kearns When Q Sacramento decided to put Daniel Kearns on the cover of our July edition we got a lots of “Who is he?” and “He looks familiar…” We guess is because security guards are one of those particular group of people who we see all the time at the bar, but we want to stay of our their way, specially after a few vodka-crans.

kearns Kearns, who just recently turned 22, is one of Lavender Heights newest and youngest guards having only been hired less than a year ago to protect Sacramento’s most precious block. “It’s fun, it’s like going out with your friends, yet its also like being the designated driver” jokes Kearns. Kearns, who, for the record, is as straight as they come, says that the reason he obtained the job was after a cousin told him about the position. Ever since Kearns admits to seeing some crazy and interesting things while on duty. “Recently there was a huge brawl of about ten people, after it was all said and done I had gotten paper strayed in my own eye” tells Kearns. “It hurts trust me, it’s not a pleasant experience. It last a few hours - you just got to keep washing your eye out” explains Kearns. Kearns adds that anytime a fight breaks he gets into guard mode “It’s hard to explain, it’s like a huge adrenaline rush and you keep your focus on trying to keep people safe” adds Kearns. Kearns states that his first priority is not to kick people out of the club but rather keep the people inside the venues safe. Kearns goes on to say that most of the arguments on any given night are usually by new people who aren’t used to the colorful and joyful crowd of the Lavender Heights neighborhood. With his charming looks and employment for gay venues Kearns was actually surprised when he realized that most of the flirting from patrons came from Drag Queens and not gay men. When asked what his most awkward moment has been so far he replied “it’s always awkward having to ask a friend or someone I know to leave the bar.” He says sometimes it’s the managers of the bars who step in and have to ask someone to leave. He admits that he doesn’t think he would ever want to work as security in a straight venue, because he feels the conflicts with patrons would be more often. “Believe it or not, gay bars are actually really quiet and safe compared to other places” added Kearns. And just in case our Q Sacramento readers ever get to meet Kearns in person while he’s on duty, we asked Kearns what are some of the key things he looks for in a drunk thats about to get the boot from the bar. “Signs of a sloppy drunk would be; leaning on your friends to properly walk, bobbing your head back and forth…and, of course, falling a sleep at the bar or crying, definitely crying!” says Kearns. Kearns, who is studying to become a physical therapist, says even though he loves his job as a security guard admits he would enjoy being behind the bar, recently adding barback to his resume. “I think being a bartender would be something interesting to do” said Kearns. He adds that his favorite drink would have to be a Black Superman. “But I love being security - my job is very exciting and keeps me on my toes every night” adds Kearns. While we certainly wish Kearns the best in all his future ventures we must admit, we hope he keeps the weekend shifts as our favorite security guard in the gayborhood. Because after all, who doesn’t wouldn’t want to be a little manhandled by a tall, blond, blue eye, all American guy like Daniel Kearns?

] s u o l u b a [unf social life By Luis Barrera

Albert Einstein once said “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new”. If that's the case, then I love to try new things. Some mistakes are created as a result of faults of others, lies or deceptions. Yet others, are designed by our very own decisions and our ability to take those around us for granted

I was a Junior in High School when I met him. My friends would describe him as tall, white, lean and dorky looking. To me, he was my very own "Mr. Big". He was older. Much older, but not troll old. Midtwenties at the time. He was a manager at a local boutique, had his very own place and a really nice ride. Now it seems like little things, but when you're that young, everything seems, well... big. We started going on dates and hanging out after school. It was such a long time ago but, I will never forget, our first kiss, parked in his car, in my parent's driveway. It's odd now to look back and think how this guy held off for a few dates before we even kissed. Who does that now-a-days? Soon after he asked my Mom's permission to date me. Such an old fashion thing to do. Needless to say my mom liked him more than I did. She approved and was happy that I had found someone so well put together, responsible and caring. I remember spending all day with him and coming home around eleven at night just to shower, sleep and get up at seven in the morning to do it all again. Until one day my mom walks into my room and says "You know, you should just stay the night at his place, I trust you both", I was in disbelief, yet I didn't question my mom and off I went. A night turned into weekends, that turned into weeks, that turned into a five year relationship. We had it all it seemed, what started out as a small craftsman two bed one bath, turned into a three bed, two bath with a dog and a cat and two sexy sports cars. We went through a lot, from the two year itch, to me moving away for college, to the normal, how can we make this more exciting. Through it all, mostly my selfishness, he was there for me, thick and thin.

They say that Leo's are the most loyal, loving and caring signs of the zodiac and boy were they right when it came to him. Yet, when we are that young, no matter what anyone tells you, you have this urge to be independent and a need to explore, and it's hard to do when your in a long term live-in relationship. While others were having all night parties and going to concerts. I was watching American idol re-runs and planning dinner parties. Five years, easy to say, yet long to live through. It was hard to keep the same spark we had after that first kiss on the driveway. One night after we had what would be considered one of our good days, he comes up to me and tells me "You know I think I'm falling in love with you again." At the time, I was kind of upset about it. I guess my initial thought was, when did you fall out of love? I now know what he meant by it. You can't always be in-love with the person you're with, especially after so many years. At some point you stop being lovers and you become partners, best friends and companions in life. I just didn't know that's what I had at the time. Needless to say, towards the end, I felt suffocated by all the nurturing. Everything had to be planned and there was not much spontaneous fun. I guess, we could of talked about it and try to fix things, but instead I chose to run away. And away I went to Southern California. I was there for about a week. When I came back I had signed a lease on my very own place and it took all of two days to pack up five years worth of things and memories and start my very own unfabulous life. Throughout the years and after many many unfabulous relationships, I began to understand more

and more where he was coming from and began to appreciate what I had with him. It's true what people say, you never know what you have until it's gone, and I knew what that meant. I guess, I just always thought it also meant that once we realize what we lost we could get it again. But we can't. I guess the right quote should be re-written to say "You never know what you have, until you can't have it ever again." Since I moved to Sacramento I have run into him a couple of times. And while I'm sure he's well over me, each time I see him, I can't help feel a bit sad, that someone that meant so much in my life for so many years, it's now just someone I used to know. Because of my Mr. Big I have my...

Unfabulous Rule for a More Fabulous Life #3

Live In The Moment

I spent so much time thinking about what I was missing out by being in a relationship, that I forgot to see the big things I had in my life. During the course of our relationship he would tell me that our timing was off. That if we would of met several years later, once I grew up more, we could of had a great relationship. Well, after almost six years later, I can honestly say, I have done some growing up, but there is nothing BIG insight. FM(U)L

If you never heard the name Xavier Toscano, you must not get out often. Toscano has performed in countless venues across California. Toscano has had a lifelong love of music. An all-around performer, he is an actor and dancer as well. In addition to his own music videos, he has also appeared as a featured and backup dancer for a number of other artists. As an actor, Xavier has recorded national commercials for Nextel, NASCAR, Sony Playstation, and others. In California, he has been featured in ads for Blue Shield, the California Public Utilities Commission, and others as well. Xavier has also been featured in independent films throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Xavier has been majorly influenced by MTV and the multicultural scene of the SF Bay Area, and his music reflects it. His music can be described as enthusiastic, energetic, dance-urban pop. He blends his love of disco, rap, rock, raggae and R&B music with his Latino background. His major music influences include: Madonna, Prince, Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Kylie Minogue, Timbaland, The Neptunes, and many more. Inspired to put his love of music into action, Xavier has released two full studio albums, several music videos,

and he continues to work with many different artists and collaborators in the San Francisco bay and beyond. Not content to just stand on the stage and sing, his shows combine his other talents as an actor and dancer to create an act with the flair of theatre and the flash of MTV, all tied together with his energetic pop sound. Xavier believes that pop music is the soundtrack to our lives. It has the power to carve events in our lives in stone. When you hear a pop song from your past, it has the power to take you back. It brings back memories long faded into sepia back with a colorful pop, allowing the past to be instantly relived. That is why Xavier loves music so much. And that is the power he hopes to infuse into his songs. His most recent single “To The Sky” is just the perfect mixture of pop-dance with a hint of electrics. The lyrics center about the infatuation that comes with being in love. Q Sacramento also recommends you listen to “Threw Me Away” and you might want to add “Mighty Real LFB POP Mix” to your workout mix.

in unwanted spaces. If you want to hang free, it’s sexier to just go commando. Low Rise Briefs/Bikini Style....The perfect option for any slender, in shape guy. This style does a great job flattering slender men while enhancing one’s ASSets. It avoids the baggy sloppy look of loose boxers and tighty whities, as well as prevents them skinny guys looking skinnier. In addition, most briefs, including low briefs will give you tush a lift, if you need it. Boxer Briefs/Trunks - The ultimate choice for style and comfort for athletic men to the “almost” in shape bear. They remain in place, fit nicely around one’s thighs and mold the body perfectly. If you are taller then 6 feet, the longer boxer brief is the better choice. For those shorter, like myself (5’9”) -the trunk is the better choice to avoid looking shorter, while keeping the aesthetics of the look. Underwear is arguably the most important part of your outfit and like every other fashion purchase, requires an attention to detail and knowing what works for you and what doesn’t. Most of the top designers produce underwear, including some companies that solely focus on men’s intimates. It is important to try a few brands, because some will fit better around the waist, while others around the thighs. Prices vary from $12 - $250, but you can get a solid fashionable pair for no more than $30. Always Remember: What you put into your underwear is what you get out of it.

Q

Imagine an evening of fun that ends in the bedroom with that special someone you’ve been wanting for sometime. As you start to undress, you slowly watch them disrobe, imagining the secrets that hide under that layer of clothes. As your mouth begins to water with utter anticipation, you get a glimpse and can’t believe your eyes - This idiot has on Tightie Whities. As your passion immediately softens, you stand in shock, thinking “This sucks!,” Maybe this story is a little extreme and you probably would’ve finished the mission at hand, but it brings up an important subject - underwear. Fashion is becoming more of an important factor in men’s lives, this includes fashionable underwear. Men now have several options; loose boxers, boxer briefs (including trunks,) low rise briefs (bikini style) and for those with a wild streak or the occasional GO GO Boy; jock straps, jock briefs and the all to famous thong. The biggest question for most is “which style works beat for my body type.” We won’t include jock straps (great option at accentuating ones package,), jock briefs (great for lifting up your butt for a nice pair of fitted jeans,) or thongs in this piece. Lets Start with Loose Boxers.....Unless your sperm count is of concern, stay away from these, specially in plaid. There is nothing sexy about them, they offer zero support, and have a tendency to ride up
