Colusa County Fair “Home of the big wheel”
everyone’s a star
welcome to the i 71 Colusa County Fair st
It is our pleasure to have you attend this year’s fair. We expect it to be better than ever! The Board of the 44th District Agricultural Association and I are pleased that you have chosen to make our Fair a part of your family entertainment. This year’s theme; “Everyone’s a Star” at the Colusa County Fair was chosen to remind our patrons, volunteers and exhibitors that you truly are the stars of our fair. Without you, our Fair would not continue. We invite you to attend the many attractions and special performances during the June 10-13 Fair. There is a little something for everyone including the traditional Miss Colusa County and Mini Miss Colusa County pageants, the music of Legend and the Jimmy Dunlap Band, and the Stardust Dancers. This year our grandstands are filled with Motorized Madness. There is Flat Track Motorcycle Racing, a Tuff Truck, Mud Bog, Quad Racing Competition, and the always popular Demolition Derby. There are exhibits, the Junior Livestock Auction, food galore, and many strolling entertainers. Like most County Fairs, the Colusa County Fair is the premier showcase event for our many talented exhibitors, our county’s youth and the overall bounty of our county. We hope that you enjoy your time at the Colusa County Fair.
Sincerely
Carolan Ferreria Meek Carolan Ferreria Meek, CEO Colusa County Fair

WILD ABOUT MONKEYS New at the Colusa County Fair this June 10-13 will be some pretty famous characters. The baboons featured in the attraction; Wild About Monkeys have appeared in motion pictures such as “Evan Almighty” among others. In fact when a movie producer needs a performing baboon, chances are they will call Kevin and Martina Keith the hosts of “Wild About Monkeys.’ Training baboons is a specialty of the Keith’s, and they say they believe baboons to be
by far the most socially intelligent primate. At the Colusa County Fair, patrons can expect to see a show that will draw them back again and again during the run of the fair. Kevin Keith produces live shows as well as continues a close working relationship within the film industry. The animal shows that he produces remain the highest rated in the nation. He has achieved this by holding true to his main ideal which is that live animal en-
tertainment must not only be entertaining, but meaningful and educational as well. Kevin Keith says he wants to enrich the audiences’ knowledge of the relationship and bond that exists between animal and man. Colusa County Fair CEO Carolan Meek said she is very pleased that the fair has the opportunity to bring such a fine act to its grounds this year. “I’m sure this attraction will be a great experience for everyone who sees it,” she said.
The circus at the fair Russell Bros. Family Circus Aims to Dazzle. The Russell Brothers Family Fun Circus and its performers are back at the Colusa County Fair this year. As promised, the circus performers will dazzle the young and old alike with juggling and trickery. Edward Russell, owner of the attraction, has been in the
circus business for more than 40 years and has performed at the San Bernardino Fair for 26 years - the last 14 years with his own company. Russell said that his business is very, very fun. “People really, really like the circus,” he said. Circus performances are free with fair admission.
PJ the Clown & Kid’s Town If you see her coming on her tri-cycle or in her polka dotted jeep, just stand back and wait for a fun-filled visit. PJ the Clown is well known at the Colusa County Fair. She visits with as many people as she can and rarely leaves anything less than a smile on their faces. “She’s great” said Colusa County Fair CEO Carolan Meek. “We love having PJ come back each year.” Along with the antics of PJ, the Fair also provides its 10 and under patrons with an area all their own.
A play area is designed for children 10 and under and everything there is FREE. Parents can sit and relax. Straw bales surround each activity, and canopies provide shade to offer a friendly setting and plenty of seating. Kid’s Town activities include drawing boards, hula hoops, building blocks, kid car play zone, sand box, musical instruments, bean bag toss, jump ropes, activity cube, bowling, puzzles and crafts. Kid’s Town is free with Fair admission.

Central Valley Gas Storage [CVGS] is returning this year as the 2010 Colusa County Fair Wooden Coin sponsor. Central Valley Gas Storage is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nicor Enerchange. Nicor is listed on the New York Stock Exchange with the symbol “GAS”. Central Valley Gas Storage is proposing an underground natural gas storage project near
Princeton. Project Development Director Jim Kiefer commented that it has been a pleasure getting to know and work with the people in the community and that he is especially happy to be a part of the Colusa County Fair. Earlier this spring CVGS, for the second year in a row, hosted the annual Fair Manager’s Dinner, and also agreed to return
for a second year as sponsors of the wooden coin project as well. A few years ago, Colusa County Fair CEO Carolan Meek devised a fair promotion using wooden coins. Its popularity and success in Colusa County earned it the title of Small Fairs Best Single Day Promotion from the Western Fairs Association, and resulted in a number of other county fairs picking up the idea for their fairs. Thanks to the generosity of CVGS, $1,000 in wooden coins redeemable at any Colusa County Fair food vender are once again being handed out by fair “spies” around the county. In Arbuckle, they can be found at the UMPQUA Bank and at the U.S. Post Office. In Williams, they are at the U.S. Post Office and at US Bank. In Maxwell, Stonyford and Princeton, the coins are at the U.S. Post Offices. Collecting the coins has become competition among some coffee groups and Meek said she anticipates that competition to spark again this year. She also reminds fair patrons that only the 2009 coins will be redeemable at the fair. “Previous years’ coins are no longer redeemable, but they are still great collectibles,” she said.

show. The audience votes for the most entertaining singer, not necessarily the one with the best voice. Prez has been doing the Guitar Hero Live show since 2007 when it first became available. “I jumped on this when it first came out because I knew it would appeal to teens and the college-aged group. Even people in their 30’s would love to compete in this non-violent video game,” said Prez. Guitar Hero utilizes the same
special effects as karaoke to enhance the show, and contestants get to “show off” their playing skills up on stage, looking like a rock star. The game is projected on a 55” TV for the audience to see. “If you’re an adult and don’t know what to think about this, ask a few teenagers what they think - then watch their eyes light up,” said Prez. There are more and more versions of Guitar Hero coming out, and Freddie brings out the most popular games to be used in his show.

Mechanic’s Auction & Junior Livestock Auction The Colusa County Fair will host the Junior Livestock Auction on Saturday, June 12, at the T.K. Marshall Arena. The Auctions are continually one of the biggest draws to the Colusa County Fair. Each year, hundreds of potential buyers and supporters of the county’s youth attend these events to show a tremendous
support for the young people who participate. The 2010 Ag Mechanic’s Auction is being sponsored by the Colusa County Farm Bureau and Wells Fargo Bank. Buyers’ registration and Junior Livestock Auction is sponsored by Umpqua Bank. The buyers’ luncheon is sponsored by ADM Rice. Local 4-H and Future Farmers of America [FFA] students
will auction off animals that they purchase, feed, raise, and show and market themselves. “This auction is way for the kids to gain occupational experience,” said Fair Manager Carolan Meek. Buyer’s registration begins at 8 a.m. and the Livestock Auction will begin at 9 a.m. with the Ag Mechanic’s Auction beginning at noon.
Vern Elmer of West Coast Landscapes donated materials and labor to create a beautiful new addition to Etchepare Hall on the Colusa County Fair Grounds. Fair patrons will be welcomed by the sight of wonderful new
cascading waterfall feature at the south entrance to the hall. Colusa County Fair CEO Carolan Meek said that this is permanent display which will enhance the beauty of this building year around.
“It isn’t just a gift to the Fair, but to the entire fairgrounds,” she said. “We are very appreciative of Vern and his generosity,” she said. “I hope everyone will take the time to visit the building during the fair,” she added.

Annual Destruction Derby
The stands are always packed with Destruction Derby fans on the final night of the Colusa County Fair. Fair CEO Carolan Meek said she doesn’t expect this year to be any different. Always a crowd-pleasing event, and one of the highlights of the Colusa County Fair, the Destruction Derby is slated for the final evening of this year’s Fair. The event will be on Sunday, June 13 at 7 p.m. in the Grandstand Arena. The purse for this derby is more than $5,000. There will be three heats for full size vehicles, and an additional consolation heat
for drivers not in the top five from the first three heats. An added bonus this year is the addition of a pick-up truck heat. Drivers pile into Colusa for this event. They come from not only Colusa County, but from surrounding areas. Meek said the Colusa County Fair Derby is one of the best. “We always get a great crowd and a lot of drivers,” she said. First place drivers in each of the three regular heats, which last five minutes, will receive $150 and a trophy. Second place in each heat will win $75 and
third place will receive $50. First place in the consolation heat earns $200 plus a trophy, with $150 going to second place and $100 awarded to third place. Fourth place will win $75, and the fifth place winner will take home $50. In the Main Event, first place will win $1,000 and a trophy. The second place driver will receive $600 and a trophy, with third place taking $350, fourth place winning $200, fifth taking $125 and sixth place receiving $100. The most aggressive driver in each heat will be awarded $100. Compact car drivers in the one chance heat will compete for three prizes. First place wins $600 and a trophy, third place wins $350, with fourth winning $200, fifth place $125 and sixth place winning $100. The winner of the Best Looking Car will win $100 and trophy. i Short Track Motorcycle Racing Just when it looked like the Colusa County Fair arena would be dark on Friday night June 11 at this year’s Colusa County Fair, a local organization joined forces with the fairgrounds to bring an exciting new event to the 2010 Colusa County Fair. The Community Foundation of Colusa County and the 44th DAA will co-sponsor a short track motorcycle race (or flat track racing). Pit gates will open at 3:30 pm, practice at 5 pm and racing begins at 7 pm. Proceeds from the event will benefit the 44th DAA and the Foundation which awards grants to Colusa County non-profit groups and organizations. Foundation board member Gary Brewen is serving as chair of the race project. Brewen had a brief stint in the 1960’s
and 1970’s when he was a professional short track competitor. Track racing involves between 4 to 8 competitors riding around an oval track in a counter-clockwise direction over a set amount of laps – usually 6 to 8 - with points or transfer positions being awarded on a sliding scale. These points are accumulated over a number of heats, with the winner being the individual who has scored the most overall. In the case of elimination heats, highest finishing positions transfer to the next racing event. The skill of flattrack racing lies in the overall ability of the rider to control his motorcycle when cornering and thus avoid losing places through deceleration. Brewen explained that the motorcycles used is this type of racing are stripped down street bikes. Modern short track bikes are typically modified motocrossers. “Most of the 70’s era’ trackers’ don’t have brakes,” he said. Riders wear a steel shoe
on his or her left foot. The shoe is used as a balance point when the rider ‘sets-up’ for the turn. Each heat in the Colusa County race will be 6-10 laps run on a 1/10 plus-mile flat oval track, and it takes about 3.5 minutes to complete a heat. The bikes are usually traveling at about 20-25 mph /18 second elapsed time per lap Brewen said he has had a lot of interest in the prospect of bringing this competition to Colusa County. In fact, there appears to be a revival of the sport nationwide. At a recent Arizona race, more than 8,000 die-hard fans of the sport filled the stands despite rumors of icy rain and persistent snow flurries. He said there is a limit of 42 riders being accepted into the race due to time considerations. “If riders are interested they should contact me at 530-476-0703 or call the fair office at 530-4582641,” he said. Applications are also available
online at colusacountyfair.com or at the fair office. There is a $30 entry fee prior to June 1, 2010 and $50 entry after that date. Pit crew passes (maximum of 2/ rider) are $10 each. No riders under 16 years of age will be allowed to enter. Riders 16 and 17 must have signed parental consent to race. The event will have a $10 general admission. Brewen, recalling his days as a racer said “this form of the sport is making a comeback”. Although the Colusa race is a non-sanctioned event, Brewen said there is a strong interest in the stadium small track events of the 60’s and 70’s now coming full circle and becoming popular again. Brewen added that volunteers are needed to work the day of the race. There will be a training day about a week prior to the event. “Anyone interested in becoming a part of this event should give me a call,” he said.

mud as far and as fast as you can. Winners are determined by how far a distance traveled through the pit and in the case that several vehicles are able to travel the entire length, the fastest time to get through the pit. Typically, mud drag vehicles are four-wheel drives including pickup trucks or sport utility modified with lifted suspensions and larger tires. Engine upgrade and super charges are also common. In the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, large tractor tires became popular, and the drive liens required to run such tires led to some of the first purposebuilt mud drag vehicles. Today, many sanctioning body’s gives precedence to vehicles with modified, and lower, dragstertype “rail designs” because of their popularity with mud drag fans. Sometimes events feature trucks two at a time for added spectacle. Tuff Truck racing is usually seen at Monster Truck or Motorsports events. Tuff Trucks are usually pickup trucks that have been upgraded to resist the rigors of the arena’s unpaved truck. The Colusa event will feature Tuff Truck Class Mud Drags (also known as mud racing, and mud bogging), side by side mud drag classes, and quad racing classes. It is an exciting (and messy) form of off-road motorsport that has become popular throughout North American and is growing in popularity in other countries. The quad racing events are open to riders age 7-10, 11-16 and 17 and over. The goal of a mud drag is to drive a vehicle through a pit of

Colusa of Supervisors proclaimed Agri-Business May as Watershed Awareness Month in Colusa County. If you are thinking, “What’s the big deal with watersheds?” then you need some watershed awareness! So, what is a watershed? In simple terms, a watershed is an area of land that drains precipitation into a particular river, lake or stream. For Colusa County Sheriff Deputy example, most of us in Colusa CounTeresa Torres will but putting ty live in the Colusa Basin Waterdown her gun and putting up her shed, which drains precipitation into dukes May 21, as she competes in the Sacramento River. Opt for environmentally friendly products. If you must use toxic substances, never pour them in a drain or dump them on the ground – they will eventually end up in our water supply. Look for hazardous-waste disposal sites, or drop these materials off at hazardous-waste collection events. 3. Reduce or eliminate the use of pesticides and fertilizers in your garden. Always check labels before applying chemicals in your garden, and do not over-apply. Look for organic or less toxic alternatives. Try using compost, organic fertilizers and organic pesticides. 4. Rethink your lawn. Plan the landscape around your house incorporating methods requiring less water and less chemicals: a. Convert some of your lawn area to native landscaping. Not only will this cut down on water, chemical use and labor, but it will also provide

habitat for birds and other animals. b. Plant grass species that require less water, less chemicals and less maintenance. c. When you mow, leave the grass clippings on the lawn for a natural fertilizer. 5. Plant water-wise and/or native plants in your landscape. There are many beautiful native plants available at nurseries these days. Once established, these plants require little to no water or maintenance, and they attract a variety of animals, pollinators and beneficial insects. 6. Make your own garden compost. Compost all of your yard waste and vegetable scraps. This will create a natural fertilizer for your gardens and reduce waste that goes into the landfill. Remember that your everyday actions have a direct impact on the health of your watershed. By making conscientious choices in your daily life, as listed above, you will be well on your way to becoming a good watershed steward and helping to protect our natural resources for generations to come.
