Outdoor Infrastructure Solutions At Stoddart, we understand that designing great urban spaces like Tamarama Beach in Sydney is about more than seats and tables. It’s about street and park furniture that is DDA compliant, that complements its environment and provides solutions that are effective and attractive. It’s this philosophy that councils, governments and private customers trust Stoddart and Town&Park when in need of aesthetically designed BBQs, high quality shelters, picnic settings, sitting benches, bins, picnic tables and water fountains. Stoddart has the knowledge and experience to transform any urban space - whether it’s a park, road-side, playground, street scape or a major infrastructure project. Innovation is all about change, and understanding that solutions can only come from the ability to recognise that nothing is impossible.

If you can dream it, we can help you create it!

HIGH PL AY VALUE The secret to Richter’s success is a winning combination of a well-founded understanding of children’s need to play and a respectful use of wood as a key material. Richter play equipment is manufactured by skilled craftsman piece by piece, which results in play equipment that is superior to industrial products both in its uniqueness — each piece of equipment is an original – as well as in the quality of the work itself. A carefully planned, age-appropriate playground design can make an important contribution to improving the living conditions of children. Playgrounds are an essential alternative for children as their lives become more and more governed by technology. In order to fulfill this objective, the playground should have a high play value, which is defined by the relationship between the space, the play equipment and the user, and must be kept in mind throughout the planning process.

DOCKLANDS ADVENTURES A continually developing industrial site sports a nature-based playscape that transforms the area and adds high-value community amenity ocated in the evolving Docklands area of Melbourne, Ron Barassi Senior Park is a community recreation and sports facility with much to offer the local community and visiting public. Featuring a community pavilion, picnic area, sports field and walking circuit, this public greenspace is a welcome addition to the waterfront precinct in the City of Melbourne municipality. Situated on 200 hectares of land on Victoria Harbour, Docklands, which began its renaissance in 2007, is a booming public district close to transport networks. It provides an extensive array of residential, commercial, retail, entertainment, sports, art and culture offerings that make it an important destination location for

L

many. Open space venues, greenspace allocations and playgrounds provide ample opportunity for community engagement and visitor interaction. It’s estimated that by around 2031 Docklands will be a residential area for over 22,000 people, will attract 20 million visitors each year, and be a workplace for 50,000 people. A favourite of the area is the large highvalue playspace settled under the Bolte Bridge, which features bespoke Richter Spielgeräte play equipment installed by Marcus Constructions. Voted one of Melbourne’s top playgrounds, Ron Barassi Senior Park is a standout playscape featuring distinctive, sustainable, naturebased equipment with a natural timber pyramid tower at its centre. Two enclosed

stainless-steel slides erupt from the middle of the tower, marking dual escape routes down to the ground. Surrounding the pyramid play structure, a huge sandpit with diggers and scoops, a water channel with water pumps formed by timber logs, a ride-on excavator, rope bridges, a giant tyre swing and more offer hours of challenging fun for kids of all ages. Encompassed by a landscape of native greenlife, natural stone and bluestone pavers, the sturdy play equipment installed in this play oasis is the work of Marcus Constructions. Having spent years installing Richter Spielgeräte play equipment in playgrounds across the country, Marcus Constructions now operates as the exclusive agent of this quality brand in Australia.

unique Richter Spielgeräte play structures, like the Ron Barassi Senior Park playspace. Ideally suited to the Australian environment, the equipment used to develop this playscape has been engineered to handle the vagaries of exposure to the elements and remain safe for use for many years — the benefit of using natural, sustainable resources. Embracing the character that forms over time when using organic materials such as timber, Richter Spielgeräte is able to create distinctive play pieces that make a playground something memorable. Ensuring the play equipment in this park was safe for littlies to slide, swing and climb on was the highly skilled team from Marcus Constructions. Working alongside contractors, architects, project managers and landscapers, Marcus Constructions expertly installed the full array of Richter play structures. The first accredited Richter Spielgeräte assembly partner in Australia, and now the exclusive agent, Marcus Constructions had all the necessary qualifications to ensure the Ron Barassi Senior Park playspace would safely serve the Docklands area for generations to come.

Marcus Constructions believes high play-value, quality playscapes are fundamental to cognitive learning and creativity, and unite generations via the unforgettable moments they create. With an ethos aligned with the Richter Spielgeräte philosophy of “as much play value as possible, as much safety

as necessary”, the partnership between Richter and Marcus Constructions was a natural fit. The increased demand for architects and councils to construct safe playspaces using sustainable and lasting materials, has guided Marcus Constructions in the development of playscapes featuring

FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the 22nd edition of Outdoor Design Source (ODS). As I sit writing this (from home), the world is in the midst of a global pandemic. We are on the precipice of change on a worldwide scale that will usher in a new era of operation for us all, but one of the things that remains consistently front of mind is our built environment. At no other time in history has it been more obvious to so many how important our cities are when it comes to liveability. Throughout the past year the ODS team have been privy to a front row seat on all the action taking place around the globe, as city centres, residential estates, parks, playgrounds and recreation areas spring up and spread out across urban and suburban environments. From solar street furniture and smart poles to green infrastructure innovations and increased accessibility facilities — even somewhat avant garde bus shelters — we’ve seen it all. With each new concept, plan and project commencement is the acknowledgement that the people-centred approach increasingly undertaken by architects, designers and developers in the past decade, is here to stay. It seems that the momentum started toward increased liveability and greater greenspace for urban inhabitants is a ‘trend’ we’re not letting go of any time soon — despite our current challenges. Plans to turn a disused power station in Perth into a thriving new public space and a $2 billion mixed-use development for Southbank in Melbourne are just some of the schemes on the slate for Australia’s future. A hydro-electricity scheme expansion in Sydney, along with improvements in Pyrmont that will upgrade amenity for locals and increase tourism, turning it into an “economic powerhouse” for the City of Sydney, join the ranks of things to come. In Queensland, the Cross River Rail project alongside the Queen’s Wharf upgrade are but two of the exciting developments we’ll be seeing in Brisbane in the coming years. And these are just a small handful of examples of what’s ahead. Despite the challenging circumstances under which I write this year’s Editor’s Letter, I’m witnessing a reassuring continuation of productivity from our building and construction industry, a surge of creativity and innovation in design, and a nimble scrambling of adaptability as the landscaping and external works sector soldiers on. In the past few months we’ve been reminded just how vital our greenspaces are to our mental health and physical wellbeing, how integral it is to our built spaces that they be able to cater not just to the practical living and working needs of urban dwellers, but to our recreational and social needs as well. ODS looks forward to seeing what our people come up with as we emerge from isolation and get on with building our world. It is our mission to continue to keep you up to date with all that is happening in the landscaping and external works sectors throughout the coming year. The ODS network extends across both print and digital offerings that provide resources for learning about and accessing products and services, an online newsfeed that inspires and educates, an industry portfolio that showcases the best our sector has to offer, in the form of the ODS Exemplary Showcase, and more. So be sure to stay in touch. Drop us a line if you’ve got an exciting commercial project on the horizon, a new product that could change the industry, or an insight into the external works sector you’d like to share. As we send ODS out into the world for another year, thanks must go to the whole ODS team for their commitment to ensuring this resource, like all past editions, maintains the highest standards. The ODS team are mindful in all they do of meeting the needs of our audience and contributing something of value to the industry. As you use the 22nd edition of this longstanding industry tool to specify your next project, we hope you think so too.

FROM THE TURF AUSTRALIA CHAIRMAN While there is considerable research that highlights the many and diverse benefits of natural turf, too often turf gets taken for granted. For example, did you know that natural turf: • Has a cooling effect | The temperature on a green lawn in midsummer

options are available. Turf also grows well using recycled water and water saving crystals. • Is a natural product | Turf self-replenishes, provides a natural fire barrier, reduces noise and increases home values (up to 18 percent). Given these various benefits, it is not surprising that the turf industry in Australia annually produces 45 million square metres of turf with a farm-gate value of $300 million.

pebbles, and 40OC less than synthetic grass!

• Residential and property development

• Is environmentally friendly | Turf improves water quality by filtering runoff and reducing erosion. Turf also reduces greenhouse gases by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. • Promotes wellbeing | Open greenspace promotes physical exercise and improves mental health. • Uses less water than you'd think | With five main turf types and many different varieties to choose from, drought tolerant and water efficient

• Commercial, including sporting fields, parks, roadsides etc. Turf is grown and harvested year round in all Australian states and territories, and turf farmers sell direct to the end user or consumer. This ensures turf can be purchased for considerably less than alternative ground covers. To find out more about the benefits of natural turf visit our website. Ross Boyle | Chairman, Turf Australia

TURF AUSTRALIA INFORMATION

INDUSTRY PROFILE Turf is a natural, sustainable product that enhances the environment, keeps the Australian outdoor lifestyle active, and is an integral part of modern landscapes. Turf is available Australia-wide and the use of sophisticated harvesting equipment and delivery processes makes it easy to specify in any landscape. The October 2010 turfing of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, where over one hectare was laid in just a few hours, is an example of just how quickly an install can take place. The turf industry is responsive to consumer demand and has a range of cultivars to suit general purposes as well as specialist needs, such as sporting fields, high-use areas, seaside gardens and waste water treatment facilities. New cultivars are more drought tolerant than cool climate grasses and will grow quite well on non-potable (grey) water and in part-shade conditions. Turf Australia is the national peak industry body for growers and invites all to be involved. Turf Australia was formed in 2004 to support the growth of the industry as well as the profitability of its members. The Turf Industry has a statutory levy for research, development and marketing. Funds derived from the levy are spent against a strategic plan for the benefit of the industry.

LAWN & TURF SUPPLIES

FROM THE TURF QUEENSLAND PRESIDENT Turf Queensland is the recognised industry peak body in this state working in conjunction with Turf Australia. As we enter 2019, water issues continue to face all of our turf producers across the state. We are continuously faced with changes in climate from North Queensland down to the border and different levels of rainfall. Water security and water use efficiency are high on the agenda across the turf production sector and we continue to work with the revelatory authorities in support of efficiencies through best management programs. To that end we must recognise the achievements of the Rural Water Use Efficiency Irrigation Futures major project. Undertaken in conjunction with the Queensland Department of Natural Resources, the project has seen pilot farms investigating new precision agriculture technology, with farms along the eastern seaboard providing variation on climate and soils. Water and energy use efficiency, along with the uptake of various areas of precision agriculture, has seen savings achieved as a result.

Erosion control is a major issue on construction sites and with Great Barrier Reef Marine Park protection. Fortunately, considerable third-party investigations into the benefits of natural turfgrass in erosion control have proven positive. In 2017, we saw the release of an Australian Standard for erosion control that provides guidance to specifiers on this important issue. Turf Queensland promotes ongoing innovation and activities through regular workshops and field days, where we continue to promote Workplace Health and Safety and Biosecurity issues throughout the industry. Precision Agriculture and the uptake of various disciplines of related technology continue to show benefit on turf farms and the uptake is increasing at excellent levels, indicating the professionalism of the industry. Turf Queensland third-party audited accreditation is now gaining headway with many local regional councils and landscape architects specifying its use in the tender process. Anthony Heilig | President, Turf Queensland

TURF QUEENSLAND ASSOCIATION PROFILE Inaugurated in March 2001, Turf Queensland represents the growing professional industry of turf production in the state. In undertaking a Strategic Development Plan, Turf Queensland supports the growth of turf production, in a sustainably professional manner, as an intensive agriculture sector across Queensland. As the recognised Queensland industry support for turf production, the development of the Association's core purpose was undertaken based on the needs identified within the industry body. As is the case with all industry associations, the development of member benefits was paramount, together with addressing the various issues identified by members through the inclusive research of the Strategic Plan, which provided considerable direction for the Executive of the Association. As an integrated industry, with over 100 turf grass producers across the state — covering approximately 2500ha and providing a gross state product of $280 million per annum — it is critical that Turf Queensland work alongside related stakeholders, sponsors, research institutions and members to continue the growth of professionalism, industry best practice and awareness of this key industry supplier to our main pillar industries, which include environment, construction, agriculture and natural resources, to name a few. Turf Queensland Accreditation is the first business accreditation program in Australia. It is third-party audited and a transparent process, providing the purchaser with the confidence that their product has met a standard or criterion created through improvement in the turf industry. Accreditation provides differentiation and recognition based on achieved competency standards. Turf Queensland is happy to advise that a number of councils are utilising the Turf Accreditation Program (TAP) and requesting proof of compliance (copy of current certificate). Brisbane City Council, the biggest council in Queensland, is included.

WHAT IS TAP? Turf Queensland continues to lead the way in driving professional best practice outcomes through our Turf Accreditation Process (TAP) — the first in Australia. • TAP is a third-party audited program with credibility • TAP is a business improvement program to benefit the producer • TAP provides instant recognition of a quality supplier • TAP provides a recognised standard of product to the end user • TAP accredited producers provide the all important RISK PROTECTION to the consumer • TAP accredited producers have an instant marketable competitive advantage

MT WILLIAM ADVANCED TREE NURSERY

GROWERS AND SUPPLIERS OF QUALITY ADVANCED TREES AND SHRUBS COMPANY PROFILE Operating for more than 40 years, Mt William Advanced Tree Nursery is an experienced grower of quality advanced trees. Throughout the years, Mt William has seen many changes occur in production methods and the types of species grown. With the ever-changing environment and evolving industry, Mt William dedicates resources to ensuring the continual growth and development of staff to ensure they remain up-to-date with standards and compliance requirements.

Mt William’s stock is grown using the best horticultural practices. Utilising various methods and technologies, including root investigation at all stages of production, its trees are produced with a quality root system that ensures correct structure and form. Trees are formatively pruned, and are disease- and insect-free. PRODUCTS AND SERVICES Mt William Advanced Tree Nursery specialises in growing an extensive range of both Australian native and exotic trees.

With over 45,000 trees and shrubs in a variety of container sizes and stages of development, Mt William produces the majority of its trees in air-pruned container systems known as Rocket Pots®.
