AR 518 & AR 718 – Integrated Architecture Design Project (Year 3- UNIT C) July – November 2022
The rising amount of flash floods and urban sprawl in the twenty-first century remind us that we live in a perilous planet. Environmental degradation, climate change, and extreme weather events, as well as natural disasters, pandemics, and civil wars or other violent conflicts, have destabilised fragile ecosystems, exacerbated social inequalities, fueled migration, and pushed the most vulnerable among us into a downward spiral of precarity. The worldwide COVID-19 epidemic is merely the most recent example of this. Designers are gathering ideas for post-Covid urban design and planning. The crisis is assisting in the development of cities that are more robust to pandemics.
INTRODUCTION
1. Development components (AR 518 & AR 718)
• Main programmes- Through the process of extracting and abstracting done in previous projects (P1 and P2), students have narrowed down their scope of study, site responses and literature review to a more personalised narrative form. Prior to the three (3) project themes: URBAN TRAFFIC, FLASH FLOOD & CITY
MAKING, the formulation of ideas and project approaches will result in variations of building typologies. • This will be shown via programmatic and physical interventions into the existing urban and rural fabric. This will also formulate the potential spaces required to accommodate the intended design brief: o Ancillary Spaces- Surau, Cafeteria, Gymnasium etc. o Building Service Spaces- Loading and Unloading Bay, M&E Related Rooms, Toilets, Storage etc. o Outdoor leisure / Recreational Spaces- A minimum requirement of 10% green space is required by law. Considering the scale of project built up vs site allocation, the park(s) may play an important role in understanding the fabric of open spaces and potential linkage between the existing social network and public interfacing of your proposal to promote societal inclusivity. • The Living Complex Components (Approximately 30% of the Built-Up Area)-
SEMESTER 6 ONLY- Depending on the suggested programmes, the living component may consist of several typologies (hostels, studio units, twin sharing, common housing etc). Examples of accommodation with shared common facilities
