and renewal, while also nurturing sustainable habits one can continue at home. Hope Parks, a wellness lifestyle expert at the property, reports that Blackberry Farm tailors its wellness programming to individual guests, meeting them where they are in their personal wellness journey. “We assess what they want to address, things they may want to improve upon or strengthen, and then offer personalized guidance about how to move forward toward their goals,” says Parks.

“Like everywhere on the Farm, the connection and attention to detail at The Wellhouse set us apart from the traditional spa experience,” reports spa and wellness director Kathy Rivard. “Enjoying time at The Wellhouse is certainly about relaxing or experiencing a great

treatment, but it’s also about feeling tended to and feeling completely welcome to embrace your individual experience,” she says.

Located in the rugged foothills north of San Diego is Golden Door, whose serene Japanese gardens and attentive service make it one of the nation’s top health and wellness resorts. Activities include swimming, tennis or hiking through 600 acres of flowering foothills and citrus groves, as well as daily in-room massages. A personalized meal plan is created for each guest, and with only 40 rooms, Golden Door offers a four-to-one ratio of staff to guests that results in truly customized experiences.

The boutique property is distinguished by its unique architecture, inspired by a traditional Japanese ryokan (country inn). “Our guests are able to pause and have a kind of clarity that can only be experienced in this kind of unique setting,” reports Golden Door general manager Kathy Van Ness, who notes the environment is paired with a quiet style of personalized service. “Each guest has a private concierge that ensures their week is both energizing and mindful,” she explains.

Van Ness states, “We provide our guests with individual programming to cultivate their own unique inner-calm and the emotional support to regain a healthy body and mind.” She insists the resort’s focus on wellness particularly resonates during challenging times, stating, “It provides a lifeline to cope with fear, anxieties and the health issues that can arise from inactivity,

diet and stress.”

Golden Door’s Van Ness reports her guests represent all ages and nationalities, but what they have in common is a deep determination to adopt a healthy lifestyle. “Each week I see guests arriving with the weight of the world on their shoulders,” says Van Ness. “When they depart, they have a glow and are ready to tackle the world!”

There are few places trending hotter than Austin, Texas, a city whose lively food and music scenes complement a booming technologydriven economy. Lake Austin Spa Resort

pampers guests with programs geared toward mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. In addition to an acclaimed spa, its staff assists guests in managing stress, adopting healthier lifestyles or dealing with loss and grief.

General Manager Jeff Holland states, “Our location on the tranquil shores of Lake Austin makes us unique,” citing scientific evidence that proximity to water alleviates depression and anxiety. With just 40 rooms, the resort can easily customize itineraries for guests, but many enjoy creating their own experiences. “We provide as little or as much guidance as someone needs,” says Holland.

Holland sees no signs of the pandemic slowing down the hospitality industry’s health and wellness craze. “We feel in the coming years, finding solutions for loneliness, depression and ways to improve mental wellness — as well as building a strong immune system — will be top of mind,” says Holland.

“Our guests are curious about science and health, comfortable trying new things like acupuncture or myofascial massage in a heated pool, and discovering new culinary experiences,” says Holland. Lake Austin Spa Resort’s cuisine is described as “conscientious,” but in the hands of executive chef Stéphane Beaucamp — he has helmed fashionable kitchens in Paris and L.A. — nobody is likely to feel deprived.

Winemaking Women

The wine industry, steeped in tradition and slow to evolve, is being reenergized by a growing contingent of innovative women vintners.

Like agriculture in general, the cultivation of vineyards and the winemaking process has been dominated by men for millennia. Only recently has greater equity in the industry begun to emerge, first evident by the number of female sommeliers counseling guests at world-class restaurants. Gradually, the number of women winemakers and vineyard owners is increasing, too, although parity is still just an aspiration.

Lucia Albino Gilbert, Ph.D., professor emerita at Santa Clara University and The University of Texas at Austin, is the co-author, with husband John C. Gilbert, Ph.D., of Women Winemakers: Personal Odysseys. The couple also maintains a website database entitled Women Winemakers of California and Beyond. “We had heard that women in California had shattered the glass ceiling and wanted to learn more about how this had come about,” says Gilbert of the

inspiration for the book, but reports that their research did not bear that out.

In an initial 2011 study by the Gilberts, only 9.8 percent of California wineries’ lead winemakers were women. A 2020 follow-up indicated that number had inched up to a stillanemic 14 percent. In terms of ownership, the Gilberts’ research reveals that female ownership or co-ownership represents at least 38 percent of California wineries, with most of those being wife/ husband enterprises. However, only two (a mere eight percent) of the 25 largest U.S. wineries identified by Wine Business Monthly in 2021 reported a woman CEO.

The Gilberts also studied wine industries in Europe and New Zealand and report that, while New Zealand appears more open to women winemakers, European wineries are more comparable to California’s. “Our book illuminates the similarities, across cultures, of women’s

experiences working in a male-dominated industry and also identifies the challenges associated with the unique cultural histories of the various wine regions,” explains Gilbert. “What these many women had in common was ability, persistence and passion for their work, as well as a vision for accomplishing their goals despite the obstacles,” she maintains.

Professor Gilbert believes women have simply not been viewed as deserving leadership roles in the production of wine. “The pioneering women needed to find their own pathways without a clear map for doing so, and had to possess the verve and talent to progress in their careers,” she says. Asserting the playing field is still not level, Gilbert reports, “Women winemakers often need to be more talented and hard-working than their male peers in order to be recognized as successful.”

Maggie Kruse, winemaker at California’s

Jordan Vineyard & Winery, was born in Milwaukee where her father worked in a local brewery, but had a passion for wine. “Fermentation runs in the family,” jokes Kruse, who reports her dad encouraged her to enroll in the prestigious viticulture and enology program at the University of California, Davis.

Although Kruse never had a woman winemaker as a mentor, she had the experience of working for Judy Jordan at J Vineyards & Winery, a rare female CEO, early in her career. “She was so motivating and positive that I was very proud to be on her team,” Kruse recounts of the pioneering executive, and reports she tries to emulate those qualities in her own leadership style at Jordan. “Here the management team is mostly women,” reports Kruse, but notes the cellar staff is predominantly male.

“I’m surprised the number of women winemakers is so low because here in Sonoma

County there are a lot of talented women winemakers,” says Kruse, who notes there were more women than men in her classes at UC Davis. Celebrated women winemakers who have inspired Kruse include MaryAnn Graf, Zelma Long and Cathy Corison.

Kruse has participated in 15 vintages at Jordan, which specializes in red wines crafted in the style of Bordeaux and whites inspired by the Chardonnay-based wines from Burgundy. Promoted to head winemaker in 2019, Kruse oversees every aspect of the day-to-day operations in the cellars, including selecting barrels, fermentation monitoring, blending, bottling, and labeling, all the while collaborating with colleagues who manage the vineyards.

“At Davis, I was fortunate to have an amazing student advisor who suggested I take a fall quarter off and work at a cellar,” says Kruse, who got her hands dirty at Clos LaChance

Vineyards in California’s Northern Central Coast region. It was an invaluable experience that confirmed her career choice while revealing some hard truths. The aspiring winemaker realized that despite the romanticization of winemaking, it is essentially farming and the physicality of the job can be difficult for women.

Kruse, however, cites another physical reality that gives women an advantage in the industry, namely an overallocation of taste and olfactory receptors that enhance the palate. “The job of winemaker also requires quick decisions made with confidence, and women tend to be great at juggling,” quips Kruse.

Amy Bess Cook founded Woman-Owned Wineries in 2017 as a vehicle to bring greater equity to the male-dominated wine industry. The organization shares the unique stories of women winery owners, hopefully inspiring a new generation of female wine entrepreneurs. “There

“I’m surprised the number of women winemakers is so low because here in Sonoma County there are a lot of talented women winemakers,” says Kruse.

are limitations for women in the industry and I wanted to help some of them get the recognition they deserved,” says Cook.

While the number of lead winemakers is few, the number of woman-owned wineries can be even more depressing, with Cook estimating that only about 600 of America’s approximately 10,000 wineries are owned by women. “For whatever reason, wine remains a male-dominated industry, even though men and women are educated at places like UC Davis in equal numbers and they enter the field in equal numbers,” says Cook. There are limited career tracks and limited encouragement for women, she insists, and notes that only a tiny fraction of venture capital ends up in the hands of women entrepreneurs.

In the absence of financial equity and government policies to close the gap, Cook suggests consumers can play a role in leveling the playing field. Her wine club, exclusively featuring woman-owned wineries, doubled its subscriptions last December. “We’ve seen a surge of support, not just from women, but anybody with a desire

to shop conscientiously,” says Cook, who adds, “Even in a pandemic, people are still using wine to connect with one another.”

Black Cat Vineyard is a boutique winery in Napa Valley whose artisanally produced wines consistently receive critical acclaim. Proprietor/ winemaker Tracey Reichow founded Black Cat in 1999, entering the commercial market in 2004. Her 20-plus acres, scattered in small vineyards across Napa Valley, yield small volumes of premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Zinfandel. Delighted by the fact that the same grape is profoundly influenced by each different micro-terroir, Reichow reports, “I get to make eight or nine different vineyard-specific wines that are an expression of my partnership with Mother Nature.”

As a former bond trader Reichow is accustomed to working in male-dominated industries, and suggests that a fundamental barrier to women becoming winemakers is the physicality of the job. She believes, however, that women have inherent advantages in the

field, beyond their reputed taste and olfactory superiority. “Women are more likely to extract themselves from the corporate world and be driven into entrepreneurial positions,” explains Reichow, echoing her personal experience.

Noting the patience demanded of winemakers — a single vintage may require a decade of preparation — Reichow maintains, “Women are more willing to defer reward, which is essential for good winemaking.” She strongly endorses the concept of the owner/winemaker, stating, “The best wines are made by a winemaker who is the boss, an owner rather than an employee,” and insists, “You can’t make good wine by committee.”

Some women winemakers are celebrities, with everybody from Madonna to Nancy Pelosi dabbling in the alluring industry. Cameron Diaz’s Avaline wines, among them a GrenacheSyrah red blend and French-informed rosé, are marketed as organically produced, while Mary J. Blige’s Sun Goddess label is a partnership with an Italian winery.

In Texas, three generations of women oversaw the conversion of part of their family’s longhorn cattle ranch into Triple N Ranch Winery.

Wine grapes have been cultivated in Texas for hundreds of years, but the Lone Star State’s viticultural industry is now earning attention from wine journalists and sommeliers. After focusing on Bordeaux blends, innovative Texas winemakers are now experimenting with warm-weather grapes that better suit the state’s climate, such as Rhône Valley varietals, Tempranillo or Sangiovese.

Three generations of Texas women are contributing to the development of Triple N Ranch Winery, located an hour southeast of Dallas: Nan Creel, the matriarch of the family, daughter and winery owner Nan Michelle Anderson and granddaughter Nan Christina Crampton. The family, inspired by their traditional annual visits to Napa Valley during harvest season, carved 12 acres out of their 140-acre longhorn cattle ranch to dedicate to wine production and converted a hay barn into a tasting room.

Founded just last year, Triple N Ranch Winery already bottles Viognier, Roussanne and a Montepulciano rosé, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Tannat (a red grape originally from southwest France). The nascent winery’s first planting on its own estate is occurring this May, an acre of Paseante and Camminare Noir with guidance from viticulture experts at UC Davis and Texas A&M.

“The Texas wine industry is really opening up, and Texans are strong, proud and determined,” states Anderson, who adds, “A lot of Californians are moving here and have high expectations.” Insisting opportunities for women are growing, Anderson reports, “In the Hill Country [Texas’ best known wine region], you see more and more women as assistant winemakers and winemakers, even winery owners.”

Half-sisters Robin and Andréa McBride are among the most prominent of a small but growing number of African American women vintners. Grapes from both California and New Zealand — the sisters were raised separately in those respective wine regions — go into the McBride Sisters Collection and Black Girl Magic wines produced by their Oakland, California-based winery.

DEEP END OF LUXURY

Even in middle-class subdivisions, the presence of a private swimming pool conveys an aura of extravagance, transforming an ordinary backyard into a suburban sanctuary. With bona fide luxury properties, swimming pools can become showstoppers that reflect a lavish lifestyle through elegant aesthetics and over-thetop amenities.

Keller Williams agent Suzanne Carroll Mitchell, based in suburban Dallas, reports that buyers in her market are very conscious of pool design and all the available bells and whistles. “People who buy a high-end home appreciate upscale finishes and aesthetics, so a pool is a must for a luxury homebuyer,” says Mitchell.

“In our area, high-end properties are typically large and Texas can be hot in the summer, so people want that pool for entertaining guests and children,” explains Mitchell. She reports many buyers prefer complete waterscapes that include outdoor kitchens and living areas with televisions and fire features. “Lighting is

Featuring

also important, whether it’s rotating colors at the pool or landscape lighting,” says Mitchell, who suggests, “It all adds to an ambiance that makes the backyard feel like a resort.”

Los Angeles-based Studio William Hefner specializes in traditional and modern residences in the ultra-affluent enclaves of Beverly Hills, Brentwood and Hancock Park. In L.A., a swimming pool is not only a necessity, but an opportunity for a homeowner to make a statement, and the glamorous infinity edge pools carved into the Hollywood Hills do just that. “Pools are definitely important to clients,” reports Hefner, who adds, “They see them as a centerpiece of the backyard for outdoor

entertaining, whether for recreational use, or as a visual element.”

“Pools need to complement the architectural concept,” states Hefner, who observes a trend toward tile pools. “The tiles are a status element because they distinguish a pool and they’re so expensive,” explains the architect, who cites one of his projects in Beverly Hills as a prime example. “The swimming pool is fully tiled, extravagantly large and wraps around three sides of the main entertaining patio, says Hefner, who maintains, “It creates the feeling of being at a resort rather than a home.”

Based outside of Nashville, but serving a national clientele is J.Brownlee Design, creator of dramatic waterscapes in the backyards of luxury homeowners. Reporting that many clients are inspired by their travels, founder Jason Brownlee explains, “The resort-style pool has become kind of the norm,” adding, “The more people travel, the more they see and want to bring back home.”

Budgets in more traditional suburban settings are approximately $500,000$700,000, according to Brownlee, but the true showstopping projects can easily exceed $2 million. “If you can take something you expect and give it a twist that really gets people’s attention, that’s a win from a design perspective,” explains Brownlee of his philosophy.

Some variation of edge detailing is the most

requested design element, observes Brownlee, who says the infinity edge (a.k.a. vanishing edge) is still immensely popular, and homeowners need not be perched on an ocean bluff for it to be effective. A newer trend is the Lautner edge, also referred to as a knife edge, named after the revered Mid-Century Modern architect who first raised the water level to the plane of the deck, creating a clean, seductive aesthetic. “It’s a simple thing, but is one of the most powerful visuals you can create,” says Brownlee.

Fire is also in demand, reports Brownlee, who states, “It’s dramatic and intriguing, so adding fire features to a backyard environment makes you

want to sit and stay in the space.” A recent awardwinning project from J.Brownlee Design features a massive pool for a European-inspired estate in Tennessee, complete with fountains, bridges and no fewer than eight fire features.

Aquatic Consultants, Inc. is one of the leading designers of luxury swimming pools, whose over-the-top concepts appeal to clients around the world. Andy Kaner, president of the Miami-based company, states, “One important trend, which has been popular for some time, is blurring the line between indoors and out, including bringing the water as close as possible to the living environment.”

Overflow and edging details are always priorities, says Kaner, who explains that Aquatic Consultants has experimented with several variations of the Lautner edge. “Grass edges are at the forefront right now, especially since faux grass has become so much more believable,” he says. Representing Aquatic Consultants’ ability to push the envelope, Kaner reports, “We incorporate acrylic panels or see-through floors suspended over living spaces, and for a current project we’ve designed an acrylic pool cantilevered over a barbecue area.”

For a spectacular project in the Caribbean, Aquatic Consultants designed a 360-degree vanishing edge that cascades into a lazy river. The project also includes a sunken fire pit, acrylic

bridge to a spa and a Baja shelf (shallow water lounging area) whose transparent floor offers glimpses into an additional tier. For another luxury residence, the firm designed a spa that is cantilevered over an oceanside cliff, with views of the crashing waves below presented through a see-through floor.

Tampa-based Ryan Hughes Design Build is one of the nation’s leading swimming pool specialty firms, known not only for imaginative pools, but for the elaborate outdoor living environments that complement the poolside lifestyle. Best representing president/creative director Ryan Hughes’ imagination is the Amarula Sun, a pool and outdoor living project for a palatial 25,000-square-foot home on the Gulf Coast outside of Clearwater Beach.

At Amarula Sun, four pools are situated on separate tiers, connected by cascading waterfalls and illuminated by fire pits or seductive LED backlighting. Accents like 24-karat-gold tiles are among the finishing touches on the 10,000-square-foot, $2 million outdoor space that required sophisticated engineering solutions to complete. A luxurious open-air pavilion features a full bar, chef’s kitchen and ornate details that match the grandeur of the main residence.

In a Contemporary South Florida home, Hughes and his team created a sunken, circular island-like patio nearly entirely surrounded by

water, anchored by a massive fire pit, while a Romanesque pool with lion head fountains seamlessly mirrors the architectural elements of a more classically inspired estate.

Luxury homes in 17 countries, ranging from Contemporary interpretations of French châteaux to dramatic expressions of Modernism, carry the imprint of Los Angeles-based Landry Design Group. Nearly all of these residences include swimming pools, and their purpose transcends the obvious role of recreational amenity.

At Landry Design Group’s Ridge House, a Contemporary estate in Beverly Hills, the pool features an upper spa with surrounding Baja shelf, which then cascades down to the lower pool and grotto. The lower pool is an expansive arc of water — a curvaceous reimagination of the straightforward lap pool — with its infinity edge perched on the periphery of the hillside lot. Serving both recreational and aesthetic purposes, this pool reflects the curvature of the home’s multiple rooflines and is a memorable entertainment space.

The Ridge House’s unique location demanded an innovative approach to connecting the outdoor space to the surrounding landscape. “Whenever designing a home, we approach pool and water features as an integral part of the architecture,” reports Suzanne Shepela, associate at Landry Design Group. She adds,

“They’re meant to be used for recreation but can also lend character, detail and richness to the architectural vocabulary.”

“The pool elements were designed as an extension of the home’s architecture, using curves and tiers that relate to the various living spaces as well as providing an opportunity to bring the expansive ocean and city views into the home,” explains Shepela. “Additionally, the curved infinity lap pool blurs the separation between the residence and the water [a scenic local reservoir] below,” she reports.

New York-based sculptor and painter Sergio Furnari is renowned for his hand-painted, handfired ceramic tiles that can transform an ordinary swimming pool into a dazzling composition. “It’s like owning a Picasso or Dalí,” says the colorful Sicilian-born artist whose porcelain or terra cotta tiles add new dimensions to pools at luxury residences and hotels around the world.

The flowering, nautilus-like patterns on the floor of the pool at the Graycliff Hotel in the Bahamas brings both elegance and whimsy to the setting, and Funari takes pride in its durability. “There have been a dozen hurricanes there since it was built in 2009, but it looks better now than the day it was finished,” he comments. “Like a great brandy, it gets better with age,” jokes the artist.

Although Funari has applied his handpainted tiles to plazas, murals and fountains, he views swimming pools as an ideal canvas for his art. “When you’re in the water you become part of the painting, like floating with a Picasso, and because the water is like a lens, the design and color are constantly changing to the eye,” he observes.

Funari is now trying to find a home for his “Pool of Dreams,” an extravagant 27,000-squarefoot swimming pool that would be the largest ever constructed. Potential locations include Qatar, site of the 2022 World Cup, and South Florida. “It would be seen from the satellites in the heavens,” quips the artist who says the Roman baths near his hometown of Caltagirone, Sicily inspired his niche specialty. “When I swim in one of my pools, I feel like a Roman, even if it’s in New Jersey,” says the good-humored artist.

While pools have always been an essential amenity for luxury living, a pandemic forcing people to spend more time at home has only encouraged homeowners to invest more heavily in their backyards. These unique waterscapes, equal parts architectural statements and recreational assets, are not just for swimming.

Opening Doors

Having grown up in the Caribbean, Dennese Guadeloupe Rojas believes her cultural background has shaped her perspective as a designer.

“We are all a compilation of our life experiences and cultural backgrounds,” says Guadeloupe Rojas, owner and principal designer at Interiors by Design. “I bring an appreciation for open, airy spaces and a broad spectrum of color to my interior designs. Often, a hint of the tropics is incorporated as a nod to my island heritage.”

In an effort to infuse her interiors with vibrant accent colors, Guadeloupe Rojas uses patterned upholstered seating, textured ceilings, and colorful walls.

Guadeloupe Rojas strives to serve a culturally diverse client base. “Home is personal, that warm place where you can totally escape

the rigors of life and completely relax,” she says. “The challenge is to create a ‘clientspecific’ interior design that addresses all of the key elements of home: functionality, comfort, and style that reflects the personality of my individual clients.”

The American Society of Interior Designers reports that less than 2 percent of its membership identifies as Black. “The wealth of talent that Black interior designers bring to the marketplace is slowly opening the doors of inclusion in the industry,” says Guadeloupe Rojas, who is also a member of the Women’s Presidents Association and the Black Artists and Designers Guild.

The seasoned designer talks about her experience as a Black interior designer, later sharing design insights — from her favorite colors and textures, to where she gathers inspiration.

Can you talk about your experience being one of the Top 20 African American Interior Designers?

Black designers are a supportive group of design professionals that advise and exchange information and business strategies with one another. Inclusion in the Top 20 African American Interior Designers is not only an honor, but industry recognition of my work from the entire community.

Which patterns, colors, and textures define your style?

Unique color-infused patterns can be reflected in area rugs, upholstered furniture, and wall coverings that become integral dimensions of the overall design of a room. Colors currently in play in my active design projects are shades of orange, crimson, and purple with blue undertones. Textures can be used to contribute significant color to the overall room design. In some of my most recent design projects, I combine metals and woods to create a modern temper to the room design.

Where do you gather inspiration?

My clients are my ultimate inspiration. When I listen to their enthusiastic vision for their new home design projects, I become motivated to create an exciting design that exceeds their expectations, but not their budgets. Designers who work collaboratively with their clients relieve unnecessary stress from the physical performance of design projects.

What do you consider when designing a vacation or second home?

Second homes, and particularly vacation homes, serve as a relished escape. The change in geographic location opens up another dimension to the homeowner’s personality. Most often, the more traditional client with a transitional decor in their primary residence will welcome a lighter and more contemporary decor that is more relaxed for a getaway home.

What does a successful project look like to you?

A successful project is synonymous with a happy and elated client. For me, client satisfaction is the measure of success. Clients entrust their home space to you for the purpose of creating an enhanced and luxurious sanctuary.

Terrestrial Paradise

In the heart of the historic Newton district of Singapore, a garden of tropical, lush greenery shoots towards the sky and towers above.

More than just a garden, EDEN is a 22-story, ultra-luxury apartment building that stands out among Singapore’s traditional glass and steel structures with vibrant plant life extending from the ground up to the rooftop.

A joint vision between Thomas Heatherwick — founder of Heatherwick Studio and Designer of EDEN — and Swire Properties, the biophilic apartment building blossomed in this exclusive luxury district with a climate that nurtures tropical foliage and a design that encourages a connection between residents and nature. This lively apartment building is a leafy paradise among urban living.

“We felt that it was important to move away from some of the impersonal, manufactured developments we had seen in the region,” says Mat Cash, partner and group leader at Heatherwick Studio. “Instead, we chose to celebrate the quirks and unique textures of different materials to make a building that felt more organic and would be truly distinctive.” The entire look and feel of the building is utterly unique, which lends to the original design and concept, a city in a garden with invigorating cross ventilation and open spaces.

The idea of traditional block apartments was torn apart and deconstructed to create an unconventional design that is executed so well in EDEN. Each floor is its own apartment, with 20 apartments total. The service areas have been moved to the perimeter, creating large central living spaces, which are surrounded by smaller private rooms and wide balconies.

Cash explains how the initial inspiration held firm throughout the

project. “Rather than isolating hermetically sealed boxes, we wanted to create open, flowing homes that raised into the sky and connected with the lush physical environment of Singapore. It was clear to us from the outset that the design should embrace the natural environment and that did not really change throughout the process.”

The spirit and nature of Singapore shines through EDEN, even in the smallest of details. The designers have shown an appreciation for the big and small components. “This is a handcrafted building. It isn’t just a ubiquitous off-the-shelf package of expensive components,” notes Cash.

The natural components meld together in EDEN, from the foliage to the flooring to the front door. Textured slate on the balconies meets oak floors on the interiors that came from the United Kingdom. The bathroom walls and floors are decked with 180-million-year-old cross-cut Jura limestone from Germany where fossilized imprints can still be spotted.

“Every detail has been designed to work with the richness of nature that we found in Singapore, and to celebrate that biophilic connection. We focused on the human scale, using texture and rich materiality to create a very personal and close relationship between the building and the residents,” according to Cash.

EDEN, from top to bottom, acknowledges the environmental impact and is a counterpoint to flat, steel buildings that are most popular in cities. Cash explains that the communal garden on the ground level encourages social interactions and helps keep the building’s footprint at ground level to a minimum. The garden rises up the balconies and the hand-selected greenery cascades down from the sky garden.

“To create an exuberant waterfall of foliage, we have used a range of trailing plants of different lengths to drape over the balconies at intervals,” according to Cash. The plants have all been carefully selected to thrive in Singapore’s climate, and to streamline maintenance, compatible plants were placed together to minimize the need for heavy intervention.

Do you think designs such as this, with a strong emphasis on nature will become more popular or remain a novelty?

“Buildings of the last 100 years have tended to remove us from our connection to nature; we thought we needed to live in ‘machines for living’ instead of homes for humans. Since the pandemic, we understand more than ever the value of having a natural connection through gardens, parks, plants and trees,” says Cash.

“It’s really important to smell the plants after rain or see the gentle ripple of leaves as they move. It’s about creating an environment that gives people a sense of well-being and calm.”
