PROJECT 1: 15%- Framing Ideas Towards Architectural Spatial Concepts INTRODUCTION

Tanjong Malim grew from its humble beginnings of a border town between the states of Perak and Selangor to become the knowledge hub of the country, at least in the early 19th century. Sultan Idris Teaching College (SITC) was officially opened on 29 November 1922 by Sir George Maxwell who was then the Chief Secretary of the Federated Malay States (FMS). The academic programme consisted of the standard schoolwork that students are expected to complete, such as mathematics, geography, language, history, and Malay literature. Agriculture and handicraft both provided opportunities for hands-on training and education. Tanjong Malim has gone through periods of major transition; The transformation of the Institut Pendidikan Sultan Idris (IPSI) into the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in 1997 as well as becoming a manufacturing and high-value services hub as a result of the construction of the Proton industrial complex in 2005, which was expanded at a cost of RM 1.2 billion. This town is chosen for its rich historical background, the different characteristics, the current situations and the future aspirations of these areas offered in terms of the urban studies.

Unit C promotes design and thinking approaches that may programme the town settings to create a more vibrant and engaging environment. These design implications for existing communities may provide sustainable solutions for a more liveable town development in the future. Through architectural interventions, the town of Tanjong Malim could be a solution for a larger framework of community in promoting:

1. A small-scale ‘Transit-Oriented Development’ or TOD;

2. A revival of the old townscape of Tanjong Malim;

3. A linkage to the industrial zone of Proton City;

4. An extension of the educational functions of UPSI

Unit C uses narrative inquiries through illustrations, models and imaginative writings

The discussion sets to provide a place of conversation on the series of anthropological issues (communities and cultures), urban morphological issues (history, connectivity and building typologies) and the pre-existing sub-urban landscapes. The notions of programmatic interventions, spatial integrations, heritage preservation are yet to be introduced in the first project of this semester. This will help to determine your individual’s project design intent, direction and project outcome

PROJECT 1 (P1)- Framing Your Ideas Through An Architectural Manifesto

P1A. Literature Review: towards conceptualising keywords into a design framework

With Tanjong Malim in mind, you must conduct an extensive research based on selected literature studies using a compilation of sketches & writeups to explain your framework based on your favoured themes: TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT (SMALL-SCALE) or RESTORATION OF THE OLD TOWNSCAPE or INDUSTRIAL CONNECTION or TRANSFER OF KNOWLEDGE

SUBMISSION

REQUIREMENTS

(PROJECT 1A- INDIVIDUAL)

Mixed-media artwork reacting to the literature readings (of an A3 square bookletto start your overall semester works compilation)

Lum Kar Man (2022/01-05) abstract model, research framework and narrative ideas

P1B. Sectional Drawing Representation of A Case Study: towards understanding the structural framing and spaces through narrative forms

This will be a short intensive workshop with the task of abstracting the structural framing and spaces of the selected architectural precedent pertaining to the chosen theme. The setting up of the A0 drawing is a sectional drawing of 1:50 scale inserting human

activities reflecting your narratives from your design framework. These narrations act as a vital methodology for driving architectural thinking through reading the literature (P1) and exploring ideas through spaces (P2). With the aim of imagining your own speculative design solutions, you will learn how to define the setting and building design, and to create a compelling architectural concept.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS (PROJECT 1B- INDIVIDUAL)

1. A0 framed drawing of partial section drawing of your case study (manual or digital), with the collective townscapes of ‘Tanjong Malim’ as your context

2. Prepare the necessary items for verbal and visual presentation format

IMPORTANT DATES:

1. Case Study Visit- 10th January 2023

2. Presentation and Submission of Project 1- 20th January 2023
