UNITED WAY OF ERIE COUNTY

2014 ANNUAL REPORT

MISSION

Together, improving lives and building a stronger community.

ADVANCING THE COMMON GOOD

We come from different places. We come to different conclusions. But underneath it all, we share a passion for reducing poverty in Erie County and improving the human condition. When we LIVE UNITED, we can create real, lasting change in the building blocks of life: the education, income and health of our neighborhoods, our families, even the person next to us.

Half of the local social service agencies in Erie County unite to form the Erie Social Service Federation. By 1919, the organization has 22 members and changes its name to the “Community Chest of Erie County.”

Edward Doll, president of the Community Chest, activates “fair share” giving at Lovell Manufacturing, encouraging workers to donate the equivalent of one hour’s pay each month.

Several war-related agencies joined the Community Chest during World War II, leading it to temporarily become known as the “Community and War Chest.”

100 YEARS YOUNG As United Way of Erie County enters its 100th year of serving the people of our region, it is appropriate to take a moment and look back at a rich history of giving, advocating, and volunteering. On the cover of this report you will see a collage of images used over the years to convey a message of caring and hope. Thanks to the money and time donated by you and tens of thousands of others before you, more than one million people in Erie County have been helped over the last 100 years through programs and services funded by United Way. While our name has changed over time, the one constant has been our dedication to helping the most people in the most effective way possible. One of United Way’s greatest strengths is that through payroll deduction, anyone can afford to make a small weekly gift that, when combined with the donations of others, turns into millions of dollars a year that are used to improve people’s lives right here in Erie County. Thanks to United Way we can all be philanthropists. Looking forward to our next century of service, we will build upon past successes to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. Our LIVE UNITED 2025 vision of helping 10,000 more families become self-sufficient is leading us to find even better ways to bring our community together to meet this objective, for it is only by working toward a common goal that we will succeed. THANK YOU for supporting us over the past 100 years. And on behalf of the over 100,000 local people that benefit from United Way-funded services each year, we want to express our appreciation for helping us improve lives and build a stronger community.

Bill Jackson President United Way

James E. Martin Board Chair Northwest Savings Bank

After several other name changes, the organization finally becomes known as “United Way of Erie County,” joining a nationwide movement to share a common brand.

United Way begins implementing a new priorities system to allocate funding based on the most pressing needs in the community each year.

United Way moves to a new building located at 420 West 6th Street, enhancing its ability to work as a convener to address the community’s biggest challenges.

With support from other local organizations, United Way makes strides launching new movements to reduce poverty (Erie Together), initiate free tax preparation (Erie FREE Taxes), increase local literacy rates (Imagination Library), and implement a long-term goal to help reduce the number of families struggling to meet their basic needs (LIVE UNITED 2025).

F A C E S ALEXIS

JAYASHREE

For the past two years, Alexis has participated in “Leaders In-training For Tomorrow,” (or LIFT) a United Way-funded program at Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania. She has blossomed into a confident and strong leader and has become someone who takes charge and steps up to help others.

Jayashree is a proud United Way donor who has been a Leadership Giver since 2010. She believes that providing a safe environment conducive to raising future generations is extremely important. “I really like the way that United Way has focused on reducing poverty in Erie County,” Jayashree says.

GAGE In 2014, Gage noticed a flyer about Project SAIL (Successful Apprenticeships and Investments in Learning) hanging up in his school and it caught his eye. As a 14-year-old who had never been around boats, learning about maritime studies was something brand new and exciting. ROBERT Robert joined the Boys & Girls club at the age of five and became an active member throughout his youth. He went on to receive a B.A. in Sociology from Edinboro University. Today, Robert is a full-time counselor. “I want to impact the lives of the youth in our community,” said Robert.

Without this program, many youth just like Gage would enter high school with no clear career path.

UNITED YULANDA

JIM

A behavioral interventionist in Erie County, Yulanda turned to The Sight Center of NWPA’s Blindness and Low Vision Rehabilitation program when the corrective eye prescription she needed was not fully covered by her health insurance. Yulanda’s sight is crucial, as she monitors behavior and uses a computer database to record day-to-day interactions with students.

Jim has dedicated decades of his life to volunteerism, having donated his time, talent and expertise in countless ways to improve Erie County. “I have had the privilege of serving on United Way’s board of directors and being a participant in having United Way become the lead organization in reducing poverty in Erie County,” said Jim.

Through the program, funded by United Way, Yulanda received assistance that allowed her to get the glasses she needed.

THE OHRN’S Susan and Jim Ohrn’s LIVING UNITED story dates back to 1979. After being informed that another natural birth was not an option, the Ohrn’s reached out to Family and Child Services, a United Way funded organization, for adoption assistance. DUSTIN Dustin was a young man who graduated from high school with the help of his Big Brother, Mark. Dustin was paired with Mark through Big Brothers/Big Sisters, a program funded by United Way. Mark was always there to push Dustin to succeed. Thanks to Mark’s encouragement, Dustin was accepted into college.

“We are blessed to have resources that can be shared with those in need. We are committed to follow that philosophy throughout our lifetimes, and we have no reservation in setting aside sufficient assets upon our deaths so that our charitable desires can be continued indefinitely. Most certainly, United Way of Erie County must be included in that strategy as an assurance that available resources will be prudently used to meet social needs as they change over the years.”

100 YEARS OF IMPROVING LIVES AND BUILDING A STRONGER COMMUNITY 1914

Thanks to the money and time donated by you and tens of thousands of others before you, more than one million people in Erie County have been helped over the last 100 years through programs and services funded by United Way. While our name has changed (more than a few times), the one constant has been our dedication to helping the most people in the most effective way possible.

1914-1919

Half of the local social service agencies in Erie County unite to form the Erie Social Service Federation. By 1919, the organization has 22 members and changes its name to the “Community Chest of Erie County.”

1928

Edward Doll, president of the Community Chest, activates “fair share” giving at Lovell Manufacturing, encouraging workers to donate the equivalent of one hour’s pay each month.

1942-1946

Several war-related agencies joined the Community Chest during World War II, leading it to temporairly become known as the “Community and War Chest.”

1974

After several other name changes, the organization finally becomes known as “United Way of Erie County,” joining a nationwide movement to share a common brand.

1982

United Way begins implementing a new priorities system to allocate funding based on the most pressing needs in the community each year.

2006

United Way moves to a new building located at 420 West 6th Street, enhancing its ability to work as a convener to address the community’s biggest challenges.

2009-2013

With support from other local organizations, United Way makes strides launching new movements to reduce poverty (Erie Together), initiate free tax preparation (Erie FREE Taxes), increase local literacy rates (Imagination Library), and implement a long-term goal to help reduce the number of families struggling to meet their basic needs (LIVE UNITED 2025).

2014

THANK YOU for supporting us. Your consistent giving, advocating and volunteering has positioned us for tremendous success as we enter our second century.
