INTRODUCTION PROJECT STATEMENT

R I L LITO RIVE R

CH R I S T M

This student project is aimed at reimagining what the Prop 407 Palo Verde / Camino Miramonte Bicycle Boulevard could become. Our main goal for this project was to help reduce local flooding by implementing green infrastructure into the site in a way that benefits the local community and linking the new bike boulevard with the existing bike loop.

FLOODING

Even though Site 1 is the lowest end of the project, Site 1 is one of the driest areas due to the Christmas wash flowing around the site. We are proposing three key areas to place bioswales. These areas showed higher levels of flood activity that cause a chain reaction of more flooding. By placing bioswales in these areas we hope to drastically reduce any flooding that would occur.

THREE BIOSWALES What is Bioswale?

A bioswale is a channel designed to contain and convey stormwater run off, remove debris and pollution, and recharge groundwater.

How Does It Work?

Bioswales are vegetated channels that consist of a drainage course with sloped sides. The swale fills with water during a storm and naturally helps filter out pollutants and recharge the ground water in the area. Diamond

KLEINDALE / PALO VERDE Local moving and storage companies tend to use this intersection as a loading zone. From our observations, we noticed during the bike count, that at least five trucks park and load starting at 7am. In addition, not many cyclists use the road early in the morning. Furthermore, Palo Verde does not experience much vehicular traffic in this particular area.

KEY PLAN

Along E Kleindale Rd, neighboring local businesses use the shoulders to park. In addition, there are also occasional planters which could be further developed to act as green infrastructure. We believe that the preservation of the businesses’ parking is of major importance. Based on the flood map and topography data, incorporating a big chicane would help in reducing local flooding.

O VERDE

MICHIGAN Left Turn A Michigan left is an at-grade intersection design that replaces each left turn at an intersection between a (major) divided roadway and a secondary (minor) roadway with the combination of a right turn followed by a U-turn, or a U-turn followed by a right turn, depending on the situation.

PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE Diamon

After recieving community feedback we noticed that more than half of the responses we recieved said that they use the local parks. The implementation of a pedestrian bridge into our project will provide a safer and more convenient means of connecting the local community with the Brandi Fenton memorial park just to the North.
