In 1963, Seattle held a World’s Fair looking forward to “Century 21.” President Johnson declared a “War on Poverty.” And a dozen Skagit business leaders came together to create a positive force for change in Skagit County by founding United Good Neighbors. In the past 50 years generous donors contributed over $22.5 million to support services to children, families, and seniors.
energies on those areas that will lead to significant, lasting change. Our new Strategic Plan emphasizes three strategies to achieve change: our ability to CONVENE partners across the spectrum; developing a strong method to COMMUNICATE challenges and successes; and ensuring CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT by setting goals and measuring outcomes. This work doesn’t change who we are. United Way is a trusted partner of business, local governments and nonprofits. We are confident our work in the next half-century will serve all the people in our community. Thank you to all our supporters.

Youth United – Varsity in Volunteering
How does it impact the students? This is what Cassidy Bowers, a varsity volunteer at Sedro-Woolley High School shared:
Encouraging the spirit of volunteering in our youth is the primary goal for Youth United: Varsity in Volunteerism (ViV). A terrific side benefit is that our local businesses and nonprofits received over 3000 hours of free help from local teenagers. This is a WINWIN!
United Way contributes the stipend for talented coaches (faculty advisors) at Sedro-Woolley and Concrete high schools. We also partner with WorkSource and Public Health District 304 to provide workshops on resume writing, interviewing and work-place behavior and Volunteer 101.

“Two years ago I was quiet and shy. Nobody knew who I was – I don’t even think I knew who I was. All I knew was that I didn’t like being in the spotlight, and I enjoyed being alone. ViV gives me a level of confidence I never could have achieved before…. I’m not scared to have a voice, and I enjoy leading others.” ~ Cassidy Bowers The program starts at Burlington-Edison High School next year.
