Spring is approaching and with it comes the third issue of

Uniquely AWAY

As the new year begins and spring approaches we all start making plans for the coming months. For some, this means thinking about major events - weddings and holidays, perhaps – while for others, it could mean planning exciting days out and considering visits to beautiful parts of the country not yet explored. In this Spring issue of Uniquely Away we have made a few suggestions we hope might help you with your plans for the coming year. We have dedicated one section of the magazine to weddings. Norfolk and Suffolk have some exquisite venues and superb suppliers – and, indeed, are so enticing that many from outside the area choose to celebrate their big day here. As usual, the magazine also includes features on seasonal produce. In this issue we highlight the bounty of our seas and the fresh shellfish available at this time of year. Once again we also suggest places to visit, with Woodbridge and the Bure Valley taking centre stage, and, of course, we showcase some of the counties’ fabulous arts and crafts, and outstanding photography. Please do enter our wonderful competitions to win a night away and a delicious meal and let us know if you have any suggestions for our forthcoming issues. We hope you enjoy the magazine. lorious sunshine or driving rain, the fishermen of Brancaster Staithe are out on the marshes of North Norfolk every morning, tending to their produce.

G

The men lay the mussel seed in the channels, making sure it is submerged by the sea water, and, as it grows, they nurture it. The mussels are usually harvested after about two years.

From The White Horse, a restaurant and hotel renowned for its fish and seafood, it is possible to watch them out in the distance, as they clean, sort and bag their delicacies, some of which are destined for tables just a couple of hundred yards away.

“This is the perfect place to do this,” says Cyril. “There are so many nutrients in the marshes and there is a unique water flow because of the tides here.

Father and son team Cyril and Ben Southerland have been growing mussels out on the salty flats for decades and bring up some 30 to 40 different species in their bags.

Cyril’s son, Ben, initially went off to university after school but the lure of the coastal life was too much for him.

“I’ve been doing this for 48 years now, since I was 18, and would not want to do anything else,” says Cyril.

“This year has been a particularly good one.”

“I came back when I was 22 and have not regretted it at all,” he admits. “It is cold and it is wet sometimes but nothing beats the fresh air and being out on the marshes.”

here are a number of outlets across Norfolk and Suffolk, where customers can buy fresh fish and shellfish direct from those who catch or grow it. At the Cley Smokehouse, for example, they sell produce brought up on the beaches of North Norfolk. This includes lobster landed from their own boat. Everything is then prepared in the shop, with some of the foods smoked on site. For more information call 01263 740282 or visit www.cleysmokehouse.com

yster farmer Richard Loose grows his shellfish in Brancaster Harbour, in a creek just to the side of Scolt Head Island. He has been doing this since the mid 1970s – and before that, he fished for mussels and whelk. “My father was a whelk fisherman – and his father before him,” he says.

Richard brings the oysters up from the water in his boat to wash them and put them through his purification tanks. They then go out to restaurants, such as The White Horse. “It is satisfying to look after them and to see them grow,” he adds. “And, when the weather it nice, just to be out there in the peace and quiet is fantastic.” Photography by Nick Read

Today Richard cultivates oysters. He lays them out when they are little more than the size of a finger nail and heads out to the creek every day to care for them. He thins them out and moves them on as they grow, and after about two years they are ready to be harvested. “Oysters are very good survivors, especially in this location,” he says. “I always think looking after them is a bit like gardening!”

s a young boy, Cliff Nye spent many of his holidays fishing in the creeks of North Norfolk.

Years later, as an adult, he still delights in the fresh produce of Brancaster Staithe – so much so, in fact, that he launched his own fine dining establishment right on the very edge of the saltmarshes. “I bought The White Horse because I loved this area and have always found Brancaster to be a place of great charm and full of life,” he says. “I wanted people to be able to share in everything I have found here – and that includes the food. I have been eating the mussels and oysters here since I was a child and I still enjoy them today as much as I ever did.” Cliff, who completely renovated The White Horse, and extended it, adding

eight, architect-designed en suite rooms, prides himself on a menu that features the best local produce. This includes the likes of mussels, crab, lobster, oysters, shrimp, sea bass, mackerel and sea trout, depending on the season. “Whitebait is one of my favourites, when it comes in fresh, and sea trout can also be delicious. I love oysters too – they are particularly delicious at this time of year.” Head chef at the restaurant, Avrum Frankel, agrees, and adds: “I think the mussels from Brancaster are also something to savour. There is nothing like seeing the very food you are preparing coming up from the beach. “We are lucky here – we have some of the very best mussels in the country right on our doorstep.” Mussels by the pot are one of the most requested dishes at this time of year at

“This is a real comfort food and is even something you can make yourself. You can have it in a bowl with a piece of bread or dress it up a little and serve it at a dinner party.” Cliff believes the fishermen of Brancaster have a true understanding of seafood and shellfish. “There are families who have been fishing here for more than three generations,” he points out. “We do not measure the ingredients they give us in food miles – we measure them in food metres.” For more information on The White Horse call 01485 210262 or visit www.whitehorsebrancaster.co.uk

AVRUM FRANKEL’S SMOKED HADDOCK AND MUSSEL CHOWDER SERVES FOUR INGREDIENTS 250g Letzer’s smoked haddock 20 Cyril’s mussels Two carrots – diced Two courgettes – diced Two shallots – diced Two sticks of celery – diced Two large potatoes – cubed 100ml white wine Two pints double cream One handful chopped parsley

METHOD Steam the mussels in your white wine in a pan. Once they have opened, take the pan off heat and drain, keeping the liquid. Take another pan and add your haddock to the cream, then poach. When the fish is flaky, take it off the heat and set to one side. Fry all the vegetables and your potatoes in a new pan, with a little oil. Add the cooked mussel liquid and bring to the boil. Pour in the cream and bring to the boil again. Then add your mussels and haddock, and finish with chopped parsley Season but do not forget to taste first – as this dish is naturally salty!

Spring greens Sarah Sinclair A suggests some fabulous foods to tuck into this season

s the weather starts to warm up and we begin looking forward to the arrival of spring, local producers in Norfolk and Suffolk have a bounty of delights to offer us. Fresh from the fields are all sorts of tasty vegetables, including wonderful, leafy greens that are packed with nutrients. Cabbage, for example, often associated with the over-cooked school dinners of our childhoods, can be truly delicious in crunchy coleslaw, crispy bubble and squeak or simply lightly steamed and served with a drizzle of butter. Brussels sprouts are also still fresh and tasty at this time of year, and are packed with vitamins A and C. Try them roasted with a little garlic and olive oil or even cold in a late winter / early spring salad. Kale is another green delight that can be cooked up and served in all sorts of ways – try it stir-fried with your favourite Chinese spices or gently steamed and served with fresh fish.

FRESH FROM THE FIELDS JANUARY Cabbage, Jerusalem artichoke, kale, parsnip, swede, beetroot, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, celery, horseradish, leek, potatoes FEBRUARY Cauliflower, celeriac, leek, purple sprouting broccoli, salsify, shallots, turnips, chicory, carrots, endive MARCH Spinach, onions, spring onions, garlic, lettuce, mushrooms, rocket, red cabbage, cress, rhubarb

“Born in Great Yarmouth and currently still living in the town, I am a Norfolk boy. “I first became interested in taking pictures in my teens; this soon gave way to guitars and rock music but I rekindled my love for photography just before the turn of the millennium.

“I am completely self-taught – I believe it’s the best way to learn a skill. For anyone starting out in photography, I would suggest getting out and about as often as possible. It is important to learn from both successes and failures, and to understand why an image worked or didn’t work. “Simply being out and about in the landscape and visiting beautiful places keeps me interested in photography.

UNIQUELY AWAY SPRING 2013

“Both Norfolk and Suffolk are very varied and offer a lifetime’s worth of photography. I openly admit my work is primarily coastal and there’s certainly enough to keep me occupied on the Norfolk and Suffolk coast alone. “From the expanses of North Norfolk beaches to the picturesque seaside towns of Southwold and Aldeburgh, and from the heathlands to the Broads, each county has something very different to offer.

“A colleague, Gareth Hacon, and I opened the Saltmarsh Coast Gallery in Wells-next-the-Sea, in October 2008. My only real aim for next year is to update my pictures of Norfolk and Suffolk. “Although I use a digital format, I believe I work in a very traditional way. The biggest compliment I can be paid is when someone says my pictures look very natural.

17

“In terms of style, I would say I am very illustrative, I merely want people to say: ‘Look at that – isn’t it beautiful?’ For more information on Jon’s work visit www.jon-gibbs.co.uk, www.facebook.com/JonGibbsPhotography or www.saltmarshcoastgallery.co.uk

the country, which gives me a very varied clientele.”

Julie’s current shop is on the High Street, in Aldeburgh. Until recently she also ran a business in Woodbridge but decided to focus on just one outlet.

Julie’s working career initially saw her employed as a documentary photographer, for magazines and newspapers. After having her children, however, she started craft making; working with pottery and then glass. She has also run a clothes shop in Bristol.

“Aldeburgh is a great location for a business like this. It is a lovely little town, with an amazing range of different people, from those living here to those with holiday homes and other visitors. People come from all over

“I just have this interest in homeware and crafts,” she explains. “And that has all evolved into what I do today.”

When she moved back, however, they decided to stay. “We love it here – the peace, quiet and whole atmosphere.” The first shop came up quite by chance and then came the Aldeburgh venture. The types of products stocked have changed over time but, says Julie, that is the nature of her business.

“It started off with much more of a focus on art, with sculpture and pictures, but now there is more emphasis on contemporary crafts and vintage homeware. I stock organic, coloured china, as well as white pieces. I have fabric, glass, pottery and jewellery.” While she makes glass beads herself, the vast majority of Julie’s stock is sourced from carefully selected artists across the UK and beyond. One supplier even lives in Venice, where Julie travels to collect her delicate, glass goblets.

“Some artists make their items especially for me,” she says. “What is important is that no-one else in this area has anything similar. “I have a small, friendly shop that is known for its unique pieces – its big selling point is that it is bright and colourful – and that it has a fantastic variety of items displayed for people to come to have a look at.” For more information please call 01728 452497 or visit www.juliephipps.com

designed by famous millwright John Whitmore, and visitors can climb the tall tower to see his intricate machinery.

Situated by the River Deben, it has a long and fascinating history, while also offering beautiful scenery, interesting shops and superb places to stay.

But despite its attractive historic buildings and character-filled lanes, Woodbridge is also firmly rooted in the present.

The iconic Tide Mill is today a living museum. Restored to full working order, the English oak waterwheel once again turns the machinery to mill grain for flour, whenever the tides permit.

Its pretty streets house a spectrum of delightful and very individual shops and galleries, as well as an array of welcoming cafes and restaurants, serving delicious Suffolk produce.

The Woodbridge Museum is also an interesting attraction; here visitors can find out more about the evolution of the town, from Roman times right up to the present day.

There is plenty here to keep the keen shopper busy all day, while those who prefer peace and tranquillity can choose to stroll along beside the river, watch the water birds and gaze across to famous Sutton Hoo instead.

The 10 Church Street shop is part of Lisa’s 16th century home, which she shares with her three children. Her partner Steve Andrews also runs his dog training and behaviour business from the location. Lisa’s highly successful diary business, Organise-Us, also has shelf space, enticing customers from along one wall of the shop. “It works very well doing everything from here,” she says. “And living here as well makes it very easy with family life.” She goes on: “I do sometimes have pieces I sell in the house and am often happy to take customers through to show them what they look like within a room.” And she adds: “I used to travel a lot and have always collected things. I also love interior design and have a real interest in antiques – a lot of the things I buy have a history behind them.” “Now I am able to bring everything I enjoy together in one place.” Photography by Nick Read

With its rows and rows of handsome violins, Russell Stowe’s shop in the centre of Woodbridge is music to the heart

The sound of strings century shop a welcoming place to spend time. Russell has been here since 1991, having qualified at the internationally renowned Newark School of Violin Making and worked alongside a wellknown violin restorer in Leicestershire. “I am not a musician myself but I think you do have to have an understanding of music to do this,” he admits. “I did play a little when I was younger but I kind of fell into it because I heard about the violin making school.

usicians travel from across the country to visit Woodbridge Violins on Market Hill in the Suffolk town. Yet passersby find themselves drawn to it too.

Behind an alluring, multi-paned window, violin restorer Russell Stowe, and his colleague Jonathan Evans lovingly bring exquisite violins back to life. “The shop is a very visual place and people do come inside and say: ‘Wow,’” says Russell, whose rows of beautiful instruments line the walls of the interior space. “We sell violins, violas and cellos to all sorts of musicians, from beginners to very experienced players, and we restore instruments of all ages, some of which date back to the 18th century.”

“When I launched out on my own I started from my parents’ house and then I got the shop and it just snowballed.” The beamed building, with its wooden floor, is the perfect place for a business like this, he says, and Woodbridge itself is an ideal location. Musicians often arrive here for the day, or even a weekend, and enjoy the sights and sounds of the market town while they wait. “I still get as much enjoyment from doing this as I ever have,” says Russell. “We do have lots of adults who come in to see us but what I most enjoy is dealing with the youngsters. “There is something about an eight year-old choosing a violin for the first time that still captures all the romance of the instrument.” For more information on Woodbridge Violins call 01394 383150

Lizzie and John Hammond started Suffolk Cottage Holidays almost by accident. Now it is a thriving operation based in Woodbridge

A home from home ishermen’s cottages overlooking the sea or pretty, pink houses in the depths of Constable Country – Suffolk Cottage Holidays has a wealth of interesting and comfortable homes from home.

F

The business was launched by husband and wife team Lizzie and John Hammond some 12 years ago and today it boasts an array of luxury holiday properties in the area. “John bought a property very close to Woodbridge, with the aim of doing it up. It was a holiday let and he decided to honour the bookings it already had,” Lizzie explains. “It developed from there. He thought he might as well fill the gaps with some more bookings – and it just seemed to just carry on.” She continues: “Then some friends asked him to look after their holiday homes and within six months he was overseeing seven properties. Today Suffolk Cottage Holidays has 210 properties and we also run Big House Holidays, which looks after places that can sleep large groups.” Operating from offices in Woodbridge and a shop in Aldeburgh, the team hand-select all their holiday homes,

ensuring they are of a high standard and have something unique to offer those visiting Suffolk. “We do have a number of cottages in Woodbridge as we find this is an area people come back to year after year,” she says. “Woodbridge has everything, from some absolutely fantastic historic buildings to the beautiful River Deben. It is just a gem of a place.” For more information call 01394 389189 or visit www.suffolkcottageholidays.com www.bighouseholidays.co.uk www.visit-woodbridge.co.uk

narrow-gauge Bure Valley Railway. Starting from the pretty market town of Aylsham, where Marriott’s Way ends, walkers can stroll off through the countryside to the attractive village of Brampton, with its character cottages and round-towered church.

A short distance along the path, they then come to Buxton with Lamas. Nestling beside the River Bure, and with a restored mill, this is where Anna Sewell, author of Black Beauty, is buried. The route then heads on to Coltishall and Horstead, another two villages that

Tucked away in rolling countryside, within easy reach of the coast, the Partridges run stylish holiday cottages where young families are welcomed with open arms

And, as such, they are determined to ensure guests at Barnhouse Holiday Cottages arrive to find a home from home. Their three holiday properties not only offer high levels of comfort and style but have also been designed to be welcoming to families with babies and toddlers. Bright, airy and offering open plan living, they are all equipped with everything a family could need and are designed to make the time away from

home as relaxing as possible. “Although the cottages are ideal for adults, it was important to us that they were somewhere people with children – particularly pre-school children – could come on holiday,” explains Cate, who is mother to Daisy, Tom, Libby and Johnny. “There is space for the children to play outside safely and we have ensured there are things like pushchairs, highchairs and baby baths, as well as lots of toys and DVDs the families can use. People do not always want to come away with all of that equipment; we want to make everything as easy as possible for them.” Located at East Beckham, close to

Sheringham, Cromer and Holt, as well as the spectacular beaches of Holkham and Wells-next-the-Sea, the family have three exquisite holiday homes – Overstrand Cottage, Salthouse Cottage and Bayfield Cottage. Salthouse and Bayfield each have one bedroom while Overstrand has two. “The arrangement is perfect for two families wishing to come together or perhaps a family with a little one and baby, and then grandparents too,” she points out. “We did all the interior design ourselves and really thought about how we would like to stay in them if we were guests. “We have gone for a clean, comfortable

beauty of the countryside. They also loved the very natural, open beaches, the lively market towns and the superb pubs and restaurants.

The family have been here for three years now; living in the beautiful brick and flint barn that gives their holiday operation its name, and enjoying their stunning surroundings.

“I think many people do not realise just how varied it is here,” she says.

“We had talked about moving out of London for years and years and then when we had children it focused us a bit more,” she recalls. “We had always wanted to live near the sea and when we came to North Norfolk on holiday we just fell in love with it.” The couple were enticed by the wild

After finding the barn, they made their big move, and then began to welcome guests into the new life they had discovered. “The beauty of staying here is that people can be very private if they want to but equally we are close by if they need us. We are sociable people and guests do often end up sharing a bottle of wine with us in the garden while the children all play together,” says Cate.

“We love having guests to stay here and have made some very good friends.” And she adds: “Living here has been incredible for us. The children can now run wild, build dens and have a childhood that is quite old-fashioned in many ways. “And we have also enjoyed the freedom. Marion Anthony, director of Heritage Hideaways, which looks after the cottage, says: “This was one of the original farmhouses in the village. Today it is still a charming, typical seaside cottage, with beams and fireplaces, and yet it also offers very generous space. “It has four bedrooms and three bathrooms, and lots of room for the guests to spend time together. Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden

The grounds of Walsingham Abbey in Norfolk are famous for their stunning displays of snowdrops in the spring, as well as the spectacular ruins of the Medieval priory.

This is a family-run, specialist plant centre and garden in the beautiful Stour Valley in Suffolk.

Set in the heart of the Norfolk Broads, Fairhaven is a unique garden, which is well worth a visit at this time of year.

The garden and arboretum cover 20 acres with many unusual trees and shrubs, spring bulbs, topiary and a series of ponds.

It offers an eclectic mix of native and cultivated plantings, with a network of dyke systems and a private broad.

This place of pilgrimage features almost 20 acres of woodland, which is carpeted with a huge variety of the spring flowers. The season begins on Saturday 2 February and runs throughout the month. The grounds are open from 10am to 4pm.

Here you can take part in a guided walk through the grounds to see the snowdrops and other winter flowering plants.

The New Winter Garden in the Dell has a selection of winter flowering plants, such as snowdrops and hellebores, as well as other trees and shrubs chosen for their colour during the winter months.

The ďŹ rst snowdrops of spring Sheringham Park Famous for its vast collection of rhododendrons and azaleas, this beautiful park is also a prime spot for enjoying snowdrops. The gardens here are the work of famous landscape designer Humphry Repton and are now owned by The National Trust. Among the snowdrops found in the park is the Upcher Snowdrop, named after the family that owned and ran the Norfolk estate for more than 170 years.

Ickworth There are 1,800 acres to explore at Ickworth, near Bury St Edmunds. The Italianate palace is renowned for its interior treasures but the grounds hold a wealth of delights too – including snowdrops in spring. The last major development of the park was the creation of the woodland. This was undertaken by the 1st Marquess, whose plan was to enclose the park within a border of woodland. The parkland and woods are open all year round from 8am to 8pm.

The park is open from dawn until dusk. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ickworth www.nationaltrust.org.uk/sheringham-park

pproaching magnificent Bruisyard Hall to celebrate their special day, wedding couples must find it hard to believe this glorious country estate is theirs, and theirs alone, for the next few days. The splendid Suffolk property, which dates back to at least 1354, has been home to the Rous family for more than 400 years but is today available for complete hire for weddings and other important events. Paul Rous, current manager of the hall, has overseen the recent renovation of the main house, as well as the conversion of a grand 17th century barn, which is now an impressive celebration area, where couples can choose to hold their ceremony or host a reception for up to 160 guests. “The idea is that people can take the whole place over for the period of their booking if they choose,” he explains. “It is like having your own country estate. You can have your ceremony

here, your party and your guests to stay. You can have the freedom of the whole grounds and really feel they are yours.” The main house, which sits in 700 acres of beautiful parkland grounds, close to Saxmundham, is entered via a great wooden door that gives on to an impressive, flagstoned reception hall, where champagne or cocktails can be served. Further on through the historic property, guests discover the drawing room, dining room, games room and enormous kitchen, all of which are free to be used as the happy couple choose, explains marketing executive Emma Close-Brooks. “There is a real flexibility here for people to have the wedding they want,” she says. “People can be married in the church in the village or smaller ceremonies for up to 30 can be held in the house itself – the reception hall with its high ceiling is an ideal space for this.” Up to 20 people can sleep in the house,

indulging in one of 10 sumptuous bedroom suites, all named after important or interesting people once connected to the estate. “We have opted for an interior design that is homely but also luxurious,” explains Emma. “It does offer a taste of grandeur but at the same time it is warm and bright.” Bruisyard Hall itself, which once served as an abbey, offers guests luxury, style and comfort. At the same time, its great stone fireplaces, heavy wooden window frames and even a priest’s hole, allow them to experience its unique character and sense of history for themselves. In contrast to the hall, the barn, where there are two further guest suites, offers enormous, open spaces, where vaulted ceilings and an exposed timber frame create a simply breath-taking function area. Here there is a banqueting hall, minstrels’ gallery and Medieval hall – and when receptions are held, the areas

are adorned with white table linen and stylish settings, transforming the whole place into an elegant wedding space. “People discuss with us exactly what they want and we help them to achieve it,” she says. “We have a full-time events manager and approved suppliers that we recommend.” The hall and barn can be hired for events other than weddings. Private parties often make bookings, as do conferences. But seeing the whole place come to life with the colour, laughter and excitement of a wedding is something all those at Bruisyard Hall admit is truly special. “We are really becoming known for our weddings now,” says Emma. “And what we aim for more than anything else is to ensure those getting married here have a simply wonderful time and that everything is just perfect for them on the day itself.” For more information call 01728 639000 or visit www.bruisyardhall.co.uk

As smooth as silk EVERY BRIDE AND GROOM WANTS TO ENSURE EVERYTHING IS JUST PERFECT ON THEIR BIG DAY. THAT IS WHERE SOFTLEY EVENTS STEPS IN…

F

rom lavish celebrations in sumptuous stately homes to intimate occasions in beautiful private houses, Sarah Softley has overseen all manner of stylish weddings in Norfolk and Suffolk. With her own list of carefully selected venues, as well as the capability to oversee events at home and in other locations, she is highly experienced at planning celebrations from the happy couple’s initial ideas right through to the moment they drive away at the end of their big day. “We have been responsible for co-ordinating all sorts of weddings and helping to ensure the day itself is memorable and goes completely smoothly for so many different people,” says Sarah, who has run Softley Events for seven years now. “There have been lots of wonderful weddings that stand out – either for the laughter and the fact everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves so much or because it was particularly moving in some other way.” Sarah, whose company is based in Mattishall, but covers the whole of East Anglia, started in the business by organising charity events for friends and family. It grew from there into an exclusive operation, managing sophisticated events for anywhere between 10 and 1,000 people. “Weddings probably account for about 70 per cent of our business, with at least

one celebration happening every weekend – and sometimes two or three.”

exclusive and are usually held in marquees overlooking the scenic lake.

Softley Events is highly experienced at bringing together all sorts of weddings – for those living in Norfolk or Suffolk, as well as others with no connection to the counties but choosing to be married in the area because of everything it has to offer.

”One of Softley Event’s newest venues is Manor Mews. This spacious setting is in the heart of the Norfolk countryside, within easy reach of the glorious North Norfolk coast.

“We do have lots of clients from London who decide to hold their weddings here and choose to use a very experienced wedding planner, such as ourselves, from the area.” Indeed, Sarah’s expertise and reputation has lead to her developing exclusive relationships with a number of very select establishments. Kimberley Hall, for example, sits in beautiful countryside just a few miles from Norwich. Its attractive grounds were first laid out by Lancelot “Capability” Brown and feature a picturesque lake and walled garden. “This is a 300 year-old private home, which has a stunning music room that is very ornate and ideal for ceremonies,” she says. “Then we also have Sennowe Park, which was the private, ancestral home of Thomas Albert Cook. This is a magnificent Edwardian house that is set in the most spectacular grounds.

“This venue offers something completely different and has a wonderful, rural feel. There is a beautiful, red brick barn, which is ideal for weddings and there is lots of space for a marquee. “One of the great things about Manor Mews, however, is that it also has accommodation for up to 82 people, allowing the entire wedding party to stay there.” Sarah is a specialist in taking the happy couple’s vision and transforming it into a fabulous reality. “It is their day and it is my job to ask them for a wish list and then to make it work for them,” she adds. “We can do as little or as much of their wedding planning as they would like us to do – and then work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure everything falls into place. “This is the most important day of their lives and our job is to help them make it truly special.” For more information call 01362 857191

trolling across the beautiful Grade I listed gardens, towards the great stone steps that sweep down from the terrace, it is easy to see why ornate Arts & Crafts house Voewood has become so desirable as a wedding venue. Outside, its sunken garden, glorious beds and pretty ornamental pond provide the perfect setting for a truly special day while its decorative terraces, loggias and cloisters offer simply stunning backdrops for photography. But the beauty of Voewood, explains owner Simon Finch, is that the wedding party can take over the entire house as well, if they wish. Up to 32 guests can be accommodated in a total of 14 bedrooms, each with its own distinctive

look and unique interior design. “I think people are attracted to Voewood because there is nowhere else like it,” says Simon, a rare book dealer. “It is a fantastic piece of architecture and the interiors are unusual. It is a house that makes people smile while also being very homely.” Built between 1903 and 1905, by the architect ES Prior, the substantial property, which is close to Holt, in North Norfolk, is a magnificent example of a butterfly house. Like other Arts & Crafts properties, it has a very solid yet elaborate structure, and much of the material used in its creation was taken from its grounds,

resulting in the space that would eventually become the sunken garden. “The house was built to be a private home but was never lived in. It later became a boys’ school and when I bought it, it was a care home,” he says. It was 14 years ago that Simon first fell in love with Voewood and decided to take it on and restore it to its former glory. Since then, he has worked his way through it, repairing and restoring it as necessary, and filling it with fascinating pieces of furniture and eclectic works of art. As he progressed, he realised others found Voewood as enticing as he did, and that its size, layout and overwhelming

make more of the garden and perhaps to have a marquee outside.”

“We had a couple of weddings here and then more people became interested through word of mouth. I realised I quite liked doing it – it was nice to be part of people’s big day.”

If necessary, Simon, and his partner Dolores, can help those getting married at the house with their arrangements. They can recommend excellent local suppliers and will ensure the party has as much support as required.

Today, Voewood is licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 100 guests in the impressive main hall. The dining room and the music room are also licensed and are suitable for more intimate occasions. The hall can also be used for wedding receptions, as can any of the spaces within the house. “We like to encourage people to use Voewood as they wish. Some choose to

“We are not wedding planners but Dolores is very, very good at looking after people and we are always there to help,” he says.

“It is hard work but this is a great place for parties,” Simon admits. “I also love it when people respond well to the house, seeing them come in and knocked out by the architecture as I was. “People appreciate the fact Voewood is unique and that there is something wonderful about it – and for me that justifies having done all of this.” Words by Abigail Saltmarsh For more information call 01263 713029 or visit www.voewood.com

ucked away in a rural setting close to Walberswick is a building that at first sight is both inconspicuous and unassuming. As visitors approach, however, The Balancing Barn reveals itself to the full - a long, sleek, metallic building emerges, reflecting both the greenery of its surroundings and the blues of the Suffolk skies above. Dramatic as this 30m building is, however, the full impact of its design

can only be appreciated upon strolling round to the side. For the holiday property seems to hang in mid air – one end of the elongated structure juts out over the edge of the hill, creating the illusion of precarious balance, and the possibility of perhaps sliding off into its surroundings, with just one nudge or tilt. This playful design is the work of Dutch architects MVRDV, on behalf of Living Architecture, a social enterprise dedicated to the promotion and

enjoyment of modern architecture. Richard Day, operations director for the organisation, explains the eye-catching property was designed to be used as a holiday home. “Living Architecture was really the brainchild of Alain de Botton who hit upon the idea of creating very modern houses that people could actually spend some time in,” he says. “He felt that in this country so many wonderful examples of modern

UNIQUELY AWAY SPRING 2013

architecture were either public buildings or the preserve of the very rich. He liked the idea of the way The Landmark Trust worked with older buildings and wanted to do something similar with modern ones.” Today, Living Architecture has five properties in place. Each was designed from scratch, with its setting very much in mind. The Suffolk site was on two levels, which gave rise to the cantilevered design, Richard explains. “The story goes that the architect, Winy

Maas, was at a restaurant and saw his knife hanging over the edge of the table. This gave him the idea for the barn,” he says. “We bought the land from The Suffolk Wildlife Trust and the design made the most of wonderful views, allowing for the creation of a glass floor in the overhanging section.” Clad in stainless tiles to reflect the light and the colours of the countryside, the balancing barn sleeps eight people. Inside, it reveals minimal, modern interiors, designed by Studio Makkink & Bey.

63

“On the walls and floor coverings, paintings by local artists Constable and Gainsborough have been sampled and manipulated to create artwork that is really quite intriguing. “The rooms are very modern yet comfortable, and designed to appeal to all sorts of people who might wish to come and stay in this beautiful part of Suffolk.” For more information on The Balancing Barn and Living Architecture visit www.living-architecture.co.uk

to be such a very, very pretty county and over the years since then I think more people have become aware of its beauty. I still love visiting places, like Tattingstone, with all its little pubs, or going to Aldeburgh and having fish and chips on the beach. And now you have some of your swimming schools here? Yes I have three in Ipswich and one in Norwich. What is the philosophy of Karen Pickering Swim? We have very small groups so the learners have a really high quality lesson. I think it’s important my teachers teach swimming as a life skill. But it needs to be fun too. I want people to love swimming so they keep coming back to it. It would be great if someone went on to become an international swimmer from one of my classes but for me that is not everything. Do you promote swimming as a good way to get fit? Yes. Our Tech and Fit courses are a great way to tone up and lose weight, with a teacher there to motivate you. Swimming is also great for the lungs. I was diagnosed with asthma at a young age and a doctor suggested I took up swimming to strengthen my lungs.

What is your connection to this part of the world? I was born in Brighton but moved to Ipswich when I was 17. I trained at Crown Pools, which was great. It was a bit of a culture shock for me at the time but Ipswich was a very homely town and the community really took me under its wing. The people here adopted me as a local girl and supported me throughout my whole career. What did you enjoy about living in Suffolk? Back then, Suffolk was a place very few people from Brighton came to unless there was a reason. But I found it

SWIM

Do you think swimming has a better profile in the UK since the Olympics? Yes – and we have some great role models now. I was involved in the coverage of the Olympics for BBC Radio 5 Live and the Paralympics for Channel 4. It was great to see us win three medals in the pool and one for diving at the Olympics – and anyone who watched Ellie Simmonds swim to victory in the Paralympics could not fail to be inspired. Would you like to see a champion come from this part of the world in the future? That would be lovely wouldn’t it? But Norfolk and Suffolk are great places to swim for fun too. We have such wonderful beaches here. It is nice to be able to enjoy them to the full and join in the fun safely and with confidence. Karen Pickering is a Speedo ambassador as well as the proud founder of Karen Pickering Swim. Anne Hagen, general manager of the establishment today, says the building, which still has its original flagstones in the hallway, has offered hospitality to a number of prominent names over the centuries. “In 1737, for example, King George II stayed here,” she points out. “He was on his way from London to Ipswich.”

Today, the interior of the hotel still reflects the character of its past while also emphasising its modern appeal. “We have opted for an English country chic look – our dining room is decorated in white, and the bar and library are also stylish,” she says. “At the same time, we like to have roaring fires in the public areas and ensure there is a very welcoming atmosphere here.” Renowned for its cuisine, The Bell House Hotel, which has two Michelin forks, can seat up to 55 and serves full menus at breakfast, lunch and dinner in its elegant dining room. Guests can order more casual meals in the library. “Our chef, Bernhard Hagen, is Austrian and has cooked for a lot of celebrities, as well as the royal family in Dubai,” she says. “His cuisine has a classical, panEuropean influence.”

World-renowned, all-male Shakespeare company Propeller returns to the Theatre Royal, in Norwich, to officially launch its 2013 tour. Under the leadership of acclaimed director Ed Hall, it will present Twelfth Night and The Taming of the Shrew. Running from Thursday 24 January to Friday 1 February is the company’s premiere of its 2013 production of The Taming of the Shrew. This sees two men in disguise compete for the

hand of the beautiful Bianca while the gold-digging Petruchio decides to marry Bianca’s unpleasant sister Kate without even seeing her. Then from Tuesday 29 January to Saturday 2 February, Twelfth Night will be staged. This is a tale of love, heartbreak and mistaken identity. The setting of Illyria is transformed from an island in Shakespeare’s text into a huge country house in this production, and sees a man playing a girl disguised as a boy in the classic tale of deception, confusion and romance.

La Fille Mal Gardee Coppelia and Swan Lake Ipswich Regent The Russian State Ballet and Orchestra of Siberia perform for three nights in Ipswich. La Fille Mal Gardee is one of the oldest ballets still regularly performed. A gentle tale of love thwarted, unrequited and found, it is a masterpiece of comedy. Coppelia is a witty combination of antics and abracadabra set in a doll maker’s workshop. A light-

hearted tale of mistaken identity and confused lovers, it tells of mischievous Swanilda, her impetuous suitor Franz and eccentric toymaker Dr Coppelius. Finally, Swan Lake, the greatest romantic ballet of all time, will be brought to life on the Ipswich stage by Tchaikovsky’s haunting and unforgettable score.

New group ZRI perform the work of Brahms at The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds, at 8pm, on Sunday 24 February. ZRI stands for Zum Roten Igel, the name of a Viennese tavern where Brahms loved listening to gypsy bands. Brahms wrote his Clarinet Quintet, in 1891, in Austria, and ZRI will perform the much-loved work in the form of a tavern ensemble of its time. The group has re-scored it, replacing one of the violins and the viola with a santouri and accordion for the rich folk band sounds that inspired the original piece itself. The musicians will perform all four movements of the work and weave in Hungarian dances, gypsy tunes and

Jewish klezmer melodies. ZRI features musicians Max Baillie, Matthew Sharp, Ben Harlan, Jon Banks and Iris Pissaride. The concert will be presented in the round, in a relaxed and informal style.

UNIQUELY AWAY SPRING 2013

In the know Nick Read

re you local yourself? No, I only moved to Norfolk in 1992 but my wife was born and bred in Norwich.

A

What do you enjoy about living in Norfolk? The friendliness of people along with the great variety of things to do in the county, from heritage railways of various gauges, such as the Bure Valley Railway, to the Broads and the “fine city” of Norwich. In your opinion what makes the county so appealing to visitors? The wide variety of “scapes,” such as the Brecklands, the coast and the great expanses of sky. We can also choose whether to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside or the bustle of our many and varied market towns.

Brian Lowe, train guard, Bure Valley Railway

Tell us about your work at the Bure Valley Railway? I became a volunteer guard there in 1995. I enjoy it very much as it brings me into contact with members of the public, many of whom are holiday-makers out for a good time. I am also treasurer and social secretary of the Friends of the Bure Valley Railway, which is the volunteer support association of the railway. What makes the railway enjoyable for visitors to the county and those living here? The majority of the trains are hauled by stream locomotives and so the whole experience is extremely nostalgic. Apart from that, and the gentle Norfolk scenery through which the train passes, the railway is also an all-weather attraction, with all the coaches fully covered and several that are wheelchair accessible. There is a restaurant at Aylsham, together with a gift and model railway shop, while the engine shed is normally open to visitors to permit them to see the locomotives that are not in steam that day.

What would you suggest people do if they had just one day to spend in Norfolk? Depending on their interests, they could visit Norwich, with its cathedral, castle and museums, as well as its shopping opportunities, trips on the River Wensum and The Lanes. Alternatively, they could take a boat train on the Bure Valley Railway, allowing for a short visit to Aylsham, which is a quintessential Norfolk market town, followed by a ride on the train and then a trip on the Norfolk Broads. They could then enjoy a shopping spree in Wroxham before returning to Aylsham by rail. Where are your own personal favourite places to visit in Norfolk? The North Norfolk coast, with its small towns and ports, such as Cromer, Sheringham, Wells-next-the-Sea and Blakeney, and its wildlife and great walking areas. Tell us about what you believe to be some of Norfolk’s hidden gems? These would include Castle Acre Priory, Blakeney Point and a boat trip to see the seals. Wymondham, with its Norman abbey, market cross and Heritage Museum, is also a hidden gem. Do you have any final suggestions for visitors? Come to enjoy the peace of a Broads holiday and the open skies of the county or spend some time in the city of Norwich – and while you are here do visit the Bure Valley Railway to see some of Norfolk’s lovely countryside as you are hauled along by a locomotive, bringing back happy memories of the days of steam… For more information on the Bure Valley Railway call 01263 733858 or visit www.bvrw.co.uk
