Hello! It’s June!! You know what that means? No not Pride, my birthday month! Well this June I turned 29 years old. I used to say “one day when I’m really old, like, 29..” well I’m 29 so I guess I should start saying another number. In all seriousness I’m so exited to be 29 I feel all the experiences ups and downs we have in our 20’s are to get us ready for our 30’s so I can’t wait to see what this last year has in stores for me. In the present, we have such a great edition this month. We counted down the best prides around the world, and we even did the math for you just in case you wanted to travel world wide and be at every pride this summer! We are also going to be launching a new interactive platform later this month. So if you are reading this edition online, check back later in the month and test drive our new interactive version of the magazine it’s going to be pretty freaking awesome. Have a safe, gay month! editor in chief

You just hit a $300 million dollar lottery jackpot and planning out everything to do with your new found wealth . To satisfy that curiosity about how the “Other Gays” live, how about a “Tour De Gay”. No, it’s not some crazy cross country bike race nor is it a history tour through the Castro. It’s a 75 day jet setting luxury tour to some of the most exotic Gay prides one could imagine. Since this trip would be a dream for any LGBT member, regardless of age, we reached to the one person that could deliver up this unforgettable trip, Teri of Dream Catcher Vacations. The only restrictions that we gave Teri, being that this is Sacramento, is that the trip starts at Sacramento Pride and ends at Rainbow Festival. Check out this Journey:

Maggy Krell Aims To Shake Up DA’s Office By Neil Pople
22 courtesy photo
After an unprecedented 5 terms as Sacramento County District Attorney, Republican Jan Scully is stepping down. Her hand-picked successor, fellow conservative Anne Marie Schubert, hopes to continue her soon-to-be former boss’s work. Deputy Attorney General Maggy Krell, Schubert’s top opponent for the job, sees the need for a new direction of strong leadership and new ideas for crime prevention. The scene is set for a high-stakes battle over the implementation of law in Sacramento. For many, this race has been a struggle from the start. Schubert, as it turns out, is gay. She’s also the sister to Frank Schubert, the architect of the gay discrimination bill Proposition 8 of 2008 infamy as well as with Maine’s anti-gay Prop 1 movement shortly therafter. Maggy Krell, as it turns out, is straight. She’s a staunch ally of the LGBT movement and has been involved in the gay community for years. Inevitably, LGBT issues are being injected into what is quickly becoming the hottest race in recent Sacramento history. Maggy Krell started her career in the CA Attorney General’s office after graduating from the UC Davis School of Law, but also served as a Deputy District Attorney in neighboring San Joaquin County. There she cut her teeth on numerous cases ranging from misdemeanors to domestic abuse. At the Attorney General’s office, Krell battled murderers, gang members and sex trafficking rings. Most recently, Krell was tasked with assisting state Attorney General Kamala Harris by becoming park of the California Mortgage Fraud Strike Force, where she helped keep thousands of families from foreclosure. Maggy’s investment in the LGBT community goes back over a decade, since her decision to become an early member of the Stonewall Democrats of Greater Sacramento. She also helped cofound the NorCal AIDS ride (where she was also one of the first riders in the event) in 2005. When sitting down with Maggy at her bustling campaign office in Land Park, I asked the challenger about how she’s reacted to having overwhelming support from the gay community while running against the only gay candidate in the race. “When I started to run I didn’t have to introduce myself to the gay community. They’ve already known me for years,” Krell told Q Magazine. “But this race isn’t about just the issues of LGBT citizens: this is about leadership for all.” Krell, taking time out of a busy Saturday morning of phone calls and greeting the steady stream of volunteers coming in to volunteer, has the temperament of someone ready to be District Attorney. Thoughtful in her approach and her answers (she wants to make sure the DA’s office prosecutes hate crimes to the fullest extent of the law, and has strong beliefs the DA’s office should be an educator about cyber-bullying, amongst other topics), Maggy has a long haul ahead of her. The horse race is between her and Schubert, and she’s aware this race will most likely continue until the November election. “This campaign is talking about fresh, innovative ideas. I reject antiquated processes, and simply doing what we’ve always done ‘because we’ve always done it’ just doesn’t cut it anymore,” Krell said between sips from her coffee cup. “We’re the only campaign in this race talking about a new direction.” Anne Marie Schubert, who did not respond to several attempts at contact for an interview, seems to believe
in the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality. Most of her positions are that of outgoing DA Jan Scully. Her views on crime aren’t as readily defined as Maggy’s, but there is plenty to learn about her character from her actions… or rather, inactions, from the 2008 Prop 8 debacle. During the contentious anti-gay marriage bill’s journey from the mind of Schubert’s brother to the ballot box, there were many opportunities for Schubert to speak up about how Prop 8 would affect the family she planned to have with her then-partner and two young children. When Frank Schubert was putting out TV ads claiming gay marriage would hurt children, Anne Marie Schubert kept silent and refused to speak up for her family and the families of tens of thousands of Californians. A spokesman for Schubert was quoted in the San Francisco Examiner as saying “She’s not a political activist in that (the LGBT) arena and never has been.” Beyond LGBT issues, Schubert has recently been under fire for her administrative role in the DA’s office during the recent recession. Records have revealed that 94 employees of the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office had been laid off. During that same time, Schubert was offered and accepted a pay raise from a base of $97k in 2003 to over $152k in 2012. Midtown Sacramento hairdresser Genevieve made note of the layoffs. “It’s disgusting to take money when your employees are getting laid off. I don’t think I could take a pay raise knowing that the people I worked with were going home without. It just sounds unethical.” Kevin, a go-go dancer and aspiring fashion designer, has rather surprisingly been watching the race from his home in Folsom. He’s remembered Schubert’s deafening silence in 2008. “I wish Ms. Schubert had said something in 2008, when voices of normal families in samesex partnerships were critical. I know so many friends who wanted to get married but couldn’t because not enough people stood up and said something against Prop 8.” Mooney, a Natomas resident and retail manager, said he was supporting Maggy Krell because “morality and integrity comes to mind. We need someone who stands up for what they believe and hopefully that someone believes in standing up for everybody. I like Maggy because she stands up for people.” It was hard to find a supporter for Schubert while asking people on the street in Downtown Sacramento, but I finally found someone who was voting for the Republican candidate. Tom, a retired investment analyst, said he was supporting Schubert because “I want a DA who isn’t going to let ‘bullying’ be the next catch word for kids to use to get back at the kids they don’t like. Schubert’s going to be tough on crime and that works for me.” The race this upcoming Tuesday, June 3rd, is undoubtedly going to see Krell and Schubert take the top two positions to carry on the campaign until November. Both candidates will be under the microscope, and the tough questions will dog them for the rest of the campaign season. It’s going to take a lot of hard work, but Krell seems ready to tackle the challenges with gusto. “I’d be honored to have your vote for Sacramento District Attorney. The DA’s office has a chance to change direction towards something better and I want to be there to help see people get on track for a better life. That’s what all of this is about.”
Alister Oliver discover By Pete Haynes
A walk around Alister Oliver’s gallery evokes lots of double-takes—a first look at a beautiful, richly colored image, followed by a second, longer gaze as one focuses in on something in the image that just doesn’t fit quite right. That, in a nutshell, is Alister’s style. “I like to pull people’s hair back,” he says. He credits his rebellious style to his ultraconservative upbringing. Most of his images tell a story, or leave the viewer to wonder: What’s up with the clown? Why is that leather-clad woman sitting alone in an empty, decaying room? Plans for future shoots include same-sex brides and grooms in body-painted attire, a drag queen fashion show and little people… Alister shoots both film and digital, but has an ongoing love affair with film, using only light on surfaces to create his effects. His series of 30” x 40 “ big prints, “A Gift To The God of Speed,” uses heavily made-up, somewhat hard-looking models, sporting eye-popping red lips and nails, draped seductively over classic cars. He’s a life-long car nut, thanks to his father’s 41-year career as a Jaguar engineer, yet his car prints aren’t the familiar commercial images; rather, he shoots close-ups of small angles and parts, the end result abstract yet naggingly familiar. In another series he uses slide film but processes it as standard film, yielding brilliant reds, yellows and oranges with a psychedelic edge. In another, he shoots at very slow film speed, the model’s minute movements creating an artistic blur. His latest experiment is printing photographs on metal. Alister has been making photographs since childhood, but it’s only since January 2009 that he has made photography his career. He is 100 percent self-taught. 26
“Some things would have happened differently if I had studied photography,” he says. “On the other hand, having not been schooled, I didn’t learn the rules. I would never have tried a lot of things because someone would have said, ‘You’re not supposed to do it that way; you’re not getting an A.’ I like what pops out because I broke the rules.” Alister teaches a class in black and white photography and processes his own black and white film in a darkroom provided to him by a local photo shop. “The reason I like film is, it absolutely teaches you to get it right the first time.” He recounts a painful lesson learned from an errant Starbucks coffee cup visible in an otherwise perfect image. Even though the ease of digital photography is popular with the upcoming generation, he says, film, particularly black and white film, will endure as an art medium. Before launching his photography business in January 2009, Alister made his living selling power tools and did a few art shows on the weekends. After an 8-month stint of unemployment, he decided to turn his photography into a business. He expected to get most of his business from weddings and shot scores of “practice” weddings in preparation. But he’s been surprised to find that the bulk of his business has been from customers desiring portraits with an artistic flair or unusual twist. “I love it when a customer comes in and says, ‘I need a piece of art that’s me, that is who I am, on my wall,’” he says. One such customer was a 53-year-old mother, who upon her last child’s leaving home promptly shaved her head, bought the wildest pair of glasses she could find and came in to have a series of portraits made. “She’s my inspiration,” Alister says.

the art of
John S. Huerta By Pete Haynes
If you've ever been on the block for Second Saturday or visited a Dia de Los Muertos event in Midtown, you definitely seen his work. He captures the essence of the Day of Dead in his art with an uncanny knack of combining fantasy and realism. His Passion in this art genre grew when he experienced the death of his sister in 1999 and his mother the following year. As a way to process his losses, he started looking at this realm of art more intently and began making his own compositions. I had an opportunity to sit down with artist John S. Huerta and drill him with a few questions. How long have you considered yourself an artist/when did you began doing art? "I first realize I was an artist when I was still in college in Phoenix. My professor admired my work and gave me so much confidence to continue with it, I decided to just go for it." What medium(s) do you use in your art? "My work is mostly in acrylic on canvas board, canvas, or cold press watercolor paper." What's been your primary motivation in you art, specifically your Day of the Dead art? "My biggest inspiration was my mother, Frida Kahlo. Also Diego Rivera and Georgia O'Keefe. I really got into the day of the dead art about 14 years ago. It was part of what I had to deal with in understanding death. Unfortunately, my sister passed away May 1999 and then my mother passed in Febuarary 2000. It was a very dark moment in my life at that time. I started looking into "Dia de Los Muertos" art and was intrigued, so I started to make up compositions of my own renditions of day of the dead." Do you have a favorite piece that you've done? "I considered all of my pieces of work my favorite, but one does stick out because it says so much. it's called "Pink Paper Rose". It's the only one I have painted in like it." Face & Body Painting are big on the "Dia de Los Muertos" scene. Do you do that as well? "There has only been one time I actually painted someone's face for Dia de Los Muertos. Quite a different surface.....I prefer canvas." Knowing how fun your partner is, Have you ever painted him? "Yes, I have painted his portrait for his birthday . It really shows off his cheekbones."
36
Make sure to look out for John's amazing work. You can always find him on 2nd Saturday, next to Azul's Mexican Food & Tequila Bar displaying his incredible art as well as any Dia de Los Muertos festivals in the region.

My Mostly Unfabulous Social Life Luis Barrera
42
In life there are often great loves and great romances that take our breath away. These unfabulous accounts are nonce of the above. They are what happens between a first kiss and what I hope to be a happily ever after. This is my mostly unfabulous life....
Albert Einstein once said “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new”. If that’s the case, then I love to try new things. Some mistakes are created as a result of faults of others, lies or deceptions. Yet others, are designed by our very own decisions and our ability to take those around us for granted. I was a Junior in High School when I met him. My friends would describe him as tall, white, lean and dorky looking. To me, he was my very own “Mr. Big”. He was older. Much older, but not troll old. Mid-twenties at the time. He was a manager at a local boutique, had his very own place and a really nice ride. Now it seems like little things, but when you’re that young, everything seems, well... big. We started going on dates and hanging out after school. It was such a long time ago but, I will never forget, our first kiss, parked in his car, in my parent’s driveway. It’s odd now to look back and think how this guy held off for a few dates before we even kissed. Who does that now-a-days? Soon after he asked my Mom’s permission to date me. Such an old fashion thing to do. Needless to say my mom liked him more than I did. She approved and was happy that I had found someone so well put together, responsible and caring. I remember spending all day with him and coming home around eleven at night just to shower, sleep and get up at seven in the morning to do it all again. Until one day my mom walks into my room and says “You know, you should just stay the night at his place, I trust you both”, I was in disbelief, yet I didn’t question my mom and off I went. A night turned into weekends, that turned into weeks, that turned into a five year relationship. We had it all it seemed, what started out as a small craftsman two bed one bath, turned into a three bed, two bath with a dog and a cat and two sexy sports cars. We went through a lot, from the two year itch, to me moving away for college, to the normal, how can we make this more exciting. Through it all, mostly my selfishness, he was there for me, thick and thin. They say that Leo’s are the most loyal, loving and caring signs of the zodiac and boy were they right when it came to him. Yet, when we are that young, no matter what anyone tells you, you have this urge to be independent and a need to explore, and it’s hard to do when your in a long term live-in relationship. While others were having all night parties and going to concerts. I was watching American idol re-runs and planning dinner parties. Five years, easy to say, yet long to live through. It was hard to keep the same spark we had after that first kiss on the driveway. One night after we had what would be considered one of our good days, he comes up to me and tells me “You know I think I’m falling in love with you again.” At the time, I was kind of upset about it. I guess my initial thought was, when did you fall out of love? I now know what he meant by it. You can’t always be in-love with the person you’re with, especially after so many years. At some point you stop being lovers and you become partners, best friends and companions in life. I just didn’t know that’s what I had at the time. Needless to say, towards the end, I felt suffocated by all the nurturing. Everything had to be planned and there was not much spontaneous fun. I guess, we could of talked about it and try to fix things, but instead I chose to run away. And away I went to Southern California. I was there for about a week. When I came back I had signed a lease on my very own place and it took all of two days to pack up five years worth of things and memories and start my very own unfabulous life. Throughout the years and after many many unfabulous relationships, I began to understand more and more where he was coming from and began to appreciate what I had with him. It’s true what people say, you never know what you have until it’s gone, and I knew what that meant. I guess, I just always thought it also meant that once we realize what we lost we could get it again. But we can’t. I guess the right quote should be re-written to say “You never know what you have, until you can’t have it ever again.” Since I moved to Sacramento I have run into him a couple of times. And while I’m sure he’s well over me, each time I see him, I can’t help feel a bit sad, that someone that meant so much in my life for so many years, it’s now just someone I used to know. Because of my Mr. Big I have my Unfabulous Rule for a More Fabulous Life #3 Live In The Moment I spent so much time thinking about what I was missing out by being in a relationship, that I forgot to see the big things I had in my life. During the course of our relationship he would tell me that our timing was off. That if we would of met several years later, once I grew up more, we could of had a great relationship. Well, after almost six years later, I can say, I have done some growing up.

short shorts By Pete Haynes
Showing some thigh seems to be the trend for men's shorts this year. From WWD magazine, Vanity Fair, GQ, to the Wall Street Journal, the trend for this Summer is "Short Shorts". We've seen shorts go from a 15 inch inseam(calf length) to as high as a 2 inch inseam(upper thigh) over the course of the last few years. Whether it's showing how in shape your legs are to making yourself look longer and taller, it's the way to go. If you're not ready to fully commit, brands are still producing a few longer options, but who wants to look like a clam digger. Here are a few options from 1 of the premiere swimwear/shorts brand Parke & Ronen.
