But remember technology does not take the place of more traditional methods and formats. 5. Provide plenty of cross-curricular reading activities: Offer historical fiction and interesting nonfiction books on history or geography topic your kids are currently studying. The reading materials will enhance and reinforce the subject matter, and the children won’t even be aware that the task is designed to help improve reading skills. Continued on page 7

The 1099 SideGig Generation

By Amber Donaldson Unite Contributing Writer

Think the 1099 generation is a hindrance to your overall business strategy? You can’t seem to find good employees who are invested in the company these days? Think again! This article highlights why you should be encouraging your employees to have a side gig, which might just improve the overall production at your own company. Think back to the days when you first founded your startup.

You most likely were in over your head with the amount of work to be done and didn’t realize how much hard work it would actually entail. You had to navigate through by the seat of your pants and hold on for the ride. You hoped that you would generate revenue but were bracing for those days when things didn’t go as planned. What made the difference for your business was the ability to adapt to changes and go with the flow. Putting in extra work every day until your question mark

are happier and many do it for self-fulfillment and never intend to leave their day job. A 1099 tax form is filled out when someone is self employed. They set their own hours and location. In doing so, this helps them work around their day job. If you’re looking to find out more about what a side gig entails, look no further than the education industry where side gigs have long been the status quo. After a teacher is done for the day, they might also be a coach, tutor, or leader of a club. These side hustles help supplement their income and also help them engage with their students on a different level. Minorities in Business recently held their October Business Development Workshop on the topic of side gigs and featured

five speakers that addressed various points of side gigs from how to start your own side gig, using social media management to market your business and figuring out taxes for 1099 employees. Connect with Minorities in Business for future events at: www.sgfmib.com.

Reading Skills

Continued from Page 4

6. Try audiobooks: Let the kids listen to an audiobook in the car (or at night before they go to sleep). Audiobooks can motivate a reluctant reader, appeal to auditory learners, and foster a real love of books in any child. Encourage them to follow the text with their eyes as they listen? This way, they will learn many new words. 7. Use learning games: Flashcards and other games are invaluable for learning individual words or word families, and you can play a variety of games with them, such as the Card Match Game or with younger children, use colorful picture flashcards to capture their imaginations and keep them engaged. 8. Go to the library: The library can open up a new world for your children! Not only can they choose books from a wide range of topics and genres, but the skills they develop in searching for books by subject area or alphabetically by author’s name will be helpful to them in the future. As your children get older, help

them discover new reading material. If they fall in love with fantasy, sci-fi, comedy, mysteries, or historical fiction, let them read to their heart’s

content. Most importantly help your child develop a real passion for reading because if they can read, they can learn to do “Anything”.
