STAR STYLE It’s always a struggle to find that balance between comfort and style when walking the airport runway, and if you’re like me, you’ll find yourself packing and re-packing bags and suitcases five times, only to change your planned attire before making a decision. Sneakers may be comfortable, but let’s face it: Those heels would look good with the dark blue jeans you got yesterday. Let’s have a look at how the stars deal with airport fashion in their busy jetset lives What do you think, are Qri’s baby pink feathers your favourite, or do you prefer Suzy’s chic style?
Comfort isn’t always a priority when you’re a famous kpop star. Miss A’s Suzy was sporting a pair of high heeled ankle boots with her black skinny jeans and leather jacket, giving off a confident rock star vibe. As many style points as the young Missy is getting though, my only question is: How long did it take to get through security in that?
Returning from her concert in Taiwan, the Queen of Kpop, BoA, was sporting an all-white outfit with a tee from brand name “Comme des Garcon”. The fashionista didn’t miss a single beat, matching her golden creepers with the details on her fold-top clutch and a pair of white rimmed sunglasses. But is it too much? Maybe trade the “granny pants” for a pair of skinny jeans for a more flattering look around the waist. How do you like the Queen’s airport fashion?
Girls Generation’s maknae Seohyun is known for her shy, clever personality, and reserved being. This seems to seep through well in her choice of fashion as the girls travel back and forth between their busy schedules. She perfectly balances out comfort with style, in a classic black and white jumpsuit, accessorizing with flats, a large white bag and a high ponytail. Low maintenance, and perfect for when you’re on the go. Well done, Seohyun.
Another fashionista on the airport radar: T-Ara’s Qri. Qri has definitely got the diva flare down, with her blonde hair, baby pink, feathery jacket and white glitzy heels, showing off her long legs. Definitely no laying low in this part of town! Flashy as it is, the outfit does match well, and Qri’s bright smile gives her Barbie doll-inspired look a pass.
As EXO makes their long awaited comeback with “Wolf”, EXO M’s leader Kris walked the airport like his own personal catwalk. His low cut white tee showed off his neck and collarbones, while the yellow jacket provides a boost of colour, perfect for early summer. Paired with loose fitted trousers and comfy shoes, Kris looks comfortable yet stylish while in the air.

Time To Meet
Korean Phrase
Phrase: 10시쯤에 만나자 ! Romanisation: (ssib-ssi-jjeum-e man-na-ja) Easy Pronunciation: (ship-shi-jeum-e ma-na-ja) Translation: “Let’s meet at 10 o’clock!”
Grammar • The Korean word for ‘ten’ is 십 and we use 시 to denote that this is the hour. • 쯤 means ‘about’ or ‘around’ and the -에 is the particle which tells us that something is taking place at 10 o’clock. It is a ‘location marking particle’. • The verb ‘to meet’ is 만나다. Here, the verb is conjugated with the verb ending -자 that can be translated to give the verb a nuance of ‘Let’s [verb]’ but it cannot be directly translated. This particular ending can only be used when you are speaking comfortably with another person, who is younger than you or who you are close friends with.
Variations (with easy pronunciation) 10 시쯤에 만납시다 – (ship-shi-jeum-e ma-nap-shi-da) Formal verb ending. 10 시쯤에 만날래요 – (ship-shi-jeum-e ma-nal-le-yo) Polite, more casual. This sentence is great as a building block, but you can add more to it! Try adding a location (followed by your location marking particle, of course!). You can change the time of day, or even use a time phrase instead of a specific time, eg. ‘tomorrow’ – 내일. If you wanted, you could even change the verb, eg. ‘to eat’ – 먹다.

EGG ROLL MAKES 2 ROLLS!
INGREDIENTS
4 eggs
RECIPE
1. Prepare the vegetables and meat and put
1 vegetable stock cube 2 spring onions ½ pepper diced (green, red or yellow) 4 large mushrooms (sliced into thin strips) Handful of cooked meat, (chicken/ham/etc) 80g rice
them in a large bowl with the stock cube. Don’t dissolve the stock cube, put the whole cube in the bowl.
2. Cook the rice according to the instructions
on the packet. Drain and leave to one side.
3. Crack the eggs and add them to the bowl of ingredients. Mix all the ingredients in the bowl until everything is covered by the eggs. 4. Put a frying pan on high heat and add
cooking oil.
5. When the pan is hot enough, add half the
contents of the bowl. Use a fork to check the underside isn’t burning.
6. After 2-3 minutes, take the pan off the heat
and line up half of the rice at one edge of the egg mix. Carefully use a spatula to fold the mix three times, starting at the rice end, so that the rice is in the middle of the roll. Press down on the top of the roll with the spatula to flatten.
7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 with the rest of
the egg mix.
8. Serve! You can either eat one roll as a
whole meal (in which case this recipe makes two servings) or slice each roll into inch-thick slices and share.
**Feel free to use different vegetables or more/less of any ingredients**
SHINHWA W the legend ith what seems like a new debut every hour, the world of k-pop is a myriad of genres, groups, concepts and idols competing for their minute in the spotlight. It is a struggle to become recognised by those outside one’s own fandom, to reach a certain level of respect in a world where hit song after hit song is replaced on a weekly basis. And what is waiting for those who make it over that high set bar? More hard work and higher expectations. Not something for just anyone. But there are those who fight their way through the challenges…
One group in particular stands out as the Legends of k-pop. Celebrating their fifteen year anniversary this year, along with an impressive half of the group’s celebrating their 34th birthday, Shinhwa is certainly not your regular k-pop group. Recently sweeping the scene with This Love, a jazz inspired pop song with a sleek vogue style choreography, the six member group are still going strong. The comeback earned as many as eight awards from different music shows – making it their biggest success yet. Having made their debut as early as 1998, Shinhwa is considered one of the founding groups of modern k-pop. The group consists of their leader
Eric Mun, along with members Lee Minwoo, Kim Dongwan, Shin Hyesung, Jun-Jin and Andy Lee. Originally from SM Entertainment, they enjoyed huge success among fans, performing alongside other older groups such as g.o.d, H.O.T. and Fin.K.L.. Shinhwa’s name when translated means legend, and over the years they have fought to have their name represent their standing. Just a year into their career Shinhwa won their first award with T.O.P (Twinkling of Paradise) for Best Rookie Music Video. The album of the same name, their second, charted for twenty-four weeks in the Korean monthly charts. Their third album, Only One, and fifth album, Perfect Man, debuted at number one.
In 2003 their contract with SM Entertainment expired. While Eric, Hyesung and Minwoo were offered new contracts, the trio declined and the group moved to Good Entertainment where they pursued solo activities while battling with SM to keep their group name. The boys won the case through and Shinhwa continued their solo and group activities. With the Hallyu wave’s increasing popularity,
they enjoyed success overseas and were among the first Korean performers to go on a full Asia tour in 2006, performing in Japan, China, Hong Kong and Singapore. Reaching their 10th anniversary in 2008, Shinhwa and their fanclub, Shinhwa Changjo (which literally means ‘to become Legend’), had already become quite the legend, living up to their name. However as we all know and dread – military service spares none. Starting from leader Eric to youngest member Andy, all members except for Hyesung (exempt due to knee surgery) completed their military service between 2008 and 2012. However they did not let their time apart go to waste. Before enlisting, Andy and Eric founded their own companies: New Dream Entertainment and Top Class Entertainment, respectively. The companies managed the artists’ solo careers, in addition to debuting their own groups in time. Not everyone might know Shinhwa’s maknae Andy is the director and CEO behind both popular boy groups Teen
continues Top and 100%. Meanwhile Eric’s manager runs his company which has produced girl group Stellar in 2011.
The members of Shinhwa might be seen as a crown jewel in k-pop, and represent a dream for many other groups and fanclubs. The Shinhwa Changjo have stayed faithful towards the six men through every step of their journey, culminating in the founding of Shinhwa Company in 2012. The company is run by the members and focuses solely on group activities. Since coming back to the k-pop scene with The Return in 2012, Shinhwa have opened the eyes of many new fans to look further back into the world of k-pop. Their success has only grown with their status as longest living group yet – and according to members, they don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Their wish is to be able to stand on stage in front of their fans even when they become grandfathers, which – given their current ages, is a slightly closer future than your average idols in their early 20’s.
Not that Shinhwa seem to be in any rush. None of the members are confirmed to be dating as of yet, and with their busy schedule as of late, it would be a feat indeed. Having concluded promotions for This Love, Shinhwa are scheduled for a break from their popular variety show Shinhwa Broadcast to embark on their second Grand Tour which will run its course over the summer with six stops across Asia. Though successful, Shinhwa have not been without tough times. Even when you take away the lawsuit with SM
(which, thankfully, ended amicably), Andy had to take a hiatus from the group to travel to the America in order to look after his sick mother back in 2001. The stress of the situation meant that Andy, in his words, could not sleep without soju and asprin for a long time. Minwoo has also mentioned that he used to eat food that was passed its best to become ill, just to get a break from the hectic schedule. Despite all this the guys have come through it all and become quite an inspiration. Still not convinced this is the group for you? If you haven’t already, make sure to check out Shinhwa ‘vogueing’ their way through the This Love music video and take a listen to their latest The Classic album, which perfectly showcases a mix of heavenly mature vocals and great dance songs. And if you’re more into the old school k-popping beats, take a look at our choice of Top Ten Shinhwa songs from way back in our recommendations.

Let’s Go LoKo! Recently, auditions have been held for the K-Pop Dance Cover Contest 2013. The first round consists of sending a dance video in, the second round is the live performance in whichever region you are in, and the third round is an all expenses paid trip to South Korea! This year, all girl dance crew LoKo have been selected to go and compete in South Korea! LoKo consists of 6 girls, Tammy (the leader) Caroline, Deanna, Nikki, Akill and Amy. We managed to get a chance to interview with Caroline Deanna and Amy about this great opportunity.
How did LoKo come about? Caroline: The first class we taught was on September 5th 2011. I met Tammy through my sister, as she knew that I was into K-Pop and so was Tammy. The problem was that I didn’t have any other friends who were into
K-Pop, so my sister introduced us and that are how I met Tammy. She had the idea of setting up a class, but because she didn’t have any other K-Pop dancers to help her out, she didn’t actually set it up. When she asked me if the class was a good idea, I said
“Yeah! Let’s do it!” and we’ve been running ever since.
What does the name ‘LoKo’ mean? Caroline: It stands for London (Lo) and Korea (Ko). You can actually see the countries flags in the logo.
How long does it take everybody to pick up new choreography? Deanna: We all just learn it at home. It depends on the dance, sometimes it can take a couple of hours, sometimes more.
The one which took the longest to learn though would be Max Step, because there was no official dance video for it.
Tell us about your audition, how did it go? Caroline: We found out about the competition at the last minute, so we only had 5 hours to learn the choreography and practise it. We then recorded it the next day and found out we got into the regional rounds.
How big is this competition to you? Deanna: We didn’t even expect to get as far as going to Korea; we just did it for fun. I don’t think it will change the classes much. Caroline: When we found out we won, some of us were completely silent in shock, and some of us cried, some of us screamed. We couldn’t believe it, we didn’t even get
up when they called our name. I’m sure Tammy is still crying to this day. (laughs) Deanna: I think it goes to show how far we’ve come. Some of the contestants have only been together for the competition, whereas we’ve been together for a while. When we started the classes, we only had 8 students, but now we have 30-40. We’ve been on Korean TV, we’ve been on British TV. We used to practise in Tammy’s living room but now we use a dance studio. So, we’ve gone from something small to something big, and now we’re going to Korea to do something we love. Which is mental.
In the regional round, were you surprised to see a support group dedicated to LoKo? We didn’t even know we had a support group! It’s difficult to know who was there for what because the JYP auditions were being held as well, but we never thought that they would be here to support us! When we were called up, all of these people just came out of nowhere. They came out of the cracks in the walls. (laughs) We wrote on Facebook that we would perform there, if anybody would like to come but a lot more people than we expected arrived for us! We wasn’t sure if they even all fit in, because it was quite crowded as it was.
Some people were actually wearing the LoKo shirts and badges, openly supporting us like that which made us really happy. Even if we don’t win, that was really nice.
What are your plans for when you get to Korea? They said they will give us a week, and on one day they will give us a tour around Seoul, then we can go and do shopping. Alongside that, we will also do a lot of rehearsals with a professional, well known choreographer.
So that’s going to be really exciting. For anybody who isn’t familiar with your workshop, would you tell us a bit more about that? The dates change every month, but there is always one once a month. We update a lot on our Facebook page about this

EXO finally made their long-awaited comeback after about a year away with the very wild track ‘Wolf’. As expected, the boys have dominated the charts with this latest single, showing a very dark and almost tribal concept. EXO’s fashion is always interesting, and this music video shows off an innovative, yet rather understated style. Want to see if you can mimic this look on the British high street? Look no further! One of EXO’s trademark fashion items is hareem trousers, whilst their past concepts have featured some quite extravagant versions with crazy patterns and shiny patches, the trousers for this particular concept are very plain. Black hareems (or even black skinny jeans if you are not a fan of the Arabian style) make a great wardrobe staple as you can pair them with almost anything. One of the focal points of the look is the white socks with black striping. The EXO boys layer these on the outside of their trousers or even pair them with quarter length shorts, topping it off with black or white bandanas. This is a very brave style and you may not want to go this far for your daily look, but even if you leave the socks and instead tie a bandana around your wrist or through a belt loop, you will still gain that EXO flavour.

This entire look is very plain, with the detail being taken by the accessories that accompany the outfits, so take this as an opportunity to go wild with your jewellery. The members tend to go with chunky gold, spiked or tasselled pieces to achieve their untamed feel. Remember to keep your details as tribal as possible, Aztec patterns are a perfect fit with this look. EXO’s concept is (thankfully) not as over-the-top as it could have been, but this look definitely gives a very wild theme. Also, as with EXO’s past concepts, the idea of being part of the earth and controlled by the elements is powerful here. If you keep that in mind whilst constructing the look for yourself, you can’t go far wrong! Go and embrace your inner Wolf! Awooooo!

Let’s skip the details of me, walking around my room and around college, blasting BIGBANG, and crying into my bag and books. The only reason for this is because in a few short months, I would be seeing my ultimate bias group perform. The group that introduced me to the land of candyfloss and crazy fans that is k-pop.
It’s D-Day; we go in, I’m at the front, the lights dim, the curtains fall and I burst into tears. The paramedics are already looking at me and the guards as well, probably thinking that they have an early one. Of course, the set list was huge, and if any of you attended the first show, you know that it was hectic; people were getting pulled out, people were fainting, passing out, some actually kicked out from the concert. It was hectic, but hectic is an understatement. Either way, it was still memorable. I feel sorry for the VIP section, and I would advise you to not buy a VIP ticket if it is being offered. Let me tell you why. While you get some interaction, you don’t get it all of the time, plus, you are standing behind them, on the side of the stage. Due to the layout of the stage, the ‘I’ layout, the members mostly performed right at the front, where they could address the
larger side of the audience. That’s why I chose the general standing ticket, that and the fact that it was cheaper than the VIP tickets. And I’m glad I did. Not only do you interact with the audience, feel the atmosphere better and have fun, but you also interact with the idols. Seungri, as many of you know, was a troll that night, and was also showing his dance moves, so I had the pleasure of witnessing that up front when he came to my side of the stage, which was a lot. Daesung however, I didn’t interact much with, which was a shame; but I think it was mainly because he was nervous. Who wouldn’t be? So the only interaction that I had was when he looked right at me and rolled his hips. But that was enough to send me into a mini heart attack and trying to reach for the water on the step below me. I’m only 5’1”, so I struggled a lot, putting on a show for both the guards and the idols, making them laugh. Since when has dying of thirst and having my ovaries explode funny?
Now, I’m about to go into the highlight of my night, and I know what most of you are thinking already; thinking that I’m lying or that they could have been looking or interacting with the person beside me. But, if you ever had any interaction with an idol, you know. When they look at you, they lock eye contact with you. They literally stare you down. And you feel it yourself. You can
feel their gaze on you, and you can feel your heart beat speed up.
That’s how I felt throughout the whole show.
Especially when Taeyang decided that wearing a shirt is boring, so he should take it off and pretty much make love to the damn stage right in front of me. Same goes for TOP, when he decided that he’ll run around, grin and hold my hand, throw all his water at my friend, right in her face, giggle like a two-year-old, give her the water bottle, hold my hand again and run back onto the stage.
So when GD (my future husband, may I add), decided that hey, it would be a good idea to get off stage and interact with the crowd. I almost died. I didn’t scream like everyone else did, I didn’t even lean forward. I actually moved back, clutched onto my CROWN light stick and cried quietly. Why? I don’t know. I can’t explain it. It felt like my idol was walking past because that man is my idol, my fashion, music and life idol. He noticed me; he felt the gap in the crowd, but he just walked past, rapping, touching everyone’s hands. So when he walked past my area and around by the VIP section, I moved forward again and simply watched him, almost in a daze. That was a mistake. He came running back, leaned forward so his face was pretty much inches from
BIGBANG ALIVE TOUR
FAN ACCOUNT mine (it was so close I could feel his breath), smirked and ran back onto the stage.
I may have died and gone to heaven. Because I was still for a few minutes, just staring, mouth open, hands trembling. But of course, if anyone reading this has been to a BIGBANG concert, they know that the dancers like to interact as well. So I had the pleasure of having the Kwon twins come right up to me, lift their shirts up and flash their abs. The second concert, I was in the stands, so the interaction was limited. TOP looked at my friend and I during his goodbye speech, when he said that he’ll remember us and miss us; GD and Seungri looked right into my camera, GD witnessed me dancing to One of a Kind, in other words, shaking my booty like there was no tomorrow, and he also saw me literally breaking apart during Haru Haru, where he motioned for me to smile.
Overall, if you’re looking for advice on how to get your idols attention, I have none, because I’m still baffled as to how I did it. I can only say this, if you go to a concert, don’t go and try to force interaction, just go and have fun. Enjoy yourself; make memories and sing, dance, scream until you lose your voice.

THE BADDEST FEMALE TUTORIAL This make-up tutorial will be based on CL’s in her music video of The Baddest Female. CL has much smaller eyelids, and can therefore get away with completely covering them with eyeliner. I have bigger eyelids so I have adapted this. I really like this look, it’s simple and it’s good for any occasion. So, let’s get started!

Draw a thin line on your upper eyelid. To make it smooth I like to start halfway across, and then join it up.
Draw a straight line from where the eyeliner ends, and where the end wing ends. Fill in any gaps. You might want to keep your eyes closed for a while to avoid smudging.
Create the wing. Make sure it points upwards like this. It’s up to you how long the wing is, CL’s is quite long.
Add some dark gold/brown eye shadow on the outer corner of your lower eyelid. Add mascara/fake eyelashes! Now, you’re done!

Galbi Bros Food Stall
Hoxton Street Market, London, N1 6PJ (close to Hoxton overground) The stall moves around, be sure to check out their social networking sites for updates Not so much an event, but something all Korean foodies should be aware of. Galbi Bros. opened a stall in Hoxton Street Market, London last month. The creators Moses and Hanbit combine Korean BBQ and burgers to give a Western twist on a delicious traditional Korean dish. We suggest you go and sample some for yourselves! Interestingly, the bros behind the food stall have made a couple of parodies of PSY’s songs entitled: ‘London Style’ and ‘English Gentleman’ which you can watch on YouTube, showing that they are not only adventurous when it comes to food! www.galbibros.com | fb.com/GabiBros | twitter.com/galbibros | youtube.com/user/mokim

We’ve launched our Official UKP K-Pop Chart! The UKP Music Chart is a unique insight into the UK audience for K-Pop. It takes into account UK-focused rankings by major music charts, and sales numbers from various retailers, as well as the voices of fans, media presence and other factors that measure both popularity and commercial success. This applies to both the song chart and album charts. The results are controlled by the real statistics and real numbers, and the results are just as cold and unbiased. Uninfluenced by us. Find out just how our chart works and see the first week in action on the website at the following links.
