Springfield, MO—When voters head to the polls in Springfield on April 2, several important issues will be on the ballot that deserve your consideration. Dr. Shurita Thomas-Tate is running for School Board and Abe McGull is running unopposed to represent Zone 2 in northeastern Springfield. Both the city’s ¼-cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax renewal and the Springfield Public Schools’ proposed bond issue are also on the ballot. Streets, sidewalks and stormwater The city’s ¼-cent capital improvements sales tax has a 30-year track record of projects

that have been “completed as promised.” Renewing the tax will continue that record by helping the city improve traffic flow, sidewalks and stormwater infrastructure in our community – all without a tax increase. The tax is estimated to generate about $11 million per year

• Much-needed stormwater improvements throughout the city • Traffic flow and safety improvements, such as street widening and intersection improvements including West Bypass and Kearney, Battlefield and Lone Pine, and National and Sunset • Sidewalk construction, including school sidewalks Visitors to the city will help fund these capital improvements because of the sales tax structure, and the tax will sunset in 20 years, allowing for both design and construction phases of a project to be completed in the same time period - improving cost-effectiveness and efficiency. And accountability will continue with regular quarterly monitoring by the Citizens’ Sales Tax Oversight Committee and prioritization of projects through public input. Overall, this sales tax remains a strong and effective way to pay for necessary projects around our city. The city has set up an informational website with specific information about projects the tax would fund if approved. An investment in schools The Chamber has also endorsed Proposition S, the Springfield school bond issue that would provide $168 million in funding for 39 much-needed building improvements throughout the school district, from secure building entrances to early

childhood education classroom expansions, and storm shelters. A 31-member local citizen task force developed a sustainable funding plan for improving school facilities. The proposal, called Proposition S, includes reconstruction of four schools and extensive renovations to three others, in addition to adding secure entrances to 31 existing school buildings. The state provides no direct funding for buildings and facilities, so local property taxes are the primary funding source for schools to make major capital improvements. This plan reflects the value we place on education and in our workforce development pipeline, and it’s a strong investment in the future of our community. School Board Seats Two board seats, currently filled by Dr. Alina Lehnert and Dr. Charles Taylor, will be up for election on the April 2, 2019 ballot. Dr. Shurita Thomas-Tate is running for one of those school board seats. She currently is employed at Missouri State University as an associate professor in the disarmament of Communication Sciences and Disorders. When asked why she is running for School Board and what she hopes to accomplish, Tate said, “I care about the children and families in this community. I have committed my time and energy to serving children and families in Springfield since moving here. I have met and worked with many families who find

themselves marginalized within the SPS district – for any number of reasons including their race/ ethnicity, socioeconomic status, disability/ability, etc. I recognize the need for representation on the school board for these families, and I intend to be a voice for them.” City Council Seat Abe McGull is running unopposed to represent Zone 2 in northeastern Springfield. McGull is retired from the U.S. Navy and was deployed to Iraq three times. He briefly worked as a TV news cameraman but has been a federal prosecutor

since 1999. In the ‘90s, McGull served on the city council of Pleasant Valley, a Kansas City suburb. He was the first African-American elected mayor of Pleasant Valley and told the News-Leader last month he was probably the first black mayor of any city in Clay County. McGull, a board member of Community Foundation of the Ozarks, said he doesn’t have a specific agenda for his campaign. “I’m going to listen to the constituents and, whatever experience I have in municipal government, I’ll use it to be an advocate of Zone 2,” he shared.

BusinessNews Consider Black-Owned Platform as a Social Media Alternative By Rob Hannley Black News.Com

Los Angeles, CA — The contemporaneous malfunctioning of three social media giants on March 13, 2019 left business & common users alike with deep concern about the risk of significant reliance on these “no-cost” platforms. The massive glitches came without warning or solution for over 18 hours leaving users with the inability to post, get messages and for many make money. More than ever, people are wondering if there are any alternatives to the platforms that permeate much of our daily routines. This is not the first time the world has seen a threat to social media usage as they knew it. In 2014, Facebook enacted its “real name policy” leaving users with the ultimatum of divulging their government identities or not using the platform. Did we really

have a choice? After all, who can compete with the Goliath of social media? CJC Live, a Black-owned “Uberlike” shared economy, believes their platform is the most viable alternative solution for users on other platforms. With a built-in anti “AdPocalypse” component that protects brand presence, ad revenue, and the risk of abrupt demonetization via platform failure or restriction; CJC Live just may be the ‘new kid on the block’ we have all been anxious to meet. CEO, Reginald Braziel says, “Our platform is not about growing a single enormous entity with total control as the social media platforms of the past created. CJC Live is more of a movement designed to bring people together from around the world and incentivize them to create their own unique content and tell their stories. CJC is an acronym for Control Just Changed referring

to it’s decentralized, open source architecture, and shared economy, a philosophy much like Uber, Airbnb and many others.” Braziel, went on to say, “People generate billions in revenue for major platforms via clicks and swipes; you have to ask… What about the people? Unless you fit the ‘blue-check bill’ is anyone paying the average person, who just so happens to be driving

the machine?… Control Just Changed!” CJC Live is a platform created for and by its users, content creators and advertisers. “It is in the early stages of realizing its vision but moving quickly, evangelizing its innovative, gameified, shared economy, video platform and disrupting the disrupters,” says Braziel.

Why People Delay Estate Planning By Sativa Bowman-Sloan Attorney at Law Unite Contributing Writer

Springfield, MO— As you go about your busy schedule, estate planning may not be your top priority. In the back of your mind you know it is important to start the conversation. Maybe you

think you have plenty of time for that later or you aren’t quite sure where you want to be financially, but you continue to put off seeking the advice of an attorney who is experienced in estate planning. The best time for estate planning is when you are healthy and can make decisions based on facts, not your emotions or time

constraints. For those of you who have had to deal with a parent or loved one’s estate that resulted in probate court, you certainly know the stress that it puts on the family. Whether you have had a lifetime to accumulate your assets and want to pass them on to your family, or you feel you are not

quite where you want to be financially, your assets still need to be protected. Sometimes people just don’t want to think about dying or becoming incapacitated. That is understandable, but life happens whether you want to think about it or not. It is important to get started!

Food Review: Upscale and Southside By Lyle Foster Unite Contributing Writer

Springfield, MO— This month as we sense the advent of spring I was wondering if we should go upscale or economical or take out or family casual. I often take this time try to think of places

where there is an option to sit out on a patio. Yes, I do like to sit outside when the temps are just right and feel the gentle breezes over my skin while my hair blows in the wind. Oh, well……the first part was true! I think we will branch out for this one and check out many

“Reverie.” If that is your thing it’s a beautiful space and you can see some wonderful vista views. Okay on to the food….well don’t see this as a negative…. it is a place for foodies so a lot of a-la-carte items and big shareable dishes. My advice is to approach the menu with an open mind and use it as an opportunity to explore some new dishes and food concepts. You might find something that you like. They use a concept of tasting menus which gives you the opportunity to try some small dishes and see what you think. The idea is that you go with a few friends and each orders a few dishes to share with one another. Menu choices recently included beef tartare, panazanella, scallop and duck breast for examples. Brunch offerings may seem to be a bit more traditional with bacon and sausage patties and eggs, biscuits and gravy. But there are also innovative dishes like trout toast and the progress hot brown. But it is fun to branch out and try new things and get exposed to the latest in food trends and this is that kind

of place. I am a fan and it is great to see the space filled again with a cool forward thinking restaurant concept. You will need to bring your debit card because the items are a bit more expensive. And if adult drinks are part of your eating experience Progress boasts a forward thinking cocktail drinking menu which will give you a chance to try some new cool beverages. I will definitely say to give them a try and maybe for the first time you may want to go for brunch. But from this column we wish them the best and hope they have wild success. 3 ½ forks…….
