Last year, Diehl’s Lead Partner Mercyhurst University started a Tower Garden Lending Program for interested Erie County schools and organizations. Tower Gardens are vertical garden structures (pictured below) that utilize aeroponic technology to grow a variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs yearround. Two of Diehl’s teachers agreed to support a Tower Garden project at the school and provide their classes with this unique learning opportunity! Their classes learned about plant growing cycles and after several weeks, they were able to harvest the fruits (and vegetables!) of their labor by making fresh salads (pictured below). The students reported that they have never had vegetables that tasted so good!

In February, Diehl was contacted by Scholastic Books with a surprising and exciting offer. Scholastic had recently partnered with ABC Studios to help promote the new sitcom, “Abbott Elementary.” The show is a workplace comedy that follows a young and eager second grade teacher doing her best to support the students in her underfunded Philadelphia school. As part of the promotional campaign with Scholastic, ABC sponsored seven book fairs at Title I schools across the country –and Diehl Elementary was selected as one of those seven schools! On the day of the fair, each Diehl student got to take home two books of their choice, completely free of charge. Every teacher in the school also got to select ten free books for their classroom libraries. Books were also made available to students who were absent during the fair, so that everyone received books! The book fair was held in March during Read Across America month for a timely celebration!
