MODELING FOR NEURONAL AND COGNITIVE SYSTEMS (Mod4NeuCog)Â

Master of Science (MSc) MODELING FOR NEURONAL AND COGNITIVE SYSTEMS (Mod4NeuCog)

Objectives Graduates will have acquired the basic knowledge in mathematics, statistics, computer science, biology and cognitive science needed to model neurocognitive systems. The projects and internships will enable the students to identify and explore their domains of interest. Most of the projects of will be conducted in those laboratories of the Université Côte d’Azur that are members of the NeuroMod core program: http://univ-cotedazur.fr/en/idex/projet-structurant/cauca. The areas of specialization include medicine, mathematics, linguistics, physics, experimental economics, psychology, computer science, neurophysiology and the chemistry of olfaction. Throughout the program the students will be confronted with interactions in all these fields, often via group work. This will give each student the opportunity to progressively make individual choices, develop autonomous thinking and work in an interdisciplinary setting. The internships of the second year will, in addition, foster international mobility as well as R&D work in the private sector.

Through its innovative approaches to mentoring, MoNeuCog aims to foster natural curiosity and autonomy in students. The goal is to develop active researchers at the interface of applied mathematics and cognitive sciences.

Program The first semester is dedicated to the basics. It starts with 5 intensive weeks of bootcamp (update training in mathematics, programming and experimental set-ups). One of the goals of the update program is to establish an efficient and independent working method and to become acquainted with the environment of OpenNeuroLab, which is designed to promote group work. The first semester continues with coursework and projects in one of two tracks: “Cognitive Science” and “Applied Mathematics”. The second semester is marked by a transition to more independent work. It’s mostly comprised of mini-projects, conceived and supervised in collaboration with laboratories of the Université Côte d’Azur. These projects will be carried out in groups in the OpenNeuroLab and in laboratories. In addition, (groups of) students will carry out a selfdesigned project, for which a small budget will be available, with the management of the budget comprising a part of the challenge. The second year is centered around two internships, with at least one either abroad or in a private company.

Admission Candidates should have a bachelor’s or an equivalent degree in mathematics, computer science, biology, psychology, electrical engineering, economics or linguistics. In addition, they will have to provide evidence of their ability to follow mathematical courses at a rapid pace (preparatory classes, double degree, syllabi of previous mathematics courses and evidence of good grades in these courses, recommendation letters, etc.). As a part of the application the candidates are asked to provide a motivation letter explaining their interest in neuroscience and cognition and a short description of a project they would like to develop. The project proposal is required for evaluation purposes and will not necessarily lead to a project used in the course of study. The admission is selective, based on the students’ application materials.

Tuition fees: 4000€* *The tuition fees may be reduced for EU citizens, depending on their circumstances. In addition, financial aid (need or merit based scholarships, or student employment) may be available.
