HOME-GOING CELEBRATION Taits Church Long lsland, The Bahamas Taits Catholic Church Cemetery Rev. Kendrick J. Forbes Thursday August 25, 2022

“Mama”

Bargain, Long Mama, as we As the eldest child she assisted her mother in household chores and caring for her siblings One of her fondest memories as a young child was when she prepared a meal for the entire family because she noticed that her parents were late in returning home from the farm. To her parents’ astonishment, as they ate, she meticulously described each step she took

to prepare the meal In the months thereafter, she continued to demonstrated initiative, ingenuity, and intelligence, well beyond her years So much so that her parents were compelled to enroll her at Roses All Age School She went to school at age 8 and spoke proudly of her time there She was most excited about the formal education she received and the opportunities she had to assist the teacher with lessons After four years, she had to leave school to assist her parents with the household and farmland, Aa was customary in those days

As the years progressed Mama blossomed into a beautiful, resourceful, and principled young woman. She was soon courted by Reuben “Big Boy” Cartwright from South Long Island. While he was on “the contract” the two continued to exchange letters from afar. In him she found a potential companion who respected her, admired her resourcefulness, and appreciated her no nonsense persona. Eager to marry her, Big Boy proposed that they marry and move to his parents’ home temporarily. Her response was “I already living in my Pa house, what I ga leave here and go live in yours for?”. With that admonition, Big Boy was motivated to accelerate the building of what would be the family homestead in Berry’s, and within a year, the two were wed

Mama spoke fondly of their wedding which took place on August 12, 1954. Big Boy bought her two dresses, one for the ceremony and one for afterwards, and the

celebration with family and friends lasted four glorious days. On the fifth day, they immediately began preparing their plot of land for the cultivation of crops and livestock. Their firstborn, Maxine (now deceased) and their second child Rosetta were toddlers when Big Boy had to leave the island again for employment under “the contract”. Mama was left to care for them and sustain the farming efforts they had begun. Life in South Long Island was extremely hard during those years, but Mama persevered through sheer will and unbending faith!

After a couple years harvesting crops from state to state in the US, Big Boy returned to Berry’s and he and Mama continued to expand and harvest their land And their family grew as well From their union came fourteen children, eight girls and six boys

Both Rosa and Big Boy valued education, hard work, and craftsmanship When the opportunity arose for their two eldest daughters (ages 12 and 10) to sit the entrance exam for St John’s College, they took advantage of it To their surprise, both girls passed and were offered a seat at the prestigious school located on New Providence. It was a huge sacrifice, which required Big Boy leaving again to ensure that the girls were taken care of while attending school.

Mama spoke often about having to take the younger children to the field, even as babies, because the work had to be done. When the children were old enough, they assisted with farming and household chores. She demonstrated the value of knowing your craft and of how hard work pays off.

For the better part of a decade, she rose well before sunrise to knead and bake bread in the “old kitchen”, to supplement the modest food available to the children for the day. Once the children were off to school, Mama would head to the field where she spent most of the day cultivating and harvesting a wide variety of crops, including peanuts, onions, potatoes, green peppers, beans, peas, limes, mangoes, and watermelons

Even though they didn’t have much, Mama was generous with the little they did have She assisted elderly relatives and members of the community who had no one No matter how far away they lived And she instilled that same compassion and goodwill in her children, often reminding us that we are our brother’s keeper No matter how hard things were, Mama still made a way She never gave up and she never complained.

She volunteered countless hours assisting the community, the church, the high school PTA, and numerous members of our extended family. She was a shining example of a community leader, without any of the official accolades or recognition. And she truly believed that if something is worth doing, it is worth doing right.

In 1982 Mama was diagnosed with uterine cancer, a battle that required her to leave her husband and children in order to receive treatment in the US. After months of treatments and infrequent communication with her family, the doctors informed her that the treatment was a success and that she could soon return home Upon her return Mama discovered that, sadly, several other women on the island succumbed to cancer And that sobering revelation motivated her even more to make a difference in the community Shortly after her return she ramped up her efforts within the community, while also farming full time with Big Boy, and raising her children

Mama always encouraged her children to support, in any way they could, the causes that she was involved in, no matter which island they lived on. At every Annual Church Bazaar, Red Cross Fair, Long Island Regatta, and PLP convention, Mama could be found working in the trenches, supporting efforts, and in many instances dropping perfectly rounded and tasty conch fritters. She was a woman who galvanized the community around worthwhile projects and initiatives. When the children of South Long Island had no way to get to NGM high school down north, Mama organized a walkathon to raise funds for a school bus The event was a rousing success, and the South Long Island community received its first school bus

As many people know, Mama was an excellent cook and could make a delicious meal out of the barest ingredients. There wasn’t a dish she couldn’t cook to perfection, including peas soup and dough, bean and grits, mutton, stew conch, or any type of souse. We will always remember the sugar cookies, coconut and benny cakes she made for us especially at Christmastime.

Many times, it was difficult to provide for such a large family, but Mama somehow made it work. We never went to bed hungry. And if a relative, friend, or stranger stopped by, Mama was still able to offer them a meal.

She was the only person we knew who could break a single Foxes mint into ten pieces so that each of the children could get a taste! Looking back now, even though she was a stern parent, she spoiled each of us in her own special way She spoiled Big Boy too Oftentimes as we waited for the church bus on a Sunday morn, she would pick a flower from the gardenia tree at our gate and pin it to his shirt

On days when she went to the packing house with produce or to the mail boat, she would return with a pint of milk or a soda, for us all to share She made the little that we got seem like so much more and in doing so taught us the virtue of gratitude.

Mama also exemplified a servant heart. For well over a decade, every Saturday Mama would walk from Berry’s to Hard Bargin to the old homestead to do laundry for her elderly mother Somehow, she was always able to wash all of the clothes and linens by hand, rinse, and hang each item on the line, walk back to Berry’s and still get home in time to cook supper for our family No matter how hard times got, Mama could still find humor and her dry wit could break the ice in any situation She had a saying for any situation, using the simplest analogy to instruct or correct. Mama was also an incredible storyteller and could weave a story in such a way that it made a person feel as though they were right there when it happened. When it was time for a celebration, it wasn’t a party until Mama showed up. One of her favorite ways of saying thank you was “when ya get married I ga dance to ya wedding”. And it was a promise she would always keep. Mama enjoyed life and treasured each opportunity to celebrate with family and friends.

As a devout Catholic, Mama made sure her children were grounded in the faith. She almost never missed a Sunday mass and was known for rousing church members in songs and hymns she knew by heart or playing the tambourine. Mama was a woman of faith. She believed in a power greater than herself. And it is that faith that carried her through over a decade of loss, beginning with the death of her first son Steven in 1996 in a boating accident. In 2002, one of her twin sons Bernard was reported lost at sea and never found. In November of the same year, her eldest daughter Maxcine also passed away. A few years later she lost her mother and in 2008 her husband Big Boy passed away In 2009, she also lost her grandson Brenton

Over the decades Mama went from having a full house of boisterous kids to enjoying the quiet solitude of her retired years, eventually the children left the homestead to seek employment opportunities on New Providence and Grand Bahama She continued to be community minded, supporting the Cancer Society, the Ladies Guild, staying active in church She enjoyed those years, and all the years that followed, even when she became less mobile She would usually still be found sitting outside plaiting, reading an almanac or her bible She often enjoyed entertaining the occasional friend or visiting her children on the various islands She travelled to other islands and to the US on numerous occasions to celebrate the birth of grandchildren and great grandchildren, high school and university graduations, weddings, and so much more

In her lifetime, Mama weathered several hurricanes, but the most harrowing of all was hurricane Joaquin in 2015. The island and the homestead suffered severe damage, but thankfully Mama and Susan (daughter) were left with no serious injuries. In years that followed Mama’s health declined significantly. Our family was forced to make the difficult decision to relocate her to Nassau and eventually to Grand Bahama where she lived and was cared for by her children and grandchildren until her passing on August 6th, 2022.

For if we have been united with Him by likeness to His death, so shall we be united with Him by likeness to His resurrection

LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READNG

Revelation 21:1 5a 6b

I, John, saw a new heaven and a new earth The former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more I also saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, & Behold, Gods dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and God himself will always be with

them (as their God) He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, for the old order has passed away & the one who sat on the throne said, & Behold, I make all things new. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give a gift from the spring of life giving water. The victor will inherit these gifts, and I shall be his God, and he will be my son The Word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM “The Lord’s my Shepherd”

The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want, He makes me down to lie In pastures green, he leadeth me The quiet waters by.

My soul he doth restore again, And me to walk doth make Within the paths of righteousness, E’en for his own name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale, Yet will I fear none ill, For thou art with me, and thy rod And staff me comfort still. My table thou has furnished In presence of my foes, My head thou dost with oil anoint, And my cup overflows. Goodness and mercy all my life Shall surely follow me, And in God’s house for evermore My dwelling place shall be.

SECOND READING ……………………………………………………………………………….……. 2 Timothy 4:6 8

A reading from The Second Letter of Paul to Timothy 6

For I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand I have competed well; I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance. The Word of the Lord!

People: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia!I am the Resurrection and the life, says the Lord; whoever believes in me will not die forever!

People: Amen.

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, The emblem of suffering and shame; And I love that old cross where the Dearest and Best For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Chorus:

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, Till my trophies at last I lay down. I will cling to the old rugged cross, And exchange it someday for a crown.

Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above To bear it to dark Calvary.

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, A wondrous beauty I see, For on that old cross Jesus suffered and died, To pardon and sanctify me.

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true; Its shame and reproach gladly bear; Then He’ll call me someday to my home far away, Where His glory forever I’ll share.

There will be a happy meeting in Heaven, I know When we see the many loved ones we’ve known here below Gathered on that blessed hilltop with hearts all aglow That will be a glad reunion day

Chorus: A glad day, a wonderful day, A glad day, a glorious day. There with all the holy angels and loved ones to stay That will be a glad reunion day

When we live a million years in that wonderful place, Basking in the love of Jesus, beholding His face. It will seem but just a moment of praising His grace That will be a glad reunion day.

There was a time I travelled A lonely sinful road Beneath a heavy burden bending low But now all things are different For Jesus took my load It’s alright now I’m His I know

Chorus: It’s alright now for I am in my Savior’s care It’s alright now my Savior hears and answers prayers He’ll walk beside me ‘til I climb the heavenly stair And everything is alright now

A down a lonely pathway Without a friend to guide I walked in sin a sorrow all alone ‘Tis Jesus came and found me And drew me to his side It’s alright now for I’m His own

No more in sin I wander No more in darkness roam

The Lord has placed my feet on higher ground Each day new heights I’m gaining My soul is nearing home It’s alright now I’m heaven bound

There’s a city of light Where there cometh no night ‘Tis a city of beauty untold; All my treasures are there And it’s beauty I’ll share; When I get to that City of Gold

Chorus: When I leave all trouble and care, I will say good morning up there; I will have great gladness untold, When I get to that City of Gold

There’s no sorrow up there In that city so fair And no sickness can enter I’m told; Shadows all would have flown, I will meet friends I’ve known When we get to that City of Gold

Won’t you go there with me

To the home of the free, Would you see Heaven’s beauty unfold; If you will, come along We will sing heaven’s song When I get to that City of Gold

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide

The darkness deepens Lord, with me abide When other helpers fail and comforts flee Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away Change and decay in all around I see O Thou who changest not, abide with me

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if Thou abide with me

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee In life, in death, o Lord, abide with me Abide with me, abide with me

Through all the changing scenes of life, in trouble and in joy, the praises of my God shall still my heart and tongue employ. Of his deliv'rance I will boast, till all that are distressed, from my example comfort take and lay their griefs to rest.

O magnify the LORD with me, exalt his holy name; when in distress to him I called, he to my rescue came. The hosts of God encamp around the dwellings of the just; deliv'rance he affords to all who in his promise trust.

O taste and see that he is good; experience will decide how blest are they, and only they who in the LORD confide. Fear him, you saints, and you will then have nothing else to fear; make serving him your sole delight, your wants shall be his care.

We, the family of the late ROSA LAGLORIA CARTWRIGHT would like to extend our deepest and sincerest gratitude to all the individuals who provided us with many expressions of love, kindness, support, and prayers that comforted us in this our time of bereavement . May God continue to bless, guide and keep each and every one of you.
