Dutch oven added to Farm Show Cook-Off

Visitors to the 45th annual Colusa Farm Show, the Granddaddy of all Farm Shows, can expect yet another exciting agriculture-based exhibition this year. This year’s show has something for everyone. The volunteers who make-up the Colusa Farm Show Steering Committee bring a vast array of different experiences and information to ensure that this show is always at its best. As was the tradition of the Show’s forefather, present day volunteers continue to help keep the Colusa Farm Show on the cutting edge of agriculture. Additionally, the Show continues to grow, and new events are added to improve on each year’s program. This year, we are again hosting the Commodity CookOff Contest featuring Colusa County’s premier crops: rice and nuts.

Central Valley Gas Storage meets gas storage needs, brings economic growth

Howard Busch of Browns Valley (left) visited with Central Valley Gas Storage project director Jim Kiefer (right) at the CVGS Fair booth last June. The two are displaying the evironmentally friendly shopping bags the company gave away at its booth.

Central Valley Gas Storage, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nicor, is proposing to convert the depleted Princeton Gas Field into a highdeliverability, multi-cycle storage field. In doing so, it will help meet California’s growing demand for gas storage and economically benefit the county. Central Valley Gas Storage will be located near the unincorporated town of Princeton in Colusa County, California. The proposed Colusa County project is located in a rural agricultural area, with historic and ongoing gas storage and delivery operations. The Princeton Field produced approximately 9.8 bcf of gas between 1954 and 1992. The field will ultimately be developed to provide 8 Bcf of working gas capacity. The field will be designed to achieve a maximum withdrawal and injection capability of 200 million standard cubic feet per day (Mmscfd). The significant economic benefits that Central Valley Gas Storage will bring to the area include sales tax and annual property tax revenue. Central Valley will work to identify area contractors, vendors and suppliers for the construction of the facility. When operating, Central Val-

ley Gas Storage will employ six to eight full-time employees. Central Valley and its environmental and engineering consultants, have been in contact with landowners and a variety of local, state, and federal agencies, and have worked to become a part of the community. “Central Valley Gas Storage is committed to employing a collaborative approach in establishing good relationships with the landowners and local community who will be the neighbors of our facilities,” said project manager Jim Kiefer. Nicor Gas is one of the nation’s largest gas distribution companies. Owned by Nicor, Inc., (NYSE: GAS) a holding company, Nicor Gas has provided safe, reliable and costeffective natural gas services for more than 50 years.

Colusa Casino Resort Continues Farm Show Support

“It’s a new day and it’s still all about you at the Colusa Casino Resort,” are familiar words heard throughout the valley. It isn’t only a slogan or a catch phrase. The Colusa Casino Resort continues to support the communities that surround it. Never forgotten is the 44th District Agricultural Association (44th DAA) and the needs of the Colusa County Fairgrounds. Fairgrounds CEO Carolan Meek said that she and the 44th DAA Board continue to appreciate the Casino Resort and the efforts it makes to support the fairgrounds and all of its events. “We can always count on them to step up in support not only at the fairgrounds, but in the county as a whole,” Meek said. Once again the Colusa Casino

Resort will co-sponsor the Colusa Farm Show Commodity Cookoff. It will sponsor the event with J. Nair Media & Photography. Additionally, it is the sponsor for the Farm Show commodity bags. This is the third commodity cookoff the Casino Resort has cosponsored. Since Native American gaming became a reality, the Cachil Dehe Band of Wintun Indians has begun to realize its dream of economic self-sufficiency. The revenues earned from the Colusa Casino Resort are used to support vital government programs, infrastructure projects, and economic development for the benefit of our tribal members and community. From improved health care to increased educational opportunities for its tribal members and de-

scendents, the lives of the tribal members, have been greatly enhanced. Originally, Colusa Casino Resort opened as Colusa Bingo in 1986 as a 1,200 seat high-stakes bingo hall. The first 80 slot machines were introduced in 1992. In 2004 it undertook its largest and most impressive expansion project to date. Expansion includes the addition of a hotel, additional casino floor space to accommodate slot machines table games, and increased restaurant space which is home to a 24-hour restaurant, Wintun Steakhouse, and the newly remodeled Jack’s Lounge. As with many gaming tribes, Colusa Casino Resort has been a proven profit center for the Colusa Indian Community Council. With Casino seed money, the Colusa Indian

Community Council has embarked on various endeavors in an effort to ensure the tribe’s future growth and financial prosperity. Some of those efforts include: The Colusa Indian Health Center, Wellness Center, and Hand-in-Hand daycare facility - all of which are open to the public. Its portfolio also includes the purchase and development of agricultural lands, as this is an integral part of its diversification plan. Incorporated into some of these lands is the tribe’s hunt club – Outdoor Adventures which provides big game, waterfowl and sport fishing trips throughout the year and as an exclusive guide service of Colusa Casino Resort. Clients enjoy superb accommodations at discounted rates and first class dining at a variety of food venues within the casino.

Family Water alliance www.familywateralliance.com

Family Water Alliance is a coalition of people who are concerned about the future of agriculture, private property rights, rural communities, and a balance between man and nature.

HELPING TO PROTECT FARMERS RIGHT TO FARM

Debbi Lemburg, project cordinator Sacramento Valley Fish Screen Program

Since 1996, Family Water Alliance (FWA) has been supporting efforts in salmon recovery and actively protecting our fishery resources through their Sacramento River Small Diversion Fish Screen Program. Through the development of the screen program, FWA has led a long-term proactive program to assist farmers with the screening of agricultural diversions to not only protect the fisheries, but to also protect their water rights and right to farm. With the salmon populations in crisis and the crash of the fisheries in the Delta, FWA has changed the program name to the Sacramento Valley Fish Screen Program, and began Phase 7 of the program in October 2007. Working closely with our program partners, FWA was successful in writing and receiving grant funding allowing for the screening of up to 15 diversions. Three fish screen systems are set for installation in the fall of 2010, with five sites currently selected for screening in 2011. This year, FWA will be seeking willing landowners again within the “legal” Delta to expand our program to the lower reaches of the Sacramento River. The program also includes a biological assessment to gather data on fish entrainment for a period of two irrigation seasons prior to the installation of the fish screen systems. A range of diversion sizes and locations have been selected in order to obtain the most useful scientific data.

Family Water alliance P.O. BOx 365 maxWell, ca 95955

Throughout the program, FWA assures that landowners receive technical, educational and financial assistance in all phases of the project. FWA also works closely with the landowners assisting and submitting required environmental permits, and represents the landowner in dealings with the permitting agencies. Each diverter participating in the pilot assessment will be provided a fish screen upon assessment completion, thus assuring the landowner’s rights are not compromised. In addition, the landowner diversions will be referred to as a site rather than by a landowner name, until the assessment is completed and the fish screen has been installed. The assessments are being performed by Natural Resource Scientists, Inc. (NRSI) an environmental sciences consulting firm specializing in scientific investigations and resolution of complex resource issues associated with water project development. NRS has conducted similar assessments for Glenn-Colusa Irrigation District and Reclamation District 108. The goal of the assessments is to help develop criteria for prioritizing future fish screening efforts. Intake Screens, Inc. (ISI) will be fabricating and installing their site specific, state-of-art fish screen systems at each selected diversion. MBK Engineers, Inc. will provide engineering construction management, oversight, and approvals. FWA, ISI, MBK, and NRS all have ex-

tensive experience and knowledge that will be invaluable to the goals and objectives of Phase 7 of the Sacramento Valley Fish Screen Program. At the end of 2010, FWA will have completed 27 successful fish screen projects representing the cumulative screening of over 788 cubic feet per second of California water, while at the same time protecting over 27,787 acres of productive agricultural lands. FWA will continue to work towards restoring the fishery resource, while protecting agriculture, water rights, and rural communities. Funding for Phase 7 is provided by the Central Valley Project Improvement Act’s Anadromous Fish Screen Program and Proposition 84 through the CALFED Ecosystem Restoration Program, administered by the California Department of Fish and Game. All work under Phase 7 is conducted with oversight by the Anadromous Fish Screen Program (AFSP), which is a U.S. Department of the Interior fish screening program jointly administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR). If you are interested participating in the fish screen program, please contact the Sacramento Valley Fish Screen Program at (530) 438-2026, or submit a letter of interest to P.O. Box 365, Maxwell, CA 95955. For more information on the Sacramento Valley Fish Screen Program, please visit www.fwafishforum.com.

CHP Brings Regulation Info to Farm Show The California Highway Patrol (CHP) education seminar is returning to the Colusa Farm Show this year. Officers will present seminars on commercial vehicles and licensing and on regulated loads at the Stagehands Theater on Wednesday, February 3. Commercial Vehicles and Licensing will be from 11 a.m. until noon. Regulated Loads will be presented from 1 p.m until 2 p.m. The sessions will conclude with an hour long discussion forum from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. Commercial Vehicles and Licensing will explain the regulations which define a “commercial vehicle” as a motor vehicle of a type required to be registered and is used or maintained for the transportation of persons for profit or compensation, or designed, used or maintained for the transportation of property. “This can encompass everything from the larger 18 wheel trucks all the way down to a 1 ton pick-up,” said CHP Officer John Edwards. “We will cover drivers’ licenses, hours of service and required operating authorities,” he added. In the farming/ranching community

For all of your automotive needs

there are specific exceptions that are allowed as long as the operator meets the required criteria. The Regulated Loads seminar examines the topic of when the Federal Government enacts changes to the regulations governing the safe transportation of people or property each State has 3 years to adopt those specific laws. In 2007, California changed its loading regulations in order to meet the Federal mandate. This adoption caused several changes and the deletion of many laws that had been in place for years. Since this adoption took place California has been able to re-establish some of our previous loading regulations as they pertain to the agricultural industry. This hourlong seminar will cover the current regulations and any exemptions as they pertain to the loading requirements. During the open forum discussion, questions and concerns from the audience on any law or regulation that has not been discussed will be addressed. CHP personnel that will be present for each specific topic: Tim Huegel, MCS- III : Tim is the

supervisor of the Motor Carrier Safety Unit in Northern Division. Dave Mickelson, Sergeant: Mickelson is one of two commercial supervisors and oversees the daily operation of the commercial unit. John Edwards, Officer : Edwards is the Commercial Industry Education Program coordinator. Zimm Udovich, Officer : Udovich is a Mobile Road Enforcement Officer and CIEP associate instructor Steve Cooper, Officer : Cooper is a Mobile Road Enforcement Officer and works out of the Williams Office.

Street in Williams which will become a sister-facility to the Colusa shop. The facility is expected to

open in the Spring of 2010 with the older Selover heading its day-today operations. The Williams facility will offer general auto repair work as well as highway repairs such as roadside assistance. Tow services will be offered at both facilities, however; AAA approved towing is only being offered on the westside of the county (Highway-20 west of the 2047 Canal.) Glass work will also be offered at both facilities. Repair and painting estimates will also be done at both facilities with the actual work being done in Colusa.

When Donald Selover began his auto collision repair center in Colusa in the winter of 1941, he may never have dreamed that the business would still be in existence some seventy-years later. Today, the 20,000 square foot shop located at 401 Jay Street, is still family-owned with Selover’s son, Rich, and his grandson Richard, at the helms. Rich Selover became a partner with his father in 1980, and

since that time his wife Lisa, and son Richard, have also joined-in the family business. Lisa manages the office and handles the neverending amounts of paperwork, while the younger Selover works besides his dad and most recently has taken over the day-to-day operations of the business. “He has a knack for this business,” Rich Selover said. “Like myself, Richard grew up around the shop
