WELCOME TO

As you gaze at the home on the front cover, all of your cares can wash away in the infinity-edge pool as it disappears into the Gulf of Mexico. This Florida escape takes full advantage of its location, including multiple balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows. It exudes the warmth and relaxation the world is seeking — characteristics many of us associate with summertime. And it’s just one of the dozens of dreamy homes featured in this summer edition of Keller Williams Luxury.

Luxury is more than real estate – it is a lifestyle – so each season we bring you more than just fantastic properties. Our editorial lineup will keep you reading by the pool about luxurious getaways and unique outdoor spaces. Imagine a pool made up of its own separate “rooms,” including a private plunge pool, day bed, wet bar, and mood lighting.

For many, summer is peak travel time, so we’ve dedicated three stories to globe-trotting. In “4 Tours for July 4,” we present four opportunities to celebrate your freedom and explore the United States, from Alaska to Hawaii, Maine and more. In “Toast-to-Toast,” learn about wine country escapes in places you may not have imagined (hint: they’re not all in California). And in “Solar Opposites,” we travel far afield, cross hemispheres, and visit lands where summer turns to winter in the course of a plane trip. It’s always ski season or harvest time somewhere!

Closer to home, we investigate always changing design trends, taking a look at the newest color for 2022 and what’s cooking with the latest in kitchen countertops.

Meanwhile, the impacts of the pandemic continue to shape our world. In real estate, we’ve seen a “Great Home Migration.” In the article, five experienced real estate agents across the United States share with us how they’re navigating a changing market.

Please enjoy the newest Keller Williams Luxury. As life heats up — at least in this hemisphere — our dedicated agents stand at the ready to represent you, and help you with your real estate needs.

Very Peri

An era of profound change calls for an equally matchless color.

When experts at Pantone looked for a color to symbolize 2022, they searched beyond the traditional palette and responded with Very Peri, a unique hue characterized as “a dynamic periwinkle with a vivifying violet-red undertone.” The choice of something so singular this year was not a surprise.

Unlike former annual selections, Very Peri is an entirely new hue, created to reflect the prevailing mood or “the global zeitgeist” as Pantone said in the early December 2021 announcement. “Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place,” said Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, referring to a world moving out of isolation and into a transformative era and unprecedented change.

Color Chameleon

Instead of simply being a take on periwinkle’s bright blue, Very Peri is nuanced with undertones of lilac, violet and gray that impart a subtle moodiness, making it compatible, maybe even an ideal complement, with the unanticipated course 2022 seems to be taking.

Rather than periwinkle, Very Peri appears to many as a take on purple or even gray. “From a designer’s perspective, it’s very versatile,” says Dennese Guadeloupe Rojas of Interiors by Design in Silver Spring, Maryland, who describes the hue as “a rich shade of violet with subtle undertones of blue and gray.” She envisions a range of applications from a pop of color to statement walls. “The distinct violet tones would be particularly dramatic in rooms with an abundance of natural light filtering through flowing sheer panels or white shutters,” she says.

Spicing Up Interiors

Today, most of us are searching for ways to add vibrance and a sense of optimism to our homes. “Clients are gravitating toward color in general. For a while, everything was gray and neutral. Now, clients want warm tones mixed with bright colors and patterns,” says Marissa Stokes of Marissa Stokes Interior Design.

6

Mariko Blakemore, a designer with Stoneside Blinds and Shades in San Francisco, highlights the challenge of incorporating new trends and colors into living spaces in a way that meshes with lifestyle and existing furnishings. “Varieties of gray furniture/paint/finishes have been going strong for a while, and people still have a lot of lovely gray elements. But

there is also a growing feeling that we’ve been oversaturated in gray. To make our gray furniture exciting again, both Very Peri and Evergreen Fog (Sherwin Williams pick for 2022) wall colors are good compliments.”

“It is incumbent upon designers to introduce their clients to the spectrum of new colors every year and demonstrate how they

can incorporate them in their home design. As a designer, I absolutely love Very Peri and will integrate it into my designs as a primary wall color and also as a compliment to all shades of gray and rich whites,” adds Guadeloupe Rojas. What makes Pantone’s choice so adaptable is the range of tones it pulls into the overall effect. Such a sophisticated depth will add “the

perfect balance to a room when paired correctly with contrasting colors,” says Stokes. “From an interior perspective, Very Peri has a timeless, calming feel to it that should make it easily incorporated into interiors. I imagine we’ll see it used more and more in fabrics, and it would be a great color for an accessory to add the right subtle pop to a room.”

“All shades of purple have been a personal favorite of mine, but most clients find it a bit intimidating to work with as it can come off a bit too regal if you’re not careful. I was thrilled to see Very Peri; it is such an easy option to layer into most palettes, as it is so complementary to most colors,” says Chris Goddard with Goddard Design Group.

Virtual Vibrations

Hues akin to Very Peri already exist in the virtual design world. Taking cues from both physical and virtual influences, it also calls attention to the ways in which these two realms have come together, a change Pantone’s experts wanted to underscore.

Still, designers see connections to Very Peri in the physical world. “In Florida, blue is always a go-to. Any shade of blue looks great in our light! This shade that has a hint of plumbago, one of our local flowers, is perfect for fabrics inside, as well as by the pool,” observes Phyllis Taylor of Miami-based design firm Taylor & Taylor.

Not quite blue and not quite purple, Very Peri might take time to find its way into interiors, although designers such as Goddard already report seeing more splashes of lavender and purple. “The Kips Bay Decorator Show House this year was filled with rooms with all shades of purple, and I feel this will help to introduce the shade to the public, and we will be seeing it pop up everywhere for years to come.”

Colors of the year, particularly from Pantone’s color institute, influence more than interiors. Not just a pop-culture phenomenon, these annual choices reverberate through the design community, spilling over to interiors, fabrics, fashion, automotive and industrial products as well as making a splash in digital design, advertising and products overall. It might take a few months, but soon Very Peri will appear everywhere.

Dive In!

Keller Williams Luxury spoke with creators of elegant pools to gain inspiration for the summer season.

There are swimming pools, and then there are luxury pool getaways. It takes a step outside the box to create something unique in an outdoor space — perhaps a pool made up of its own separate rooms, with a private plunge pool, day bed, wet bar, and mood lighting will do?

Meet Paul Weinberg and John Fair, a landscape architect and developer bringing a new meaning to the word “pool.” Weinberg and Fair are in the process of bringing their ideas to life for The Strand, a hidden retreat in the pristine islands of Turks and Caicos, complete with personal villas, residences and custom home sites for sale. On top of 2,230 feet of private shoreline, each home on The Strand will have a

luxury pool, most of which will sit right on the edge of the ocean.

“The pool is the culmination of the outdoor experience,” notes Weinberg.

In order to achieve this experience, Weinberg and Fair implemented infinity edges, jade green native Sukabumi stone, fire pits and floating daybeds in the blueprints for each of the residences on the property.

Interestingly, the pools also feature different partitions or rooms: a sunken plunge pool, a lap swimming lane, waterfall section, and portions for your wet bar and daybed.

One of their other favorites to discuss is the mood lighting: “There is a low glow that emanates from the house out, for low-mood

9

lighting. We wanted to use intentional design instead of spotlights,” Weinberg said.

But through and through, Fair also values an emphasis on incorporating elements of the environment, mainly through the indigenous, coral stone and the presence of the iron shore waterfront.

“This brings honesty and integrity, which is very important and gives it a timeless feel,” Fair says.

Also taking advantage of gorgeous environmental settings in an international locale is Boca do Lobo, a craftsmanship giant that originated in 2005, who, alongside NA Architects, curated a stunning pool space outside of an interior design project of theirs in Jubilee Hills, India.

Titled the “Eco Friendly IGBC Green House,” this gallery-type pool is centered around open-air spaces that aim to take in as much natural light as possible, says Boca do Lobo of the home.

“Surrounded by stone, this pool design is absolutely unique,” they say. “It perfectly fits the project aesthetic, as it has a simple, natural vibe, but it also gives an exclusive and luxurious touch to the outside.”

As any good pool does, here you can see that it truly is an extension of the themes from inside of the home. Boca do Lobo notes that the pool’s best features are its ability to create a very private feel for your soak, as well as its

offerings once the sun sets: a beautiful lighting set alongside the waterfall boosts the perfect mood at night.

Other luxury pool designers include Soake Pools, a family-run New England business spearheaded by co-founders Karen and Brian Larson. Operating since 2014, Soake Pools are intended to withstand any kind of weather from snow to rain to sun — co-founder Karen Larson

At this gallery space in Jubilee Hills, India, hosted by Boca do Lobo, this stonelined pool (above) perfectly matches the reserved, private feel of the space. This pool is simple yet upscale.

says many of their clients step into their custom pools year round, and cherish it as a statement of their homes.

“We believe that the pool itself should be a centerpiece,” Larson notes. “Our pools become a piece of art within the landscape.”

Each Soake Pool is fully tiled on every surface, and the exterior is finished onsite by landscape professionals in order to blend smoothly into the surrounding area. To further reinforce this natural feel, her landscape partners often use local materials, which give each pool a stronger personal resonance and appearance.

Architect David Montalba also aims to set the perfect mood: taking celebrity status and turning it into an elegant outdoor space. He crafted an impressive poolside courtyard for the flagship store for The Row on Melrose Place, a high-end retail store owned by the Olsen twins in Los Angeles, California.

In the conception of this space, Montalba embodied the elements of California Modernism by seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces. He did this flawlessly through floor-toceiling glass partitions with sliding doors that lead from the back of the store to the outdoor space containing a simplistic shallow pool and greenery.

The Montalba Team describes the details that bring the outdoors in and vice versa: “Natural light floods into the galleries flanking both sides of the pool through operable floor-to-

ceiling structural glass doors and a new 25-footlong skylight,” he notes.

No matter which direction you take, these designers agree that the pool space is a focal point for a home, or even a business space. Larson sums it up best:

“Pools become a destination, a gathering place, as well as an oasis for cooling off, or heating up!” she says.

“Selling a house is significantly more complicated than purchasing one. I interviewed several agents for the job, and Alan Wang stood out decisively among them all. He hit the ground running even during the first meeting, not wasting any time before he did the groundwork and provided a plan for my house. I think the agent-seller relationship must work on both the technical and interpersonal level, and I think Alan and his team knocked it out of the ballpark. They were efficient and detail-oriented, and very responsive every step of the way. Most importantly, they listened to my input, and were willing to work around some of my travel schedules, always going the extra mile to help out in any way possible.”

The Great Home Migration

Five experienced real estate agents across the United States share with us how they’re navigating the pandemic and a changing market.

Aswe shift into living with the pandemic, Keller Williams Luxury magazine has connected with luxury agents to see what big and small adjustments they have made over these last few years and how the pandemic has impacted their businesses. From market trends and inventory challenges to working from home and rebranding, these agents have felt the long- and short-term effects of COVID-19, and proven that Keller Williams agents do not shy away from a challenge.

“We like to think of ourselves as small, but mighty,” says Realtor Paula Hinegardner of Keller Williams Brentwood, TN. Each region across the country presented its own unique set of challenges for agents, families, and business

owners. Smaller, more remote areas such as ski resort towns in Colorado and Southwest Montana saw a rise in second-home buyers. Kate Bradley, a Realtor for Keller Williams Montana Realty explained that she saw “a lot of locals moving elsewhere to capitalize on their equity.” Manhattan, Nashville, and other cities saw buyers looking out of state for more space and access to the outdoors. Yet, there was a clear buckle-down attitude among agents in their regions. The pandemic has not made any exceptions, and these agents decided to stay where they were and make the most of an unprecedented situation.

Day-to-Day Looks A Little Different

differently by the pandemic, but rural or city, everyone’s day-to-day shifted for a while and may still look changed for years to come. “I used to be in the office consistently five days a week, especially during the school season, having two children,” says Bradley, choosing to focus on the positive side of things. “I now mostly work from home and have come to really enjoy the diversity it can provide to my day. I have learned to multitask in ways I never thought possible, while still being able to relax and develop strong boundaries in between tasks.”

Top of the Rockies, was slightly more experienced in this area because most of her clients don’t live in the area full time. “We never did as much in-person connection with our clients as you would in a primary-home area. However, now my clients are more comfortable with everything being done virtually.”

transactions. Mainly because with inventory being so low, many buyers who do not have cash just can’t compete,” notes Bradley.

Hinegardner was experiencing similar trends in the Nashville area with multiple offers above list prices and cash purchases continuing. There’s also been more of what some agents consider creative offers. “This includes things like complimentary use of a beach house or gifts of hard-to-find luxury items as agents and buyers look for ways to beat the competition for great properties,” says Hinegardner. This became common in areas such as Montana and Arizona, which saw a leap in out-of-state buyers coming from bigger cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland, and New York City, which really drove home prices up. Eric Brossart, CEO of Jonny West Real Estate says, “the market is extremely competitive, so buyers are enticing sellers by waiving appraisals. We are seeing many offers accepting properties as-is.”

“One major difference was having to do listing presentations via Zoom,” says Sandy Edry, licensed Realtor and salesperson/ founder of The Edry Team at KWNYC, “which lost the personal touch, but, in turn, helped me really refocus on the basics of my listing presentation.”

Another way that agents have adjusted is through contactless transactions. This new remote world of business was made possible with new technology and techniques, and opened new doors that may never have been explored. Showing houses and making deals over the phone and video has become the new norm. “One major difference was having to do listing presentations via Zoom,” says Sandy Edry, licensed Realtor and salesperson/founder of The Edry Team at KWNYC, “which lost the personal touch, but, in turn, helped me really refocus on the basics of my listing presentation.”

Jennifer Chambers, Associate Broker for J Lux Mountain Homes, Keller Williams Top of the

Rockies, was slightly more experienced in this area, because most of her clients don’t live in the area full time. “We never did as much in-person connection with our clients as you would in a primary-home area. However, now my clients are more comfortable with everything being done virtually.” This is something that will continue to benefit buyers and sellers who are not living in the area and are confident in virtual transactions. Bradley sums up the change perfectly, saying, “I think as all generations become more comfortable with tech, we are more willing and open to collaborating on offers, decisions, and negotiations via these digital platforms.”

Market Trends: Where We’ve Been

Major cities, small businesses, travel, and hospitality surely saw a dip in numbers during the pandemic, but in some areas, the housing market saw a rise in cash offers and multiple offers over asking prices. “About 80-percent of my transactions in the past (pre-pandemic) had some type of financing involved,” says Bradley about the Southwest Montana Regions, including Gallatin, Park, Madison counties, and more. “Now I think about 50-percent of my business in the past two-plus years have been cash

New York was a different situation as they were deep in a buyer’s market throughout a big portion of 2021. “Overall, the market saw a drop of 15-20 percent from pre-pandemic numbers,” according to Edry. Since then, the market has started picking up as many people saw the buying opportunities.

Paula Hinegardner was experiencing similar trends in the Nashville area with multiple offers above list prices and cash purchases continuing. There’s also been more of what some agents consider creative offers. “This includes things like complimentary use of a beach house or gifts of hard-to-find luxury items as agents and buyers look for ways to beat the competition for great properties.”

Eric Brossart, CEO of Jonny West Real Estate says, “the market is extremely competitive, so buyers are enticing sellers by waiving appraisals. We are seeing many offers accepting properties as is.”

Market Trends: What’s To Come

As we all learn to live with these changes, agents have a few ideas about where the market is headed and what kind of shifts to expect. According to Hinegardner, “We have already seen tremendous price appreciation in the first quarter of 2022 and I think we will continue with that trend through the rest of the year.” There is a high demand and low inventory, which is playing an influential role in home values.

“With Nashville’s incredible growth, homes just can’t be built quickly enough. I really believe that we will continue to see multiple offers and offers significantly over the asking price for the remainder of 2022,” says Hinegardner.

Edry predicts that “barring any further worldwide seismic events — which seem to be happening much too frequently — I see a strong seller’s market that will hopefully mellow into a still solid, but not overheated seller’s market.” In Colorado, Chambers says, “I believe there will be a leveling off to a more balanced market.”

Brossart, in the greater Phoenix Metropolitan area, explains that over the next two to three years the market could very well be a different one entirely. “We are extremely sellerfocused and I see that leveling out more, but not truly becoming a buyer’s market in the next three years,” says Brossart.

What Sold During the Pandemic?

The pandemic may have brought with

it some unique challenges that we’ll likely still be navigating for years to come, but there are more than a few success stories in the midst. For example, on March 1, Brossart closed on the biggest deal of his career so far. A $3.5 million, 6,400-square-foot luxury home on top of Scottsdale Mountain, with one of the highest elevations in all of Phoenix. On 8 acres, the property has sweeping mountain views and is surrounded by a preserve, according to Brossart. A new focus has shifted to properties with easy access to nature and other outdoor activities. Bradley also noticed a rising interest in properties with more outdoor space. Just recently, 161 Meadowland Drive, a single-family home in Bozeman, Montana, sold. It sold very quickly, which was no surprise due to its location. “It was backing up to over 10 acres of open space the subdivision owns, with walk trails, which is becoming harder and harder to find,” and something buyers are drawn towards, says Bradley. Buyers are stirring in the cities as well. In New York City, Edry will be helping a client close on a beautiful and fully renovated 2-unit townhome in Park Slope, Brooklyn. “The closing price will be $2.525 million,” he says,

noting that the buyers came through a Keller Williams referral.

The Big 2022 and Future Plans

Thinking about the future can seem daunting in uncertain times and when things change rapidly. These agents have found that the trick is to find what works best for each individual market and region. Some agents are focusing on the here and now, while others are using this unique time to expand and introduce new services. “In 2022, we will be adding to the existing offerings in our Extraordinary Advantage program by partnering with the team at Stock & Trade Design Co.,” says Hinegardner, “a local design and furnishings company.” Whereas Chambers is honing in on the present moment. “Right now, I am extremely focused on the current market, because it’s moving so fast,” she says when asked about what the upcoming market might look like in the next few years.

In New York, Edry is excited about some of the rebranding his team was able to tackle during slower times over the past couple of years and other projects. “I set out to build the first website/portal dedicated to New Development projects in NYC,” adds Edry. “The site is due to launch in the next couple of months.” These changes are expected to attract luxury clientele.

In the Southwest Montana Region, the area is continuing its upward growth. Bradley explains that they “always call our area the Bozeman Bubble, with booming businesses moving in and expanding here.” According to Bradley, in the area, Gallatin College and a new hospital opening their first phase in 2022 have brought new jobs and activities, which have caught the eye of buyers and continue to attract new people to the region.

Kate Bradley also noticed a rising interest in properties with more outdoor space. Just recently, 161 Meadowland Drive, a singlefamily home in Bozeman, Montana, sold. It sold very quickly, which was no surprise due to its location. “It was backing up to over 10 acres of open space the subdivision owns, with walk trails, which is becoming harder and harder to find,” and something buyers are drawn toward.

Although the day-to-day adjustments may be around for a while, buyer and seller habits can shift quickly and will continue to keep agents on their toes. Edry says that “New York was hit hard by the pandemic, especially in the early stages. However, tourists are back in force and the streets are becoming vibrant again.” Similarly, Brossart notes, “we are never at a shortage of people looking for their next dream home. We are seeing a rejuvenation in our community and people are ready to get back to building their dreams.”

Recreating the elegance and harmony of clouds, these White Cloud porcelain tiles from Atlas Plan feature a light gray background with thin white and darker gray veining.

Aesthetically, countertops can make or break an interior. From marble-effect quartz and stoneeffect slabs to porcelain tiles and stainless steel, professional countertop makers share fresh ideas for your high-end kitchen.

“Countertops can provide some muchneeded contrast to a space or blend in beautifully, depending on the look you’re going for,” says Summer Kath, executive vice president of design for Cambria — maker of quartz

countertops and surfaces.

“In terms of style, you want your countertops to act as a bridge between the cabinets, appliances, plumbing fixtures and flooring,” Kath adds. “Use your countertop design to make a bold statement by contrasting it with the other details of the kitchen, or to round things out by complementing them.”

While the kitchen counter can serve as a “wow factor” to impress guests, it’s also a feature of the home that should prioritize function.

“We know that the kitchen is the heart of

the home, but the countertops are the heart of the kitchen,” says Ken Williams, president and CEO of Caesarstone North America, maker of quartz countertops. “They’re the first thing we see and touch, and they need to work as hard as we do by standing up to food prep, eating, entertaining, homework, work and more, and, of course, they have to be beautiful.”

In most households, the kitchen counter and kitchen island serve as a gathering space, whether you’re preparing a meal with friends, eating breakfast with your family, or helping your children with homework. A countertop with character should simplify your daily routine, reflect your personal lifestyle, and spark joy when you enter the kitchen.

“The color, pattern, and size of your countertop all complement the kitchen experience,” says Michael Morici, team leader of the MSI Slab Division, which offers a selection of quartz, porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone slabs. “You want to make a statement with the countertop yet make the space functional and inviting.”

When it comes to selecting the right material, there are pros and cons to consider for every option — with the most popular being granite, marble, quartz, natural stone, butcher block, and stainless steel.

“Homeowners should consider their countertops an investment,” says Williams. “They are the part of the kitchen that sees the most action, so they need to be hardwearing and made to withstand the test of time,” no matter what material is used.

In 2022, countertop makers are creating intrigue in the kitchen with textured finishes, extralarge slabs, and marble-like veining.

“Over the past few years, we’ve been seeing increased demand for more texture in countertops — both visually and physically,” says Kath, who mentions countertops with veins that ripple dramatically as they would in nature and subtle debossing to give the surface an organic feel.

“The modern kitchen of 2022 is designed to be as accessible and functional as possible,” says Stefano Chiavaroli, business director of

Atlas Plan — creator of ceramic slabs, including marble-effect and stone-effect designs. “The main features are a unique design, minimalist taste, and maximum adaptability.”

It’s key to select a countertop that elevates your interior, while also ensuring the longevity of your selection. When it comes to kitchen remodeling, replacing a countertop is not as easy of a feat as swapping out lighting, replacing cabinet hardware, or adding a backsplash.

The best countertops should be full of character, yet versatile enough to complement classic and modern design styles. Whether with warm whites, deep grays, or bright golds, opt for a surface that has the ability to change with the trends.

“If you go neutral with some of the more permanent fixtures like paint, cabinets, and surfaces, it’s easier to update the other items over time to keep your kitchen looking modern,” Williams says. “Neutral doesn’t mean the surfaces can’t have character. In fact, they absolutely should, because they portray the homeowners’ personality.”

Adding Character in 2022

Neutrals

“In terms of color, neutrals continue to reign supreme in kitchen surfaces, regardless of if that means light, dark or somewhere in between,” says Williams. “Finishes vary from a shiny polished look to a natural or rugged stone appearance based on the overall aesthetic of the room.”

Warm Whites

“White kitchen countertops aren’t going anywhere, but we’ve noticed that warm whites are starting to take over the cool whites and grays of the previous decade,” says Kath. “Kitchen design all around has been warming up, so to speak, with warm wood cabinets coming back into style, warm-hued flooring, and more.”

Color & Warmth

“We are seeing some demand for subtle blues and greens as homeowners are looking for some color and warmth in the kitchen,” says Morici.

Dark Finishes

“We also see dark designs gaining in popularity – not necessarily for the entire kitchen, but for smaller spaces like coffee or wet bars, a built-in desk space in a kitchen, or on the island with white countertops along the perimeter,” says Kath.

Marble Effect

“The marble effect is a classic choice for kitchens, however it also can be revisited in a contemporary way, with elegance and originality,” says Chiavaroli. “Atlas Plan perfectly reproduces the excellence and richness of colors and textures, along with the veining and shading of marble, natural stone and the most innovative designer materials to create alluring atmospheres/environments.”

Toast-to -Toast

The days when a wine country getaway required a journey to California are long gone, with productive vineyards now planted in practically every state. Not only are some of the efforts of pioneering winemakers in places like Arizona and Michigan highly respectable, but their winegrowing regions are rapidly developing into complete destinations that tourists are eager to explore.

Vineyards in states such as Minnesota and Tennessee used to be considered novelties, but thanks to the proliferation of talented winemakers and, in some cases, climate change, there is commendable wine produced in every corner of the nation. Currently, there are recognized American Viticultual Areas (AVAs) — bona fide wine grape growing regions that bring credibility to local products — in 34 different states and counting. Tourists now gather at wineries and tasting rooms in unexpected places like the

Ozark Highlands of Missouri or the Escondido Valley of Texas.

Representing the heart of California wine country, Napa Valley and neighboring Sonoma Valley offer an incredible concentration of luxury resorts and Michelin-starred restaurants. Recently arrived hotels include the Four Seasons Napa Valley and Montage Healdsburg, while restaurants such as Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry and SingleThread anchor one of the world’s most fertile food scenes.

But wine country escapes are found throughout California. Santa Barbara County, a short drive from Los Angeles, has more than 275 wineries and a highly developed hospitality infrastructure. Two hours north of Santa Barbara is Paso Robles, where innovative winemakers and a laid-back ambiance appeal to oenophiles anxious to expand their horizons.

PasoRoblesWineries.net, which promotes the region’s wines to enthusiasts and vacationers, reports the Paso Robles AVA is gaining international attention, reflected by local winery Tablas Creek Vineyard’s affiliation with renowned French producer Château de Beaucastel. “What makes Paso Robles special is not only the wines, but the stunning geography, ancient oak trees, wildlife, and historic downtown,” says Lekai, who insists, “Everybody is warm and welcoming, which adds to the experience.”

A wide range of leisure activities make Paso Robles a compelling destination for California day-trippers and out-of-state travelers alike. In addition to wine tasting, visitors take advantage of craft distilleries and breweries, art galleries, horseback riding, ziplining, and local museums, while dining options range from taquerías to award-winning cuisine. Some of the most spectacular stretches of the California

coast are minutes away, as well as the famed Hearst Castle.

Hotels in Paso Robles are less flashy than their Napa Valley counterparts, but properties like the Tuscan-inspired Allegretto Vineyard Resort offer a relaxed vibe that suits the destination’s personality. Several boutique properties — the Hotel Cheval, for example, features 16 rooms wrapped in European-style luxury — are situated close to Paso Robles’ charming town square and steps from tasting rooms. Lekai, who reports Paso Robles draws not only nationally but internationally, suggests it offers a more approachable and inviting wine country experience than Napa Valley. “It’s a huge draw for wine lovers who want to get out of the city,” insists Lekai.

New York State’s Finger Lakes region is one of the most idyllic places in America, where enchanting villages and family farms surround a series of narrow, glacier-carved lakes. Grapes have been cultivated in this chilly part of the Empire State for almost 200 years, but only recently has the district emerged as a world-class winemaking region. With nearly 150 wineries, watersports and inviting lakeside inns, the Finger Lakes is a destination worth discovering.

“Wine has really helped to propel the region forward because it’s tangible,” reports Brittany Gibson, executive director of the Seneca

Lake Wine Trail, in the heart of the Finger Lakes region. “You can experience it, taste it and talk to the winemakers,” she explains, adding, “All of the things that make us a prime location for winemaking make us a great place to visit.”

Citing the historic Belhurst Castle and Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars among the area’s luxury hotels, Gibson notes the wine industry is also attracting ambitious chefs who are transforming the dining scene.

“We’re still a very rural area with bucolic, wide-open spaces,” advises Gibson, who says artisanal farms and creameries contribute to the local culture. “That’s part of our identity and we don’t want to lose it,” she explains, but reports the city of Geneva, at the northern tip of Seneca Lake, offers more cosmopolitan offerings, as does nearby Ithaca. Because the Finger Lakes are within a five-hour drive of a quarter of the U.S. population, the region hosts visitors from throughout the Northeast, but also wine enthusiasts from California and international tourists.

With a long history of winegrowing, Virginia earns respect from connoisseurs, and the state’s scenic wine country draws visitors from around the world, in addition to weekenders from Washington, D.C. The renowned Michelin threestar dining room at the Inn at Little Washington, about 70 miles from the U.S. capital, reserves

space for home state products on its 90-page wine list. Among them are a Chardonnay from Ankida Ridge in the Blue Ridge Mountains and a Bordeaux blend by Barboursville.

Rita McClenny, president and CEO of Virginia Tourism Corporation, reports that in addition to visitors from the entire East Coast, there is considerable interest in Virginia wine country from the UK, France, Germany, and Canada. “We often hear from our international guests that they appreciate the subtlety of the Old World styles blended with the distinct taste that Virginia’s unique landscape brings to the varietals,” she explains.

“As Virginia continues to become a wine destination, the industry has increased its accessibility to travelers,” says McClenny, referencing tasting rooms providing winemaking classes and hotels offering special packages to wine lovers. “Virginia offers more than 300 wineries that stretch across every region of the state, from the waters of Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains,” says the tourism executive.

“Virginia is one of the only wine destinations in the country where visitors can kayak to a winery, enjoy bluegrass music while sipping local wines or sample regional wines at a national park or historic landmark,” says McClenny. She adds, “Virginia is also home

“We’re still a very rural area with bucolic, wide-open spaces,” advises Gibson, who says artisanal farms and creameries contribute to the local culture. “That’s part of our identity and we don’t want to lose it.”

to wine trails that allow aficionados to sip their way across the Commonwealth, including the Monticello Wine Trail, inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s vision of winemaking.” The scenic Blue Ridge Mountains are the backdrop for Virginia’s Blue Ridge Whisky Wine Loop, which also includes craft distilleries.

Michigan’s surprisingly robust industry — winemakers are experimenting with hardy varietals that suit the state’s harsh climate — draws day-trippers from Detroit and Chicago, as well as tourists exploring the state’s natural beauty. “Michigan sits on the 45th Parallel, along with some of the best winegrowing regions in France,” observes Dave Lorenz, travel director at Michigan Economic Development Corporation. He reports there are approximately 140 wineries in the state, many of which were founded in the last decade, and that wine tasting is a major attraction in Traverse City and other destinations.

“The state offers high quality wine at beautiful wineries, which has benefitted our ‘Pure Michigan’ brand and the perception of a renaissance state,” says Lorenz. Noting Michigan is one of the nation’s leading agricultural states, the tourism specialist explains, “People take pride in Michigan-made products and restaurants throughout the state are emphasizing locallysourced food, wine and distilled products.”

He adds that wineries provide an ideal way to connect tourists to that agrarian heritage and further dispel the state’s Rust Belt image. “What visitors need to know about Michigan is that it’s a place of incredible natural beauty, has authentic destinations and provides unique experiences, including its wineries,” says Lorenz.

An even more unexpected winegrowing region is New Mexico, but its arid climate has not discouraged serious winemakers. The Gruet family began producing Champagne in France in 1952, but took a gamble on the Land of Enchantment in the distant American Southwest. After initially acquiring property near the colorfully named town of Truth or Consequences in 1983, the Gruets ultimately expanded their vineyards to approximately 400 planted acres. The winery creates exceptional sparkling wines from its own grapes in the traditional méthode champenoise used in France.

“The sandy loam soils, rich with magnesium, are perfect for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the principal grapes used in producing high-quality Champagne,” explains winemaker Cyril Tanazacq. New Mexico is far removed from France’s renowned sparkling wine region, but the winemaker immediately recognized some commonalities. “While the soil type in Champagne, France, where I’m from, may be different, the principles surrounding

good drainage and positioning towards the sun are similar in both terroirs,” he says. What makes Gruet Winery’s achievements so remarkable is that some of its New Mexico vineyards are at extremely high elevations — several thousand feet higher than France’s most acclaimed Champagne properties. One of more than 20 wineries showcased on the New Mexico Wine Trail, Gruet operates tasting rooms in both Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

In the Pacific Northwest, Oregon tends to dominate the discussion on wine, but Italian immigrants began planting wine grapes across the border in Washington’s Walla Walla Valley in the 1800s. Now, some 120 wineries produce a wide range of varietals, including Albariño, Nebbiolo and Sémillon. Luxurious accommodations are found at The Marcus Whitman, an historic hotel offering fine dining and wine tours in a chauffeured Rolls-Royce. Many major metropolitan areas lie unexpectedly close to wine country. Baltimore residents can follow Maryland’s Chesapeake Wine Trail, and even bourbon whiskey-crazed Louisville has an expanding number of Kentucky wineries just outside the city limits. Up-and-coming Texas Tempranillo is produced close to Austin, and the award-winning wine list at Phoenix’s historic Wrigley Mansion dedicates an entire section to Arizona wines.

Solar Opposites

Inplanning leisure activities, Americans rarely deviate from familiar seasons, resulting in ski vacations in January, watersports in July and road trips through autumn foliage in October. But exploring the “solar opposites” that await in the Southern Hemisphere — when Boston is buried in snow, summertime glistens in Santiago and Sydney — allows adventurous travelers to literally flip the calendar.

Award-winning outdoor journalist John Clary Davies, former editor at Powder magazine, insists the skiing in South America’s Andes Mountains — the prime season runs from June to October — rivals the Alps and Rockies. “Skiing in the Alps is incredible. The Rockies are truly magnificent. And the Andes are inimitable,” he says. Davies, who believes there is no more exhilarating way to explore new cultures than on skis, comments, “Chilean and Argentinian ski culture is entirely its own, and when it comes to adventure and beauty, the Andes stand up to any mountain range in the world.”

Davies suggests Portillo, in the Valparaíso region, is the resort with the best amenities, but his favorite Chilean destination is Nevados de Chillán, which also offers awesome backcountry skiing and ski-touring near the top of a volcano. “There’s a fun nightlife scene, and skiers take breaks in natural hot springs…It doesn’t get much better than that,” reports Davies.

According to the journalist, the Andes have already been discovered by diehard skiers from North America. “Whenever I’ve been, there’s always a solid representation of Americans who’ve made the voyage,” says Davies, who considers it a rite of passage for any serious skier. A downside to the Andes is the harsh, relentless weather, and that the region can be plagued by low-snow years. Always the optimist, Davies muses, “The good news is that when the weather’s unbearable, you still get to hang with mountain-loving South Americans…Pisco sours, anyone?”

While their mountain summits may not be

as majestic, other worldclass ski destinations can be found throughout the Southern Hemisphere. In summer, when stateside ski resorts are overtaken by hikers and mountain bikers, skiers craving fresh powder can head south to Perisher in Australia, Cragieburn Valley in New Zealand or Tiffindell in South Africa.

For most Americans, Australia evokes images of surfing and trekking through the outback, but skiing Down Under is a popular activity from June through October, varying by location. Most resorts are located in the Australian Alps between Sydney and Melbourne, where mountain peaks reach approximately 7,000 feet — modest by European Alps or Rocky Mountain standards, but more than adequate for generating a major downhill rush.

Thredbo, located in New South Wales six hours from Sydney, is popular for its long runs and its Supertrail is, in fact, Australia’s longest ski run at a full 3.7 miles. The largest ski resort in the country is Perisher, also in New South Wales,

with nearly 3,000 acres of skiable terrain. Because Perisher is operated by Colorado-based Vail Resorts, American skiers holding Vail’s Epic Pass can ski for free there, as well as at the Falls Creek and Hotham resorts in the Australian state of Victoria.

“Skiing in Australia on its best day is as good as anywhere else in the world,” insists Stuart Diver, general manager of Thredbo. He suggests the terrain and snow conditions are comparable to acclaimed overseas resorts, albeit slightly smaller in scale than premier European and North American destinations. “Skiing through the native snow gums [a variety of eucalyptus tree] is an experience offered nowhere else,” says the manager.

In terms of amenities, Diver believes Thredbo compares favorably with Northern Hemisphere resorts, stating, “We have worldclass accommodations coupled with great food and beverage, as well as retail opportunities.” In addition to high-speed chair lifts, Thredbo offers a newly installed eight-person gondola, and Diver

reports, “State-of-the-art snowmaking systems add to the natural snow falls to make our Australian skiing a very memorable experience.” Founded in 1956, Thredbo is older than many American resorts, and increasing numbers of Northern Hemisphere skiers and snowboarders looking for an “off-season” fix are discovering Australia.

No resort city in South America represents the continent’s allure more than Punta del Este, a short drive from Uruguay’s capital city of Montevideo. The glamorous retreat referred to as “Monaco of the South” is just beginning to attract jet-setting Northern Hemisphere tourists escaping their own frigid winters. Late December and early January (summertime) is considered peak season here, when the population of the small coastal town explodes to more than 400,000.

Punta del Este visitors soak up rays at Brava Beach, where “La Mano” — a sculpture of giant concrete fingers reaching through the sand, created by Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal — is particularly Instagrammable. Travel journalist Laura Itzkowitz, who has written about the destination for Departures and Architectural Digest, reports, “Punta del Este is the gateway to Uruguay’s Maldonado department, home to boho-chic beach enclaves like José Ignacio and hill towns like Garzón, where acclaimed chef Francis Mallmann runs a restaurant.” Regarding its draw, the writer observes, “It has been frequented by wealthy South Americans — especially Porteños [residents of Buenos Aires] — for decades, but it’s been a bit slower to come onto the radar of North Americans and Europeans.”

“The resort city has often been called the ‘Hamptons of South America’ because of the way wealthy Argentines and Uruguayans flock there during the summer months,” says Itzkowitz, but notes the overdevelopment of Punta del Este has led to the emergence of new exclusive colonies. “The chicest crowd has largely decamped to José Ignacio, 40 minutes east of Punta del Este, which still retains a laid-back Montauk-like quality,” she states. Luxury hotels in the area range from beachside Il Belvedere in Punta del Este to Estancia Vik, a ranch-style property on more than 4,000 acres in José Ignacio.

Virginia Sanchez, team leader at Keller Williams Uruguay and specialist in the Punta del Este real estate market, reports, “Between people from Montevideo and Argentina to foreigners from around the world, many people are looking for the laid-back, close-to-nature lifestyle offered by Punta del Este.” Sprawling vacation homes in

Punta del Este and José Ignacio, featuring both traditional and modern architecture, regularly exceed $5 million in price, reflecting demand for exclusive resort properties.

Sanchez indicates the Punta del Este market was not negatively impacted by the pandemic and is currently robust. “Like never before, we’re seeing people interested not only in vacation or second homes, but actually looking for primary residences,” she says. For prospective permanent residents, Sanchez notes Uruguayans are known for being warm and welcoming to outsiders, and that affordable healthcare, reliable banking and a safe environment are major draws.

The KW representative suggests that Punta del Este’s miles of pristine beaches, waterfront dining and sailing have universal appeal, but that the inland lifestyle is equally attractive. “Just a few miles away, the countryside offers a slower pace, with green fields filled with cattle and touristic ranches offering wine tasting, horseback riding and the best asado [barbecue] in the world,” says Sanchez,” who reports the locals are famous for their friendly gaucho [cowboy] culture. Indicating U.S. dollars are widely accepted, including for real estate transactions, Sanchez states, “Punta del Este has long been a favorite destination for wealthy and famous people, but it’s also within reach of anyone to enjoy.”

Wine enthusiasts usually venture to California, Tuscany or Bordeaux during the Northern Hemisphere’s fall season, when the heat has moderated, colors of the vineyards are glorious and the excitement of the harvest is infectious. In winegrowing nations of the Southern Hemisphere — Chile, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, as well as underappreciated Uruguay and Brazil — fall offers those very qualities, except that it occurs between February and April, depending on the region.

Wine and travel writer Amanda Barnes, a leading authority on South American wines and author of a comprehensive volume, The South America Wine Guide, reports that the harvest is a particularly rewarding time for wine lovers to visit the continent. “There’s a buzz in the air, the vines are laden with juicy fruit and even though it’s time for hard work, it’s also a time when the locals play hard,” says Barnes. The journalist adds, “There are plenty of parties, music festivals and cultural events. This is the moment to catch harvest, but also some tango, classical music and carnival.”

The Colchagua Valley, two hours south of Santiago, is regarded as Chile’s counterpart to Bordeaux or Napa. The region offers some remarkable hotels in which to experience the wine country, and one of the most exclusive

is Vik Chile. Hardly a quaint hacienda, its accommodations include 22 luxury suites beneath a curvilinear titanium roof and seven glass-sheathed bungalows overlooking the vineyards. The resort maintains a multimilliondollar art collection and world-class gastronomy permeates not only its dining rooms, but also barbecue and picnic venues.

Convenient to Cape Town International Airport, but in the heart of South Africa’s scenic wine country, is the Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa. General manager Urs Kern reports, “To celebrate and highlight the rich history of the original historic farm and buildings, we’ve created the ‘Taste the Heart of the Helderberg’ experience,” referring to a unique wine country gastronomic tour. It includes wine, olive oil, chocolate, coffee, beer, and gin tastings at the estates that comprised the original 17th century landholding on which the resort is situated.

Speaking of South Africa, Northern Hemisphere residents should be reminded that prime beach season in Cape Town is approximately December through February, just when North Americans and Europeans are desperate for sun. Similarly, surfing on Australia’s storied Gold Coast is ideal in February and March, when the waters off Southern California are frigid by comparison.
