Finding Forgiveness and Solutions from SC Domestic Terrorist Attack by Armstrong Williams Townhall.com Columnist Among the nine innocents murdered at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina on June 18 was Pastor Clementa Pinckney. Reverend Pinckney is my cousin, and our parents lived just across the field growing up in Marion, South Carolina. Our families have remained very close over the years. I knew them before I knew the world. We were all molded from the same clay. Pastor Pinckney was the real deal. He was always one of the bright ones. Springfield celebrated Juneteenth on June 20 at the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library. The event is the oldest confirmed celebration of the end of slavery. Springfield’s chapter of the NAACP and library staff worked together to bring the community together. Rain or shine, the event is held each year. If weather or
circumstances make an outdoor version impossible, the library is ready to open their doors and save the day. At 1:30, the crowd paused for a moment of silence to commemorate the nine Charleston victims. Their site told the crowd the time so everyone could observe it, along with the message that “we will celebrate the historical day of Juneteenth, but we will remember the latest continued on page 5

Teaching another generation that Black History is not just the history of African Americans but it is American History by Bon Tindle Unite Contributing Writer This June, Deliverance Temple Church hosted a weeklong Black History Summer Academy. This event was free to the public and the curriculum was arranged under the theme Rites of Passage: Bridging the Past with the Future. Run entirely by volunteers, the classes were educational as well as entertaining. By using the best material possible, heroes and people of character came alive in the classrooms. Role models and historic moments that changed the course of history were discussed along with displays of art and reminders of African culture from the past and present. The event had been held for years in the past, but put on hiatus for a short while. This was the first one since 2005, and plans for next year are underway. The classes focused on age
appropriate information on history, culture, geography, art and the many accomplishments and contributions of the African American population. From kindergarten through adult, the classes were arranged and taught by volunteers, some of whom shared teaching experience and resources. Deacon Dexter McCrimmons and former councilman Denny Wayne shared their time and helped make the event a success, along with many other volunteers who donated their time and knowledge. “It was a very positive, uplifting thing,” said volunteer Regina Rogers. “They came, then they came back and were even more excited as they learned more. It was really something to see that.” The classes were at capacity, and attendance was stellar. Groups were separated by age and gender, where they could speak frankly and talk about important people throughout history and

events that were relevant to them. This allowed discussion that the participants could relate to, and a safe place to bring up topics that matter today. Part of planning for next year was gathering information about this year’s event. Exit polls and surveys were done to help gauge reaction and find ways to improve. Though the overall comments and participation were extremely positive, volunteers
hope to find clues on how to do an even better job next time. When asked what her favorite part was about volunteering, Regina’s answer was simple. “To serve them and watch them enjoy the classes, just to be a part of that, it was amazing. I got to see them take that knowledge and be proud of it, and it was a joy, just a pure joy to see that happen.”

new and improved dinosaur to be even bigger and more frightening it does the trick for me. I hope you have deducted that the new dinosaur attraction goes haywire and somehow we have to get 20,000 tourists off of the island and leave something in place for the next sequel. This is where the fun starts as different species turn on each other and a few humans as well. The location of Jurassic World is supposed to be Costa Rica but the breathtaking landscape of Hawaii made the perfect location in the real world. The theme park footage was done at an abandoned Six Flags Park in New Orleans. It goes without saying that the scenery is spectacular. I am not going to say I would be a tourist to a dinosaur theme park but judging from the success of the film millions might be in real life if it were possible. I hope we leave the dinosaurs on film because films like this always teach the old idea not to mess with Mother Nature because you are going to get in trouble. Jurassic World is the fourth film in the installment and has become more than a blockbuster smashing records just like a big old angry dinosaur. Since we see two creatures marching off in the distance at the end of the film I wouldn’t be surprised if they have started writing the script for the next one. From a financial standpoint it is a no brainer! Summer is the blockbuster season and for a little fun it may be the perfect way to escape from the heat and humidity for a few hours. It worked for me. Enjoy! 94 out of 100

was the youngest person ever elected to serve in the House. In another unprecedented achievement, Pinckney was elected to the South Carolina Senate at age 27. In between raising a family and serving as pastor, Pinckney earned at least two masters degrees. At the age of 41 he was just beginning to fulfill all of the promise his hard work and dedication had earned him. But growing up back then in rural South Carolina we were just normal kids. Our lives were full of innocence, laughter, harmless mischief. Our community saw us as having potential from a young age. They said we were the hope for a brighter future. So when Rev. Pinkney and my brother Kent were elected to the state senate, this represented the fulfillment of that hope. Some of that hope died yesterday in that church. The survivors, including my brother Kent and I, know that Clementa’s absence puts more responsibility on our shoulders to continue the work he had begun. That will not be easy. Pinckney was always a bridge builder. Everywhere he went, he was a living example of his faith. His sermon and his testimony was how he lived his life. He was affable. He was just. He could be trusted. As a state senator along with my brother, where he served on the Senate Finance Committee, he was doggedly principled. Clementa left a legacy of achievement despite his humble origins. He did not allow the circumstances to define him. He changed the circumstances and made the world better. He was able to accomplish at age 41 what most people never do in a lifetime.
Our job as people of faith and those who are from the community of Charleston is to keep moving forward. We must grieve and we must heal. We cannot allow the evil that crept into Emanuel A.M.E. church to infect our own hearts. Even though vengeance may be a tempting thought amidst so much agonizing pain, it is best left for the Lord to right this wrong. What we can do is to continue to build. Our company, Howard Stirk Holdings, owns a television station in Charleston -- WGWG. We employ people in the community and provide positive, uplifting programming suitable for all ages. In a stirring speech before the South Carolina Senate earlier this year, Senator Pinckney talked about the murder of Walter Scott by a Charleston police officer. In calling for police body cameras, Pinckney cited the story of Thomas who was the only disciple absent when Jesus rose from the grave and visited his followers. Thomas could not believe that Jesus had risen from the dead, and walked through a locked door to visit with the disciples. But the next week Thomas was there and Jesus walked in. Thomas touched the nails on Jesus’ side. It was only when he was able to do that when he believed. To some people of faith evil is merely an abstraction, something we read about in the Bible but don’t really see in our daily lives. But evil does exist in this world, and it infects people with a spiritual sickness. It is one thing to see these things on television – whether it was the mass murders at a Colorado movie theatre, or the murder of children at an elementary school in Sandy Hook. It can sometimes seem like an ab-
straction. But when it hits so close to home, it forces us to confront the reality that evil does exist in this world. All of our humanity was robbed yesterday. No matter what the stated motives of the gunman, whenever you murder so many innocent people it is a hate crime. But it is not about the race of the victims or assailant. This was an act of hatred against humanity. And so no matter what the setting or what the origins of the victims, when events like this occur we are all affected. We cannot win against the onslaught of evil if we continue to be divided over things like race, class, gender and nationality. We cannot be so easily manipulated by the devil as to believe that there is a black humanity and a white humanity. If anything, this tragic event should be a warning to us all of the ultimate problem of teaching our children to hate another person based on their race. That goes for black and white parents, educators, law enforcement alike. Teaching inferiority is just as bad as teaching superiority. Either allows one to view someone else as less than human, and undeserving of being treated with human dignity. You cannot win a war against evil with a divisive strategy that destroys us from within. That is precisely what the devil wants. In the absence of courage, fear lurks and festers. Hatred is the opiate which emboldens the fearful to commit acts of true horror. These times call for courage. Let all of us come together and honor the courage and sacrifice of those brave and innocent souls who were called to God. Let us put on the armor of the Lord and sally forth as one nation, indivisible, upholding the banner of liberty and justice.

lives lost in the struggle for equality and peaceful coexistence in our nation.” This year brought a few new guests. The Springfield Art Museum led children in a few creative endeavors, and shared information about local artists and significant African American art. “It’s always rewarding to see what a diverse community we have,” said Cheryl Clay, president of Springfield’s NAACP chapter. “To see the crowd come together, and the children play and laugh together, it is a good time for our community.” Several services had booths and some community services were represented. There was a voter registration booth, and some information to remind people how important it is to be involved in local government. The library had its Bookmobile on site, and introduced young readers to new authors and books that are written by minorities or relate to the minority perspective. Another program gave books to children to stimulate
learning and the love of reading. Mayor Bob Stephens and a few representatives from the city council attended. The mayor gave a thoughtful speech that stressed the importance of community and participation. Councilwoman Phyllis Ferguson shared her appreciation for the event itself and the significance of what it represents. When asked about her favorite part of the event, Clay said it was definitely the children. “They were having so much fun when they came through. That was so much fun to see. They had a really great time and that was fun to watch.”

Intel sets aside $125 million to grow tech startups run by women and minorities By Seth Fiegerman Silicon Valley has come under fire in recent months for its lack of diversity. Now tech companies and investors are beginning to put in more money to fix it. Intel Capital, the investment arm of the technology corporation, announced that it will invest $125 million in startups run by women and underrepresented minorities in an effort to continue laying the groundwork for a more diverse workforce in the
technology industry. The announcement comes at a time when big and small technology companies are under greater scrutiny to prove they can innovate on their hiring practices as much as on their products. Diversity reports released in recent months by Microsoft, Facebook, Apple and others show an overwhelmingly white, male dominated workforce and leadership. A high-profile court case between Reddit's interim CEO Ellen Pao and the
renowned venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins only added to chatter about gender bias in the valley. "Our goal with this new fund is to meaningfully support a technology startup workforce more reflective of society, and ultimately to benefit Intel and the broader economy through its success," Brian Krzanich, Intel's CEO, said in a statement. The investment follows Intel's commitment in January to put $300 million toward workplace diversity efforts. Conference Has Black Beauty Supply Ownership Trending Up Atlanta, GA — Since 2010, Beauty Supply Institute has held a beauty supply store ownership conference annually that has resulted in over 70 new black-owned stores to hit the U.S., Canadian and Caribbean markets. The ethnic beauty supply business is a $15 billion business with approximately 13,000 retail outlets across America. According to Beauty Business magazine in 2012, the industry saw a 12% growth during the toughest recession years for retailers between 2007 and 2009. A study conducted by Alberto Culver showed, the beauty customer visits an OTC (over-the-counter) store on average, 22 times per year. These statistics are what contribute to the beauty retail business being such a strong sector. The business of beauty has produced wealth for some and conversation for others as exposed in Chris Rock’s, Good Hair movie and Jewish filmmaker, Aron Ranen’s The Korean Takeover: Black Hair, Korean Cash documentary. Beauty Supply Institute has
risen to become the #1 agency that puts store ownership in the hands of minorities through their academy, conferences, and classes. Its company founder, Professor Devin Robinson, is a seasoned store owner who opened his first store 10 years ago and 2 additional ones within 18 months of the first one opening. Since then he has written the book, Taking it Back: How to Become a Successful Black Beauty Supply Store Owner, appeared in Ebony magazine, the New York Times, News One with Roland Martin and many more outlets. When asked about his vision, he said, “My vision is to see more blacks in business ownership. lives lost in the struggle for equality and peaceful coexistence in our nation.” This year brought a few new guests.

When asked what her favorite part was about volunteering, Regina’s answer was simple. “To serve them and watch them enjoy the classes, just to be a part of that, it was amazing. new and improved dinosaur to be even bigger and more frightening it does the trick for me. It worked for me. was the youngest person ever elected to serve in the House.

Juneteenth Event Draws Diverse Crowd to Midtown Carnegie Library by Bon Tindle Unite Contributing Writer
Jazz Guitarist, Jin J.X
