Site studies towards reacting a series of architectural interventions
Site Resilience
Townscape is the art which can transform a group of buildings from meaningless muddles into a meaningful composition, or a complete town from a workable diagram on paper into a three-dimensional living environment for human beings. Resilience in the planning can be seen in the town’s functionality to work as one component in the sustainable development, the preparedness and response towards future crises and finally, the capacity of the communities to recover after a crisis.
The development of the rail line, the preservation of the historic area, the presence to Proton City's industrial sector, and the educational role played by UPSI all contribute to Tanjong Malim's status as "multiple townscapes." Recognising the significant aspects of the townscape that contribute to the feeling of place is an essential step in the process of preserving the one-of-a-kind character of the townscape. This is one of the crucial factors that should be considered.

“Nostalgia memories play an important role in making places recognisable where places are remembered based on the memories of the past associated with the place and thus evoke meanings to the people. These memories are important to the residents in that they provide a sense of continuity and that the longer the elements had been around, the more memories they evoked [ ] Visual memory can be derived not just by preserving past artifacts but also through the process of rekindling memories by the presence of new elements that have association with past events by means of design or activities that relate to the past.” (Prof. Shuhana Shamsuddin, 2011)

PROJECT 2B- THE URBAN STRATEGY (MACRO-SITE)- INDIVIDUAL
Based on your works in P1 (literature reviews, design framework and narrative poster), in P2B you will be required to interpret these narratives and your site cataloguing and apply them on a macro-site scale. Your proposal will be based on the selected theme and preferred design techniques to generate your own speculative urban strategy solutions. You will learn how to describe the environment, the series of urban elements and design interventions Hence, a series of drawings and diagrams are required, as well as models, visualising the urban strategy (with possible interventions).
The aim of this exercise is to develop your own idea of a townscape/collective townscapes The potential implications of your site synthesis and design thinking may even promote the town resilience and sustainability in a series of considerations:
1. How can the knowledge economy thrive in a small town, now that universities can be involved in local growth collaborations?
2. It takes a village to create a Transit Oriented Development, how can Tanjong Malim’s small-town inclusivity and proximity to the rail development respond to this?
3. How can the industrial community of Proton City help to create place-making spaces in Tanjong Malim for better access and linkages?
4. What could be a new typological organisation for the present conditions by revisiting the history of the old town?

PROJECT 2C- THE BUILDING STRATEGY (MICRO-SITE)- INDIVIDUAL
Within your urban strategy’s interventions, develop your choice of interventions. For this exercise you can develop a few interventions or only choose one to develop.
Interventions such as;
1. ”Supporting program” to complement existing programmes in Tanjong Malim based on your ideation
2. “Main program” based on your ideation
With this in mind, produce a series of drawings and models visualising the interventions as part of your building strategies (in the scale of 1:500 & 1:250). Visualizations are heavily dependent on your individual design. The work may build on drawings of existing conditions and may exploit a whole pallet of different and appropriate working drawing techniques
To support these building strategies, you may use the following contents:
1. Zoning and usage of the building
2. Building and Planning Authority guidelines
3. Natural Physical Features (Landscape / vegetation)
4. Man-Made Features (Infrastructures)
5. Circulation, Transportation, Node
6. Sensory, Sense of Place.
7. Human and Cultural
8. Environment and Climate
9. Building Typology
10. Proposed Programmes (Activities & Building Usage)
SUBMISSION
REQUIREMENTS (PROJECT
2B & 2C- INDIVIDUAL)
1. Urban Strategy- Conceptual urban strategies (this can be done as a 2D illustration or axonometric drawing, series of layered models, etc) and blow-ups / sketches and experiential scenes/imageries to capture design intent and programmatic formulation of the above
2. Building Strategy- Series of diagrams / models / mixed media to accentuate your building strategy in terms of programs, connectivity, mass, components etc. based on the urban strategy proposed
3. All works of P2B and P2C is to ultimately be compiled in 2 A0 (Portrait)
4. Submission of Project 2B and 2C- 24th Feb 2023
