In the heart of the American Midwest lies a story of cultural heritage and community resilience that bridges the gap between two communities.
Springfield connection to the countries’ oldest African American Rodeo
representative of many towns established by African Americans who migrated from the South to northern and western communities after slavery. The Boley Rodeo began in 1903,” remarks Henrietta Hicks.
Boley, Oklahoma is home to the nation’s oldest African American community-based rodeos in the country. It is a celebration of local citizens and visitors from around the world with a line-up of fun, family-friendly activities, and entertainment. “Our annual Rodeo celebrates the historical significance of Boley, an all-black town
At the helm of the annual Boley Rodeo and Bar BQ Festival is Henrietta Hicks, a local historian whose roots run deep. Yet, the story takes an unexpected turn as we shift our focus to Springfield, Missouri, where Tim Ferguson resides. While Springfield may seem worlds away from the dusty rodeo arenas of Boley, it is here that the threads of connection
between these two locations converge.
The land where the rodeo arena stands today was once owned by Henrietta Hicks, who owns a ranch next to the rodeo arena. She is a former judge and local historian, who also happens to be Tim Ferguson’s aunt. Tim was born in Brooklyn, New York where his father worked in a ship yard as a master underwater welder. Tim has nine siblings.
Tim Ferguson’s father, William “Bill” Ferguson, was raised in Boley, Oklahoma, and had a deep connection to the town. While Tim grew up in California, his childhood was filled with memories of his father returning to Boley frequently, drawn by his love for the town and its rodeo traditions. Growing up, Tim was
involved in the Boley Rodeo, lending a helping hand wherever needed. Bill Ferguson’s expertise with horses, passed down from his father, made the rodeo a natural gathering point for the family.
Ferguson recalls how his father always owned a nice car and fondly remembers the regular holiday trips they made to Boley. On each journey, his father would bring a family member from Texas or Oklahoma back to California. What made these trips remarkable was his father’s ability to ensure safe passage, thanks to special documents from a prominent judge. These documents were obtained through his work distilling moonshine, which his father would deliver to parties attended by influential community members. This ensured that if he was ever pulled over by law enforcement, he would not face any trouble.
Ferguson’s involvement today with the rodeo extends to booking Gospel singing groups for the weekend event, adding a different spiritual dimension to the festivities.
As the 121st Annual Boley Rodeo event approaches, the spirit of community and cultural pride burns brighter than ever. Through the dedication of individuals like Henrietta Hicks and the support of community members like Tim Ferguson, the legacy of Boley lives on, inspiring future generations to honor their past while embracing the promise of tomorrow.

Teen Entrepreneur Advocates for Young Professionals in SW Missouri

Who is Gen Z? What do they need to make sure their professional lives are fulfilling in the Ozarks? These questions drive Jonathan Bell, CEO and founder of Bells Marketing Consultants.
He aims to make southwest Missouri a place that Gen Z wants to live and work in.
His first real job was an opportunity to work for his cousin’s financial firm managing their social media. Through that, he found interest in algorithms and gained valuable knowledge in how social media ticks.
“The biggest challenge was my age and how young I started,” Bell said. “A lot of people didn’t take me seriously.”
As he tried to build his client base, he realized his experience in social media and being part of Gen Z is a huge strength: He knows what resonates, what’s trending and where Gen Z spends their time.
“My team works with companies who want to understand how to grab the attention of Gen Z,” Bell said. “We hire Gen Z consultants from area high schools and colleges. They come in for a study and analyze a product or service that companies are trying to understand if Gen Z is interested in as well. “
When helping a client with a campaign, the team thinks about how they can strategically reach the client’s goals, developing a thorough plan for each campaign.
“Our organization prides itself on treating our clients like we’re
“The biggest challenge was my age and how young I started,” Bell said. “A lot of people didn’t take me seriously.”
investing partners, and we want to make sure that they grow,” Bell said.
As a leader of this consulting agency, he is eager to expand his client base and continue growing his team with Gen Z and millennials in the region.
Keeping Gen Z Talent in Southwest Missouri
While the goal of Bells Marketing Consultants is to help businesses with their marketing, an underlying goal is to also keep Gen Z talent in southwestern Missouri.
“A lot of people that I talk to on a day-to-day basis, whether they’re in high school or college, they don’t want to stay in the southern region of Missouri,” Bell explained.
Bell’s conclusion is that there
aren’t very many professional opportunities for the Gen Z generation.
As Gen Z is about to enter the work force, it is important that the region has infrastructure to get Gen Z employed.
Hoping to mend that, Bell has recently hosted an event, Young Professionals vs. SWMO on April 12. This was an opportunity for Gen Z and young millennials to come together with employers to talk about their struggles and to close the gaps.
“The goal is to swap perspectives and understand how we can find common middle ground,” Bell explained.
Persistence is Important
Some might say as young and vibrant as he is, Bell is an old soul.
He grew up in a sort of transi-
tory state, moving back and forth between Chicago and Springfield for much of his elementary school life. Some of his desire to plant his roots in Springfield comes from moving so much.
Now, he gets regular requests to speak at local high schools where he shares his story and provides inspiration for students to create their own opportunities.
Through his story, students are introduced to non-traditional routes to success —not just high school diploma to college to 8 a.m.-5 p.m. job.
“Successful entrepreneurship is a real possibility, even in southwest Missouri,” Bell said. “There is a lot of potential in Springfield, and I want to be part of that growth that Springfield has to offer.”

Springfield’s Black History Summer Academy Empowers Youth and Celebrates Community
By Samuel Knox, UniteNews Staff Writer
For over two decades, Springfield’s Black History Summer Academy has been a beacon of education and empowerment, offering a week-long deep dive into African American studies. Held on the grounds of Drury University’s Lay Hall, located at 900 N Benton Ave, this annual event relies on the dedication of volunteers from Springfield Public Schools and members of the local community to bring its vision to life.
Gwen Marshall, the director of the Black History Summer Academy, emphasizes the importance of intertwining local, national, and international history throughout the program. “We aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of African American history by exploring topics such as the rich history of Silver Springs Park, the significance of Juneteenth, and the vibrant culture of Park Day,” Marshall explained.
As part of the academy’s curriculum, participants explore this historic site and engage with its legacy firsthand.
A highlight of the academy is the unveiling of a specially designed coloring book, showcasing local Black personalities who have made remarkable contributions to society. From educators to athletes, entrepreneurs to musicians, these figures inspire
and uplift the next generation of leaders.
With a focus on empowering youth and nurturing leadership qualities, the academy offers interactive classes tailored for both K-12 students and adults. These sessions delve into the profound impact of Black history within Springfield and beyond, fostering critical thinking and cultural awareness.
“As parents of diverse kids, you should stress to your children to be their best. Don’t let excuses or the color of your skin limit you. The history of this country is not great but we are all Americans,” he said. “We have to act like we belong.” said City Councilman, Abe McGull, one of the past speakers at the academy.
Every evening, the academy provides nightly meals, inviting families to come together and share in the journey of knowledge and growth. All are welcome to participate, as the academy endeavors to equip individuals with the tools needed to propel the entire community toward a brighter future.
The last evening of the event is capped off by the Ariya. The Ariya is a Rites of Passage Program where young ladies graduating from high school participate in the rites of passage; an Afro-centric presentation to society.
It is sponsored by the Bridge Builder, Drury University, Springfield Public Schools, Unite of
to
Southwest Missouri and many others. Its purpose is to provide character development and leadership training for young African-American Women and to encourage them to pursue college after high school graduation as well as to empower them to take ownership of their futures.
The participants in the Rites of Passage Ceremony are granted permission by their families and the community to transition to the next level of social and educational development. The Ariya, a Swahili word meaning
celebration, is the Black History Summer Academy’s culminating activity and public celebration where the participants and their escorts are presented to the community. All the young ladies must be high school seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5 (4.0 scale).
Springfield’s Black History Summer Academy stands as a testament to the power of education, unity, and collective action. By honoring the past, empowering the present, and inspiring the future, this cherished institution continues to be a catalyst for positive change within the Springfield community.
