Altares inolvidables Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo Construida en 1665 con ofrendas de los vecinos de la Plaza de los Jagueyes (hoy plaza Fernández Madrid) es la más cotizada del Centro de Histórico. Su gran atractivo es su hermoso altar barroco en laminilla de oro. Es una iglesia confortable con aire acondicionado y excelente acústica. Iglesia y Convento San Pedro Claver Construida en 1580. Allí se guardan los restos del protector de los esclavos Pedro Claver. La iglesia ha recibido diferentes nombres a través de la historia. Entre ellos: Convento de San Juan de Dios, San Ignacio de Loyola, y actualmente, San Pedro Claver. Reconstruida en el siglo XVII. Es la iglesia de mayor importancia arquitectónica de Cartagena. Posee una majestuosa fachada barroca y su cúpula rimbombante. Cuenta con tres naves, un altar mayor en mármol de carrara y un altar de oficio. Iglesia y Convento Santo Domingo El más antiguo de la ciudad, terminado
en el siglo XVI. La construcción de los dos centros religiosos se inició en 1579 y se prolongó hasta 1698. Después de su restauración pasó a ser una de las predilectas del jet set. El altar barroco luce una imagen tallada en madera del siglo XIX del Cristo de la Expiración. Ermita de El Cabrero Capilla en donde se conservan los restos del poeta y presidente Rafael Núñez, autor de la letra del Himno Nacional colombiano. Bajo su gobierno se elaboró la Constitución de 1886, vigente hasta el año 1991. Posee un espacio confortable Con aire acondicionado. Ideal para bodas familiares. Su tamaño y su belleza no requieren de mucho adorno. Catedral Catalina de Alejandría En 1537 se levantó la primera catedral de Cartagena, en un modesto edificio de palma, consumido por un incendio en 1552. El siniestro obligó a realizar una nueva construcción en materiales más duraderos como la piedra y la madera, entre los años 1577 y 1612.

Its great attraction is its beautiful Baroque altar in gold foil. It is a comfortable, air conditioned church and excellent acoustic. Church and Convent of Saint Pedro Claver Built in 1580. In this place are stored the remains of the protector of slaves, Pedro Claver. The church has received different names throughout history. Among them: Convent of San Juan de Dios, San Ignacio de Loyola, and now, San Pedro Claver. Rebuilt in the seventeenth century. It is the most important church of Cartagena. Cartagena, a port of holidays and traditions La manifestación del fervor mágico y simbólico en Cartagena se ve reflejada en la religiosidad popular y con ella una serie de festividades de las cuales, una de las más esperadas es la fiesta de la Virgen de La Candelaria, nombre que le viene de las candelas que bendicen en su honor el 2 de febrero. Ésta fiesta patronal se ha caracterizado por reunir los aspectos profanos de la devoción religiosa, por ello se acostumbra a llevar flores y velas a la Virgen que se encuentra en el templo ubicado en el Cerro de La Popa -elevación geográfica más alta de la ciudad-, se reza, se hacen peregrinaciones, procesiones y también se canta. Ésta fiesta es la oportunidad de una hibridación de diferentes expresiones culturales con la tradición cultural de una Cartagena devota. Ya sea a pie u otro medio de transporte, es la ocasión para que cartageneros y visitantes suban a La Popa, ya sea a conocer o a participar en los actos religiosos. El “peregrinaje” inicia en las faldas de La Popa. Estas fiestas que tradicionalmente se concentran en el Convento de La Popa, normalmente se realizan desde las 4 de la mañana y hasta las 10 de la noche, el recorrido hacia el Convento va por un camino enmarcado por ventas populares, y la gastronomía típica de la región. Lo ideal es contratar un guía turístico para escuchar la historia que esconde éste escenario que sirvió de cuartel y fortín. De seguro, nos deslumbrará la leyenda escabrosa del sitio denominado “El salto del cabrón” y que allí arriba, a principios del siglo XVII, en la cima fue construido un claustro denominado “Convento de Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria”.
The manifestation of magical and symbolic fervor in Cartagena is reflected in popular religion and with it a series of festivities which, one of the most awaited is the feast of the Virgin of La Candelaria, a name that comes from the candles that are blessed in her honor on February 2. This feast day is characterized by gathering the profane aspects of religious devotion, that is why it is customary to bring flowers and candles to the Virgin in the temple that is located in La Popa Hill, the highest geographical elevation of the city. People pray, make pilgrimages, and also sing. This festival is the opportunity for hybridization of different cultural expressions of a cultural tradition of a religious Cartagena. Whether on foot or other means of transport, it is the occasion for local people and visitors to go to the top of La Popa, either to know or participate in the religious activities. The journey begins at the bottom of La Popa. These festivities, traditionally concentrated in the Convent of La Popa, are usually performed from 4 in the morning until 10 at night, the journey to the convent is on a walk bordered by popular sales, and the cuisine of the region. It is highly recommended to hire a tour guide to hear the story of this scenario that served as barracks and fort. No doubt, visitors are dazzled by the legend of the site called “el salto del cabron”. The convent of our “Señora de La Candelaria” was built there on the onset of the seventeenth century.
