CAMPUS GUADALAJARA

by Roberto Osoyo Acosta

As we are loyal to people around us and to our own values, we give profound meaning to our lives.

Loyalty is a fundamental virtue that is achieved when we commit ourselves with a goal, value or even an academic or work institution, creating a relationship that makes us appreciate the importance of being honest with ourselves and our choices.

Loyalty is the confirmation that we can withstand the obstacles and adversities that may arise in our path in order to continue with our commitment. This means not breaking our loyalty to whomever or whatever we have given it. Loyalty only makes sense when it is permanent, not an ephemeral agreement that can expire. The purpose of a virtue like loyalty is that we are aware of the value of what we do, because if we are not loyal to what we do, then why doing it? Loyalty leads to good relationships and the fulfilling of our own goals, values, dreams.

Loyalty by Emily

Dickinson

Split the lark and you’ll find the music, Bulb after bulb, in silver rolled, Scantily dealt to the summer morning, Saved for your ear when lutes be old.

Loose the flood, you shall find it patent, Gush after gush, reserved for you; Scarlet experiment! sceptic Thomas, Now, do you doubt that your bird was true?

Trust

by John Greenleaf Whittier

The same old baffling questions! O my friend, I cannot answer them. In vain I send My soul into the dark, where never burn The lamps of science, nor the natural light Of Reason’s sun and stars! I cannot learn Their great and solemn meanings, nor discern The awful secrets of the eyes which turn Evermore on us through the day and night

With silent challenge and a dumb demand, Proffering the riddles of the dread unknown, Like the calm Sphinxes, with their eyes of stone, Questioning the centuries from their veils of sand! I have no answer for myself or thee, Save that I learned beside my mother’s knee; “All is of God that is, and is to be; And God is good.” Let this suffice us still, Resting in childlike trust upon His will Who moves to His great ends unthwarted by the ill.

Friends by William B. Yeats

Now must I these three praise, Three women that have wrought What joy is in my days; One that no passing thought, Nor those unpassing cares, No, not in these fifteen Many times troubled years, Could ever come between Heart and delighted heart; And one because her hand Had strength that could unbind What none can understand, What none can have and thrive, Youth’s dreamy load, till she So changed me that I live Labouring in ecstasy. And what of her that took All till my youth was gone With scarce a pitying look?

How could I praise that one?

When day begins to break I count my good and bad, Being wakeful for her sake, Remembering what she had, What eagle look still shows, While up from my heart’s root So great a sweetness flows I shake from head to foot.

Answers

by Elizabeth Jennings

I keep my answers small and keep them near; Big questions bruised my mind but still I let Small answers be a bulwark to my fear.

The huge abstractions I keep from the light; Small things I handled and caressed and loved. I let the stars assume the whole of night.

But the big answers clamoured to be moved Into my life. Their great audacity Shouted to be acknowledged and believed.

Even when all small answers build up to Protection of my spirit, I still hear Big answers striving for their overthrow

And all the great conclusions coming near.
