n a quiet corner of spectacular North Norfolk, the Long House makes a dramatic statement.
Designed by award-winning architects Sir Michael and Lady Patty Hopkins, the cutting-edge holiday home draws from the local vernacular while simultaneously presenting a property that is truly unique and very much of the modern day. The Long House is the latest project in the Living Architecture series, which aims to open the door on world class architecture to the general public. Here, visitors can not only experience what it is like to live, eat and sleep in a space designed by a leading architectural practice, but they can do so within a picturesque setting.
Richard Day, Living Architecture’s operations director, explains the social enterprise was the idea of writer and philosopher Alain de Botton. “He came up with the concept of creating very modern houses that people could actually spend time in,” he says. “As with all our properties, the Long House started with the site. We try to find an architect who will take this into consideration in the design of the building then we give them free rein.” He continues: “Hopkins Architects have been at the forefront of architecture since the 1970s and have done a lot of work in the county. They took inspiration from Norfolk barns in the area – in fact, the Long House is a
modern take on the barn.” References to the many agricultural buildings in the area can not only be seen in the shape and size of the building but also in the materials used. Flint walls have been crafted from stones from a quarry in Holt and vaulted ceilings reveal timber beams. Capacious rooms, a galleried landing and a wood-burning stove also echo features found in traditional barn conversions. “The gallery is really quite stunning. This is reminiscent of the award-winning Refectory at Norwich Cathedral, which was also designed by Hopkins Architects. There is a spiral staircase, which has

been clad in ash and blends with the whole gallery concept, drawing the eye right up.” Those staying at the house, which sleeps up to 10, enjoy an incredible feeling of space and light. The five double bedrooms – each with an en suite bathroom – and the open-plan living areas are bright and airy. “It has been designed on an east-west axis to catch the morning and the afternoon sun. Some traditional barns can be dark in places as they may be restricted as to where windows can be added. The Long House, however, has an incredible amount of glass.” Rows of windows on the upper level, and cleverly positioned sliding doors
below, serve not only to capture the green views but also to connect inner and outer spaces. Doors can be pulled back on to evening and morning courtyards to facilitate outdoor living. “The house is clearly wonderful in the summer when the weather is warm but in winter it can be incredible too,” says Richard. “Not only is there under-floor heating but the central wood-burner, positioned between the hall and the living area, is also wonderful.” The unique holiday property, which has been furnished in a modern, minimal style, is on the edge of the quiet village of Cockthorpe. It is within easy reach of Wells-next-the-Sea and Blakeney, in an area renowned for its beautiful beaches, bird-watching and fine dining.
“Cockthorpe itself is an incredibly tranquil location and is well-positioned for exploring other parts of Norfolk,” he adds. “The Long House is an exciting place to stay and if you are there with up to 10 people it really comes to life.”

“I have always been keen on imagery and spent endless hours drawing as a teenager. But it was being bought my first ever SLR camera in my 20s that opened up a whole new world for me – and when digital came of age I was hooked. “Living in the flat lands of East Anglia does present some challenges for anyone looking for that perfect scene. For several years I turned my camera towards people and worked as a wedding photographer – an area not for the faint hearted! Having put aside the wedding
photography for a while, however, I have since refocused my attention on the challenge of trying to present the landscape in a way the viewer hasn’t seen or appreciated before. “It is this aspect of photography in particular that I feel most keenly defines my work; that of trying to show the viewer something new about their surroundings that generally goes unseen. Like many landscape photographers, I value the golden hours at either end of the day, which
necessitate the use of slower shutter speeds in the dim light; this simple technique itself presents a world the human eye cannot see. I wouldn’t say I’m a purist when it comes to photographic technique, but I do try to create images that are as natural as possible, without relying too much on oversaturation. “Having spent most of my life in the centre of the region, I have really appreciated being closer to the sea these last few years, and there is
UniquelyAwayAutumn2013#AW:Layout 1 27/10/2015 18:39 Page 13
UNIQUELY AWAY AUTUMN 2013
nothing more invigorating to me than to be alone on a beach at some unearthly hour with only the sound of the birds and the sea for company. The knowledge that I am witnessing something generally unseen or appreciated, is what singularly drives me to take pictures. “For me, Norfolk offers the best seascape locations, and of course boasts one of the only coastlines on the eastern side of the UK that experiences a sunset over the sea. Suffolk has a little more of
a rolling landscape, and is where I am currently spending most of my time. “As a member of the Guild of Photographers I was extremely pleased that a much coveted Gold Bar has recently been added to my collection of awards, which has inspired me to consider organising an exhibition some time in 2014. “In addition to that, I look forward to the shorter days, which offer so much more for the intrepid photographer
willing to climb out of bed and head out into the cold. The colours of autumn are a particular draw for me and as long as you are prepared, wrapped up warm and take a lens cloth to keep the condensation away, this time of year can be hugely satisfying.” For more information on Julian’s work call 07889 824835, visit www.jrmgallery.co.uk or email info@jrmgallery.co.uk

Gallery owner and artist, Karen SJ Keable, said both Raymond and Tessa were relative newcomers to the gallery. “They have only been with us for a year or two but in that short time they have proven very popular with our customers. They are both very respected and accomplished local artists, producing quality works of art,” she says.
“Raymond is a master in oils, capturing impressionistic scenes with his bold strokes of colour and light,” says Karen. “Tessa paints beautiful, detailed, colourful still life to grace any wall.”
Great Yarmouth-born Raymond has won numerous awards, and has been a finalist in the Singer Friedlander Watercolour Competition and is a Not the Turner Prize winner. Tessa’s first career was as a children’s book illustrator, working for such publishing

“From about the age of 10, I knew I wanted to work with wood,” says Derrick, who was born in Suffolk but grew up in Norfolk. “Even before that I used to love playing with it but at that age I had my first tools.” After studying the subject at college, Derrick worked full-time with experienced furniture-makers and restorers before striking out on his own in 2000. “I have just always had a natural draw to wood,” he says. “Working with it has always felt right and has given me that feeling of doing something meaningful as well as satisfying.” Initially he worked in a more traditional style, creating pieces with a period feel but today most of his work has a sleek, modern design.

“My furniture tends to have clean lines, allowing the grain of the timber to show through. I mainly use native or European hardwood. I particularly like Elm and English walnut. “I do all the designs myself, working closely to what a client has asked for. Although I would never describe myself as an artist, there is an artistic element to what I do.” Derrick, who has a Bespoke Guild Mark and won the coveted furniture makers’ Claxton Stevens Award, exhibits his pieces regularly. His next exhibition will be at Interiors UK, at the NEC, in Birmingham, from Sunday 19 January to Wednesday 22 January 2014.
Jeremy Barlow
His work is exhibited at galleries in Saxlingham and Holt, alongside that of other contemporary artists, including Bob Richardson, Peter Graham and Susan Bower.
“North Norfolk is a wonderful place to paint. I can go to places like Burnham Overy Staithe and Cley every day and they will never be the same – every 10 minutes the weather or the light can change and there will be something new to paint.”
“We all have our own styles and really we have ever-changing exhibitions here,” he explains. “Much of the work is mine. I always spend some time away, travelling and painting abroad and then I come home to finish my work and exhibit it.”
In contrast, Jeremy is also drawn to the radiant skies and relaxed outdoor life of the Mediterranean. His studies of busy boulevard cafés, weathered and intriguing shop fronts, quiet provincial villages, and historical cities are vibrant and atmospheric.
Jeremy, whose work is represented in public, private and corporate collections worldwide, studied at Northampton School of Art. He has exhibited at many major venues including the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Royal Society of British Artists.
Today he is an elected member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI). In 1994 and 2000, he won the Stanley Grimm Prize, and, in 1999, he was given the Alan Gourlay Memorial Prize at the Annual ROI Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, in London.
“I like the variety of what I do – I will make anything from a jewellery box up to a whole kitchen or study,” he says. “People appreciate the beauty of owning a bespoke piece of furniture. Not only is it different to look at and to touch but it is very satisfying knowing you have something that is one-off.”

Throughout the rest of the autumn, however, and indeed into next year, examples of his work can still be seen at the space in Lyles Court, Lees Yard.
Acclaimed contemporary artists who exhibit at the space include Robert Greenhalf, who will be mounting an exhibition from Saturday 12 October to Wednesday 6 November.
odern and contemporary British art is the focus of Bircham Gallery, on Market Place, Holt.
One of the country’s leading wildlife and landscape artists, Robert is known for his woodcuts, watercolours and oils. He is a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists and Royal Society of British Artists, and has exhibited in Switzerland, Holland and the US, as well as across the UK.
Robert Heindel
Gallery owner Colin Rawlings was a friend of the artist, who died in 2008, and exhibited his work when he had a gallery in London. In this exhibition he will be mounting 10 original pieces, as well as a selection of silk screens. “We do have a reputation for figurative painting here and Robert Heindel was known for his work with the world of dance, with classic and contemporary ballet, in particular,” he says. “He came to Europe in the 1980s with his fine art

and developed his technique by working with the ballet.” Among others, he was invited to work with the Royal Ballet in London and his painting of artistic director Sir Frederick Ashton now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. Over the years, among the notable performers he painted were Darcey Bussell, Anthony Dowell, Viviana Durante, Irek Mukhamedov, Michael Crawford and Elaine Paige.
Robert enjoys capturing his images of animals in their own environment.
“Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber invited him to paint and sketch impressions from the musical theatre productions of Cats and the Phantom of The Opera, and he painted the Barricade Scene from Les Miserables for Sir Cameron Mackintosh,” Colin adds. “He was also named by Princess Diana as her favourite artist.”

“It is very easy to forget the village is actually a merging of two distinct settlements, Burnham Westgate, round the Greens, and Burnham Ulph, closer to the River Burn. “Ulph is the earlier of the two, and the gallery, on Overy Road, is in one of the oldest buildings remaining. St Andrew’s, one of the earliest churches, is now long since gone.” With a loyal and growing following, more than 20,000 visitors have visited Burnham Grapevine in the last five years. Drawn to it by the personal style and character of the gallery, and by the range and quality of the work shown, many return on a regular basis.
“The distinctive feel of Norfolk – space, light and people – brings a clarity of thought and vision, and we aim to reflect that in our choice of artists and their work, be it painting, ceramics, jewellery or sculpture – and we seem to be getting it at least partly right,” says Peter. “We are perhaps best known for representing a very good friend of mine, Gerard Stamp. From hosting his first one-man show in 2005, and subsequently showing his work in London, his reputation and work is now recognised worldwide and this is increasingly reflected in the profile of our visitors.” Away from the gallery Peter indulges his love of North Norfolk through his work with the Burnham Overy Harbour Trust. “Those interested can read more about life at the gallery and beyond at burnhamgrapevine.blogspot.co.uk,” he adds. n a sunny summer’s day, guests to Congham Hall might be out on the lawn playing croquet or sipping champagne on the terrace. And as the days draw in, and the leaves start to fall, they could well be found taking afternoon tea by an open fire. There is a certain gentility to 26-bedroom Congham Hall – and this is still very much in existence despite a recent refurbishment. Surrounded by 30 acres of beautiful grounds, the Norfolk country house hotel presents a comfortable blend of the past and the present. High ceilings, great sash windows and ornate fireplaces sit easily within the same building as the new-look metallic bar and guests are just as likely to be found in the high tech thermal suite of the gleaming spa as
they are reading the paper in the tranquil library. Hotel owner Nicholas Dickinson has only been here for about 18 months but he and his partners have already made their mark on the establishment, which was originally built in 1780 by a wealthy King’s Lynn merchant. “Congham Hall was first turned into a hotel in 1982. At that time it had just eight bedrooms,” he says. “It was then sold to von Essen Hotels, who expanded it significantly.” The group had been, in fact, in the process of a major refurbishment and expansion programme when experienced hotelier Nicholas bought it. “I first came to Congham Hall myself as a guest in 1984 and I had very fond
memories of that visit,” he recalls. “When you run somewhere like this you can employ staff that are hospitable but the hotel itself also has to be hospitable. It is all about the feel of the place as you walk in and I remembered Congham Hall as a very friendly hotel.” Indeed, the establishment had a reputation as one of the best country house hotels in Norfolk and Nicholas believed he was not only capable of maintaining that, but also enhancing it. “It was quite traditional in many ways and I wanted to retain an element of that – but at the same time to bring in a more relaxed feel, a degree of informality. “I wanted it to be a place where classic met contemporary.” His own refurbishment programme,

the kitchen garden, orchard or famous herb garden within the grounds. Other foods come from local suppliers – these include the likes of rare-breed pork from the Fruit Pig Company, venison from Holkham and oysters from Brancaster.
By creating the library, for example, space for comfortable relaxation was effectively doubled, and by reorganising the bar and restaurant, more emphasis was given to the dining experience.
“Afternoon teas and champagne afternoon teas are also very popular here,” he says.
“Again, this part of the hotel is a lot more informal now; people can come to enjoy a fillet steak one night and then a homemade hamburger the next and we have the very contemporary bar, which can be opened up on to the restaurant area for weddings and special occasions.”
And he adds: “We are keen to ensure the hotel keeps evolving and moving forward but at the same time we do want to continue to offer everything our guests enjoy and expect, and to retain what has always been the essence of Congham Hall.”

orfolk is known for its magnificent barn conversions and fewer can be more impressive than those at Barsham. Here award-winning Hudson Architects converted a collection of impressive brick and flint agricultural buildings to create five spectacular, spacious holiday homes. Some eight years later, Jenny Dale, one of the owners of the historic properties, is enjoying high levels of repeat business. Those who come to stay at the Great East Barn, High Barsham, Greys Court, Long Meadow and Little Barsham relish the clever design and the high levels of comfort, as well as the

exceptional experience of a stay in a high end holiday home. “The barns are very well equipped and well designed – people like to know they are coming to stay in a beautiful space, with all the amenities,” she says. “We did a lot of research before starting work on the interiors. Often when you have several barns in a complex they all look exactly the same. We wanted to do something different with each of ours and to give them each a very unique look.” The Great East Barn is the largest property and sleeps up to 14 people.

This was once a 19th century granary and now offers fabulous open plan living, along with six double bedrooms and one twin. High Barsham is a former threshing barn and now accommodates up to 12 people. Its interior has gentle eastern influences. Once a stable building, Greys Court is a single storey holiday home, with a cool Scandinavian feel. It sleeps up to 10 guests. Long Meadow is the oldest property on the farm. This was once the milking parlour and dates from 1715. It sleeps eight and features a large, oak-beamed sitting room.

The smallest barn is Little Barsham. Once used for rearing lambs and sheltering sheep, it offers a subtle, rustic chic for up to four people. Jenny, who is also an interior designer, has an eye for the successful juxtaposition of historic, rural character and eye-catching, contemporary style. She maintains the barns to the highest standard through a programme of continuous improvement. “I think it is important for everything to look fresh,” she says. “You can’t rest on your laurels with properties like this.” While the barns, which have access to a
spa pool, have always been popular with holidaymakers keen to experience the beauty of North Norfolk, Jenny is increasingly taking bookings for corporate clients eager to book all the properties at the same time for workshops and brainstorming sessions. “In the past they might have gone to a hotel but they now often like to spend time together in a completely different environment. They cook together and eat together and generally find it to be a much more convivial atmosphere.”
“We can sleep up to 50 friends and family here, which means everyone can spend a few days together. We can also erect a marquee up for a reception of up to 80 people,” she adds. “We will keep moving forward and considering different ideas. We are now starting to look at doing more residential courses – artisan breadmaking, for example, as well as wine tasting and even creative writing.” Words by Abigail Saltmarsh Images courtesy of Barsham Barns
Barsham Barns is often also booked in its entirety for weddings or other large family celebrations.

hether you enjoy spending time rummaging in shops on quiet lanes or perusing the shelves in bustling stores, there is no shortage of choice when it comes to shopping in Norfolk and Suffolk. Likewise, the dining experiences offered in both counties are among the best in Britain, with restaurants and cafés that are renowned for their exciting recipes and seasonal dishes.
While the area has its share of high street names, it also has a wealth of independent outlets as well.
in our market towns, as well as the city, it is worth considering the places that cater best for our own tastes.
These are smaller, interesting shops selling unique items, which are often hand-made, and eateries where chefs are familiar with the best local ingredients.

FINE WINE, GOOD FOOD T he Last Wine Bar and Restaurant, in Norwich, is looking forward to the autumn and winter months when a whole new array of local produce comes into season, according to director Ecky Limon.

A CHOICE SELECTION
For more than 23 years now, Jayne and Nigel Raffles have been running restaurants in Norwich – and they remain as passionate as ever about working in the city
W
ith three successful restaurants in the city centre, Jayne and Nigel Raffles are in a prime position to expound on the many great attractions of Norwich and the wonderful produce available in Norfolk. The couple, who own Pinocchio’s, St Benedict’s and the Library Bar and Grill, have been in the business for 23 years now, and still throw themselves wholeheartedly into their work and the promotion of Norwich in general. “My husband Nigel still cooks on every shift – but then he’s as bonkers about food as he has always been,” admits Jayne. “We love working in Norwich and are passionate about the independent restaurants and shops we have here. “We feel Norwich has something that is truly unique and that our restaurants are part of that.”
Jayne is a keen wine enthusiast and will soon be launching her own small wine business too “I am lucky enough to be able to try a lot of different wines and already hold tastings. I think there is a huge appreciation for good wine, as well as food, at the moment and this is something I would like to become more involved in.” RAFFLES RESTAURANTS For more details of events at Raffles Restaurants over the coming months or to reserve a table visit www.rafflesrestaurants.co.uk Call PINOCCHIO’S RESTAURANT on 01603 613318 or visit ww.pinocchiosrestaurant.net Call ST BENEDICT’S RESTAURANT on 01603 765377 or visit www.stbenedictsrestaurant.co.uk Call the LIBRARY BAR AND GRILL on 01603 616606 or visit www.thelibraryrestaurant.co.uk
Food and wine events will be held at all the restaurants throughout the autumn season and bookings are already being taken for Christmas. The Raffles group can also cater for wedding and other functions, and offers space for corporate events. “We have developed – and will keep developing – what we offer, trying to give our customers what they want and to offer them something different,” she says.
Each of their three restaurants has its own very clear identity. Pinocchio’s is described as a Mediterranean brasserie. Its dishes include stone baked pizza and authentic pastas, and it tends to attract a mixed crowd, she says.
“St Benedict’s is our ‘bistro luxe.’ It tends to attract people for special occasions and those who are more into their food and wine,” she says.
“I think we are still successful after all this time because we care about our customers and try to ensure they have a really lovely time, whichever restaurant they are at.
At nearby St Benedict’s, dishes might include the likes of double baked cheese soufflé or slow cooked crispy duck with tagine of vegetables.
“The Library Bar and Grill really serves simple, wholesome, wood-grilled food, in an absolutely beautiful building, with a lovely courtyard.”
“We try to please and to make people happy. We want to ensure that while they are with us they have the best dining experience possible.”

hile the cattle, sheep and pigs are out in the fields at Longwood Organic Farm, the freerange geese spend most of their time on the water. Partner in the business Louise Unwin explains the whole operation at Tuddenham, in Suffolk, is totally organic, with all the animals free-range.
“We have been doing this for 24 years now and are highly respected because of the integrity of what we do,” she says. “We have our own, very large, farm shop and butchery, where we sell our organic meat, as well as organic fruit and vegetables, bread and a large selection of groceries. We also sell gifts and wrapping paper.” As Christmas approaches, Longwood, which is certified by the Organic Food

For the past 20 years, Simon Wade and Paul Reed have served their fresh local produce to their customers, and they say autumn is always a busy time. “The game season is just beginning and will go right through until February,” says Simon. “Partridge, pheasant and wild duck is always popular at this time of year, as well as venison, of course.” As Christmas approaches, people start to order their Norfolk white and bronze turkeys, as well as free-range geese. Gourmet sausages, made with

Three-bird roasts can also be prepared, with customers suggesting which birds they would like and choosing their own preferred stuffing. “That is the beauty of a shop like ours. A NEW LOOK, A NEW MENU AND A NEW AMBIENCE – THE BRASSERIE AT BARNHAM BROOM HAS BEEN RELAUNCHED, WITH A DISTINCT EMPHASIS ON FINE FOOD AND A FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE
A fine dining destination
T
his autumn has seen the reopening of Barnham Broom’s Brasserie following a major renovation of the restaurant and a complete change in dining style. General manager of the hotel, Jonathan Ellse, says the AA two rosette restaurant is now ready to claim its place on Norfolk’s fine dining map. “The focus here is on quality,” he stresses. “We are a quality restaurant, serving quality produce, in a quality environment.” The refurbishment of the Brasserie is part of an ongoing programme of investment at the hotel, which is known for its spa and fitness areas, as well as its two 18-hole championship golf courses. The restaurant space has been given a much softer feel, he explains. Guests can now enjoy the magnificent views out across the golf course and garden from comfortable leather seating, within an inviting space, with atmospheric lighting. “We wanted to create a relaxed
environment, somewhere that had real ambience, and I think we have succeeded,” he says. “We have also put together a menu that is easy to read and features lots of local produce and some very good wines.” Dishes, for example, include the likes of chargrilled Norfolk lamb cutlets, with cous cous, feta and tomato salad and pomegranate, as well as confit of Norfolk chicken, sautéed potatoes and bacon and truffle mayonnaise. Beef, pork and seafood, along with many of the fruit and vegetables, are also locally sourced. “We have some great autumn dishes,” he continues. “People will be able to choose from our grill. Some of these may be dishes like fillet steak and rump steak but others will be more unusual, such as venison burger; we like to take our food and do something a little different with it.” As the autumn season gets under way, game is likely to make an appearance at the Brasserie, and over Christmas there will be exciting festive dishes on the menu too. Jonathan, who is as
passionate about wine as he is about food, is also keen to offer some high quality bottles. “I am launching a new wine list, where everything is specially priced to make it affordable,” he says. “We want to be able to suit everyone’s pocket, while also offering them the very best.” A new staff training programme has been introduced. This will see training given on a regular and ongoing basis to ensure an impeccable yet friendly service. “We need to create a seamless experience for our guests as they go on their journey at the Brasserie,” he adds. “We want this to be a destination restaurant, available to those in the area who appreciate good food, as well as guests at the hotel, where the experience is attractive because everything is of a very high standard.” Words by Mary Williams Photography courtesy of the Brasserie For more information or to book a table call 01603 759393 or visit www.barnham-broom.co.uk

hee-Binn Soo has a passion for men’s fashion but at a height of 5ft 6ins struggles to find high quality outfits of a perfect fit. After years of studying engineering and then starting out in a London city career, he has now decided to come up with a solution himself – and has launched Xsclusive, his own designer range. “There are some clothes you can buy in a few high street shops,” he admits. “But they tend to be for younger men and are often hard to find. “I am in my 30s now and when I was working in the city and needed professional, high quality clothes I found it very difficult to find anything at all that was suitable.”
Chee-Binn has led an interesting and very cosmopolitan life. Born in Malaysia, and spending his early years in the country, he also lived in Singapore before moving to the UK. Absorbing himself first in the study of electrical engineering, right up to PhD level, and then completing an MBA at the London Business School, he went on to join a city firm. “Through all of that I have maintained a strong interest in fashion but found it so difficult to find the right clothes, especially when I was busy and could not dedicate the time to really searching the shops,” he explains. “It was almost impossible to find formal shirts, trousers and jackets, and even the ties were not ideal.”
Eventually, he came up with the concept of Xsclusive, a stylish clothing company, with outfits specially tailored for men up to 5ft 8ins. The idea was to provide ranges that fell somewhere between the bespoke and the ready-made, while also offering high quality, classic British tailoring for every occasion. “What other retailers do not always realise is that clothing for shorter men has to be specially proportioned,” he says. “We cater for men from 5ft 2ins up to 5ft 5ins and then from 5ft 6ins up to 5ft 8ins. “Everything within these sizes has to be carefully considered; the length of the sleeves and the size of the collar, for example. It is not simply a case of making the piece of clothing shorter.”
UniquelyAwayAutumn2013#AW:Layout 1 27/10/2015 18:43 Page 43
UNIQUELY AWAY AUTUMN 2013
Patterns need to be carefully considered; smaller checks, rather than larger checks, for example, tend to look better on shorter men, and standard length ties are not always perfect. They tend to be made at around 58ins to 60ins while Xsclusive’s own designs are 55ins and 56ins. Chee-Bin has launched his business with formal shirts, ties and cufflinks. Jackets will come next, as well as casual shirts, and then trousers. Ultimately, the aim is that Xsclusive will also offer designer clothes to shorter women too. At the moment, the clothing business is entirely online. Chee-Binn is, however, looking at supplying high end men’s outlets and then ultimately opening his own central London boutique and perhaps launching in the Far East.
“I am also particularly looking at Norfolk and Suffolk,” he continues.
“People know they are buying clothing of a high quality with Xsclusive,” he adds.
“I believe there is strong demand here for sophisticated, varied clothing for shorter men.
“I wanted to create clothes that were superior and very special.
“Newmarket, for example, where there are lots of jockeys, would be an ideal place to target. I would like to see my clothing in a variety of boutiques across Norfolk and Suffolk.” With ties, cufflinks and even shirts making ideal Christmas and birthday presents, Chee-Binn hopes his products will also be bought by friends and relatives too.
“I do not want shorter men to have to compromise any more.” Words by Abigail Saltmarsh Photography courtesy of Xsclusive For more information visit www.xsclusive.co.uk

Bringing traditional craft together with contemporary design, one Norfolk-based family has come up with a concept to make us all sleep a little better at night

P
icture a wrought iron bed and you are likely to imagine something traditional, probably in black, and with gleaming brass finials. The beautiful brick and flint barn that houses the family-run Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Company certainly won’t disappoint those seeking an elegant, classic design. But, explain brothers Jack and Harry Oldfield, the Norfolk-based company also specialises in more contemporary and colourful beds too. “We have beds in all sorts of styles – some that have a more urban look or a different colour,” says Harry. “We come up with new designs all the time to complement our traditional collection. What is the same about all our beds,
however, is that they are hand-made, right here in Norfolk.” The tale behind the successful Harpleybased operation is fascinating. Owners Amanda and Stephen moved from Norfolk to London, and then up to Derbyshire, for reasons of work. When accountant Stephen had a health scare, however, they decided to return with their sons to their home county, to enjoy a quieter life in rural Norfolk. “Mum ordered us each a wrought iron bed when we got here,” recalls Jack. “But when they arrived she was really disappointed because they were not very good quality.” The family started mulling over the
problem and agreed that most people would require their bed to be well-made. “Dad saw a market for English-made, hand-crafted products and set about looking into the possibility of making them in Norfolk.” It soon became clear that the Oldfields had hit upon something. Starting off with just a couple of designs, they opened a workshop and soon their pieces of furniture were being snapped up. A showroom in Dersingham was initially the perfect place to showcase the beds but when demand out-stripped space they moved to the former dairy in Harpley. “One of the reasons people like these beds so much is that they appreciate the

fact they are made from start to finish in Norfolk, instead of just being assembled in the UK.” Both the boys have always been involved in the business but Jack joined officially three years ago and Harry came on board last March. Each brings his own skill set to the operation and now everyone has input when it comes to the designs. Oliver, for example, was Jack’s idea while the latest bed, William, was Harry’s. “I was queuing up for a ride in Disneyland, California, and looked down at the railings. Suddenly the idea came to me for a bed in a similar design,” he explains. “It is in the style of scaffolding. We initially thought it would appeal more to men but it is also generating a lot of interest among women.”
The family have now also launched the Colour Collection. This is where colour can be applied to all the hand-made wrought iron beds. This year raspberry, yellow, metallic blue and purple are being offered. If the series goes well, it will feature new colours every year. While the showroom is a great place to wander round – to look at all the beds and chat to whichever family members are around – a great many of the sales are made via the company’s website. This sees beds being sent right across the world from the workshop at nearby Flitcham Barns.
keep for a long time.” As well as in iron and brass, beds also come in nickel – and the family can offer a bespoke service. “That is the beauty of what we do here,” says Harry. “We can provide people with precisely what they want. “They know we can come up with something to meet their exact requirements because this is a family business and everything is made right here in Norfolk.”
Words by Abigail Saltmarsh
“People sometimes start with the website and then come in afterwards to have a look,” says Jack. “They often like to speak to someone. A bed is an important purchase that you expect to

This, says managing director Simon Barclay, gives his team great flexibility when it comes to finding visitors just the right place to stay. WITH SOME 200 HOLIDAY PROPERTIES IN NORFOLK, KET T COUNTR Y COT TAGES IS LIKELY TO HAVE SOMEWHERE TO MEET YOUR NEEDS
“We have a mixture of everything, from chalets in Bacton and Mundesley to large houses that sleep up to 14 in Brancaster,” he says. “This, together with our knowledge of the local area, allows us to be very flexible. People can come to us with the dates they are looking for, the size of their group and the kind of place they want – and we can always find them somewhere.” Knowledge of the local area also means the team can often negotiate discounts with local pubs, restaurants and activities. They can also advise on events happening during the duration of the stay and the best places to visit in different seasons.
“We can arrange for different lengths of stay over Christmas,” he goes on. “We can also ensure the fridge is fully stocked when you arrive and that there is a pile of wood for the wood-burner.” The company offers a full management service to second home-owners. The aim is to help them generate an income while also having the freedom to use the property whenever they choose and not to worry about it at other times. “We have been doing this for 10 years now. We started with just three holiday homes and it grew from there,” says Simon. “We all love this area and believe it is a great place to come for a holiday. At this time of year there is still so much to do, from bird-watching and walking to playing golf and visiting stately homes.” For more information call 01328 887685 or visit www.kettcountrycottages.co.uk

reen, red and just a hint of sparkle – Elveden is getting ready for Christmas.
The estate at the heart of Thetford Forest is preparing for its busiest season of the year and is determined to make the experience as exciting as possible. On Saturday 23 November and Sunday 24 November, the Festive Fayre will be held at the estate, explains head of marketing Frances Armstrong. “This is a food and craft fair, where local produce will be sold. This year we have
extended it to two days and it will really be the beginning of Christmas at Elveden.” From Saturday 30 November, visitors will be able to buy their Christmas trees here; Norway spruce, Nordmann fir, Fraser fir and Scots pine, all grown on the estate, will be available. “As usual we will be selling display trees up to 75ft high to local authorities and organisations and, of course, members of the public can come to choose theirs for their own homes,” she says. “At the weekends, until Saturday 14

December and Sunday 15 December, we will have the gorgeous Newfoundland dogs here; they will tow trees to cars in return for a donation to the East Anglian Air Ambulance.” Father Christmas will also be at Elveden every weekend from Saturday 30 November. Children will be able to walk through the trees to his new forest grotto to receive a traditional gift and a sapling. “What is also new this year is that we will have a land train, the Elveden Express,” she adds.

Weather permitting, there will also be donkey rides every weekend from Saturday 23 November until Sunday 22 December.
The shop will also be selling hampers visitors can make these up themselves if they wish, with goodies from the food hall and home and garden shops.
Other festivities will include the opening of a shop selling nothing but Christmas decorations. Here visitors will be able to choose from items in all colours and themes, from traditional reds and greens to a whole rainbow of bright colours.
Visitors are encouraged to take a break from their shopping at the Elveden Inn, and refreshments in the restaurant will have a distinctly festive flavour too, with the estate’s own produce appearing in many of the dishes.
“Our food and wine shop will also, of course, have all sorts of things for Christmas. These could be for your own Christmas table or for gifts.”
“Christmas parties will be held every Friday and Saturday night, from Friday 6 December, with a four-course meal and live music. We will also be doing

Christmas lunches,” Frances says. “These could well feature our unusual kitchen garden vegetables, such as golden beetroot and white sprouting broccoli. Some of these will also be available in a roasting pack, as part of our Christmas range.” And she adds: “You could, in fact, find everything you need for the festive season here – you could get your entire Christmas from Elveden.” For more information, times and prices visit www.elveden.com

Shouldham Warren, Cranberry Rough, Shouldham, Norfolk Great Hockham, Norfolk A glorious place to visit in the autumn, Shouldham Common is an undulating site on the edge of the fens.
There is woodland to enjoy at Cranberry Rough.
There are two superb walks here. The yellow route is just 0.75 miles long while at 2.5 miles the red walk offers greater opportunities to explore.
This area was once the site of a large lake, left by the retreating glaciers of the last Ice Age, some 10,000 to 12,000 years ago.
From Black Drain there are stunning views over Tall Herb Fen to the north, across the River Nar.
In Tudor times there was still a large lake, of around 280 acres, called Hockham Mere, but it gradually silted up.
The remnants of a historic spring on top of the hill are indicated by a rhododendron avenue.
Today Cranberry Rough provides a wide range of wetland habitats, including swamp woodland, tall reed fen, a network of dykes and pools, and areas of damp grassland and fen. More than 60 species of spiders have been found here.

Dunwich Forest is part of the Suffolk Coasts and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
See how many different trees you can identify at Bacton Woods.
This is about eight miles from Ipswich and consists of about 5.8 square miles of coniferous plantations, interspersed with broad leaf trees.
The forest links into some wonderful conservation areas of marshland and wetland and is great for walkers. The area is currently managed by the Forestry Commission, Suffolk Wildlife Trust and RSBP. If you visit the northern section, you might catch sight of the herd of Dartmoor ponies.
The original woodland included sessile oaks and two of these, which are thought to be over 200 years old, still remain. There are now said to be more than 30 species of tree in the wood, including Scots and Corsican pine, western hemlock, Douglas fir and larch.
There are also some heathland and wetland areas here. Look out for the nightjar and the woodlark – and, if local folklore is to be believed you might even spot something not of this planet, on the UFO trail!

E+new gallery in the Thoroughfare, Woodbridge specialises in contemporary art, design furniture and bespoke stationery. Owner Geoff Witts, who has a background in publishing, opened the business in 2008.
At that time, he explains, it was a shop that happened to include artwork but five and a half years later he has represented more than 40 of the best contemporary artists and established it as one of East Anglia’s leading modernist galleries.
The art of living
An ongoing mixed exhibition is regularly broken by solo displays. Selected artists have included Honor Surie, Colin Slee, Emma Green, Bob Broadley and John Pollard. “I’m very instinctive about my selection of work,” says Geoff. “A lot of my artists have an established track record, but I’m always keen to find new talent.” But, he continues: “RE+new is about more than art – it’s about design and it’s about lifestyle. I like to feel that customers leave here with something that will enhance their lives, whether it’s an Eames chair or an A6 notebook, simply designed with good paper and stitched in sections so your precious notes will stay intact.” Photograph courtesy of RE+new For more information call 01394 386314 or visit www.replusnew.com

Georgina had two bed linen shops and worked as an interior designer for Harrods and Liberty, in London. rother and sister, Louise and Mark Weir, are proud of the workmanship and heritage that goes into every piece of furniture that leaves their family business in Suffolk. The company was launched by their father, Gerald, more than 60 years ago, and is still renowned for its emphasis on quality and traditional skills. “More than 90 per cent of what we sell is made right here at our workshop in Woodbridge,” says Louise. “We have a team of people who are experts at what they do and have been with us for a very long time.” The family have a long history in carpentry and furniture-making. Gerald started out with a timber mill in Ipswich before moving into the antiques
business and then reproduction and contemporary furniture. “Clients started asking him to make completely new pieces for them and now we no longer do antiques. Instead we create everything by hand, in a variety of styles, from the traditional through to contemporary.” Those commissioning pieces can look through the company’s brochure or approach the staff with an idea. They are welcome to visit the workshop to see their furniture being crafted by hand. “We use a variety of hardwoods, including oak, cherry, walnut and ash – and we make anything from candlesticks up to enormous dining tables,” she continues. “We can also make furniture to fit a whole room, such as a study.”
At this time of year, customers often commission new pieces ready for the festive period. Dining tables and chairs are particularly popular and those keen to sit down to Christmas dinner at their new piece are urged to discuss their requirements with Gerald Weir Furniture as soon as possible. “We have been in this business for a long time and are very experienced,” adds Louise. “Mark and I grew up with furniture-making and we have a very skilled team of people working with us. “What we make here is of an extremely high quality. Everything we produce ourselves is entirely British-made and hand-crafted from start to finish.” For more information call 01394 610900 or visit www.geraldweir.co.uk

Celebrating at the Swan here has always been something special about the Swan Hotel in Southwold.
T
Now, however, following redecoration at the 350 year-old year-old establishment, owners Adnams are seeing even more couples booking to hold their wedding there. Liz Cobbold, head of marketing at the brewery, explains parts of the hotel have now been given a more contemporary interior design.
THE HISTORIC SOUTHWOLD WEDDING VENUE HAS A NEW LOOK, MAKING IT AN EVEN MORE MAGICAL PLACE TO TIE THE KNOT
“The refurbishment of our public areas has really transformed the Reading Room, which is licensed for civil ceremonies,” she says. “We have worked with local interior designers, who chose from a very contemporary Farrow & Ball palette and gave the room a very neutral look.” The large Reading Room can seat up to 55 guests at a wedding. Receptions can also be held in this space or guests can choose to use the Drawing Room. Other rooms can also be made available at particular times, allowing for higher numbers of guests to be accommodated. Martin Edwards, general manager at the Swan, says the hotel can be very flexible when it comes to helping plan a wedding or other celebration.
out where we can,” he says. “The redecorated areas do look superb now. We have had wonderful feedback from our guests, including those who have been visiting us for many years.” The AA four star Swan, and its AA two rosette restaurant, see high levels of repeat business. While Southwold is at its busiest in the summer, autumn can be a popular time to visit as well. “There are wonderful dishes to enjoy in our restaurant at that time of year,” he points out. “The walking around here is very good and the countryside is particularly beautiful in the autumn.” Over the Christmas period, the hotel will be hosting various party nights. Special festive breaks will also be available. The new look reception areas, such as the Reading Room, could be ideal for private Christmas parties, says Martin. “I think the refurbishment only serves to make the Swan even more appealing,” he adds. “When you also consider our beautiful historic building, our wonderful staff and our great British seaside town location, it is not hard to understand why people enjoy visiting the Swan, and getting married here.” Words by Mary Williams Photography courtesy of the Swan Hotel

utumn at the Apex looks set to be a lively affair, according to Nick Wells, head of programming at the venue.
Bury St Edmunds’s exciting arts centre has been open for three years now and is consistently attracting an impressive selection of performers. “We try to ensure we have as broad a programme as possible,” says Nick. “The whole raison d’etre here is high quality and variety. We aim to bring the very best jazz, pop, rock, classical, world and folk music to Bury St Edmunds, as well as other types of entertainment.” Highlights in October include the likes of the South, formerly known as the Beautiful South, who had a string of hits with songs such as Old Red Eyes Is Back, Rotterdam, Don’t Marry Her, Perfect 10 and A Little Time. Harpist Catrin Finch will also be performing this month, with Seckou Keita, a Senegalese kora player.
November sees a concert by Evgenia Rubinova. A silver medal-winner at the 2003 Leeds International Piano Competition, she will be playing pieces by Beethoven, Prokofiev and Rachmaninov. Renowned guitarist John Williams also takes to the stage in November. He is, of course, well known for his collaborations with other musicians, including André Previn, Cleo Laine, John Dankworth and Daniel Barenboim. In this concert he will perform works by Bach, Albéniz, Sculthorpe, Goss, Hand, Koehne and Barrios, as well as playing some of his own music. “We also have a recreation of Benny Goodman’s famous 1938 Carnegie Hall
concert,” says Nick. “Ex Jools Holland arranger and soloist Pete Long has put together a big band to mark the 75th anniversary of the event, which is regarded by many to have been the finest jazz spectacle ever.” December also holds a seasonal sack full of treats, with the likes of the Magic of Motown, Roy Wood’s Christmas Show and An Albion Christmas, which sees founder of Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and the Albion Band, Ashley Hutchings joined on stage by Kellie While, Simon Care and Simon Nicol, for an evening of traditional English festive music, dancing and celebration. “We also have some superb folk music in December, with both Steeleye Span and Joe Brown performing,” Nick adds. “There are all sorts of great performances lined up for those in Bury St Edmunds and the surrounding area to enjoy over the coming months.” Words by by Mary Williams
“Prince Charles reinstated the title of Royal Harpist to the Prince of Wales for Catrin,” Nick says. “This should be a very exciting performance.”

Winter wonderland In quiet Edwardstone, not far from Sudbury, families can head into the forest to cut their own Suffolk-grown Christmas tree Norway spruce, as well as the more compact, slightly blue-grey Serbian spruce. Arriving with him as tiny saplings of just six to nine inches, they are nurtured and cultivated until they are anywhere between one and 30ft in height. “Each year sales seem to go up,” he admits. “Last year we sold 700 to 800 trees.” t is not until autumn is well underway that most of us start to think about Christmas.
I
For one Suffolk man, however, the festive season is never far from his mind. Richard Morris, of Edwardstone, grows Christmas trees on the land behind his house all year round. “I bought about 13 acres of the land 15 years ago and decided to plant a woodland there. I planted the Christmas trees too to give the small whips shelter,” he explains. “As the woodland began to grow, we started selling the Christmas trees at the gate and this proved so popular that we decided to dedicate four acres to them.” Today, Richard grows the traditional
While Richard can cut trees to order ready for people to collect, many visitors enjoy the fun of heading out into the forest to choose their own. They often make a day of their trip, heading to local pub the White Horse Inn afterwards. “People enjoy having a tree that they know is locally grown and freshly cut,” he adds. “There are lots of families who now make it part of their Christmas tradition to come to Edwardstone to choose their tree.” Words by Mary Williams, Christmas tree photography courtesy of Richard Morris Edwardstone Christmas Trees is open for business from the first weekend in December, and then from Friday to Monday until Christmas. Festive cheer elicious, home-cooked food, freshly brewed beer and a roaring fire – Christmas always brings great cheer at the Edwardstone White Horse Inn.

Owner John Norton explained the establishment was a traditional Suffolk pub, which brewed its own beer, at the Mill Green Brewery. “We grow many of the vegetables we use here too – and other ingredients are sourced locally,” he says. “We have just been listed in the Independent newpaper’s best 50 Sunday Lunches in the UK.” The pub is also very unusual in that local coppice wood is used to both heat the premises and in the brewing process. “We are very traditional in everything we do here,” he adds. “There are very few pubs like us left in Suffolk.” Pub photography courtesy of John Norton For more information call 01787 211211 or visit www.edwardstonewhitehorse.co.uk

A GOOD SPORT
C
Can anyone learn to do it? How physically fit do you have to be? Anyone who fancies riding off road can have a good time. Fitness all depends on the group you ride with. When coaching, I take those aged five years old right up to adults and even seniors. It is best to find a group of like-minded riders of a similar fitness level to you so you can have fun. MTB is about banter and fun, as well as biking off road.
an you tell us a little about yourself? I am a British cycling level two MTB (mountain biking) coach. I run coaching, for all ages and abilities, and am also currently chairman of www.trogmtb.com, a club creating and maintaining trails in Tunstall Forest, Suffolk. I live in Ipswich with my wife and family – and I live for anything to do with mountain biking! I love the sport and am now spending my free time giving back to the sport what I have enjoyed. What do you enjoy about living in Suffolk? We have some great places to spend time, like Dedham, Woodbridge or Aldeburgh, where you are guaranteed great sights and great beer. When did you first start mountain biking? For as long as I can remember I have cycled but mountain biking did not find me until I was made redundant in about 2005, when my lovely wife bought me a mountain bike to get me out from under her feet and keep me fit. What drew you to the sport? What makes it so enjoyable? Exploring new places, and finding my way around the trails - even getting lost from time to time - is very exciting. It is such a rush hitting a trail hard and surviving - some times you don’t and my word it hurts! Riding as a group makes you push yourself harder as you know there’s someone to help if it goes wrong. But not knowing how it is going to end is what really makes it enjoyable.
What makes this part of the world a good place for the sport? We are blessed with an awesome network of MTB trails in Suffolk; we have Thetford to the north and Dunwich also giving us great scope. I personally have a soft spot for Tunstall and the TROGs (Tunstall Rendlesham Off-Road Group). The club is maintaining a great set of trails there. They are currently installing and nearing completion of the new Viking Trail. This is a great 10-mile loop, which will be graded red (to be ridden by anyone with a good fitness level). Is autumn a good time of year to have a go? Autumn is a great time – not too hot, too cold or too wet and perfect for riding the trails. What I personally love about autumn riding is the great colour you find when the trees go through the summer to winter change.
Is it expensive? What equipment is required? The equipment required is really a bike and a helmet – and if that is all you can afford then so be it. To buy a mountain bike can cost anything from £50 for a bike from eBay right up to £6,000 for a new top end, full carbon, super light-weight race bike. But as you progress in the sport you start to look at what works for you, and what makes you go faster. One item I personally don’t scrimp on is the helmet. What advice would you give someone considering taking up the sport? Have a look at the TROG website and check out what’s going on or come along to an MSG (Mud, Sweat and Gears) event and see if it’s for you. Or why not think about getting a group of friends together for a session? But more than anything, you just need to get out there and ride. For more information call 07887 543248 or visit www.trogmtb.com or www.mudsweatgears.co.uk

true Star of the East at any time of year, historic Norwich shines particularly brightly at Christmas.
The shopping capital of East Anglia comes to life as stores and retail outlets load their shelves with all manner of festive temptations. Warm lights glow through the windows of independent shops on cobbled streets and carols ring out from high street and department stores. Norwich’s Christmas lights promise to look more spectacular than ever this year as they dazzle the city in the theme of NORWICHRISTMAS – Star of the East. As well as modern filigree star-ball suspensions and cool blue up-lighters in trees across the city, the illuminations will be complemented by garlands of shimmering rays, draped across some of the main shopping streets and winding narrow alleys of Norwich. Giant light projections will further enhance the city’s festive decor. Norwich Castle will radiate with exploding stars while at City Hall there will be spotlights of colour and art deco brick columns wrapped in hundreds of tiny, glittering silver and gold bulbs. City Hall tower, standing proudly over the 900-year-old Market Place and the 15th century Guildhall, will be crowned with yet more sparkling splendour.

St Seraphim’s Trust is staging an exhibition entitled Praying with Icons – The Work of the Walsingham Iconographers at Norwich Cathedral. This is the first exhibition of the colourful work of the late Fr David and Leon Liddament of the Brotherhood of St Seraphim. For more than 40 years the iconographers made icons in the Orthodox tradition. These can now be found in churches and private collections across the world. Both men used traditional methods of egg tempera painting and developed their own distinct styles. They drew their inspiration from both Greek and Russian sources, as well as Celtic ornamentation. They placed particular emphasis on the early British saints in their work, such as Saint Columba and Saint Alban. For more information visit www.iconpainter.org.uk

UNIQUELY AWAY AUTUMN 2013
In the know In your opinion what makes the county so appealing to visitors? The beautiful countryside and the sense of peace and tranquillity – something I find more appealing as I get older.
Tony Cowards, Comedian Can you tell us about your upbringing in Suffolk? I was born in Ipswich, at Heath Road Hospital, and lived in Stowmarket until I was about nine or 10, then moved to a place called Nedging Tye, which is basically a tiny little village at the end of the runway at RAF Wattisham. When did you leave the county and where do you live now? I left Suffolk when I was about 12, when my mum and dad divorced. My mum and I moved back to East London, which is where my parents are originally from. Do you return often? Yes, my dad still lives in Suffolk, as do several of my friends, and as a “tractor-boy,” I often come back to go to matches at Portman Road.
Can you tell us a little about how you came to be a comedian? A friend of mine started running a comedy night in North London called the Comedians’ Graveyard, which was brilliant fun, and had headline acts such as Tim Vine and Jimmy Carr, as well as open spots for very new comics, who would sometimes be great and sometimes bomb spectacularly. I used to go most months, sometimes helping out with sketches, doing the sound, and eventually, with some cajoling, I decided to do some open spots at some other comedy nights (I was too nervous to do them at the Graveyard to begin with, in case I died in front of people who knew me!) After a few gigs I caught the bug and haven’t looked back... How do you define your comedy? My comedy is mostly one-liners, like Tim Vine or Milton Jones. I love puns and word play. As a kid my favourite was Tommy Cooper, so I grew up loving that style of silly joke. Do you have any gigs coming up in Norfolk or Suffolk? I am gigging at Weird Coastal Buoys Comedy, at the Waterside Bar and Grill, in Corton, near Lowestoft, on Thursday 31 October.
Where are your own personal favourite places to visit in Suffolk – and why? Portman Road when Ipswich are playing well and winning! I also love Walberswick, Aldeburgh and Southwold. This is such a beautiful part of the Suffolk coast; there’s a real sense that you are on the edge of England, with only the wild North Sea separating you from mainland Europe. In Norfolk, I love Wells-next-the-Sea, with its colourful beach huts and the harbour railway - it reminds me of childhood holidays. There’s something very invigorating and stimulating about the Suffolk and Norfolk coast. What would you suggest people do if they had just one day to spend in Suffolk? Go to Orford Castle, a fantastic Norman structure, and visit Orford Ness, a truly magnificent and slightly bizarre combination of wildlife reserve and former MoD testing ground. Tell us about what you believe to be some of Suffolk’s hidden gems? Other than those I’ve already mentioned, Sutton Hoo, the Museum of East Anglian life in Stowmarket and Framlingham Castle are great for history buffs, Minsmere RSPB reserve for wildlife enthusiasts and Ipswich waterfront if you like browsing little bistros, shops and bars. Can you tell us a joke about Suffolk? Growing up in Suffolk, I wanted to be a “web designer” or, as we called them back then, “a spider.” For more information on Tony and his gigs visit www.tonycowards.co.uk
