This summer issue is full of all the things I love about this season: waterfront, whimsy and wonder. As someone lucky enough to grow up by the beach, there are so many things that trigger a fond memory or feeling for me. In my humble opinion, ice cream never tastes better than with a few grains of sand in it, even the most modest home near the ocean has a breathtaking view, and the sun down the shore seems extra warm and soul reviving. Life by the water is just a completely different, wonderful world. It’s instantly calming, and, transports me — and so many others — immediately to a restorative, sought-after place.
My team either knows me too well, or has very similar sentiments on waterfront living, as they seemingly pulled inspiration from all that I love, combing the luxury realm to find a decidedly “unique” version of many of my favorite things. In addition, the destination also encompasses a collection of spaces sustainably restored in 2021. Architectural firm Mithun, landscape design studio TERREMOTO, and interior design firm The Office of Charles de Lisle, helped breathe new life into the property. “A visit to Sea Ranch is whatever you want to make of it,” Jetton says. Proximity to the water has always been a top selling point in luxury real estate. These desirable areas with beach access and water views may have started out small, but the demand for waterfront property made a habit of transforming these towns into booming tourist destinations with limited inventory. Today, lake and riverfront homes are gaining the attention they deserve. According to Savannah CEO, the market for lake homes and lots in Georgia saw a 30-percent increase in the summer of 2024.

Much has changed across the real estate landscape over the last decade. Yet, as Prestige magazine celebrates this landmark anniversary, the concept of home as a treasured retreat continues to dominate purchasing decisions in the global luxury property market. Since its inception in 2014, both print and digital editions of Prestige have garnered a diverse, affluent audience. Published three times a year, the magazine celebrates luxury living with unique editorial content while showcasing unforgettable properties across the globe.
Global Luxury Reveal
“When I joined Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices in the winter of 2013, the brand’s Luxury Collection was just starting to build and I felt there would be value for our network agents and their clients in creating a global luxury lifestyle magazine that spoke to a broad audience featuring topics about people, places, and homes,” recalls Wendy Durand, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Senior Vice President of Global Marketing and Communications.
“As the first issue was unveiled, it was all fear and joy presenting a publication so bold and beautiful filled with exquisite properties, editorial content, and images that would take our readers on a global journey,” Durand confides. The team at Unique Homes Media, Inc. (Prestige’s custom publisher) collaborated closely with Durand to understand the intended targeted global reach.
“From our first issue, we knew we needed rich content to appeal to audiences from around the world. Our very first feature was on the World Cup in Brazil,” says Durand.
Before we could publish, we needed a name. What’s in a name is a key to the product’s success. “We brainstormed with the publisher of Unique Homes Media, Inc. on a name for the magazine. We wanted one that stood for respect and what we hoped would become a much-admired publication,” Durand says. Today Prestige is distributed in Delta Sky Clubs across 37 major U.S. airports and each issue currently has a print run of 50,000 copies.
The variety of rich editorial content consistently featured in Prestige has informed and transported readers around the world. “We decided every issue would have a feature on a different country,” Durand notes. Previous travel features have explored Dubai’s Rich History, AmazingIndia, and The Allure of Alaska, defining the best resorts, dining adventures, and off-the-beaten-path cultural activities.
The publication also does a deep dive into luxury market trends that buyers and sellers appreciate, with articles such as Homes With Iconic Views, Adventures At Your Front Door, and CountryLifeAtItsFinest. In-depth profiles of internationally recognized architects and interior designers take Prestige’s audience behind the scenes of impeccable homes and estates, while worldclass chefs and restaurateurs around the globe share their journey to five-star reviews.
As Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices’ network expanded to include premier global locations, such as India, the United Arab Emirates, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, Canada, Mexico, Aruba, the Cayman Islands, the Bahamas, and the United Kingdom, the magazine did as well. Prestige’s new look was revealed in the Spring 2022 issue. “With its elevated appearance, the new Prestige will bring fresh perspectives and a knowledgeable voice to the trends and topics that matter most to our readers,” said Gino Blefari, Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, in his welcome letter.
The business model for luxury lifestyle magazines has continued to evolve and now includes a stronger digital presence. It became clear that reaching a more diverse audience online was key to the publication’s ongoing success, and so was Prestige’s compelling content. “Laura Obagi [Vice President of Global Marketing and Communications] has elevated our editorial focus,” Durand observes. “She understands exactly what our audiences are excited to read. She executes that knowledge by leading our editorial team to create unique features and signature sections where people get lost in the stories and share them on social media.”
Partnering with Prestige
The company’s network of luxury agents who market their personal brand and exclusive properties in Prestige attest to the publication’s reach and impact. Michael Slevin, President of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Colorado Properties, was one of the first affiliates to advertise in the magazine. “We were thrilled at the opportunity Prestige created to reach many second homeowners outside of Colorado,” Slevin recalls. Ten years later, this component has become a most important piece in Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Colorado Properties’ overall marketing efforts. “All our brokers love Prestige’s elevated style and the targeted distribution network. It is a great listing tool, as homeowners choose us over our competitors because of the exposure their homes receive in Prestige,” Slevin adds.

Expanding Prestige’s Digital Footprint
Due to the exceptionally strong distribution network from the start, Prestige quickly grew its audience. It is now digitally shared with the entire Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices network of more than 50,000 global real estate professionals. The digital edition is also featured on the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices website, drawing more than 16 million visitors in 2023. In addition, Prestige is inserted into both print and digital issues of UniqueHomes magazine, resulting in a 100,000-plus added readership.
Kathleen Carlin-Russell, Publisher/Editor-inChief at Unique Homes Media, Inc. dives into Prestige’s trajectory. “One thing that jumps out at me about the 10 years of Prestige is the growth in the size of the magazine. Between 2014-2024, while many other print publications were shrinking, or perhaps even going out of business, over that same period, Prestige more than doubled in size. New Mexico is fast becoming a popular destination to not only explore, but to call home. Wine-inspired tourism is sweeping the globe, and acclaimed architects have been deployed to create spectacular new wineries to meet demand.
Wineries are no longer rustic facilities solely engaged in the production of an agricultural product, but sophisticated hospitality venues competing for tourists. Around the world, contemporary architects are reimagining wineries and enthralling visitors without compromising the bucolic wine country ambiance.
Napa Valley is as much a playground for luxury travelers as a winegrowing region, meaning it is no surprise that the destination showcases architecture that rivals its celebrated wines. Juancarlos Fernandez, partner at Signum, a local firm acclaimed for its winery designs, recounts an early opportunity to introduce a contemporary aesthetic. Fernandez explains, “The client advised us, ‘We have a lot of barns in the Valley, so let’s do something different,’ and for the tasting room, they preferred something more like an intimate living room.”
Signum’s wine country projects are known for bold architectural statements, but their visual and environmental impacts on the idyllic countryside are tempered, with some structures literally woven into rolling vineyards. In Napa Valley, the integration of rust-colored steel posts salvaged from vineyards ingeniously connects the Progeny Winery hospitality center to the land. Not far away, a wine cave at Odette Estate Winery is sustainably ensconced beneath a hillside, but the entrance presents a graceful, elegant expression. Other dramatic wine properties designed by Signum include Artesa Vineyards & Winery in Napa and Aperture Cellars in Sonoma Valley. “We try to bring a uniqueness to our projects, and in some cases, our sketches have actually evolved into the winery’s logo and label,” says Fernandez, citing Odette as one example.
The Marqués de Riscal winery and hotel shatters the old-school image of Rioja, Spain’s ancient winegrowing region. Its curvaceous ribbons of titanium are instantly recognizable as the signature of architect Frank Gehry—à
la L.A.’s Disney Concert Hall or Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum—but with dramatic splashes of wine country color. Acknowledging that New World winegrowing regions introduced the concept of oenotourism, Marqués de Riscal president Alejandro Aznar reports, “We had the idea to complement the beautiful wines we were producing with an iconic building…” Gehry said of the project, “I wanted to design something exciting and festive, because wine is pleasure.”
Several years before Gehry arrived, celebrity Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava was reimagining Rioja at Bodegas Ysios. With its wavy, soaring roofline, the structure could be mistaken for an avant-garde cathedral, but here the vines are worshiped.
In Italy, the Antinori family has been making wine for more than 600 years, but the Antinori nel Chianti Classico winery in Tuscany is a modern marvel promoting sustainability. Designed by Marco Casamonti, it is built into the earth, but the architecture—both above and below ground—features bold, contemporary aesthetics. Also in Tuscany, Petra Winery, courtesy of Swiss architect Mario Botta, is an unabashedly modern structure towering above surrounding vineyards with the drama of an ancient Roman monument, including a 141-step staircase ascending its circular edifice.
“A rational design that highlights the measure, beauty, and depth of the landscape,” is how Botta portrays his design. Jeanette Servidio, general manager of Petra, suggests worldclass architecture must not compromise the efficient operation of a winery. “Early planning is essential, so that great architecture and wine processing can coexist at their best,” she says. “Once all these aspects are clear, and the architecture adapts to the winery’s processing needs, the visit to the cellar can become a memorable experience,” adds Servidio.
For its Tenuta Castelbuono estate in Italy’s picturesque Umbria region, the Lunelli family commissioned sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro to create an otherworldly copper-clad dome, which appears unexpectedly on the horizon.
Alessandro Lunelli says of the structure, “It’s actually the first sculpture in the world in which one lives and works, a unique project in which art and nature, sculpture and wine speak together.”

Contemporary glassblowers, creating incredible works of art through a fiery, primeval medium, are helping to reshape luxury residential interiors.
Glassblowing, an art form that literally emerges from flames, has produced exquisite tableware, lighting, and objets d’art for approximately 2,000 years. Today, contemporary artisans hardly deviate from ancient techniques, yet they are pushing the limits of invention and finding new admirers among interior designers and luxury homeowners along the way.
Los Angeles Glassblowing partners with architects, interior designers, and art advisors to bring stunning glass art into the home. Specialties of founder Jim Embrescia include enormous custom-designed chandeliers, as well as vibrant, backlit wall installations that provide a wow factor in luxury residences. “Outside of it becoming a career path, there’s a meditative side to glassblowing, almost like a daily tai chi practice,” says Embrescia, who has artfully manipulated molten glass for nearly 30 years.
Tullman reports that increased access to studio space and television exposure (notably the Netflix series BlownAway) are fostering greater interest in the medium. Among the unique glass artworks that he has created are massive wall-mounted sharks, octopi, and stingrays in electrifying colors. Reporting increased demand for glass installations in luxury residences, the artist states, “I love to create beautiful glass objects that bring spaces to life.” Tullman is currently working on an installation at Chicago’s Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, comprised of 200 glass butterflies suspended from the ceiling.
“Some clients insist on something awesome, but don’t know exactly what they want,” says Embrescia, reporting others are inspired by the work of celebrity glass artist, Dale Chihuly. “I act as their muse, and together we come up with a completely original concept that we can bring to life,” he explains. While many clients, particularly fans of Chihuly’s work, instinctively gravitate to bold colors, Embrescia suggests that some of the most refined, sophisticated pieces can be achieved with clear glass.
Chicago has a community known for its rich history in glassblowing, for both decorative and industrial products. The city’s Ignite Glass Studios provides a space for artisans to create and share their work, from students to museum-exhibited artists. Co-founder and creative director Ben Tullman says of his introduction to glassblowing, “When I first held 2,000-degree molten glass in my hands as a teenager, it was a magical feeling.” He adds, “Glass is a seductive and mysterious material, simultaneously strong and fragile, solid and transparent.”
Asheville, North Carolina, is famous for its creative spirit, and among its many artisans is glassblower Asher Holman, who was first introduced to the medium at age 16, and has been glassblowing professionally for seven years. His Small Batch Glass generates a wide range of products for the home, from stunning pendant lighting to unique topographic rock wall installations that infuse a space with color and whimsy. “Glass is a really amazing material and it’s mesmerizing to watch people work with it over an intense fire,” says the owner/artist, whose own studio in Asheville is open to the public.
“Large glass pieces have the potential to add a super-unique aspect to any residential space,” says Holman of his large-scale installations, which resonate among owners of modern luxury homes. The artist reports that his rock wall creations are particularly valued by homeowners seeking a dramatic effect, but something more distinctive than the plates or flowers offered by other studios. At Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit, a dedicated detox concierge plays a crucial role in personally connecting with the resort’s guests to help them disconnect from their devices. “Upon guests’ arrival, this specialized concierge ensures a truly immersive detox by transforming their suite,” explains Juan Ruiz, Vice President of Velas Resorts. “The concierge removes the flatscreen television and replaces it with classic board games, setting the stage for a screenfree stay. Guests’ electronic devices, including phones, laptops, iPads, and PSPs, are then securely stored away, allowing guests to fully disconnect and unwind in a tech-free environment.”
At Grand Velas Riviera Maya, guests can participate in a similar program by trading in their phones for complimentary activities. Upon check-in, guests receive a bracelet in exchange for their electronics, which grants them access to activities such as bike tours, an eco-tour of the property’s flora and fauna, a snorkeling tour, or the Water Journey at SE Spa. To retrieve their electronics, guests must earn a total of four activity bracelets (one for each day) by participating in these activities. “At both resorts, the Digital Detox program aims to create a sanctuary where guests can disconnect from screens and reconnect with each other and nature,” Ruiz said.

White Wolf’s experienced private guides escort people where there’s no cell service. “Our guests experience the tour the right way. Since we tell them, ‘Let’s not use our phones for a couple of days,’ they soon realize that maybe their email isn’t as important as they thought,” confides Dylan Gallagher of White Wolf Tours.
Trekkers will see El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil all without digital distractions. However, guides do carry an emergency beacon on these tech-free journeys. “People come to realize what’s important in life, and it’s not on their phones,” Gallagher notes.

London is truly a city suited for royalty. This bustling metropolis is brimming with the finest dining options, luxurious hotels and spas, and plenty of high-end entertainment for visitors and permanent residents alike. With so much to do, the 32 boroughs and vibrant streets that make up Greater London can be overwhelming at a glance. Thankfully, Martin Bikhit, Owner and Managing Director of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices London has offered a few choice recommendations to guide the way.
Dine
The London dining scene goes above and beyond traditional high tea and fish and chips. According to Bikhit, the must-try destinations include Scott’s for seafood and China Tang at The Dorchester for Peking duck rolls.
“With three Michelin stars, Hélène Darroze at The Connaught—Carlos Place has a tasting menu to die for,” he says, adding that he also frequents Kyubi at The Arts Club. “It’s the best Japanese in London, in my opinion, and the only place in Europe with saké on tap. It’s run by Zuma’s ex-head chef, Soon Li Ong, and I eat there as often as I can.”
Whether you’re planning a short stay or a lengthy repose, Bikhit recommends The Peninsula Hotel, for its “fantastic themed restaurant and bar on the top floor with panoramic views.” A more historic option would be The OWO, “the former war office of the British government that recently opened as a hotel, spa, and luxury residences by Raffles Hotels.”

Beyond the many sights and historical landmarks, there are endless options for entertainment in London. According to Bikhit, the Royal Albert Hall and Royal Opera House are ideal for concerts. Homeowners have become more specific in customizing the overall feel and function of their homes, and much of that can be explained by technology and social media. “When I started over 30 years ago, clients went to designers for a ‘look’ and let the professionals do their thing,” says Arkansas designer Chris Goddard. Today, clients are far more knowledgeable about what they want in the long run, versus what’s trending. “The major role of designers today is to pull the client's ideas into a cohesive vision,” adds Goddard. “I love the fact that today’s clients are not sheep following the latest design fad and really want to personalize their spaces and make it their own.”
As the value and proportions of a home increase, so does the degree of customization. “At a certain price point,” says Lisa Adams of LA Closet Design, “it’s custom everything.” Grubb similarly remarks, “With all of the choices on the market, I find people are able to embrace their personal style and not feel like they have to follow a fad.”

On technology in the luxury realm, Alejandro Bonet, managing partner of LD&D, a design and development firm, says, “I think information travels a lot quicker. And it's a lot easier. So, everyone has access to everything at any given second.”

Michael Gutwaks, president of Maya Romanoff, further adds that focusing on materials rather than trends keeps the collections relevant in today’s luxury scene. “Timeless fashion and the use of natural materials inherently inspire our designs and how we express that through our collections. It’s about how our wallcoverings synergize with other elements in the room,” explains Gutwaks.

Fashion and interiors have a long-entwined harmony, usually following parallel paths. It’s not unusual for looks on the runway to eventually find their way into interiors. This particularly relates to colors. But the advent of venues that immerse shoppers and guests into a brand’s experience is turning that traditional synchrony on end. Perhaps one of the country's most beloved lakes, Lake Tahoe, continues to impress and is even featured on the cover of this issue, with a landmark waterfront listing. Shayla Hope, director of sales at IMI Worldwide Properties says about Lake Tahoe, “The proximity to major cities and easy access to Napa Valley and the Bay Area appeal to a diverse group of potential buyers seeking a blend of luxury, convenience, and natural beauty. The View and More
The view from a luxury home is often one of the most important boxes to check for buyers. “We have definitely noticed an increase in requests for ocean views in all price ranges,” says Terry Niemann, director of sales and marketing, and broker at Terranea Real Estate. “Many of the homes in the area are close to the water, or have quick access to the beach, but having an actual ocean view from one’s home now seems to be at the top of many wish lists.” The ultimate find in waterfront properties is the coveted east and
west views. Niemann says the peninsula’s unique geography where Terranea Resort is located allows views of beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Stunning views are a major draw, but today, buyers are also looking for added benefits. For example, in Nevada, “Buyers may be surprised by the state’s tax advantages, including no state income tax, corporate income tax, estate or gift tax, and inheritance tax,” says Hope. “This makes The Tahoe Beach Club particularly appealing for those looking to invest in a second home or relocate to a tax-friendly environment.” Although Nevada is a landlocked state, there are approximately 200 lakes and over 600 rivers and streams that provide waterfront opportunities.
