Uniquely AWAY
It won’t be long before spring is here and the crisp Norfolk and Suffolk winters give way to more sunshine and colour. To celebrate the arrival of the season, Uniquely Away suggests some great places to enjoy the superb natural surroundings, from a stroll by the River Stour, in Suffolk, to locations in Norfolk, to see some of the first daffodils. This is traditionally the time of year when brides and grooms start planning their weddings. As so many people travel to this corner of the country to celebrate tying the knot, we thought we would bring you some of the best places to host an event and tell you about some of those who can offer their expertise on the day itself. In this early spring issue, we also look at holiday cottages in the area and, as usual, showcase some hotels, golf clubs and spas. Once again, we bring you some outstanding photography and tell you about some of Norfolk and Suffolk’s artists, galleries and exhibitions, as well as places to eat and activities to enjoy.
About the designer Based in Norwich, Mark Edwards specialises in graphic design, art direction and brand identity. Mark has worked on a diverse selection of projects for a variety of clients both locally and nationally. www.designed.co.uk

originally built. Additions were made in the early 20th century but it is almost impossible to tell where the newer sections begin and end.
The Old Hall, which can accommodate up to 16 guests, still presents many of its handsome original features, explains owner Janine Price.
“In World War One the house was used as a hospital and when an officers’ mess was needed, a thatched pavilion was built next to where the swimming pool is now. In the past this was also used as a Girl Guide hut.
“It is hugely atmospheric,” she says. “As soon as you come in, you can smell the antique oak and see candles flickering on polished surfaces. You can feel the history all about you yet at the same time it is warm and inviting, and feels like a proper home.”
“Previous owners have used it as a games room – and even as an aviary – but when we realised what a fantastic view it had, we decided to make it into a poolside room.”
Indeed, the Old Hall has a fascinating history. While the existing building dates back to Elizabethan times, a house is believed to have been on this site since the 13th century and the land on which it sits is thought to have once been part of the estate, which was settled on Anne of Cleves, following her divorce from King Henry VIII. Today the substantial, seven-bedroom property, which has a Grade II* Listing, covers the same footprint as when it was
Janine and her family bought the Old Hall some 13 years ago and, in careful discussion with English Heritage, carried out a programme of renovation.
“But we do want people to feel relaxed and comfortable so we have complemented the historic house with modern luxuries and home comforts too. We have Emma Bridgewater pottery, for example, and linen from the White Company. “There is a funky attic dormitory for children, with four single beds and a cinema. For children who want more outdoor fun, we can organise camping in bell tents too.” With reception rooms including the garden room, drawing room, sitting room, library and children’s den, as well as the country house kitchen and Great Hall, there is plenty of room to spread out inside.
“It was important to us to retain the authenticity of the house wherever possible,” she says.
Outside, however, the grounds also offer endless fun, stretching to 17 acres, and including formal gardens, paddocks and woodland, as well as a tennis court and the pool.
Today highlights of the sumptuous holiday home include its exposed beams, mullioned windows, impressive oak staircase and enormous open fireplace.
“At the end of the 19th century, one of the sons of a previous owner went off to India and made his fortune in tea. When he returned home he spent 15 years restoring the house and gardens,

planting hundreds of roses. In the summer, the scent from these old varieties is just incredible.” The Old Hall is often booked by large groups wishing to gather together for special celebrations. It is also, however, ideal for conferences, meetings and business away days, offering a completely different experience to a hotel stay. Some guests to the house, which is just 15 minutes from Norwich, choose to explore the glorious surroundings while others just wish to indulge in the experience of the manor itself. Trips out can be arranged for guests and activities as diverse as archery, chocolate tasting and beauty therapies can also be brought to the house. While the Old Hall, which was featured by the Independent as one of the best 50 places to stay in Britain, is booked on a self-catering basis, Janine can arrange for fine meals to be brought in.
cooked meals can be delivered for guests to serve themselves. “Guests love this. They go up to dress for dinner while the team prepares the food, lights the candles and the fire, and lays the table. They are then greeted with champagne on a silver tray. After the meal, everything is cleared up – and it is as if the fairies have been!

“We can also arrange for our local fish and chip man to bring his van to cook for guests to eat either in the garden or round a roaring fire or we can ask fine Indian cuisine caterers Ethnic Fusion to deliver some of their delicious, freshly cooked food.” Janine adds: “What we have found is that people love to lose themselves in the whole experience of being here. “By coming to the Old Hall they are able to live out their dreams, spending time in a quintessential Elizabethan country house, as if it were their very own.” Photography courtesy of the Old Hall

“I live in Norwich now but was born in East London and grew up close to Epping Forest, where I spent a lot of time and learned to love nature. “I came to photography quite late – I didn’t pick up a camera until I was 27. I was studying art at the time and my tutor suggested I experiment with it. I haven’t looked back since! “I have spent the last 20 years studying and training through practice and
reflection. I feel there is always more to learn and improve on. “Today my main subject matter is the natural world. I especially like to capture the natural essence of a place or moment and to convey something of its quality to the viewer. “My work is quite varied, taking in the first light of the day on a calm lake scene to shooting a river from a bridge along the Marriott’s Way on an overcast
afternoon, when the sun is diffused by cloud. To a photographer, a sunny day may not be the most interesting. “Early morning and evening are my favourite times because of the softer light and the stillness, and also because I believe that very early in the day you capture a place looking its best. People have asked me how I have created a certain image. I say I got there early, before the sun became too harsh. Also, in the evening and early morning,

waterfowl are preening in shallow water and are easier to approach. “I feel this is a really unique part of the country. The rural tradition, the natural landscape, the wonderful skies and coast, as well as the beauty of a city, such as Norwich, make it a really special place. There is also a flourishing and vibrant artistic community here. “The vast skies and the flatness of the landscapes in Norfolk and Suffolk
mean sunrise and sunset are visible wherever you go. The skies and clouds are always different and interesting. “I am currently working on a project about the North Norfolk coast and next year I am planning to cycle along the coast, photographing as I go! “In many ways I am a traditional photographer. I don’t add or take things away from the original image; I bring out what is already there.
I am not keen on overly digitally manipulated images. “I also believe the camera doesn’t take the picture it is merely a tool – rather like an artist’s brush and palette.” For more information visit www.fineartnorfolk.co.uk or www.garyrayner.co.uk or email garyrayner007@gmail.com

Westcliffe Gallery, Sheri Taking the decision to go full-time and to try to earn a living from her skills was risky but Frances was determined to make it work. As such, she now balances her time between taking on commissions and preparing for exhibitions. “Every year I am gaining more and more experience, exhibiting in different places, from galleries in Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich and Sudbury to some in London. I also display my work at art fairs and have exhibited at the Suffolk Show. This year I hope to have a presence at the Royal Norfolk Show.”
rances Vincent is at her happiest when she has a pencil in her hand. Her specialism is the portrayal of animals, from those owned by individuals who approach her for commissions, to others in the wild.

“I have been a full-time artist since 2011,” says Frances, who is largely selftaught. “I always loved drawing, however. When I was younger, I was known as ‘the girl who could draw.’” With encouragement from her friends, family and teachers, Frances pursued her passion and started exhibiting her work in local shows and events from the age of 13. After school she decided to study for a national diploma in arts and design at Suffolk New College, in Ipswich, which focused her thoughts and made her realise that she wanted to concentrate on drawing. “My style is known as photorealism and most of my work focuses on animals, particularly horses.”
For the past year or so, Frances has been creating limited editions. She has a full year ahead of her, looking forward to a packed schedule of exhibitions, as well as taking on private work. She also hopes to move into book illustration. “I love what I do and am very happy that I can make a career of it,” she admits. “This is a big tree and I need to explore every branch.” For more information on Frances’s work

Very often there is also a sense of solitude, of individuals together but very much alone. John, who lives in Cromer, has been exhibiting at the Westcliffe Gallery, in Sheringham, for about 30 years now. His work is permanently on display there and from Saturday 10 to Saturday 24 May 2014 he will be mounting a solo exhibition, with about 50 or 60 pieces.

“Art was the only thing I was ever good at when I was at school,” he admits. “But I did have one teacher who particularly encouraged me and urged me to take part in competitions.” After school, John went to art college and then, worrying about making a living as an artist, trained as a graphic designer: “But I did not really take to typography and packaging design; I wanted to paint pictures.” It was after moving into the illustration

of scientific and technical journals, having moved to Guildford for work, that he came across the work of James McNeill Whistler. “He would take little panels of wood out with him and did these quirky little pictures on them in oil paint. I started doing the same myself and then people began to ask me for them.” Galleries soon picked up on the attraction of the pieces too, and before he knew it, John was exhibiting them. His work continued to develop and in 1979 he decided to return to his home county of Norfolk to paint full-time. “They say Norfolk does not lose its children and certainly I was always drawn back,” he says. “For me it is the perfect place to work. I tend to go for a walk on the beach each day and I do gain inspiration from my surroundings. “The Westcliffe Gallery has been incredibly supportive and I do appreciate having been able to work with them for all this time.” For more information on John’s work call 01263 824320 or visit www.westcliffegallery.com

Chairman of Suffolk Open Studios, and founder of ArtActiv, which runs workshops for children with disabilities and young people in Suffolk, he was originally in the police force and is self-taught. “It was not until I spent a lot of time helping my younger son draw a picture of an aeroplane that I started really trying it myself,” he explains. “My elder son encouraged me to buy some materials and I found it was something I really enjoyed.” After retiring from the police force in 2001, and starting to experiment with oils, Tom discovered his niche and began creating pictures that were full of drama and movement. Thoroughbred horse racing became a prominent
subject matter, as it was particularly suited to his style. Now working with Jayson Samuel, an energetic art agent, who promotes his work across the US, Tom has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles and Vermont. “My pictures do have a certain intensity,” he says. “With horses, my main influence has been Sir Alfred Munnings but I do also love the work of Vincent van Gogh. I admire the way he worked so quickly and applied his paint.” And he adds: “I like to keep trying out new techniques and using different materials. I have recently started doing some collage seascapes. “I think my work will keep evolving.” For more information on Tom’s work call 01379 783208 or visit www.artisandirectltd.net/artists/lund-lack or www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/l/lundlack

hen you ask Samuel Thomas about the appeal of his vibrant artwork he is unequivocal – they offer escapism. Samuel, who lives in Cromer, is only 26 years old yet already his pieces are creating a stir, offering something different to those looking to hang a little sunshine on the walls of their homes. “Escapism is a unifying theme in my paintings. There is often an element of the pursuit of something idyllic or dream-like. My work aims to offer a snapshot of a time and place that is euphoric and many of the scenes deliver
sunnier visions of the world, even on the darkest and moodiest days,” he explains. “David Hockney was an artist I especially liked growing up at school as he took the colours that you see in the Yorkshire countryside and enhanced their vibrancy, along with using patterns to emulate the rolling hills to celebrate the atmosphere of the place. In some ways I do the same for Norfolk.” Samuel, who sells much of his work through his website, but also exhibits in Cromer, Norwich and Southwold, became passionate about drawing and painting as a boy. At about the age of 17,
his style became more defined and he found that through using acrylics on canvas he was able to celebrate the world around him in a truly unique way, employing intense colour combinations and unique patterns. “My style has developed over time. As well as the art deco movement, the biggest influences on my work have been the likes of David Hockney and Roy Lichtenstein. I also admire Edward Hopper, particularly the way he captures light.” Samuel’s work varies in price – limited edition prints begin at about £95, while

originals are around £1,200. Samuel will also take on commissions, from £1,400. He has a greetings card range that is sold in independent retailers and galleries across the UK. Samuel admits that Norfolk and Suffolk landscapes have been hugely inspirational to him and lend themselves well to his slightly nostalgic, retro style. ‘I was bored and often uninspired growing up with the artwork I saw that depicted Norfolk,” says Samuel, who has raised a significant amount of money for charity through Wild in Art. “Norfolk for me is a beautiful and vibrant place, filled
with colour and pattern but I rarely ever saw this quality mirrored in artwork. I believe art should captivate the imagination and present to the viewer a unique viewpoint or interpretation of the world which a photograph cannot do. “This area is an ideal place to paint because it is so inspirational and I think that to a certain extent I took that for granted when I was growing up.” Pictures of Norfolk and Suffolk that capture that sense of nostalgia through Samuel’s dramatic, almost psychedelic, style include Fishermen of Cromer and Sunset Over Southwold.
“My artwork is not to everyone’s taste but I see that as a good thing – artwork that sits on the fence and is neither here nor there is in my opinion boring and forgettable,” he adds. “I wanted to celebrate Norfolk and Suffolk in an imaginative way, and I believe I have achieved that - employing the colours and patterns I saw in pop art, which captivated my senses.” For details of Samuel’s exhibitions or for more information about his work call 07818 620560 or visit www.samuelthomasart.co.uk

arm scones and freshly brewed tea, sunny afternoons watching the tennis and picnics out on the lush green grass. There is something very English about both Thorpeness and its hotel and golf club. The historic village, much of which was built as a holiday resort in the early 20th century, nestles in a world of its own. With its unique architecture, its boating lake (or Meare) and its coastal location, it is somewhere to escape to that captures all the nostalgia of summers of the past. And with its hotel, golf course and country club still very much at the heart of village life, it is a destination that still greatly appeals to golfers, wedding parties and holidaymakers alike. Paul Clouting, director of the Thorpeness Hotel and Golf Club, says those in the know have been coming here for years, later bringing their own
children and grandchildren with them. At the same time, others, who happen upon it for the first time, often find themselves returning time and time again too – to indulge in the village’s quiet seaside appeal and to enjoy its gentle pace of life. “We are fortunate enough to be on a fantastic part of the Suffolk Heritage Coast,” he says. “We also have so much history here – in the village itself and on the walls of our clubhouse or bar.” This particularly welcoming part of the hotel and club, which dates back to the creation of the resort, still features its wood-panelled walls displaying the names of competition winners, as well as the many trophies that have been awarded over the decades. Today members and guests still sit by a roaring fire in the colder months or just outside in the sunshine when the weather is fine, enjoying the likes of a freshly pulled pint or beer battered cod and chips. “What also makes us different is that we see ourselves as people’s favourite golf
club away from their own,” he continues. “Because our course is sand-based, golfers can play here all year round, and, as such, they come from Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Essex and beyond when they cannot play at home. The standard of our course means that we are able to attract three PGA events every year.” Designed by James Braid in 1922, the golf course offers a tough challenge for all levels of player. There is also a fullystocked Pro-Shop and professionals Frank Hill and Christopher Oldrey are on site to offer a full range of golf tuition packages. While still traditional in external appearance, the hotel itself ensures it offers visitors a high standard of accommodation. There are, for example, rooms in the Braid Lodge, which are ideal for groups, as well as other with Juliet balconies giving on to the golf course. While the hotel can accommodate private dining and conferences, its

packages for those wishing to have their celebration here. They can even have a marquee out on the grass right next to the beach, where champagne and canapés can be served.”
“We are known for our hospitality here,” says Paul. “We pride ourselves on our staff and on making sure our guests have an outstanding experience.”
The Country Club itself is a very flexible space, with an ambience of nostalgia that has become popular for modern day weddings. In the summer, tennis is also played on courts behind the attractive building, and snacks and teas are served inside.
Thorpeness Hotel and Golf Club is part of the TA Hotel Collection, which also runs Aldeburgh Bay Holidays. This part of the business owns and manages self-catering holiday homes, ensuring visitors seeking more independence can also be accommodated. Among these properties are apartments next to the hotel’s famous Country Club. Created when the village was first developed, this complex has also become a highly desirable setting for weddings.
“Thorpeness is unique,” Paul adds. “Those who come here to the hotel or golf club say they are made to feel welcome and are well looked after. “I don’t think there is anywhere else that offers everything we do, in such a wonderful location. This really is a very special place.” Words by Abigail Saltmarsh Images courtesy of Thorpeness Hotel & Golf Club

n 1910, Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie, a Scottish barrister, bought the area from north of Aldeburgh, up the coast and inland to Aldringham and Leiston, and created Thorpeness as it is today. The idea was that it would be a private holiday village to which he invited his friends and their families during the summer months. He built the country club, with its tennis courts, the golf course and a clubhouse, as well as many holiday homes. To hide the water tower, its tank was clad in wood to make it look like a small house. This is still known as the “House in the Clouds.” An artificial lake was created and today much of it still evocative of children’s book Peter Pan, which was written by Ogilvie’s friend JM Barrie, who is said to have spent time here.

hether your tastes lie in browsing interesting shops or discovering the past, there is plenty in Framlingham to keep you occupied for many a happy hour.

The Suffolk town appeals to visitors of all ages for its variety of activities and its situation at the heart of some of the county’s most beautiful countryside.
The town dates back to Anglo Saxon times and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1066. At that time it was made up of several manors, presented by William the Conqueror to Roger Bigod.
One of its great attractions is its castle, which was built between 1190 and 1210, and was at one time the refuge of Mary Tudor before she became Queen in 1553. Over the centuries, the castle was home the Bigods, Thomas Plantagenet and his descendants, the Mowbray Dukes of Norfolk and the Howard Dukes of Norfolk.

During this time, the town was an important economic centre. In around 1285, a market charter was granted to Framlingham and today the town still enjoys two market days every week. Here all sorts of items are sold from clothing and jewellery to fresh produce.
Restaurants and cafés also pride themselves on their use of local ingredients while the array of shops and boutiques sell artisan products and interesting and unusual foods, gifts and home accessories.

FRAMLINGHAM-B A SED ARCHITECT ROB PEARCE HAS GREAT EXPERIENCE IN WORKING WITH BEAUTIFUL OLD BUILDINGS, PRESERVING THEM AND MAKING THEM SUITABLE FOR 21ST CENTURY LIVING
ob Pearce believes he could not be in a better place to pursue his passion for building preservation and architectural design.
R
The Suffolk-based architect, who spent many years working with the National Trust, says East Anglia has a particularly rich heritage in beautiful buildings, with many fantastic examples still surviving today. “We have a lot of timber-framed buildings from the 16th century here,” he points out. “Most of them survived really quite well until the 1960s, when people started putting cement rendering on them and then the timbers started to perish. What I really enjoy is working with these sorts of buildings, bringing them back to life and watching them become vibrant again.”
Rob, a Royal Institute of British Architects accredited conservation architect, has run a family practice in the Suffolk town since 2011 but has 24 years’ experience working with historic buildings. “I do like to work with listed buildings and am a specialist in that area but I also do general work too. I do extensions and conversions, as well as preservation.”
Other work has seen him add a cuttingedge, contemporary extension to an oak-framed cottage, and he is currently working on an old barn, which the owners hope to transform into a sevenbedroom holiday property. “The biggest challenge here is that this is a split-level threshing barn and we want to create wheelchair access,” he explains.
Among Rob’s recent projects has been the creation of an oak staircase within Wortwell Mill. This was particularly challenging as the staircase had to be double-height and was inside an old Grade II Listed building.
“Working on projects like this can be a slow process but it is also extremely satisfying.”
“The Cut, in Halesworth, was another interesting project. Here we converted derelict old maltings into a media centre, which was very exciting.”

et in a former Georgian hunting lodge, which was built in the 18th century, Bedford Lodge Hotel has long been known for the quality of its accommodation. Now the exclusive establishment, which is situated in the historic home of British horse racing, the Suffolk town of Newmarket, is offering an even more contemporary experience within its character-filled walls. The establishment, which first became a hotel in the 1940s, and nestles in three acres of secluded rose gardens, has just opened a spa, offering an array of beauty treatments and a selection of wellbeing experiences. Spa manager Anna Ramsay explains the new facility was launched in 2013 and is housed in a Victorian property adjacent to the hotel, which still presents many original features, including a grand staircase. “Bedford Lodge Hotel is privately owned and offers a perfect blend of old and new. It retains the charm and character of a country house but also embodies the modern luxury and comfort of an exquisite, boutique hotel,” she says. “With a wide range of facilities, a menu of bespoke treatments and a team of 50 highly skilled employees, who are dedicated to providing the highest standard of customer care, the five star spa appeals to people who are looking for a relaxing and indulgent experience.”
breaks, including the Sleep Package, Recovery Break, Couples Retreat, Mid-week Indulgence and Spa Sunday package. Open to hotel guests and day visitors, the Spa offers the chance to luxuriate in the mezzanine hydrotherapy pool, with its five different water experiences, or to take in the fresh air, while enveloped in the warm waters of the roof-top hot tub. Guests can experience a cleansing and detoxing Arabian rasul mud treatment or stimulate their senses with a combination of lights and water in the experiential showers. “The Spa also features a state-of-the-art thermal area, comprising a steam room, sauna and hammam – a decadent relaxation room – as well as 10 spacious and beautifully styled treatment rooms and a therapy room for visiting cosmetic doctors offering non-invasive procedures. “The treatment menu has been created in co-operation with British spa brand, ESPA and offers a complete range of natural, holistic and results driven treatments for the face, body and mind. Our Finishing Touches Studio provides manicures and pedicures using spa brand Jessica,” she says. “We also offer a range of signature treatments, which are exclusive to the Spa, and include our lavender poultice massage and a Balinese massage with hot stones.” Photography courtesy of Bedford Lodge Hotel For more information on call 01638 676130 or

ts landscapes were captured in oil by the likes of Thomas Gainsborough, Alfred Munnings and John Nash and today this part of the world is still known as Constable Country after one of its most famous sons. Those wishing to follow in the footsteps of the great artists and admire views that have changed little since they first appeared on canvas can take the Stour Valley Path. A long distance path that follows a 60-mile route beside the River Stour, the walk takes hikers through the most spectacular Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire countryside, and along the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Today the preservation of the route, which begins near Newmarket and finishes at Cattawade, near Manningtree, is the responsibility of the Dedham Vale AONB and Stour Valley Project. Project officer Emma Black explains that this
year the path celebrates its 20th anniversary and that the group hopes more visitors than ever will decide to follow at least part of it. “Our main purpose is to conserve and enhance the landscape and to provide facilities for people to enjoy this area, while also having regard for those who live and work there,” she explains. “The Dedham Vale and Stour Valley make up a particularly stunning part of this country – a perfect rural idyll, with chocolate box villages, undulating farmland, beautiful woodland and great big skies. We want to preserve it for future generations to enjoy.”
Starting at Newmarket Racecourse, the path passes through or close to places, including Clare, Cavendish, Long Melford, Sudbury, Nayland, Stoke By Nayland, East Bergholt and Dedham. Landmarks to look out for include Stoke By Nayland Church and Flatford Mill, which often feature in Constable’s paintings, and Clare Castle. “There is also so much wildlife to see,” says Emma. “There are lots of beautiful cricket bat willow and black poplar trees in this area, as well as chiffchaffs, badger cubs and all sorts of beautiful butterflies in spring.” Photography courtesy of Dedham Vale AONB and
The sign-posted path, which is maintained by volunteers, takes people on a gentle walk. Walkers can tackle the path in stretches and then take a bus or train back to a starting point. There are also many different walks, including some that are circular, which venture off the Stour Valley Path.

rom ancient manor houses to glorious stately homes, there are all sorts of magnificent places in which to get married these days.
At Ickworth, in Suffolk, Sodexo Prestige oversees weddings for those wishing to host their special day in the beautiful West Wing or the immaculate parkland.
With more locations now being approved for marriage licences, those seeking a historic setting for their big day are spoiled for choice.
Charlotte Boulton, sales co-ordinator, explains why the National Trust property is so popular with couples.
Norfolk and Suffolk have many splendid locations and, as such, those from elsewhere in the country – and even from abroad – often travel here for their celebration. The spectacular scenery, exquisite architecture and general efficiency and friendliness of all those involved in helping to create the momentous day seem to offer the perfect package. In recent years, the National Trust has opened up many of its historic buildings and gardens to those looking for a beautiful and unusual place to be married.
“The house itself is hidden by trees and you do not see the full extent of its beauty really until you go round to the back. When we show it to people they often exclaim when they see it for the first time,” she says. “It is just such a lovely place and people are drawn to the history of the house, as well as the views. Every National Trust building where weddings can be held is very different and Ickworth certainly has its own unique appeal.” Ickworth, near Bury St Edmunds, which sits in grounds of approximately 1,800 acres, was home to the Hervey family for just over five centuries (1432 to 1956).

UNIQUELY AWAY SPRING 2014
Initially, the family lived in a Tudor manor house beside Ickworth church but this eventually fell into decay through lack of upkeep and it had to be demolished. The building of the Rotunda began in 1795 but it wasn’t completed until 1841. Frederick Augustus Hervey, the EarlBishop and fourth Earl of Bristol, was captivated by Italian art, architecture and sculpture, and built the magnificent building to house his collection and his estranged wife and family. The basic design of Ickworth Park can be traced to about 1700, when the first Earl of Bristol set out to create a park worthy of the Hervey name. He proceeded to carve out this new landscape over 31 years. He demolished buildings and grassed over agricultural boundaries. Deer were reintroduced in 1706. The second Earl continued his father’s work on the park between 1769 and 1776 by employing renowned landscape architect Lancelot “Capability” Brown.
The National Trust acquired Grade I Listed Ickworth in 1956. Today the West Wing is used by Sodexo Prestige for weddings and other events and celebrations while the East Wing is the privately-run Ickworth Hotel. “The Gallery in the West Wing is on the second floor and is a beautiful place to have the wedding ceremony,” says Charlotte. “This has a raised balcony area overlooking the parkland to the front and the formal gardens and terrace to the rear. It provides the perfect backdrop for wedding breakfasts, private dining and balls for up to 220 guests. “Then the Court is also licensed and is ideal for smaller events.” On the ground floor is the West Wing Restaurant, for day visitors, this can be hired early in the morning or after 6pm. Marquees can be erected out on the lawn and the Orangery, overlooking the formal gardens, is ideal for receptions.
“There are all sorts of possibilities at Ickworth and we are more than happy to discuss different packages with the bride and groom,” she adds. “This is a very special place to hold weddings and by using the house and gardens in this way we are helping the National Trust to preserve it for future generations.” Photography courtesy of the West Wing, Ickworth For more information call 01284 735957, email ickworth.house@sodexo.com or visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ickworth

ith its beautiful white canopy stretched out above a manicured lawn, Lunar Stretch Tents’ spectacular new marquee is a breath-taking addition to any significant event. The stylish, state-of-the-art tent brings grace and sophistication to all sorts of settings while also offering the ultimate in weather-proof space. Seth Maclot, who has recently launched the business with colleague Chris Howard, explains the new tents are not only ground-breaking in their appearance, but also their versatility.
“These tents are an object of beauty but they are also incredibly functional,” he says. “They can be set up in all manner of configurations, within all sorts of different spaces. They can be arranged with the sides up or down and with the right amount of space for anything from a small, intimate celebration right up to a large party or occasions.” Seth, who has a background in setting up and running stages at major outdoor events, teamed up with Chris, who has a business background, after deciding to venture further into the outdoor events field.
“As soon as we saw these tents for the first time we were really impressed. We realised they would bring something quite unique to Norfolk and Suffolk, a superior comfort and elegance, and that they would offer incredible scope for all sorts of special occasions, especially weddings.” The eye-catching marquees look almost sculptural once erected. They sit beautifully in a range of locations, from immaculate stretches of grass in front of stately homes to beautiful rural settings and character-filled urban spaces.

ast, furious and immense fun – those keen to celebrate their big day with an unusual hen or stag experience might like to consider the options available in Suffolk.

Marcus Gladwell, owner of Southwold’s high speed boat Coastal Voyager has teamed up with other activity providers in the area to offer a colourful menu of exciting recreational pursuits to choose from. “We have got together with Ellough Park and High Lodge to offer packages for stag and hen parties, as well as other visiting groups,” he says. “There is a menu for them to choose from and we can work to put together a fun-filled day for everyone.” Coastal Voyager, which was built in New Zealand to a special design, has 12 seats and can take passengers on a variety of trips. These range from a high speed sea blast, which is a 30-minute tour of Solebay, to river cruises and seal trips.
Journeys up the River Blyth give voyagers the opportunity to spot a range of bird life while seal voyages offer the chance to watch grey and common seals in their natural habitat at Scroby Sands, explains Marcus, who has a marine career of more than 30 years, and is an RYA instructor, responsible for all training at Southwold Lifeboat. “We can offer real diversity when it comes to trips out on the water,” he says. “There might be the opportunity to drive the boat, for example, or we can put together voyages where we stop somewhere for lunch.”
High Lodge offers a range of activities, including clay pigeon shooting. Overseen by champion shooter, John Bidwell, the ground has been voted a top UK facility in a national poll. It is also classed as a premier plus ground by the Clay Pigeon Shooting Association. Marcus adds: “We can come up with bronze, silver or gold packages for different groups depending on how much time they want to spend on the water, karting and shooting. We can tailor-make the day or weekend away for them, also including added extras if they wish, such as VIP passes to nightclubs in Norwich.
Ellough Park Raceway, near Beccles, is East Anglia’s only British Championship karting circuit. It is flood-lit and boasts fast technical and flowing corners, which were designed by professional kart racing drivers. It is headed up by Richard Lock, a former racer himself.
“If those interested call or email we can discuss their requirements and put together an exciting experience for them that they will remember for a long time to come.”

The 18th century country house is set in 120 acres of parkland, which also features the ruined church of St Margaret’s. A wedding at the hall closely with other wedding suppliers, such as Norfolkbased Chair Covers and More, explains owner Luke Grice. “There are all sorts of possibilities for those wishing to host a wedding at Bayfield Hall,” he says. “Civil ceremonies can be held in the Long Room and can accommodate up to 80 guests. This opens up on to the south-facing lawn, overlooking the lake and park, which is a wonderful
place for champagne. “Marquees can be erected on the old Victorian bowling green, where more guests can be accommodated later
for a reception.” Luke adds: “Viewings of Bayfield Hall can be arranged by appointment. This is a truly exclusive venue, which is a very beautiful and private place to hold a wedding.”

o C’s locally brewed ale is a popular choice at weddings in Norfolk and Suffolk. Brewed by Jo Coubrough herself, in North Norfolk, it can be delivered in various cask sizes in the quantities required, and set up at a reception or celebration. “I can do this with all three types of my beer – Norfolk Kiwi, Bitter Old Bustard and Knot Just another IPA,” says Jo. “And people can have mini casks or bottles as well.” Jo, who has recently launched a range of gift merchandise on her website, sells her beer in pubs across Norfolk and further afield,
as well as at beer festivals and farmers’ markets. “North Norfolk is renowned for its real ale and the area provides some of the best malting barley in the world due to its soil and climate,” she adds. “My brewery is supplied by its own bore hole and uses maris otter barley, grown in neighbouring fields, which is malted at the nearby Crisp Maltings. “People are sometimes surprised that Jo C’s is brewed by a woman but brewing was always traditionally a woman’s job – and it was these ladies who inspired me to start my own brewery.”

appy couples looking for something a little different for their wedding tables are turning to Norfolk cake maker Emma Thorburn. Emma, who sources all her ingredients locally, is coming up with all sorts of personalised versions of her famous Love Pots. “These come in jars and are a cross between a cake and a pudding,” she says. “They can be decorated in all sorts of ways, with anything from a luxurious butter cream topping to sprinklings of snowflakes and glitter.” The Love Pots are proving popular alternatives to traditional cakes and puddings. They are also sometimes used as table settings.
H
“They make a great centre piece and then afterwards people can eat them or take them home without them getting squashed,” she explains. The pots can be decorated to tie in with themes. They can be given as wedding favours with seeds or tealights, to allow the jars to be used again, and some come in organza bags, explains Emma, who is responsible for making Holkham Hall’s famous gingerbread house. “Sometimes couples choose to put their own personalised messages in them. I can really do anything with them that the bride and groom want.” Photography courtesy of Buns of Fun For more information call 07932 874576 or visit bunsoffun.vpweb.co.uk

intage weddings are all the rage - and so what better way to arrive at the ceremony than retro style? Husband and wife team Hannah and Simon Holbrook launched Retro Campers Norfolk in 2010 and have been helping happy couples start out on their journeys together ever since. “I think a VW camper puts the fun back into a wedding,” says Hannah. “It is great to have something different on your wedding day, something that catches people’s eye and which for many evokes memories from their childhood.” The couple have six different campers available for hire for short breaks and holidays, as well as weddings.
V
Each is different in colour and style, and is named after a hit song from the year it was made. “We offer chauffeured wedding hire, as well as self drive hire, where the
customer can have the camper all weekend if they wish. The campers are ideal for weddings because they can seat up to six and have plenty of space for the dress too – and they also keep

F
The company can line barns or other buildings and offers special winter wedding marquees. “We can arrange catering, flowers, live entertainment and music, discos, balloons, fireworks and photographers but are equally happy to work with other suppliers too,” he says. “We are there to suit the requirements of the couple and believe nothing is too difficult to achieve.”

wedding is such an important occasion that it is vital to ensure you have the very best photography, according to Jemma Watts, of Pearl Pictures. Jemma, who has 14 years experience of shooting weddings, urges people not to be tempted to ask a friend with a good camera to take on the responsibility. “A professional knows how to shoot a wedding; they will be one step ahead and will know what types of shots are required. They will know how to be invisible and how to capture the emotional moments and the candid shots,” she says. “They will understand how to get the right pictures for the style of your wedding and will have

the skills to interact with all your guests.” Jemma believes it is important for the couple to be able to trust their photographer so they can relax and enjoy their big day. They will have spent time with them beforehand, discussing the arrangements and finding out about significant guests. “It is really important that everything goes smoothly on the day and that you get the photographs you really want,” she says. “After all, this is an occasion you will never be able to shoot again.” Photography courtesy of Pearl Pictures For more information on Jemma’s photography call 07930 385115 or visit www.pearl-pictures.com

oming from a design background, Mandy Leeson loves beautiful pieces for the home, particularly those from Scandinavian brands. After making a lifestyle change, she bought her shop in Woodbridge, with a view to sourcing distinctive items and showcasing them to those interested in design and keen to find unusual pieces. “I now import Scandinavian brands and work particularly closely with the Danish Craft Council to introduce new young designers into the shop,” she explains. “I want to offer something a little bit different.” Mandy, who stocks home accessories from the likes of Ceannis, offers small items
and gifts, as well as large pieces of furniture. She also offers an upholstery service. Mandy loves colour and texture, and tries to keep the shop fresh by introducing new collections as often as possible. “I do like beautifully crafted, hand-made items,” she adds. “The showroom is evolving and changing all the time but I always ensure I have pieces in that I really like myself – the items that I stock and display in the shop are about creating a lifestyle and that make people smile.”

ikki Towler has been immersed in the antiques world for more than 20 years now but it is only fairly recently that she has decided to formally specialise in items for the kitchen. Now she focuses on unusual Georgian and Victorian items in pine, from pieces as small as butter knives and bread boards right up to chests
of drawers and cupboards. “I only ever sell completely genuine items that I would be able to have in my own home. It is all British and ranges in price from about £12 for something like a whisk to anything over £150 for a piece of furniture, depending on what it is.” Mikki, who finds her pieces through a variety of sources, including auctions, largely operates through her
website the Antique Kitchen but does also sell to trade from her base in Norfolk and through Waterside Antiques in Ely. Current trends are for attractive, free-standing pieces of furniture for the kitchen as well as smaller objects of kitchenalia, which are bought by avid collectors but also make unique presents, particularly for weddings.
“One of my Georgian plate racks was recently bought for television programme the Paradise,” she says. “Others have gone right across the world. I often send items to America – the Americans love early kitchenalia too.” Photography courtesy of the Antique Kitchen For more information call 07831 389843 or visit www.theantiquekitchen.co.uk

James Robertson, codirector of the company, along with his brother Martin, explains that both his father and grandfather spent time working in West Africa and Indonesia. “We started offering teak garden furniture to the public in 1991,” he says. “The timber is Grade A teak, which is sourced from sustainable plantations in Indonesia.” The solid pieces, which can also be made in iroko, from West Africa, are handfinished and quality controlled in Suffolk. By design aving trained and worked in London, Holly Pagani returned home to Norfolk to bring her skills to the many beautiful properties of the county.
H
FROM SOURCING A BLIND FOR A SINGLE ROOM TO REFURBISHING A WHOLE HOUSE, INTERIOR DESIGNER HOLLY PAGANI CAN BRING HER SKILLS TO PROJECTS RANGING FROM A NEW HOME FOR A NEWLY WED COUPLE TO AN ENTIRE HISTORIC PROPERTY OR BUSINESS
From her base in Norwich, she runs Salt Interior Design, a bespoke interior design service, offering advice on everything from a single room colour scheme right up to major design projects.
She has access to leading brands, such as Colefax and Fowler, Osborne & Little, Zoffany, Paint & Paper Library and GP & J Baker, and has designed interiors for country homes and townhouses, as well as restaurants, show homes and hotels.
“I like to think of it as offering people a helping hand,” she says. “I have a friendly approach and can do as little or as much as people would like. “As an interior designer, I can source and supply a wide range of beautiful fabric, wallpaper and paint, as well as furniture, accessories, lights and other products and materials.” Holly, who is half Italian and spends a lot of time in Italy, gains inspiration from all over Europe. She likes a relaxed style reflecting both the property owner and the character of the building but she will always work closely with clients to ensure their own preferences are met.
“I am currently working with the Globe Inn at Wells-next-the-Sea, which is undergoing a complete refurbishment and will be adding new bedrooms later in the spring. We are working to a classic British theme with a twist – a gentle seaside look, with some beautiful blues and deep greens. We are bringing in natural linens and all the rooms will all have an individual style, and there will be some lovely feature walls.” Holly, who predicts that this spring will see bolder prints returning to the high street, as well as tones including apricot and turquoise, relishes her work with properties in Norfolk and Suffolk.
“I love the fact that people here are much more involved in working with me on the design process than they are in London. They are more relaxed and are happy to work with their antiques and family items, which all adds to the eclectic look and helps to create the appearance of having evolved over time,” Holly says. “I am passionate about what I do but I am also very approachable so this suits me very well. I like working on both residential and commercial projects, bringing versatility and individuality to everything I do to ensure each interior design is unique and personal to that client.” Words by Abigail Saltmarsh Photography courtesy of Salt Interior Design For more information on Salt Interior Design call 07714 321987 or visit www.saltinteriors.co.uk

ack in the Middle Ages all manner of goods were shipped in and out of King’s Lynn and, as the centuries passed, the West Norfolk town remained an important hub for industries including grain, iron, timber, glass and rope. Originally known as Bishop’s Lynn, the town was once part of the manor of the Bishop of Norwich. In the 16th century, however, when Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries, the town was taken over by the crown and became known as King’s Lynn or Lynn Regis. From the 17th century onwards, it
became very prosperous and many buildings from the era can still be seen today. Wander the streets and take in the fascinating architecture, ranging from the 900 year-old St Margaret’s Church to the iconic Custom House, which has stood lookout over the port for some 300 years. Here visitors will now find the Tourist Information Centre, as well as displays about mariners, including Horatio Nelson, who was born nearby, merchants, customs men and smugglers. Pass by the town hall, with its famous chequered façade, which dates back to 1421. Children will be entranced by the Old Gaol House here. Visitors can take a

Another place well worth a few hours is the Lynn Museum. Find out more about the history of the area here and see the fantastic hoard of Iceni gold coins and the colourful Victorian fairground gallopers.
King’s Lynn is also known for its 15th century arts centre, its markets and its shops. It has a spectrum of high street shops and lots of cafes and restaurants.
Those keen to discover more about town’s fishing past should make time for the Trues Yard Fishing Heritage Museum while arts lovers might enjoy St George’s Guildhall. Now owned by the National Trust, this is believed to be the largest surviving medieval guildhall in England. Since 1442, stage productions have been held here and

Take a stroll around the grounds of Blickling Hall, in North Norfolk, from February onwards to enjoy the bursts of yellow spring colour.
Take in the beauty of the ruins at Castle Acre and enjoy the daffodils at the same time.
Wander through Norwich and take in the many fine displays of daffodils, from the splashes of colour in Chapelfield Gardens through to the glorious blooms in the Cathedral Close.
Visit the wildlife garden, café, wildflower nursery and nature reserve at Natural Surroundings, near Holt, to see daffodils this spring.
At this time of year you should find daffodils in the woodland areas, as well as in the formal gardens. Also look out for primroses, crocuses, bluebells, hellebores and azaleas. The Blickling Estate is one of Norfolk’s top visitor attractions. Once the home of the Boleyn family, it features an impressive Jacobean house. The grounds stretch to nearly 5,000 acres and feature areas of parkland that are perfect for walking, cycling and picnicking. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ blickling-estate
The remains of the priory here in West Norfolk make up one of the largest and best preserved monastic sites in England. Dating back to 1090, Castle Acre was the home of the first Cluniac order of monks in England. There is much to see, including the beautiful west end church gable, the prior’s lodgings and the recreated herb garden.
You could take a stroll through the fine city and be sure to happen upon swathes of the spring flowers. If the sun is out, why not head down to the River Wensum and take in the picturesque scenery along the footpath?
From February onwards look out for sunny bursts of daffodils close to the ruins and under the trees in the surrounding area.
Here, under the trees, and on the grass, you’ll find a multitude of the flowers, standing out against the attractive architecture and brightening up the river banks.

PARK LIFE F
or more than 20 years now visitors have been coming to Ufford Park Woodbridge, Hotel, Golf and Spa to relax, play golf and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The establishment, which was first opened in 1992 by current owners Colin and Shirley Aldous, is set in 120 acres of historic parkland, close to Woodbridge. Described at “the gateway to Suffolk’s Heritage Coast,” it has become a destination for those keen to experience the attractions of this corner of the county as well as something of a sanctuary in itself. With 90 en suite bedrooms, an 18-hole championship golf course, a restaurant and bar, health club and spa, it has evolved to offer a spectrum of luxury facilities, all in one location.
Director Tarnia Robertson explains the hotel has seen major extension and enhancement since it was first opened. The most recent addition is a luxury thermal suite, which features a five-metre hydro-pool and associated heat and cooling steam and sauna experiences. “Our spa offers that little extra that people are looking for when staying at a hotel,” she adds. “The thermal suite is based on some of the ancient rituals of bathing: the body is treated using a series of heat and cooling experiences. Our beauty therapists are now able to provide lots more treatments, including our very popular hot stone massage. “We have been a finalist in the Good Spa Guide Awards for two years running.” Debbie Ratcliffe, marketing manager at Ufford Park, says the health club
features a gym and swimming pool and is open to members and non-members. “We have encouraging and professional qualified personal trainers,” she says. “We often receive comments about our non-intimidating environment and we welcome everybody to have a tour, before signing up for membership.” Those keen on fitness may well also be drawn to the 18-hole, 71 par, awardwinning golf course. This is ideal for all abilities, including experienced players and has an excellent natural drainage system, which ensures greens are playable all year round. “We were voted as a Top 20 Winter Golf Course by Today’s Golfer. Whether you are a novice player or have a low handicap our onsite Doctorgolf teaching academy can help you practice your

WITH ITS VIEWS OUT ACROSS THE MAGNIFICENT DEBEN VALLEY, UFFORD PARK WOODBRIDGE, HOTEL, GOLF AND SPA IS AN IDYLLIC PLACE TO ENJOY THE GENTLE PACE OF LIFE swing and give you great tips,” she continues. “We have pay and play packages for all to enjoy, and also offer society and corporate packages.” The establishment also has a two-storey floodlit driving range and an American Golf Superstore. The picturesque surroundings and different function rooms, all with panoramic views, make Ufford Park a popular choice for weddings. “The Deben Suite is our largest function room and has its own bar and two private balconies. We are licensed to hold civil ceremonies, civil partnerships and renewals. During the summer months, our Wedding Pavilion is the perfect location for arrival drinks and canapés and we also have an area of land suitable for a marquee.”
The scenic location of Ufford Park also makes it the perfect base from which to explore Suffolk. From here it is easy to enjoy the colourful shopping of Woodbridge and Snape Maltings, to explore the local castles of Framlingham and Orford or to walk in Rendlesham Forest or along the River Deben. Coastal attractions such as Aldeburgh and Southwold are also within easy reach. Those visiting the area often pause for refreshment at the hotel’s bar or restaurant, both of which are open to non-residents. “Our Park Restaurant has views across the golf course and specialises in modern British cuisine. We use locally sourced produce wherever we can. We have recently revamped all our menus in the bar area and this summer have
noticed more people enjoying our afternoon teas,” says Tarnia. Ufford Park prides itself on being accessible to those with disabilities and welcoming to those wishing to bring children or dogs. “Ufford Park offers everything under one roof for all ages – activities, food and drink, a family day out or a break,” adds Tarnia. “We think this is because as soon as people walk in they feel comfortable and at ease. They can tell Ufford Park is family-owned and run by the sheer friendliness of all the staff.” Photography courtesy of Ufford Park Woodbridge For more information on Ufford Park Woodbridge, Hotel, Golf and Spa call 01394 383555 or visit www.uffordpark.co.uk

It is just a few minutes’ walk from sandy beaches, shops, pubs and restaurants.” The cottage has three bedrooms, an open plan kitchen and dining room, a sitting room and a television room. “As with all our cottages we offer a heat and eat service, which gives people the opportunity to pre-order freshly cooked meals ready to just pop into the

We are passionate about our green credentials and also want to offer the highest levels of comfort, with the cottages as warm as the guests would like them to be.” The family, who moved to the site for a change of lifestyle, renovated the former farm buildings and created the four and five star cottages themselves. They still live on site, where they are on hand to offer any help or advice required. “There are so many wonderful places to visit nearby and guests can also walk in the countryside from here. A former cricketer, who played for Surrey, Middlesex, Glamorgan and England, he is married to Sarah, with 17 year-old triplets Joshua, Adam and Hannah. He has another daughter, Nichola, who lives in Ireland with his grandchildren Mollie and Alfie, and the family have a black Labrador called Ziggy...
What do you enjoy doing in your leisure time? I enjoy playing golf, walking (running again too – now that some weight has come off), playing the guitar, crosswords, drinking real ale, and watching my children in their athletic or arts pursuits. Where do you like to go on holiday and why? We like activity holidays, particularly walking. This year it was the Norwegian fjords, while previously we have been to the Swiss Alps and the Lake District. We also like southern Italy. And of course, East Anglia, both Southwold and North Norfolk.
Courtesy of the Guardian
When did you first discover Norfolk and Suffolk? About 30 years ago, I began coming to see friends in Bury St Edmunds. For the past 20 years, my friends and I have made trips once a year to play golf at Hunstanton and Brancaster. About seven years ago, Sarah and I bought a cottage near Southwold. What do you most look forward to doing on your visits? Just being around Southwold and the environs. The dog just loves the beach, the sea and the walks – and I would kill for Adnams ale! I think the Lord Nelson in Southwold has to be my favourite pub. Are there any other locally produced foods or drink that you particularly enjoy? Mrs T’s fish and chips, on
Southwold Harbour, are the best ever – something to do with the location as much as the quality of the fish. In Norfolk, I love beer from the Woodforde’s brewery, particularly Wherry, and, in September, I can’t wait to get hold of Brancaster mussels and Cromer crabs. Have you any particular memories of your trips that you would like to share? The golfing trips are always wonderful, no matter the weather. We have stayed at the Rose and Crown, in Snettisham, for many years now and they look after us very well. I shall always treasure the time spent with the children in Southwold, with the beach and dunes, the pier, the crabbing and walks to Walberswick and Dunwich. Sarah loves the independent Aldeburgh Bookshop. Which parts of Norfolk or Suffolk would you recommend to the first-time visitor? I’m biased, of course, but Southwold is so nice, the kind of seaside resort I remember from my own childhood. And I love north Norfolk, not just for the golf but also for the spectacular saltmarshes, bird life and incredible beaches that stretch to the horizon at low tide. What is so special about Norfolk and Suffolk that you return each year? Whether I am playing golf or walking, just being there rejuvenates me.

UNIQUELY AWAY EARLY SPRING 2014
A GOOD SPORT
CATCHING THE WIND MICHAEL SHARROD TALKS TO UNIQUELY AWAY ABOUT HIS PASSION FOR KITE BUGGYING Can you tell us a little about yourself? I have been chairman of the Suffolk Kite Flyers Club for two years now and have been power kite flying for six years. I live in Suffolk and think it’s a great place to be. It is fantastic for kiteing as there are lots of grass areas to fly on, as well as great beaches along the coast too. What drew you to the sport? I started buggying on my local playing field in Haverhill. I was taking the dogs for a walk and saw a (now very good) friend kiteing at our local playing field – and seeing him jumping 6ft off the floor and going along at speed drew me to the sport. What makes it so enjoyable? This is a great way to get your adrenaline flowing, if you like going fast. Also, the kiteing community is a great bunch of people to socialise with.
How experienced are you? Have you competed? I am still learning every time I go flying and have not competed yet but hope to in next year’s competitions, which are held all over the UK. What makes this a good place for kite buggying? We have some lovely beaches in Suffolk and Norfolk and if the wind in right then they can make for a great day’s flying. Where are the best places in the country to do it? I would say that Suffolk (Rougham Airfield) is the best place to fly. However, as long as there is wind and a good safe site, then there are many clubs and sites all over the UK that are worth trying out.
Can anyone learn to do it? How physically fit do you have to be? Yes anyone can do it. We have members as young as seven and as old as 70 or 80. However, I would say that you do have to be quite fit as it is quite physical. It is a great way to exercise. What advice would you give someone considering taking up the sport? Find your local club and talk to them about having a trial session. Do not go out and buy a kite and buggy until you are sure this is a sport for you. If you see someone flying, don’t be afraid to go and speak to them. Suffolk Kite Flyers Club always welcomes anyone who would like to come and have a go. For more information visit www.skfc.co.uk

With charm and wit, it tells the story of a terrifying and joyful journey in pursuit of love, wisdom and happiness. UNIQUELY AWAY EARLY SPRING 2014
In the know the region you often take for granted, but visitors wish they had on their doorstep.
When did you first start singing and at what stage did you realise you wanted to make a career of it? My first foray into music was with the Norfolk Youth Music Theatre, who I was with for eight years. As a young girl I also spent time on stages at the Maddermarket Theatre, Norwich Playhouse, Cromer Pavilion and Theatre Royal.
Nina Baker, Pianist, singer and songwriter. Runnerup in MTV’s Brand New for 2013 Unsigned. Were you born and brought up in Norfolk? Sure was - I am a Norwich girl through and through. My home is in Wymondham but for work I am based in the Midlands – it is just a lot easier to get up and down the country from a central start. I return to Norfolk every week when performances and engagements allow. It is probably the only place I can turn off for any amount of time. In your opinion what makes the county so appealing to visitors? Having spent three years on the road, the first thing that strikes me every time I peel off on to the A11 is the vast open space and the postcard landscapes. I think Norfolk has done very well to keep its natural assets relatively unspoiled, something that as a native to
How would you describe your singing style? I would love to be able to pick a word that sums it up but three years on I still struggle! I have been likened to “Alanis Morissette” on a piano or “a really angry Kate Bush!” Which other singers have influenced you most? I was brought up on a cocktail of Motown and jazz, so my initial influences came from the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone and an early Stevie Wonder. Modern day, I don’t think there will be another artist quite like Amy Winehouse. I have recently become friends with Mitch Winehouse, Amy’s dad, and was very privileged to attend the Amy Winehouse Foundation event held at the Dorchester. What do you consider to be your greatest successes to date? It would be very easy to state the exposure on MTV and with the BBC, but on a personal level finishing the album is my greatest success, as there was a very real possibility it was not going to get finished. I took six months out when my dad needed emergency heart surgery – thank you to the NNUH and Papworth hospitals, I owe you the world.
cracking establishments here, particularly in villages off the beaten track. I have fond memories of eating chips on the harbour wall at Wells-next-the-Sea as a little girl, so I try to do this at least once a year. There are a couple of shops in the Norwich Lanes where I get my on and off-stage wardrobes – I go there a lot! What would you suggest people do if they have just one day to spend in Norfolk? You could easily spend a day walking around Norwich centre and not even see half of it. For me the walk across Holkham Bay is unrivalled and there are some lovely trails on the coast either side of Sea Palling. Tell us about what you believe to be some of Norfolk’s hidden gems? South Norfolk and Breckland are very close to my heart and as a keen cyclist there are some great rides in the triangle between Diss, Thetford and Swaffham, which take you through stunning scenery and beautiful villages. Also, dinner at Wymondham Railway Station is a must, but I won’t spoil the surprise for anyone who has never been. Have you ever written a song about Norfolk life? Yes I have! There is song we recorded about being on the road and longing for those things you associate with home – the early morning market, the sun rising above the Abbey, eating chips under the Market Cross, the cobbled streets and crooked inns. It says that no matter how long you are away, the place always remains the same. It did not make it on to this album, but who knows, maybe album two... Nina Baker has just released her debut single Single Bed and finished recording her debut album Quite
