Hello to all, I hope you had a great and safe Halloween. I’ve never been too crazy about dressing up. Maybe because as a kid my mom didn’t really let me get dressed up and walk around the city at night asking for candy. So I was the kid passing out the candy and eating the left overs. A few pounds and several years later here I am. Yet, here comes my favorite holiday this month; Thanksgiving is what I believe the best of them all. You get to spend time with family around the table and you get to really enjoy all the great food. Christmas is good, yet with all the gift giving is all seems very commercial. Thanksgiving is really going back to basics; family time, food and no expectations. We have a new contributor to the magazine - Sara Conrado. I love to see young people getting involved and making a positive impact. Yet something that’s been missing is gentlemen submitting columns. So please guys, don’t let the ladies have all the pages and please submit your opinions to editor@unitednewsmagazine.com and see them here next month. Have a great Thanksgiving everyone and thank you all for being loyal readers and wonderful sponsors this year.

Ok, this is the second column I have written for this issue. The first one tended to be a lot of venting about a few things that were getting on my nerves. Veiled thoughts and finger pointing aren’t really in my nature, so I decided to rewrite the column. What concerns me more and more these days is our apparent lack of concern for one another. Before all the hate mail starts to arrive, I want to clarify what I mean by that statement. It isn’t that we don’t really care about the well being and safety of our friends, neighbors and associates; it is the underlying fear of failure that seems to be prodding some folks to look out only for their selves abandoning the notion of helping others. I start each day writing in my journal, reading my Bible and praying about the day ahead. Within each morning prayer I ask God to bring me someone to help that day. It never fails. It may be something as simple as being a sounding board sitting quietly and listening. In my business I get to know a lot of people, I learn about any number of programs and projects available. It’s because of this and because of my
daily request, that I have been able to connect people with the people and programs that will benefit them the most. I have been lucky in my business and in my life, but I don’t for a minute assume that I have accomplished it on my own. I always say opening my business was a total God thing, and I say that because I believe it. I also believe that any success I have had here is due to the support and encouragement I have received from some of my fellow business people and my community and family. That is why I have to say time and again how important it is to support one another. If it our goal to have only our own business succeed and the heck with everyone else I’m afraid we just won’t get very far. There is so much going on in our county right now, and if we can all work together to be a part of it I am sure we will all survive. Not only will we survive the economic pressures we face, but if along the way we build our character and our respect for the welling being of those around us we will not only survive we will excel. Just a thought………..

Truth be told I don’t think that Grant crossed my mind again… at least not until the next day when he called to ask me out again. He wanted to take me to a movie. Herbal Detox Wrap, perfect for the winter season.

The Herbal Wrap experience is something many love but is not for everyone. Those who would not be a good canidate for such treatments due to high risk of complications are those with high/low blood pressure, pregnant, diabetes or certain allergies. These types of wraps do NOT promise to help you lose weight and inches. They ARE however extremely effective in helping the body rid itself of toxins, poisons, and excess fluid and of course full body relaxation. Also a relief for sore, aching muscles and muscle tension, which may be causing pain. With all the varieties of treatments out their I can really only explain in depth the one I offer to my clients. What can you expect when you come in for a detox treatment? The treatment I offer is a 2 hour session. You will first drink a hot tea with a special blend of detoxifying herbs. As you drink the tea the aromasteam sauna will be heating with a detoxifying aroma. You will sit in the sauna, which is anywhere from 100 - 106 degrees Fahrenheit. As you “pre-heat” in the aromasteam for 10-15 min. i will be prepping the massage table. This detoxifying experience uses hot herbal infused sheets that soak in raw herbs at around 165 degrees for several hours. Why does the heat play such a large role in the detox? The purpose is
to raise the body core temperature and increase perspiration, which aids in the releasing of impurities from your system. The large number of herbs and herb combinations are appropriate for the herbal wrap. The combination produce these effects: diuretic - (inducing elimination through the kidneys) diaphoretic - (inducing elimination through the skin) febrifuge - (inducing a feverish state in the body) all together creating a purifying effect for the blood and skin. Common raw herbs used in a detox could consist of: allspice, calendula petal, clove stems, eucalyptus, ginger root, oatmeal and rosemary. Once your time is up in the aromasteam you will then be wrapped in a mummy-like fashion in the herb infused sheet, thermal insulating blanket, and wool blanket. This is where you will lay for twenty minutes. The last and final touch to the whole treatment, a one hour massage to complete the total cleansing and relaxation experience. So in a nutshell you have a run down of what will take place during a detox wrap session. If you have any further questions or would like to experience a detox session you can contact: Wendy @ Touch of Health (530) 933 - 3933 Bt Appointment Only and Gift Certificates are available

Five years ago I certainly hadn’t pictured this. I always assumed after graduating from college I would land gently in a far off world where prestigious law firms hired upon first glance and huge corporations opened their arms to new graduates with a warm embrace. I thought earning a bachelor’s degree would open the door to an entire universe of perfect job opportunities and financial abundance waiting to fall into my lap. But as I clutched my diploma and drifted dreamily towards this magical place of effortless employment I realized it existed only in my head. Growing up in a household where education is key there was always the understanding that after high school comes college and after college comes independence. But nobody ever really talks about how difficult it is to strike out on your own, even when you finally have that degree in your hand. Not to mention how devastating it is to be turned down time and time again after 16+ years of education devoted entirely unto finding a fulfilling and well paying job at the end of it all. Unfortunately the odds seem to be stacked against most Americans during tough economical times like these. It seems even worse for recent college grads like me. The unemployment rate is the highest it has been in 26 years and there are 7.2 million less jobs now than there were before the recession began two years ago. These facts make it difficult for many people to hold onto their jobs, let alone find new ones. There are 2.2 million Americans with bachelor’s degrees or higher that are currently unemployed. I, however, am one of the lucky unfortunate ones. I have something that many

discouraged college grads do not have; the open and loving embrace of parents willing to house a down trodden victim of the recession’s destructive path. Moving into my childhood bedroom is not what I had envisioned for myself and my B.A. in English, but here we are. And in a strange turn of events, it feels very right indeed. After countless rejections and more pity parties than you can imagine, I finally feel like I am in the right place and moving in the right direction. Sometimes all it takes is the determination to keep your chin up and maybe a chance encounter at a coffee shop. This recession is extremely difficult for us Americans, and an extreme blow to the egos of us post grads, but it’s nothing we can’t endure if we persist with our hopes highs and our seemingly irrational dreams intact.

Family Farms, Wells Fargo Bank, Nantucket Home Store, Dick Molin, Attorney, Denny Forland, Attorney, and Aaron Stewart, Attorney. “Our Co-Challengers and Sponsors make the Annie B’s Drive possible,” according to Valavanis. “These individuals and firms made contributions, all of which are distributed to the 194 participating organizations in four counties, through the grant pool. It is the incentive of the grant pool that mobilizes nonprofits to ask and their donors to give.” This is the third year for the Annie B’s Community Drive, with North Valley Community Foundation challenging our region with $500,000 in percentage grants (over five years) for local nonprofits.
Together we can insure the expansion and retention of the Colusa County businesses we already have while preparing for the economic turn-around in the future. Together we can support one another and our local governments (City Councils and County Supervisors) to see us through these times. We are able to provide Grant searches and assist with business development. For More Information Contact
