Community News Ancestral Land of the Osage Written by: Whitney Mosley, Education Manager, History Museum on the Square For around 250 years, the Osage made the Ozarks their home. They were the most prevalent indigenous group in Missouri and made an important impact on the state’s history. The Osage people call themselves the Wazhazhe, meaning “people of the middle water.” Their ancestors are believed to have come from around the Ohio River Valley. About 1,500 years ago, they migrated west to the Mississippi River. Here they split, with one group traveling up the river and settling in the St. Louis area. Around the 1600s, the Osage moved further into Missouri, living along the Missouri and Osage Rivers. The Osage controlled much of the land in Missouri, northern Arkansas, and parts of Kansas and Oklahoma, from the 1600s-1800s. Between 1808 and 1872, the U.S. government forced the Osage to cede their lands and move to what is their current Osage Reservation in northern Oklahoma. There are around 21,000 members of the Osage Nation today. In the early-20th century, an oil boom on their Reservation allowed them to fund the preservation of their history, culture, and language. They have been self-governing since 1906 and have had their own constitution for the last thirteen years. “We are not relics,” an official statement released by the Nation in 2023 states. “The Osage Nation is thriving on our Reservation in Northeast Oklahoma - a people of strength, hope, and passion, honoring the stories of the past and building the world of the future.”

Prepare for a New Year and a more empowered you By Nicki Donnelson UniteNews Contributing Writer Building on your talents and getting better at your job is a way to improve your ultimate quality of life. You may increase your salary by improving your skills, showing leadership and gaining new credentials. Why not make it your New Year’s resolution to try new things and grow your professional toolbox in 2024? Offering quality professional development throughout the year is one of the ways that we help individual Missourians and improve the regional economy. We know that by providing these training opportunities, we invest in the community, strengthen the talent base and grow educated citizens who will live and pump their vitality and livelihood back in to Missouri.

Building businesses

Becoming your own boss may be part of your vision for the American dream: It is for many. To that end, we offer training to get aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners educated on the fundamentals of business. This includes a sound understanding of financial literacy, legal and regulatory issues, and the building blocks of strategic planning. With these in place, businesses are set up for success. Due to our Innovate SOMO program, we are offering this type of

training – Early-Stage Business Boot Camps – throughout the region at no cost to the participants. They consist of eight expert-led workshops to give you practical applications, case studies and takeaways that you can implement right now. All you have to do is sign up. Similarly, if you already own a small business that is expanding rapidly, we offer a program called Elevate. It was designed in recognition of the fact that as you gain more employees and revenue, your responsibilities and challenges shift, and many early-stage workshops don’t fully prepare you for this change. Elevate provides custom tailored counseling and a network of peers to help you explore opportunities and best practices.

Growing your talents

Page 6 Building Empowering Connections | Unite News

Maybe becoming your own boss doesn’t interest you or perhaps it just isn’t the right time. Growth opportunities are still available to elevate your career success in your current organization and build your confidence. One of our most frequently requested courses we offer is Essentials of Effective Supervision. It is a deep dive, 12-week course designed to help new supervisors, and those aspiring to become supervisors, with a unique blend of knowledge, skills and strategies in the areas needed to effectively and efficiently supervise others. Beyond the topic being incredibly relevant, the instructors stand above many of our competitors due to their deep experience in the field. We also have access to a plethora of other career training through Mis-

souri State University’s collaboration with CareerStep. Due to this partnership, you can explore job skills and certifications in many fields related to healthcare and information technology. These options are available online at your convenience, and they can change your trajectory.

Space for you

In addition to talent development and business support services, we hope you’ll explore efactory as a potential home away from your home office. It’s not a one-size-fits-all situation here. Multiple options exist depending on how much space you need, how often you would like to office here and what resources you’d like to access. Imagine 2024 being the year where you take the reigns of your professional life, and then do it.

Use AI (Artificial Intelligence) as a Robotic Arm by Heather Noggle, UniteNews Contributing Writer

Chat GPT’s been dominating the news for almost a year. AI this, AI that. Just what even IS AI? AI stands for artificial intelligence, and computer gurus have been searching for it to be implemented since I was in junior high school eating Peanut M&Ms in the Meyer Library and peering through books on the topic. We’re finally – kinda – there. We’re not yet at the Kitt of Knight Rider level – from the same era – but we’re on our way. Generative AI is mostly what we’re playing with. “Make some text for me,

ChatGPT.” “How about an image, DALL-E 3, based on a prompt I provide of what I want?” (DALL-E 3 is a free plugin that you can use with ChatGPT you pay for). $20 a month. ChatGPT’s addition of DALL-E 3 pushed me into “okay, I’ll pay for that; sign me up.” So for the last month, DALL-E 3 and I have created a lot of cat art and sworly art. For someone who can’t draw a straight stick figure, this is fascinating. ChatGPT stands for Chat + Generative Pre-Trained Transformers. It’s really good at predicting the next word, and with that capability, it can write paragraphs in front of you as you read

and watch. You can even ask it to help you prompt it so that you get the output that you’re seeking. What all can it do? Categorize things you provide to it by determining what groups of information have in common. It can also make recipes from your pantry staples. But. Please be careful with what data you give it. Keep people’s identifying information out of ChatGPT and other programs like it – Google’s Bard and Claude. Here’s a list of things to consider when using Generative AI – ChatGPT or one of the others. • Don’t provide it private data. It can use your private data to train its models and even, sometimes, serve that private data up within search engine results. Also, OpenAI – ChatGPT’s parent company, experienced a data breach in March of 2023, so data in some accounts was taken, though they believe that was only payment data. (Only)

• Double check all results AI gives you. It sometimes is overly creative and lies or embellishes. • Use Google or another search engine for searching. Use AI to make something you already work faster. Brainstorm ideas, or ask it for suggestions of related ideas when you provide it a list. Also, be on the lookout for Microsoft Copilot to become more widely available. It just launched for large companies and will be integrated into Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. You can include your data there, segregated from the general Internet and not used to train the artificial intelligence model. Want a preview of Microsoft’s program? You can visit Bing Chat Enterprise in the Microsoft Edge browser. That’s currently in preview mode at bing.com/chat. Explore, but keep your data secure. AI is best used as a robotic arm – to make something faster - not a replacement for human thinking.

New Channel Commemorates the American Black Cowboy “Through these YouTube Shorts, we aspire to create a platform that not only educates but fosters a deeper appreciation for the resilience, skills, and legacy of the American Black cowboy,” - Samuel Knox.

Springfield, MO—In an endeavor to celebrate and honor the often-overlooked history of American Black Cowboys, a new YouTube Shorts channel has been launched by UniteNews. This platform aims to highlight their invaluable contributions, resilience, and rich legacy within the realm of Western culture. The channel, titled “Tales of the American Black Cowboy” seeks to educate, entertain, and enlighten viewers about the profound impact and historical significance of Black cowboys throughout the development of the American West. The initiative endeavors to shed light on their stories, struggles, triumphs, and their often underrepresented role in shaping the cowboy heritage. Recognizing the scarcity of mainstream representation, the aim is to bridge the gap by curating short one minute, engaging videos that will delve into various aspects of the American Black cowboy experience. “With the channel, we are embarking on a journey to amplify the stories of these often unheralded heroes and outlaws,” expressed Samuel Knox, founder of the channel. “Our goal is to ensure their history and cultural significance are not only preserved but celebrated and shared with a global audience.” “Tales of the American Black Cowboy,” invites everyone to join this cultural journey of exploration and discovery by liking, and subscribing to the channel, engaging with its content, and spreading awareness about this vital part of American history. Three new episodes will be added each week. For updates, follow us on Youtube. Search: Tales of the American Black Cowboy
