Welcome. “Who’d have thought that when I returned a stage prop to Unity Theatre it would be the start of 32 years of an unpredictable roller-coaster of an adventure!

Dec & Jan. The Remarkable Tale Of

This is the last season I will programme but it is not a nostalgia trip. I have tried to make it representative of the diversity, innovation, ambition and quality of contemporary work that audiences have grown to expect over my time. There’s a healthy crop of commissions – so a tad of legacy - and affords a second opportunity to work with innovative producers FUEL. To all those, far too numerous to mention, who have been involved in the Unity story over the past three decades, a huge and unqualified thank you for your generosity in allowing me to play with my big toy. I hope you enjoyed, and continue to enjoy playing too!” Graeme Phillips Artistic Director

Lost Minutes

Graeme Phillips In 2014 Unity’s Artistic Director of 34 years, Graeme Phillips, annouced his retirement. Graeme trained at Central School of Speech and Drama before going on to work at Ipswich Arts Theatre, Dukes Theatre in Lancaster before arriving in Liverpool in 1982 to help to setup Lunchtime Theatre. It was while returning props to Unity Theatre that he found himself enter Unity and has not left since. He become Artistic Director in the early 1990s, presided over 2 redevelopments transforming a leaky-roofed old synagogue into a state-of-the-art small-scale theatre that is an asset to both the city and theatre. Core to his leadership has been his unerring support of new artists, including the acclaimed Told By An Idiot, Improbable and writers Jeff Young and Robert Farquhar.

behind the scenes. The amazing shows on our stage are just a small part of what we do. Our participation projects engage thousands of young people, we’ve an industry leading trainee programme, an acclaimed Youth Theatre and community gun crime projects. That’s just a few of the great things we do!

The Y Project

Trainee Technician Scheme Sophie Brown is Unity’s sixth trainee technician. She writes about her experience so far.

Inspired by the story of local man Eugene Ogungboro and his mother Paula, who, since the murder of her son in 2003, has been running workshops with young people who may be at risk of involvement in knife or gun related crime. We’re currently working with Sefton and Knowsley MBC’s to reduce youth violence.

Working with Primary Schools

It’s been almost six weeks since I started as the Trainee Technician and the amount I have learnt so far has been beyond any of my expectations. I first heard of the position when I was in my final year of University studying Applied Sports Psychology I already knew then that I wanted to pursue a completely different career path after graduation. I had worked at Unity before for Homotopia events and I’d been getting as much experience as possible, at the Royal Court Liverpool, Liverpool Empire, The Epstein, The Black-E and I had the pleasure of operating lights for a show at the Edinburgh Fringe festival. When I heard of this position I knew that I really wanted it, it was a perfect opportunity to learn about technical theatre and gain hands on experience within the field, meet new people and open the door to a career in the industry. The staff have been amazing, they are very friendly and hardworking there is also a sense of fun throughout the whole building. I have worked closely with Phil (Technical Manager) and Julie (Senior Technician) and they both are excellent teachers, very patient and explain things clearly to me.

We believe every child should have the opportunity to see high-quality theatre - for our annual Christmas show we keep our prices as low as possible and our particiption department delivers free resources for teachers and pupils!

In just six weeks I’ve learnt all the names of the lights (I’m quite proud of that!), how to rig lights, patch lighting and sound, cut and change gels, the basics of operating the lighting desk, time management for a get in/get out and health and safety. I’ve now run my first show (Jack and the Beanstalk), I really enjoyed the show and the experience of being in control of lighting with the guidance of Phil. The main thing I have learnt so far is to make sure that the finished product is of a very high standard to meet Unity but also the performers requirements by working as part of a close team. I’m very excited for what’s next!
