Communication studies seeking content for KHEN Channel 17 Sam Littlefield Staff Writer
The department of communication studies is in the process of acquiring local television channel KHEN Channel 17, which has been managed by the department of information access through Time Warner Cable Company. The department of information access has, until now, been in charge of both channels 17 and 18, but is giving up both of the channels. Channel 18 will be inherited by the Kansas City School District and channel 17 by UMKC. The department of communications studies expects to have full control of channel 17 by the end of the month. “The handover is still happening,” said Peter Morello, associate professor of journalism. “With anything big it takes time to connect.” Morello, who served for 15 years as a correspondent for the Public Broadcasting Service before coming to UMKC, is overseeing an independent study of students working with channel 17. The two students responsible for channel 17’s content management and production this semester are seniors Riley Kurtenbach and Brittney Ernst. “Tuesday [Feb. 18] we hope to get some schedules going,” Ernst said. “Right now we’re still in the process of finding out how the system works

Illustration // Joey Hill and how to use it properly.” As part of their independent study, Ernst and Kurtenbach will review all content provided by students, professors and student organizations. After initial reviewing, the approved content will be uploaded into a database, where they will then be able to select content to fill up the various broadcasting schedules.
The agreement that the department of communications studies has with Time Warner mandates that at least 40 percent of channel 17’s scheduled content must originate from local sources. The agreement also states that all content aired must be of some educational value and cannot be of any higher rating than TV-14. Although Morello has been
soliciting content for the past year, there is still a need for more local content. This need creates a unique opportunity for students to submit their own content for a chance to have it broadcasted across the Kansas City metro area. “It looks good on a resume,” Morello said, “when you’ve had a segment, or a show, or a report transmitted to a half million households.” Morello’s hope for channel 17 is that it will eventually be completely run by students and be something that UMKC can be proud of. Kurtenbach and Ernst are open to reviewing content from any department at UMKC and any original content created by UMKC students that meets the educational and rating requirements. “I would love to get some student films from the film department,” Ernst said. “I would love to get even some guest lectures recorded here at UMKC. Even if someone wanted to produce their own show or content, something they would normally put on the internet. If we feel it is acceptable we will hopefully put it up.” For anyone at UMKC interested in submitting content for review, please contact Peter Morello at morellop@ umkc.edu. slittlefield@unews.com

Pass the milk: Cookies with Chi-O a homemade tradition
The women of Chi Omega throw what they know.
Chi Omega hosted its annual Cookies with Chi-O event at its chapter house on Feb. 12. This was an opportunity for everyone at UMKC to meet the newly initiated members, tour the chapter house and socialize with the women of Chi Omega. “It’s just a tradition we have,” said sisterhood chair Marjorie Farrington. “You know, cookies are, especially around Valentine’s Day, are a really sweet treat. We have a lot of Valentine’s Day themed cookies.

they did not become official members until this semester. “It’s just good involvement in the campus,” Franklin said. “We do a lot of volunteer work. It’s just a good way to have a family away from home. I really like it.” Franklin baked cookie brownies, a combination of the two sweet treats. Each of the approximately 80 members contributed cookies for the event. The seniors provided supplies such as soft drinks, plates and cups. “This is definitely one of our big events that allows other members on campus to come and just talk to us and get to know us, get to see our house and meet all the new girls that were just initiated,” said Alex Johnson, administrative secretary for the National Pan-Hellenic Council. “I really like this event. It’s very relaxed and fun. Everyone gets to eat and talk. I think it’s a good way to get to know everybody.” Johnson brought heart-shape cookies in honor of Valentine’s Day. Cookies were set out throughout the house for guests to enjoy while mingling with other students. Tis the season for H & R block advertisments filling the air and planning what you’re going to do with that hard earned tax refund. Tax season is in full swing and filing your taxes can be a confusing and tricky process that many college students are tackling for the first time. There are many different tax services where you can pay to have a professional do your taxes or you can choose to do them yourself, which is becoming a more and more popular choice by the year due to the increase in and ease of onlne e-filing in the last decade. Here are some tips to help you decide whats best for filing your taxes and how to best prepare yourself for April 15. Ashley Lane | Production Assistant

Breakfast Getting to know running experiments in conference rooms. I came here right as they were finalizing the plans for the building.
One of the things that Dean TengKee Tan was really committed to when he recruited me was building a research laboratory. So we went to sit down with the architects and interior designers and looked at basically a finished plan for the entire building and we said ‘Where the heck are we going to fit a lab in here?’ Well it turns out they had a basement that they weren’t using. It wasn’t going to have any windows; it was basically going to be all pipes and heating and stuff like that. And they said we don’t actually need all that space for utilities, so we basically created a first floor; they actually renumbered the building. We are the first floor, we are not in the basement.
That’s cool that you actually got to have a say in it.
Dr. Self engages student assistants in research studies. Jake Newstrom
A&E Editor
This week I sat down with Dr. Will Self, assistant professor of leadership and organizational behavior at the Henry W. Bloch School of Management. Self is well-known among students and faculty for his research and positive influence on campus. I had a chance to ask him about his work here at UMKC, as well as get an inside look at his lab.
What brought you to the Bloch School? It was not your traditional faculty placement experience. I did my Ph.D. in California at U.C. Berkley, and as I was wrapping up I was looking around trying to figure out where I wanted to go next. I was really looking globally—the US, Europe, Asia—the big universities. I’m a little different than some people. I wanted a place with a great research environment, a place where I could take what I do and take it to the next level. But I also wanted a place that was doing something special. It seems like sometimes all universities are just kind of the same and it’s hard to differentiate them, so I was looking for something with a spark where I thought that I could not only do good work but I could also make a difference; where I could be a part of something that was being built. Our dean at the time, Teng-Kee Tan, who had just recently come to Bloch from Nanyang University in Singapore, I had heard of him and his reputation in Singapore and about the things that they were doing at Nanyang where they did a quick turnaround in a really short amount of time. He reached out to me and was telling me about the Bloch School. Here in the Midwest there was this university that was really coming into its own and that for years there had been little pockets of excellence. Now, there was this unique opportunity to kind of bring it all together and unite all of these little pockets of excellence into
a school that could rise up in the rankings and hold its own nationally and internationally. He was telling me how there was a commitment to build a new building, which in academia right now is kind of unheard of. To have the money, it’s pretty rare. We talked about the new vision, the new strategic plan; the fact that they were hiring when a lot of universities were slimming their ranks. I am in my third year here so this
was just a few years ago with the recession, and Teng-Kee was talking about doubling the size of the faculty in ten years which no one was talking about at the time. So I was like ‘OK, I am not entirely sure where Kansas City is, I don’t know what’s going on at UMKC, but I’ll come out and visit.’ And so I came out and really fell in love—with the students, with the campus, with the city—and then came here the next fall.

It was amazing, to be able to build this … we’ve been able to build something that’s actually pretty unique in a business school. There aren’t a lot of business schools that have a fully functioning behavioral research lab like this. We have hidden cameras, microphones, observation equipment. This is a playground for researchers. It’s so much fun, and we decorated it to try to capture that sense of fun. For us, research is fun; it’s about playing, it’s about discovery. And I think this space kind of represents that.
So you were here before they finished the new building (Bloch Executive So where are you from originally? Hall). With the new building that just opened this year, we were lucky. Behind the smoke and mirrors, there’s really good infrastructure here for doing research, which we didn’t have before. We were often
My family is Texan and I grew up in Arizona. I went to college out in Boston and worked out of Boston, but a lot in Asia, too. I was consulting and a lot of the projects were helping American and western companies set up operations in Asia. So when I was working I was traveling a lot to Asia, largely China, and did that for a while. Then I went to school at Berkeley, outside San Francisco, for my master’s and Ph.D.
What are your degrees in? Harvard is primarily a liberal arts school, so my undergrad is in what we called “social studies.” It’s like politics, philosophy, economics, a “Jack of all trades” major. I minored in French lit and took Chinese, too, because why not? Then my master’s is in business and my Ph.D. is in organizational behavior, which is basically business psychology; how people interact in organizations.
That’s what you do in your research, right? Exactly. I am kind of like the psychologist on staff here at the Bloch School.
J: I’ve participated in some of your studies, how do you formulate them?
Dr. Self
A lot of it comes randomly in conversations or what I’m reading. I try to read a lot, and random stuff, because being a psychologist a lot of my ideas come from the real world. So when I hear a friend from college complaining about their boss or something that’s going on work I sit there and think, ‘Yeah, yeah,

with Jake: Dr. William Self yeah. I sympathize, but that’s an interesting study. Let’s see how we can turn that into an experiment.’ So I try to get a lot of the influence from the real world, and it leads to a lot of interesting research but it also leads to research that can be applied; that real executives would find interesting and useful in their own lives.
What do you do when you find your results? So the goal in academia is largely publication: to find something interesting, write a paper about it (we’re always still in school), and then you submit it to these journals and try to get it out there so that your peers and the scientific community can see it and debate it and hopefully take it to the next level.
Do you also publish the results here at the university? I do. One of the things we’ve been working really hard on here is to build a research community, and part of that is getting better about communicating our own research and our research results to our students. In the past I think at the Bloch School it was kind of two different worlds. There was the research that happened in secret and what happened in the classroom. And really those worlds should be brought together.
I see that you’re doing that by integrating the research into our courses at the Bloch School.
Research assistants take a break to play 4-man ping pong. with the research process. Some people are like ‘OK that’s enough, I kind of know now what my faculty members do, now let me get back to work and get my degree and get out of here.’ Some people actually become really excited about it and what we’re developing now are ways for them to take that excitement and go to the next level with research.
their own research question, come up with a methodology, collect data, analyze data and produce in the end a senior thesis that is publishable, that is a high level of quality and that people would be interested in. I think then you get a full life cycle of research, you get the Research Engagement Program in your class, where you can just sort of participate
So where did your love for research begin? Were you that kid on the playground watching the others kids and thinking “I think he really likes so and so…”
systems, the way you talk about interactions, the way you talk about strategy, you sound like an academic, not a business person.’ I didn’t really think there was a difference there. It had never occurred to me. She said, ’Have you ever considered being a business school professor?’ Honestly, it had never occurred to me where a business school
You just never know when that one interaction you’re going to have with some random person is going to send your life off in a different direction. - Dr. William Self
We call it the Bloch Research Engagement Program and we have it embedded in these courses. It’s meant not to be something difficult, not over-the-top, but a chance for a lot of people to get their first contact
This year, we launched the Senior Thesis Group at the Bloch School. It’s a chance for advanced undergraduate upperclassmen to do their own research; to actually come up with
and get a taste for it, but for some people who really like it there’s the chance to take it all the way and do their own research.
The lab houses two observation rooms where researchers use surveillance equipment to monitor subjects.
You know it’s funny, I totally wasn’t. Even senior year in college if you had told me I was going to go back for a Ph.D. or become an academic I would have laughed at you. It was just nowhere on my radar. I’m now the one when I see a student really stressing about what they’re going to major in or what they’re going to do when they grow up, I’m like, you can spend time thinking about that but you’ll never really know. Life is such a circuitous process. It was after spending some time out of the work world, after having a job and being an adult, that I hit a point where it was time to go back to school for something. I was thinking I would go back for my MBA. That’s what I always planned on doing. I was out interviewing at business schools for their MBA programs, and I was at one school and somehow something had happened where the person from admissions that was supposed to be talking to me got sick and a faculty member she was friends with stepped in at the last minute to meet with me. We were sitting there talking and about halfway through the conversation she just stopped and she’s like, ‘Why in the world are you applying for an MBA program?’ I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ and she said, ‘Well, the way you talk about things, the way you talk about
professor came from. I didn’t know how they were created. So, on the spot, she educated me on Ph.D. programs and how to get a Ph.D. at a business school and what a business school faculty member looked like. I scrambled midway through the admissions cycle and put together applications and sent them out to Ph.D. programs and just kind of took a leap of faith and went into one … you just never know when that one interaction you’re going to have with some random person is going to send your life off in a different direction. Really, without her, if the normal admissions person had been there and I had done the normal interview, I would have been in an MBA program. I’m so glad that was not the course because I love what I do. jnewstrom@unews.com

I was fortunate enough to work with a team consisting of people from entirely different backgrounds, different strengths and different aspirations. My team consisted of writers, dancers and workaholics. Our studies spanned from nursing, to finance to veterinary medicine. We came from varying family dynamics—some that fully support and accept our involvement in the movement, and some that are detached, unaware or unreceptive. Through this experience, the term “family” has become much more lucid for me. It is not contingent on the blood relatives you are assigned at birth. It relies on the connections, the empowerment, the internal growth and the sense of community you feel with a genuine group of people. My planning team became a family that will never be corrupted. What’s more is that I was able to share this experience with my UMKC family. Roos, you would be proud to know our Chancellor Leo Morton received a standing ovation for his opening speech. Although this event was held off campus, the blue and yellow was present in an undeniable way. Administrators, professors and community members, in addition to the 1900 attendees from across the Midwest region, gathered to ensure MBLGTACC 2014 placed UMKC on the map. Not simply as
Roze Brooks an LGBT friendly institution, but as a university that supports the hopes and ideals of its students. And among the star-studded keynotes and entertainment, we were able to feature names that found their start right here—smack dab in the middle of the states. Country singer and KC native Chely Wright endured three hours of meet and greet, determined to encounter every attendee she could. Kara Laricks, a fashion designer hailing from Overland Park, reflected on how far her hometown has come. If there is anything I learned from these incredible people, this weekend and my team, it’s that we are all destined for greater things— as long as we’re ready to claim it. I encourage anyone who has big dreams, grandiose visions and wanderlust in their hearts to pursue something of great magnitude. That’s what we’re all here for after all, right? We all walk across that stage, but it’s what we do next that’s important. So open that private practice. Start your own political campaign. Write that best-selling novel. Take a road-trip through the trees, destination unknown. Work your way straight up the corporate totem pole. Change people’s lives simply by saying hello. Become the face of a revolution without fear. Do whatever it is that gives you purpose, because no one has the right to tell you your dreams aren’t worth it. It takes two weeks to form a habit—but it takes two years to form a family. rbrooks@unews.com

Long days on campus can require packing a lunch or shelling out for Einstein’s Bagels or the cafeteria. On days where one is strapped for cash, brown bagging may be the best choice. Here are some tips for building the perfect sandwich, hearty enough to sustain, but still healthy and low in calories. Packed lunches don’t have to be a boring peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Spice up bland sandwiches with these tips and check out this week’s recipe.
Skimp on Sauce
While there are some healthy sauces out there, the majority of them are not. Most of them are oily or fatty, with preservatives and other problematic ingredients. If using a sauce, try to portion it sparingly. Measuring the sauce is a good way to get the correct serving size. Knowing the good sauces from the bad can be half the battle. For example, one ounce of yellow mustard has just 19 calories. The same amount of mayonnaise has 210 calories. Lowfat substitutes can help, such as light versions of mayonnaise and creamy salad dressing or using nonfat yogurt instead. Using a light balsamic vinaigrette dressing can also add a lot of taste to the sandwich without as many calories. Hummus is another substitute that is filled with protein and flavor.

Branch out from Bread
There are many ways to lower the high calories associated with bread. The best way is to switch from white bread to whole wheat. Whole wheat breads have more selenium, potassium and magnesium than bread made with refined flour, as well as containing more fiber and protein. Open-faced sandwiches are also a great option as they split the calorie intake of bread in half, which can save around 70 calories. Other options include pita pockets and wraps, which can be wrapped in a more traditional tortilla style, or in a wrap made out of lettuce.
Green is Good
Using spinach and darker greens is always a good idea, and incorporating many different colors of veggies ensures that the nutrients in the sandwich are optimized. For the most part, different colored vegetables usually have different nutrients. Cucumbers, red onions and an assortment of colored peppers are great additions to any sandwich. Green is good, especially darker greens, because of the iron boost, but so are the rest of the colors. Also, don’t forget the fruit. Many people don’t consider putting fruits on their sandwiches when they make them at home. Sliced apples, grapes, tomatoes, raisins and dried cranberries are all great additions to a sandwich. ladams@unews.com

at UMKC. I trusted a gut instinct moving cross-country to come to this program and it was by far one of the greatest choices of my life. This program is incredibly fulfilling artistically, and I feel like I have been given tons of opportunities to put myself into a stretch zone with my work. I’m blooming here. That’s exciting.
What are your favorite roles that you’ve played so far?
Some of my favorite roles that I have played have to be Olympia in “Big Love.” At the Copaken Stage, Brooke/Vicki in “Noises Off” and Helena in “All’s Well that Ends Well.” I have always been inspired by strong, funny women like Carol Burnett and Lucille Ball so whenever I can be funny I feel in my element. My process for playing such a well-known character was to look at her through a new lens. Laurie’s [Brooks]play is not “The Crucible.” I had to look at it as a fresh new character. I think of all of the girls written into the script, people come in with the strongest feelings about Abigail. I hope my performance will make them think twice about their
working on a world premiere and I could not have asked for a better one. It was the most collaborative process I have worked on in a very long time. The script was ever-changing down until the day before opening night, and Laurie Brooks was there throughout the entire rehearsal process. What was so incredible was how flexible she was. I assumed that most playwrights are married to their work, but Laurie was very willing to listen and work with the actors. It’s not often that we, as actors, can say ‘You know, this line just doesn’t feel right.’ or ‘The order of these lines would bebetter the other way, don’t you think?’ and to have the writer there and willing to change the script based on your instincts is incredible. I feel like our choices inspired her
What inspires you?
I am inspired by passion. I am inspired by authenticity. I am inspired by laughter and by people. The stage is a wonderful place where the most real things happen and you can see real people in real struggles. There is nothing more fascinating than that. ladams@unews.com

Valentine’s Day is a day of reds and pinks worn with a heart-shaped neckline, a pair of jeans and heels. Or it’s red and pinks dresses and heartshaped accessories. Sure, love and romance are usually expressed in the color of ketchup and Pepto-Bismol, but you don’t have to dress that way to exude passion. Luckily, romanticstyled clothing walked the runway during New York Fashion Week for fall and spring collections. Romantic clothes are known for their lightness in feeling and color. The color palette usually consists of pastels or white. Hair is left to the individual’s choice and makeup is kept light. Here are six varied ways to achieve the romantic look using pieces from NYFW and Pinterest as examples.
Oversized Sweaters Oversized sweaters are an easy way to convey the cute side of romance. They are boxy, soft and adorable. The Academy of Art University’s fall collection showcased a look that paired a large purple sweater with a long mid-calf skirt and heels, creating a relaxed grunge-inspired outfit. To amp it up, look for a lighter sweater, like the one found in Erica McCleary’s fashion board
on Pinterest, and pair with jeans or a soft colored long skirt. Simple accessories like beaded necklaces or a slouched beanie instantly increase the cuteness of the outfit.
Lace and Chiffon Though it may seem almost cliché to wear lace or chiffon on Valentine’s Day, designers Bibhu Mohapatra, Badgley Mischka and Monique Lhullier introduced fresh ideas that keep the fragile fabrics modern but still elegant. Mohapatra began his collection with a soft pink chiffon couture dress with rose petals. A cheaper yet just as stunning alternative is the lace and chiffon dress from Michelle Barnett’s Pinterest board, “Dresses,” with rose graphics on the bodice. Badgley Mischka makes use of white chiffon by adding gold lace accents to evoke elegance. A good substitute would be a vintage dress that effortlessly combines lace and chiffon. The vintage dress seen here from Chelsy Schnabel’s board “For the Rich Girl Inside” is a much softer but just as beautiful alternative. Add a floppy hat or a floral headpiece with oxford shoes and you’re set for date night. Monique Lhullier mixed volume with light romance in her line last fall. Billowing chiffons mixed with brocade patterns and lace littered
the collection. One of her pieces was the all-black chiffon dress pictured. Getting a dress with crocheted trimmings or embroidery, like the one from “Stuff” by Amy Middleton, is another simple way to reference romance from Lhullier’s collection this particular. These fabrics can also be worn as separates. Liz Stanley’s dress shown here from “Style I Want” is an excellent example.
Graphic Prints Graphic prints are almost never considered romantic, but are instead associated with edge or hardness. The Clover Canyon collection goes against that tradition to bring delicate colors and fabrics mixedwith soft graphics to evoke tenderness yet and excitement. Shown here are two dresses from the collection. Using colors such as pink, orange and blue, Clover Canyon is able to create whimsical yet dreamy clothes that fall in line with the romantic aesthetic. Graphic romance is not easy to find at reasonable prices, but two found from pinterest.com are “Fashion” by Eva’s Glam Fashion and Want*Wear by Helena Zollinger. “Fashion,” is an unexpected combination of ideas – soft with the hard waves – but excellently conveys the graphic romance of Clover Canyon. - chiffon The dress from
Want*Wear by Helena Zollinger is another great example. Even though it is filled with images, the calm green colors for the nature piece soften the dress considerably, making it possible to be romantic.
Layers The simplest way of achieving the romantic style may simply be layering shirts and skirts on top of one another. Here, another piece from the Academy of Art University has a model layered in a gray floral sweater with a long shirt and a pair of pants. Layering clothes from a similar color palette is a quick way to reach the lightness and freeness layered clothing can exude. The outfit shown from LaLa Chasing Claire de Lune’s “Romantic Clothing” is a superb example. The lavenders and whites almost look like one, yet there is no evidence of heaviness or weight from the clothes. Unlike colors can also be matched for the same romantic lightness, such as Chasing’s pin of the girl with a brocade corset top and a floral skirt that is layered over a tie-dye one. Thrift stores are good places to go to find easily combinable clothes.
Sparkly Goddess Along with graphic prints, sparkly fabric isn’t generally thought to

convey ease. When constructed into the correct silhouette, however, the sparkly goddess romantic is quite stunning and powerful. Just take a look at the two models in Alon Livné’s fall collection. One seems to embody a subdued glamorous 1920s actress while the other one is a Grecian goddess. The simplicity, as well as the soft color scheme, is this style’s strong point and it makes both women look at,elegant and at ease. Alternatives are difficult to find, as there must be a balance between the glitter and ornamental extravagance and the matte fabric. Too much glitter or sparkle is loud, and draping yourself in jewelry ruins the simplicity of the romantic style. Easier-to-recreate examples are the pink glitter dress and the shiny yellow dress. These are both perfect substitutes because the amount of glittery or shiny material is less overpowering than the matte fabric. The yellow dress has but subdued shiny thread so as not to overpower the lightness of the silhouette and color. With Grecian or flapper accessories, Livné’s collection can easily be referenced. With these suggestions, you’ll be able to individualize the romantic clothing style and add to its versatility. These designers can all be found on mbfashionweek.com.

Into the rabbit hole:‘The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry’
APLSOZ beats set the audience free
Matt Melson Staff Writer It is said that one out of every 100 people is a psychopath, a person who has no empathy or feelings. They are deceitful, manipulative, delusional and sometimes deadly. “The Psychopath Test” gives us a glimpse into the minds of these people, insight into the madness industry and what makes a person a psychopath. This book is an attention-grabber from the very first page. The first chapter opens with a true story that happened to the author and plunges him into the rabbit hole of madness. An anonymous man sends one of Ronson’s friends a package with a puzzle inside: no return address, nothing indicating who it was from; just a package with an intricate and complex puzzle. After months of investigating and endless hours spent trying to solve the puzzle, Ronson finally thinks he has at least solved the mystery of who sent the unsolvable puzzle. Jon then tracks down the suspected man. Of course, when he finds him, the man denies writing the puzzle, but there is just something fishy about him. After endless attempts at trying to get the man to confess to his evil creation, Ronson then comes to the conclusion that the man who wrote the puzzle must be a psychopath. But this experience leaves Ronson with many questions. Why did he write it? What did he get out of it? What makes a psychopath? These are the questions that he sets out to answer by exploring the world of psychopaths. This book isn’t called “The Psychopath Test” for nothing. During Ronson’s exploration into madness he comes across a forty point test that psychologists actually use to diagnose a psychopath. If the subject scores 30 or above, then, clinically, he or she is considered a psychopath. And, yes, I took the test and scored higher than I was hoping for: 21. The rest of the book is fascinating.

There were several times I became very nervous while reading this book because I kept thinking I was a
psychopath, but in the end the book addresses this point. Ronson writes that if you are afraid that you might be a psychopath, then you aren’t one. Psychopaths aren’t afraid. The next time you are looking for a good read, pick up this book. You won’t be able to put it down.

While its main problems are not exactly mitigated to the annals of aesthetics, writing or the talent of the actors, the issue lies within the work’s inability to understand not only its own genre, but also what kind of audience it’s made for. The lovingly hand-bound program with a cartoon illustration of a rabbit wearing a crown presenting the thumbs-up to the viewer is arguably the most believable piece of acting the audience will see that night. It is not difficult to envision that “A Tale of Two Rabbys” is a simple presentation intended for children The drawing on the opposite side Tabby fights off the Squirrel Squadrons and Gopher Governments. This line seems to describes the tale of Tabby the mad carnal impulses of his brethren destroy whatever parts of Tabby’s
character that have been developed up to this point. He is, in fact, not any better than his brethren, and the idea of this story being about advocating knowledge and uniqueness is destroyed with it. The next day Tabby picks a fresh flower for Abby and presents it to her in an attempt to create what he felt was a budding relationship. While presenting her the flower, however, a nearby Rabby scoffs at the gesture and Tabby turns and leaves, feeling rejected. Defeated and alone, Tabby wanders the landscape of the farmer’s backyard until he is caught in a rodent trap and taken in as a pet of the farmer’s son. What follows is a short sequence in which the narrator returns to describe Tabby’s eventual spiral into madness as he runs on an exercise wheel, becoming more and more physically fit until one day he finally breaks the wheel off its mount and rolls it into the glass wall of the hamster cage, cracking it. Realizing that this is his one chance at freedom, he bangs on the glass with his paws until he finally breaks free and scurries back to Rabby Land. Tabby returns to find his home in dire straights. In the intervening months since his incarceration, Rabby Land has become overrun with squirrels and gophers. This brings Tabby into a murderous rage and he uses his newfound physical strength to attack the invaders and reclaim Rabby Land. Having driven out the intruders, Tabby is hailed as a hero by the Rabbys and made king. While at first he opposes this new position, feeling he could not live up to the responsibility, he changes his mind when he is given a harem of concubines. What follows is a shockingly wellchoreographed orgy sequence in which Tabby is writhing in pleasure with the group of concubines while an actor moans and shouts from behind the curtain, “Safe word! Safe word!” At this point it seems that the titular hero is falling into the very vices he once rejected, and the short interlude following shows that years have passed and Tabby has become a fat drunkard ruling Rabby Land with an iron tyrannical fist. His lack of real leadership has given way to the appearance of a cat who now threatens the inhabitants of Rabby Land. As hope seems to fade away for the Rabbys, the fourth act marks the appearance of the true heroine of the tale, Babby. Babby is a young Rabby who has heard much of Tabby’s tales of heroism and experienced his tyranny firsthand. After a chance encounter with the cat, she narrowly avoids being eaten and seeks shelter in Tabby’s castle. While trying to convince Tabby to get up and defend the Rabbys, Babby reminds Tabby of his long-lost first love, Abby. The resulting remembrance causes Tabby’s libido to inflame and he begins to chase Babby around his castle until finally she concedes and they have passionate sex before the audience’s ears. A post-coital Tabby lumbers off stage as Babby orders him to “go get that pussy!” to a dutiful and no doubt exhausted “hardy har har” by all in attendance. As Tabby runs out to challenge the cat, he begins to hear the praises of his subjects in his head as they cheer him on louder and louder, building up to a spectacular finale in which, while sticking his head out of a rabbit hole, Tabby is decapitated by a passing lawnmower and a large prop rabbit head is thrown out onto center stage. This story can be seen in the light of a tragedy or cautionary tale, or even more accurately a spiteful story about an intellectual who was doomed from the beginning, filling an inner emptiness with the things that eluded him in life only to be chopped down – literally – by the whirling blades of fate. It seems that “A Tale of Two Rabbys” tries too hard to be a childish story with adult undertones and subtext, and approaches being a hard-hitting tragedy too lightly and too suddenly at the end. The work comes up short in a lot of ways that make a truly compelling story on either side of the spectrum. jhill@unews.com
Valentine’s Day party made easy with stoplight signals Eppie O’Neal Staff Writer
The Point Bar & Grill, tucked between the Plaza and Westport, held a stoplight-themed Valentine’s Day party hosted by 95.7 The Vibe. The bar is a casual eatery by day and transforms into a trendy hotspot at night. The party started at 8 p.m. and consisted of wearing wristbands issued in order to easily identify who was taken. Red meant you were off the dating market, yellow told on-lookers that your situation was complicated and green meant you were looking for that someone special. Steven Hooks, 25, arrived at the party at 10:30 p.m. and selected a green wristband for his relationship status along with his group of single friends. “I haven’t approached anyone tonight,” Hooks said. “I’m just here to hang out with my friends.” He didn’t receive any advances either. If the chance of finding that special someone was looking doubtful then patrons could try their luck with the radio station by registering for a chance to win tickets to see rapper 2 Chainz perform and win other prizes. “We dared people to do stuff for 2 Chainz tickets,” said Ivani Bing from 95.7 The Vibe. “We dared one guy to ask girls for their phone number. “After trying four groups he still didn’t have a phone number.” The crowd participation made the games entertaining. “A girl gave someone a lap dance for 2 Chainz tickets and we had a twerking contest,” Bing said. Every corner of the bar was crowded. Guests could venture downstairs to a lounge area and another full bar for a change of scenery. The DJ spun hip-hop and R&B hits that vibrated through both floors of the bar. The music prompted some to show off their dance moves. The power hour from 9-11p.m. drew in the mixed crowd for ultracheap drink specials, where patrons paid a low price for all the wells and domestic drafts they could handle. Boulevard Chocolate Ale was the popular drink of the night, and free roses added a romantic touch. Florene Frazier, 23, spent the evening eating a romantic dinner prepared by her boyfriend and reluctantly went out with her single friends. “The red wristband is great,” Frazier said. ”Now I don’t have to worry about someone approaching me.It’s a nice crowd tonight.” Those who were looking for someone special and fell short were still able to mingle, dance and just forget about how miserable Valentine’s Day can be for some singles. The party went late into the night. The bar closed its doors shortly after 2 a.m. eoneal@unews.com
