THE OFFICIAL

It is our pleasure to have you attend this year’s fair. We expect it to be better than ever! The Board of the 44th District Agricultural Association and I are pleased that you have chosen to make our fair a part of your “Stay-cation.” This year’s theme - Blue Jeans and Country Dreams - was chosen to remind our patrons, volunteers and exhibitors, that you truly can follow your dreams wherever they take you. Without you, our fair would not continue. We invite you to attend the many attractions and special performances during the June 9-12 Fair. There is a little something for everyone including the traditional Miss Colusa County and Mini Miss pageants, the music of the Jimmy Dunlap Band, Butterfly Adventures and Cap’n Jack Spareribs the Pirate. This year our grandstands are filled with Motorized Madness. There is Flat Track Motorcycle Racing, a Tuff Truck, Mud Drag, Quad Racing Competition, and the always popular Demolition Derby. There are exhibits, commercial vendors, the Junior Livestock Auction, food galore, and many strolling entertainers. New this year is the Premier Mushroom Demonstration Stage located in Festival Hall. Come find out how to cook different dishes with mushrooms. Like most County Fairs, the Colusa County Fair is the premier showcase event for our many talented exhibitors, our county’s youth and the overall bounty of our county. We hope that you enjoy your time at the Colusa County Fair.

We'll time flies when your having fun! The year is halfway over and now it’s time to kick off the summer with Colusa County’s biggest event of the year, the County Fair. On behalf of J.Nair Media and The Luis Barrrera Design Studio, I’d like to thank all of our advertisers for partnering with us on this year’s Official Guide to the fair. We also like to thank the Colusa County Fair Board for once again awarding this project to us. Your continued support and belief in our product is how we are able to produce award winning publications for Colusa County. This marks the fourth publication The Luis Barrera Design Studio and J.Nair Media have partner with the Colusa County Fair to publish. We are proud to announce that our 2010 guides to The Farm Show and The Fair won “best in state” at the Western Fair Association State Conference. We’d like to thank, Carolan Meek for her dedication and hard work during our collaboration. We also like to thank Kathy Craigo Media Consulting for it’s contributions to our press releases. As always we like to thank YOU! For all your great feed back and support of our publications as well as the Fair events. Without your contituous support and word of mouth promotion of our magazines, it would be very difficult to do out job. Our small community inspires us to create products and publications that would proudly challenge large city’s publication. Thank You and have a blast at the fair.

44th DAA Brings home

ongoing events

& Attractions The 44th District Agricultural Association (Colusa County Fair) came home with a number of awards from the annual Western Fairs Association (WFA) Convention in January. Out of 650 entries received by the WFA Achievement Awards Program, the 44th DAA was recognized with two first places, one second place and two honorable mentions. Colusa County Fair CEO Carolan Meek commented that she is very pleased and proud that the efforts of the Colusa County Fair received recognition on the state level. “We brought home first place for our Book or Magazine entry for both our 2010 Farm Show Guide and our 2010 Colusa County Fair Guide,” said Meek. Both guides were designed and published by the joint efforts of J.Nair Media and

Photography, and the Luis Barrera Design Studio. “Luis and I are very pleased that our designs helped the 44th DAA to take top honors at the Western Fairs Convention,” Nair said. “We look forward to working with the 44th DAA and perhaps other fairs in the future.” Owners; James Nair and Luis Barrera were awarded the bid to do these guides through the publication bid process offered by the Colusa County Fair Board. “We have been especially pleased with the quality of the guides that James and Luis have produced for us,” said Meek. In the Any Advertising Piece category, the 44th DAA won second place for its Motorized Madness advertisement. Honorable Mention awards were given to the Colusa Farm Show in the Non-Fair Event sponsored by the fairgrounds category as well as for the 2010 Fair Handbook designed by Johnson’s Printing. “We have worked with Johnson’s Printing on this project many times, and they always come through with a great product,” said Meek. She added, “We are pleased that the 44th DAA was recognized for the efforts it makes, not only as a once-ayear fair, but for the year around projects it promotes there.”

e Fair h T o T g Returnin

k c a r T Short

s s o r c r o t Mo Short track motorcycle racing returns to the Colusa County Fair this year. The Friday night lineup will bring back short track motorcycle racing to the fair grandstands arena. The event first appeared last year when the 44th District Agricultural Association (44th DAA) and the Community Foundation of Colusa County joined forces to bring it to the 2010 Fair venue. Gates to the event will open at 4:30 p.m., practice is at 5 p.m. and racing begins at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the 44th DAA and the Foundation which awards grants to Colusa County nonprofit groups and organizations. Foundation board member Gary Brewen, who had a brief stint as a professional short track competitor in the 1960’s and

1970’s, helped to kick start the event in 2010 and is once again serving as chair of the race this

Friday june 10th starting at 7:30 P.M.

year. Short track racing involves between 4 to 8 competitors riding around an oval track in a counter clockwise direction over a set amount of laps – usually 6 to 8 - with points or transfer positions being awarded on a sliding scale. The points are accumulated over a number of heats, with the winner being the rider who has scored the most overall. In the case of elimination heats, highest

finishing positions transfer to the next racing event. The skill of flat track racing lies in the overall ability of the rider to control his or her motorcycle when cornering and thus avoid losing places through deceleration. The race is open to two classes; 500 cc (max.) 2 stroke and 500 cc (max.) 4 stroke bikes. General rules include Max. 500 cc engine displacement, no knobby tires, riders must be 16 years of age or older, bikes in flat track trim (speedway bikes not permitted,) and no medical insurance. Riders ride at their own risk. The 44th DAA or the Community Foundation of Colusa County is not responsible for accidents. Although riders can register up to the time of the race, Brewen suggests riders enter early. There is a 42 rider maximum for this event. Brewen explained that the motorcycles used for this type of racing are stripped down street bikes. Modern short track bikes are typically modified moto-crossers. “Most of the 70’s era’ trackers’ don’t have brakes,” he said. Riders wear a steel shoe on his or her left foot. The shoe is used as a balance point when the rider “sets-up” for the turn. Each heat in the Colusa County race will be 6-10 laps run on a 1/10 plus mile flat oval track, and it takes about 3.5 minutes to complete a heat. The bikes

are usually traveling at about 20-25 mph /18 second elapsed time per lap. Riders from last year’s race have been invited to return to the event, and Brewen said he expects an even greater entry this year now that the word is out about the Colusa County Fair race. “We are offering bigger prize money this year,” said Brewen. Main Event 1st place will win $100, 2nd place will take home $75 and 3rd place will be awarded $50. The Trophy Dash winner will receive $100 and a trophy. Brewen, recalling his days as a racer said, “this form of the sport is making a comeback.” Although the Colusa race is a non-sanctioned event, Brewen said there is a strong interest in the stadium small track events of the 60’s and 70’s now coming full circle and becoming popular again. Brewen added that volunteers who helped out last year are returning. “They all did a great job last year. It was a learning experience for all of us, and we are expecting a great race this year,” he said. Rider entry fee is $30. There is a $10 pit crew (maximum 2 people) fee. More information and entry forms are available on line at the Colusa County Fair website at www.colusacountyfair.com or by calling (530) 458-2641. Racing begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 10.

WALKING

at the fair PUPPET STAGE Captain Jack Spareribs wowed the crowd at the Renaissance Fair in Colusa last fall, and now he’s coming to this year’s Colusa County Fair. The Captain will bring his swashbuckling show of magic, juggling, ventriloquism, illusions and comedy for two shows daily at the Colusa County Fair.

Pirate ship &

Flying Monkeys!! There’s even a pirate ship and flying monkeys. Captain Jack Spareribs looks suspiciously like another famous pirate with a similar name. His show is filled with excitement and lots of audience participation and is a sure crowd pleaser for the Fair. His act was voted “Best Family Fun” in the Bay Area. “We knew the minute we saw him at the Renaissance Fair that we had to have him back for the fair, said Colusa County Fair CEO Carolan Meek. “We are sure that fair patrons are going to have a great time with Jack.”

Imagine the site of a walking theatre complete with puppets to delight the entire family. Well this year at the Colusa County Fair visitors will find that very attraction. The Walking Puppet Stage will appear on the grounds daily. Puppet characters complete with their own portable stage will stroll on the fairgrounds, stopping to entertain fair patrons. Billed as a multifaceted strolling attraction, the attraction is designed to appeal to all ages. The Walking Puppet Stage has appeared at more than 75 fairs across north America and brings with it a variety of options to its venues. Colusa County Fair CEO Carolan Meek said she is very excited to have this unique and versatile attraction at the Fair. “We are looking forward to the reaction of our fair patrons when they see these great characters performing here,” she said. “It should be a lot of fun and a great addition to the grounds.”

The new Community Center at the Colusa Fairgrounds will host its first event during the 2011 Colusa County Fair. Fair CEO Carolan Meek said that the building will open with the exhibit “Antique Alley,” a new attraction to this year’s fair. The exhibit will feature vintage quilts from local quilting club; Pacific Flyway Quilters, antique tractors and other historical Colusa County Fair memorabilia as well as the history of fairs. Meek said it is especially fitting to debut this exhibit this year as it is the 200th anniversary of fairs. While Meek and the fair staff have been successful in collecting items on fair history to be included in the display,

there is still need for more. “We have found some great history items in the Colusa County Fair archives, but we know there is more information and historical items out there,” Meek said. “We know that many people in and around Colusa County have many memories of the fair, and may have items of interest to share. We would greatly appreciate the loan or donation of any of these items.” She added, “Our history in Colusa County is rich and we would like nothing better than to have an opportunity to share it with our Colusa County Fair patrons.” To contribute to the exhibit contact the Colusa County Fair office at (530) 458-2641.

A Pinewood Derby Race will be among several new attractions to be featured at this year’s Colusa County Fair. The Pinewood Derby Race is a race featuring model cars that are made of wood and purchased in a kit. Most kits cost less than $10. The Pinewood Derby Race is being presented by the local Buttes Area District which serves boys 1st - 5th grades for Cub Scouts and ages 11-17 for Boy Scouts. Buttes Area District covers all of Colusa, Yuba & Sutter Counties. Typically, the race is open to Cub Scouts in grades 1st - 5th, however; this year, the event is open to fair patrons of all ages. The Pinewood Derby is one of the most popular and successful family activities in Cub Scouting. Pinewood Derby cars are small wooden models that Cub Scouts make with help from their families. Then they race the cars in competition. The cars are powered by gravity and run down a track. Most packs have a Pinewood Derby every year. It can be run indoors or outdoors. The Pinewood Derby Race will be held during Scouts Day, a day set aside to recognize Scouting. “We can always count on the Colusa Casino Resort,” said Carolan Meek, CEO of the Colusa County Fair. Colusa Casino Resort has been a friend and supporter of the fair for many years, and this year it has once again stepped up as the lead sponsor for the fair’s entertainment. Colusa Casino Resort continues to support the communities that surround it, and the 44th DAA and the needs of the Colusa County Fairgrounds as always, continues to be important on the Casino Resort giving agenda. Meek said that she and the 44th DAA Board appreciate the Casino Resort and the effort it makes on behalf of the fairgrounds and all of its events. “They have stepped up year-after-year to help us in many ways,” Meek said. “It is especially appreciated this

year as we face some tough economic times.” Not only is the Casino Resort the lead entertainment sponsor for this year’s fair, it is also a participant in one of the fair’s new venues. The Casino Chef’s will appear on the Premier Mushroom L.P. Demonstration Stage where they will demonstrate how to prepare three different mushroom appetizers. The chefs will prepare portabella fries with ponzu sauce, portabella sauté with sweet chili sauce and portabella sushi with soy wasabi sauce. The Stage is located in Festival Hall. In recent years, the Casino Resort has expanded its food service to include a variety of menus and dining atmospheres. The Wintun Dinnerhouse serves up mouth-watering meals in a casual, family-friendly, yet elegant atmosphere. There

are plenty of palate-pleasing entrees and appetizers including juicy steaks to specialty desserts and a vast wine and liquor selection. For the more casual dinner, the Season’s Buffet serves an everchanging selection of delicious entrees as well as rotisserie, pizza oven dishes, a wok station for more made-to-order stirfry, plus homemade soup, salad and dessert selections. Freshness is the key in the menu items, making it hard to believe it is buffet-style dining. Jack’s Lounge and Grille is a kick-back, relaxed area where patrons can enjoy a refreshing beverage, listen to music and have a light snack or tasty meal from its full menu. There are also bar top video poker machines available as well as big screen TVs to watch a game. There is also a snack bar available for a quick bite on the go while

enjoying gaming at the casino. The dining at the casino now features Chef Keith Erickson, who is billed to serve up dishes; “Just like mom’s home cooking . . . only if your mom is a four star chef.” Also new to the casino this year is the addition of an innovative hand-held gaming device featuring video poker, slot and keno. The hand-held devices allow guests at the Casino to enjoy a more relaxed gaming experience. Casino guests can use the device while enjoying dining in the Wintun Dinnerhouse, or the Seasons Buffet. Guests can also operate the devices in the comfort of the Wintun Lounge or the Bingo Hall. The handheld slots weigh just over one pound, and contain a portable library of games displayed on a device roughly the size of a book which players are free to carry about the casino property. Colusa Casino Resort, in business since October 1986, is owned and operated by the Cachil Dehe Band of Wintun Indians of the Colusa Indian Community and is located 50 miles north of Sacramento. Since Native American gaming became a reality for the tribe, it has begun to realize its dream of economic self-sufficiency. The revenues earned from Colusa Casino Resort are used to support vital government programs, infrastructure projects, and economic development for the benefit of the tribal membership and community. Be a Sponsor

Sponsors welcomed at fair It isn’t too late to be a Colusa County Fair sponsor. The 72nd annual Colusa County Fair is taking place from June 9-12. Fair CEO Carolan Meek said this week that the Fair relies heavily on sponsorships and volunteers to continue bringing the best possible fair to the county. “We have longstanding and dedicated groups, clubs, businesses and individuals who return year after year to support our fair as sponsors and volunteers,” Meek said. “We could not continue without this support.” New to the fair this year is the Premier Mushroom L.P. Demonstration Stage in Festival Hall. Ongoing demonstrations of food preparation will be showcased there, and Meek is still filling time slots of interested exhibitors for the stage. Other opportunities to sponsor fair events are also still available.

i a f e h t t a Central Valley Gas Storage (CVGS) is the 2011 Colusa County Fair Wooden Coin sponsor. Central Valley Gas Storage is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nicor Enerchange. Nicor is listed on the New York Stock Exchange with the symbol “GAS.” CVGS is currently in the development phase of a natural gas storage facility between Princeton and Colusa and has for the past few months been getting to know the community and its residents. Project Development Director Jim Kiefer commented that it has been a pleasure getting to know and work with the people in the community. A few years ago, Colusa County Fair CEO Carolan Meek devised a fair promotion using wooden coins. Its popularity and success in Colusa County earned it the title of Small Fairs Best Single Day Promotion from the Western Fairs Association, and resulted in a number of other county

fairs picking up the idea for their fairs. Thanks to the generosity of CVGS, $1,000 in wooden coins redeemable at any Colusa County Fair food vendor, are once again being handed out by fair “spies” around the county. If a person is seen or is overheard by a “Fair Spy” promoting the fair, they will receive a wooden coin. Participate in the 2011 Colusa County Fair and possibly receive a coin from a “Fair Spy.” Collecting the coins has become competition among some coffee groups and Meek said she anticipates that competition to spark again this year. She also reminds fair patrons that only the 2011 coins will be redeemable at the fair. “Previous years’ coins are no longer redeemable, but they are still great collectibles,” she said.

cook-off The Commodity Cook-off previously held during the Colusa Farm Show has moved to the Colusa County Fair. The popular competition, once featuring California-grown commodities of rice and nuts, has expanded to include tomatoes and beef and is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, June 10. The cook-off will be one of the attractions scheduled on the new Premier Mushrooms L.P. Demonstration Stage in Festival Hall. “We are very excited to bring this event to the fair, and we are equally excited that our local Premier Mushrooms has generously sponsored the stage,” said Carolan Meek, fair c.e.o. The demonstration stage will also be the site of a variety of cooking demonstrations during the fair. On June 10, area cooks will take to the stage to compete in preparing dishes using Colusa County prime commodities of rice, nuts, tomatoes or beef.

Class premiums will be $25 for first, and ribbons for second and third place entries in each division. Best of division awards will be $50 and a ribbon and the Best of Show grand prize will be $250. Contestants may prepare a main dish, side dish, dessert or appetizer in one or all of the divisions. The contest is open to all ages. There is an entry fee of $10 per entry. Only California-grown commodities may be used. Rules and regulations for the competition are available by calling the Colusa County Fair office at (530)458-2641 or may be downloaded from the Colusa County Fair website at: colusacountyfair.com. Meek suggests that entries are made early. “We expect this to be a popular attraction at our fair,” she said. “We believe the addition of the demonstration stage in our Festival Hall will be a great addition to our fair venue.”

Freddie Prez is Back...

Guitar Hero &

Freddie Prez is back at the Colusa County Fair with his Karaoke and Guitar Hero Live attractions. “We are glad to have Freddie performing at the Colusa County Fair again this year,” said Fair CEO Carolan Meek. “He brings a lot of great entertainment and fun for our fair patrons.” Prez treats his Karaoke shows more like a “Gong Show,” looking for the most entertaining singers, not necessarily just the best singers. Fair patrons can expect an entertaining time when Prez brings singers up on his stage and uses strobe lights, smoke machines, snow machines, and even a high powered toilet paper blower (you heard that right) to enhance the show. The audience votes for the most entertaining singer, not necessarily the one with the best voice. Prez has been doing the Guitar Hero Live show since 2007 when it first became available.

“I jumped on this when it first came out because I knew it would appeal to teens and the college age group. Even people in their 30’s would love to compete in this non-violent video game,” said Prez. Guitar Hero utilizes the same special effects as karaoke to enhance the show, and contestants get to “show off” their playing skills up on stage, looking like a rock star. The game is projected on a 55 inch monitor for the audience to see. “If you’re an adult and don’t know what to think about this, ask a few teenagers what they think - then watch their eyes light up,” said Prez. There are more and more versions of Guitar Hero coming out, and Prez brings out the most popular games to be used in his show. The Guitar Hero and Karaoke Contest is sponsored by Pride Real Estate.

New this year at the Colusa County Fair is the Premier Mushrooms L.P. Demonstration Stage. The Stage, sponsored by Premier, and aptly named for them, is going to provide an ongoing venue of demonstrations throughout the Fair stated fair CEO Carolan Meek. The stage is prominently located in Festival Hall, and will host any number of demonstrations during the four-day run of the fair. Meek said there are still some demonstration time slots available, but that interested parties should call the fair office soon. “The slots are filling fast,” she said. “This year’s demonstrations are primarily food-related.” She added, “The beauty of the food related demonstrations is our stage sponsor.” “Anyone doing a demonstration recipe using mushrooms will be asked to use our locally grown Premier Mushrooms,” Meek said. “As an added plus, not only did Premier sponsor the entire event,

they will also donate mushrooms needed for the preparation of the dishes.” So far, confirmed demonstrations are from local restaurants Tommy’s Market Street Grill, and Louis Cairo’s. Several other area restaurants and individuals have been invited to participate as well. “Sylvia Davis will prepare polenta with goose, and we would love to have someone demonstrate solely cooking with mushrooms,” said Meek. The stage will also be used for other events. The Friendly Competition, which the fair introduced last year, will take place on the stage beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 9. The Commodity Cook-off, is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, June 10, and the Baked Foods for Men Only competition is at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 12. John Ashbaugh, of Premier Mushrooms L.P., commented that they are very happy to provide this sponsorship and to be a part of the Colusa County Fair.

Coming to the Fair

tuff Trucks and

mud bogs

The Colusa County Fair is bringing its Tuff Truck/Mud Drag Competition to the Grandstands Arena on Saturday night June 11th. The event is an open competition carrying a $3,000 purse, and is being sponsored by Les Schwab Tires. The Tuff Truck is an exciting off-road racing event with modified trucks (sometimes stock trucks for fun) going around a motocross-style course filled with different jumps, bumps and turns. Similar events held in indoor arenas are called Pro Arena Truck racing. Trucks are usually run one at a time, with the quickest time winning. Sometimes events feature trucks two at a time for added spectacle. Tuff Truck racing is usually seen at Monster Truck or Motorsports events. Tuff Trucks are usually pickup trucks that have been upgraded to resist the rigors of the arena unpaved track. Also at the Colusa event, promoters will feature the Mud Drags (also known as mud racing, and mud bogging.) It is an exciting (and messy) form of off-road motorsport that has become popular throughout

north American and is growing in popularity in other countries. The goal of a mud drag is to drive a vehicle through a pit of mud as far and as fast as you can. Winners are determined by how far a distance traveled through the pit and in the case that several vehicles are able to travel the entire length, the fastest time to get through the pit. Typically, mud drag vehicles are fourwheel drives including pickup trucks or sport utility modified with lifted suspensions and larger tires. Engine upgrade and supercharges are also common. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, large tractor tires became popular, and the drive lines required to run such tires led to some of the first purpose-built mud drag vehicles. Today, many sanctioning body’s give precedence to vehicles with modified, and lower, dragstertype “rail designs” because of their popularity with mud drag fans. Colusa County Fair CEO Carolan Meek said she expects this event to be a huge draw to the fair. To enter, visit www. colusacountyfair.com

Sponsor dinner

Sponsors and supporters of the Colusa County Fair were honored during the annual Colusa County Fair Manager’s Dinner on April 15. The event, hosted annually by the 44th District Agricultural Association, has traditionally been a venue for the Colusa County Fair to show its respect and appreciation to the many businesses, groups and individuals who continue to support the fair and its efforts in the community. This year’s dinner was especially meaningful in the face of tough economic times and state funding cutbacks the fair is likely to face in the coming year. Typically during the dinner, Fair Manager & CEO Carolan Meek, shares a slide show of all of the events from the previous year’s fair. This year, she opted to include many of the events the fairgrounds host year around, stating that it is important to remember that the Colusa County Fairgrounds is more than a once-a-year fair and the Colusa Farm Show. The 44th District Agricultural Association sponsors the Colusa Farm Show in February; Colusa Western Days in April, the Colusa County Fair in June, and Holiday Craft Faire in November. The Association’s facilities encompass numerous exhibit buildings, tree covered lawn area’s, livestock pavilions, grandstands and arena, ballparks, and large parking areas. All facilities are available for rent for private parties, public events, family gatherings, trade shows, single RV users and groups with some full hook-ups and clubhouses. Community events that benefit local firefighters, students, churches and civic groups are hosted on the grounds throughout the year. It is the site of any number of school activities as well. Additionally, in case of an emergency, the fairgrounds

would serve as a command post and shelter area. Once again this year, Central Valley Gas Storage (CVGS) a subsidiary of Nicor, reached out to the community by sponsoring the dinner. This is the third year that CVGS has sponsored the event. In introducing Jim Kiefer, project development for CVGS who attended the dinner, Meek said that she and the 44th DAA appreciated that Central Valley Gas Storage had so graciously sponsored the evening’s dinner. “We also appreciate their willingness to become a part of the community and especially that they have acknowledged early on the role that the Colusa County Fair plays in the county,” she said. She added that in addition to sponsoring the dinner for the third time, the company will also once again sponsor the annual Wooden Coin distribution event at the 2011 Colusa County Fair. Nicor is developing an underground gas storage field in Colusa County at a site south of Princeton. The proposed project is named Central Valley Gas Storage. Kiefer briefly addressed the dinner guests saying that he was happy to be a part of the Fair Dinner again this year, and he was also happy to report that preliminary construction has begun at the Princeton site. In addition to Kiefer, Meek also introduced the sponsors of the 2011 Fair’s newest venue; Premier Mushrooms L.P. Demonstration Stage. “We are happy to have John Ashbaugh and Chris Gonzales with us tonight,” she said. “Premier Mushrooms L.P Demonstration Stage in Festival Hall will provide an ongoing venue for demonstrations throughout the fair June 9 – 12,” she said. As is tradition, Meek also

presented a number of awards to individuals who have gone beyond the call of duty to assist with the Colusa County Fair. This year’s awards and recipients included the Friends of the 44th DAA Award to Doug Weston, Brian Weston and Kelly Lewis for their contribution of construction of the new Community Center on the fairgrounds. Clark and Mary Ornbaun and Devin Kelley were named Volunteers of the Year. This award is given to individuals who volunteer their time and energy to the 44th DAA. The Manager’s Award is the only award selected solely by the Fair Manager with input by the fair staff. This year, Meek chose two recipients. Matt Cousineau was selected for the continued giving of his time to all aspects of the fair. Meek also honored her husband Don Meek. “Many times throughout the fair, Don steps up and shares resources and time from our own company to keep us going,” she said. “It means a lot to me and I would like to publically thank him.” The Blue Ribbon Award is the highest and most prestigious

award given by the Western Fairs Association. It is given to recognize and honor individuals or groups who have provided outstanding support to the Fair Industry. “The Board of Directors of the 44th DAA are proud to announce the 2011 recipient is Julie LaGrande,” said Meek. The Fair Manager’s Appreciation Dinner is also a fund-raising opportunity for the Junior Fair Board. Each year, this group of young fair supporters hold a raffle of donated items during the dinner. Among the donated items to the raffle were commodity bags contributed by the 44th DAA, Colusa County Bounty Baskets contributed by the Colusa County Chamber of Commerce and three flats of portabella mushrooms donated by Premier Mushrooms L.P. “We are very appreciative of all of our supporters and our continuing loyal patrons,” Meek said. “Even during these tough economic times, we see time again that the community and our supporters continue to step up and help us to continue the good work we do here on the fairgrounds.”

Debbie Purdue Wins..

Poster Contest

Debbie Purdue of Arbuckle was selected as the winner in the annual Colusa County Fair poster contest. The design will be used as the official promotion material for the 2011 Colusa County Fair. Purdue’s rendition of what should portray the Fair’s theme - Blue Jeans and Country Dreams captured the wide spectrum of what it means to live in the country, wear your jeans and have your dreams. The poster depicts a pair of jeans with pertinent fair information tucked-in the pocket and on the label. It also reflects the peace and quiet of a country field and the focal point of the poster, the American Flag. Purdue, a self-taught graphic designer who describes herself as someone who likes to dabble in design work, said all of those things are what a county fair means to her. “It’s about America, about our

country,” she said. The poster she designed has many levels of detail. “That’s the kind of art I like,” Purdue said. “I like to look at a piece and see something, but when I look again, I see something else.” Purdue and her husband Jim also do photography. “We call ourselves Fourth Floor Studios, but we are what you would call semi-professionals,” she said. The couple work as a team on the photography assignments. Debbie Purdue used a little of her photographic skills in creating the fair poster. The blue jeans depicted at the base of the poster are actually a photograph she took of her husband’s blue jeans. The rest of the poster was created using various computer programs. This is the second year tha Purdue has entered the contest.
