Thank you for your support this past year Alumni gifts encourage personal development and provide a great deal of enjoyment through clubs, volunteering and student media. This year, alumni donations have funded coaching and equipment for sports clubs, supported an on-campus community experience for first year students and provided scholarships and bursaries. We are immensely thankful. It isn’t just on behalf of current students that I say these thanks, as many of the longerlasting projects will benefit students long into the future. Higher Education is changing, but one thing is clear: whatever form the future takes, your donations will continue to benefit students at Bath. Your support will never be undervalued. On behalf of the student body, I wish to thank each of you again for your generosity.

Ellie Hynes, BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Science 2013 Students’ Union President 2013-14

Thank you for supporting the very brightest minds here at the University of Bath The generosity of our alumni and friends never ceases to amaze me, and this year you have contributed to a record year in terms of funds raised. What this means is that we are able to invest in people. It is our community that makes everything we do possible. From our scholars just starting their university experience, to our PhD students who are the lifeblood of our research, to our Prize Research Fellows addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, your support has helped us attract the brightest minds to the University of Bath. Throughout this year’s Donor Report you will meet some of the exceptional people in whom you, collectively, have invested, and hear from some of our alumni about their experience of giving. I hope you will take pride in the vital role that you have played this year as a donor to the University.

elcome to this year’s Donor Report. I hope you find it inspiring. Letting you, our donors, know the impact your gifts have made is a responsibility we take seriously, so your feedback would be very welcome. As the Vice-Chancellor writes, it has been a record year for funds raised, but I am most struck by the breadth of our support base and the diversity of projects you support. It is increasingly clear that the University is in effect a collection of charities, supporting education, doing medical research, addressing climate change, and confronting child poverty. I am also encouraged by our inclusion in new corporate scholarship schemes. There are lots of universities for these companies to choose from, and it is testament to the standing of our students, and the graduates they become, that we are in the very select group. It’s not all large cheques, though; we are grateful for every single gift, and undertake to do our best with each of them, to harness all that is best about Bath, our students, staff, graduates and friends, to make a difference.

cholarships change lives. They offer brighter futures. They create opportunities to thrive academically and personally, which might otherwise be difficult. Financial support for a bright young person can open up the path to success. But the power of a scholarship is about more than money; it is profoundly encouraging too. As one of this year’s scholars put it, “To have a complete stranger invest in me and encourage my progression is humbling.” Indeed, our scholars have an excellent track record of success, knowing that their financial burden is lightened and that the Bath community is behind them all the way.

My ambition: to restore my home country Bath alumni and the Windle Trust are making it possible for scholar Sabiti Mugara to earn his MSc in International Development and help transform the society and economy of his civil war-torn home country.

Sabiti was sent to a primary school 15km away from his home and would sometimes go hungry at school, or not make it home and have to stay at an aunt’s house. Despite this, he remained determined. His performance at school was excellent so his parents decided to send him to a boarding school 300km away. Sabiti left home for many years, something that was very difficult for him and his family. After completing secondary school, Sabiti’s dreams of going to university were shattered when civil war broke out in Congo. Several of his family members were killed, and they lost all of their cattle and means to survive. The family fled to Uganda, where they have lived in a refugee settlement ever since. Sabiti’s younger brother had to abandon his schooling in order to support their elderly parents and grow food. As the only educated child in the whole family, Sabiti says, “It has been a big challenge as all their hope is on me.”

Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). He gained a 2:1 in Social Work from a university in Uganda, whilst spending university holidays volunteering in his settlement to educate young people, clear roads and grow food. He also helped set up small enterprises and social co-operatives that improved settlement life for his community. Throughout this time Sabiti stayed focused on his ambition to return home and help Congo’s recovery from civil war, saying, “I left my heart with my people in the Democratic Republic of Congo and I want desperately to prepare myself for the day when I might be able to go back and help them. As the youngest boy in my village and one of the first to attend University, I have known for some time that I have a great responsibility to inspire the other members of my community whom I have left behind.” With the support of Bath alumni and the Windle Trust, Sabiti has now been given the life-changing opportunity to come to the UK and study International Development at Bath. “My MSc in International Development will be of great use in implementing development policies and projects,” says Sabiti. “This might include liberating women and girls from slavery, building local economies, alleviating poverty and promoting good governance, healthcare, education, human rights and a sustainable environment. There’s a lot of work to do, but with my Masters from Bath I feel prepared to help as much as I can.”

DONOR PROFILE

Bath was my platform for success It’s true that to be successful, you have to be passionate about what you do. I was always interested in current affairs and business because it was fast-paced and constantly changing. Bath supported my ambition by virtue of the different skills it gave me. The investment banking business is run by highly intelligent people, but organisational structures can lead to a myopic perspective of effective resource management. There can also be a failure to appropriately balance the interests of the various stakeholders. Through my good fortune in being at Bath, I had an excellent grounding for developing broad-based managerial competence. I’d studied organisational behaviour and different aspects of psychology in business; humanistic versus behaviourist approaches, recognising communication patterns, how to organise meetings effectively - some of the basic things that immediately put you ahead. I became a Managing Director relatively early in my career, and then moved up to the Global Equity Management team. What I had learnt at Bath enabled me to provide a different perspective to many of my peers.

Developing skills through sports, social life and academia Being qualified is not the same as being skilled. There’s a big gap between the two. I once headed a review of UBS’s graduate recruitment process and there were a lot of bright, qualified people but that doesn’t necessarily translate into usefulness within an organisation. Even well qualified and optimistic people need to gain broad experience, move out of their comfort zones and embrace change if they wish to be successful. As a student there’s a lot of focus on the end product, which is a degree qualification. But in reality, I personally found it essential to balance the social, the sporting and the

I support scholarships at Bath to help create well-rounded graduates who can make a valid contribution to business” academic to feel satisfied as an individual. Extreme focus on one attribute was not for me. Sport, be it football, martial arts or skiing, has always been particularly important to me. This has helped me build my self-confidence. When you need to stand up and convey clear messages to large groups of people at a senior level, you need that confidence. You need to talk with conviction so that people respect and trust your judgement. Universities have a duty to make sure that students’ transition to the workplace is as smooth as possible, and this is something Bath does very well. I support scholarships at Bath to help create well-rounded graduates who can make a valid contribution to business.

A successful investment What I like about Bath students today is their optimism. I’ve been lucky enough to meet scholars receiving their awards, and I was struck by their ‘cando’ attitude. They’re clearly bright, and they want to achieve great things. Without the investment that Bath made in me, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Now I feel it’s time to give the University a return on that investment. To date I’ve supported three scholars studying BSc Business Administration, and I’ve endeavoured to open up work placement opportunities at UBS too. I’m someone who recognises my social responsibility and is able to contribute towards other people – and that’s very important to me. I like to support centres of excellence and people who set an example. This University fulfils that role, and I am proud to be part of it.

ur society is facing some serious health challenges; an ageing population, cancer, obesity and diabetes to name a few. Bath is pioneering research that makes a real difference to people living with such conditions. We are not only finding ways to treat disease, but to address its impact on quality of life too. What psychological support does a cancer survivor need? How should wheelchair users interpret exercise advice? Can dementia sufferers retain a degree of independence? By finding, sharing and implementing the responses to such important questions, Bath is leading improvements to human health worldwide.

Improving life after knee replacements Total knee arthroplasty (TKA), or knee replacement, is one of the most common elective surgical procedures. It is often carried out on patients suffering from arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, to give them back their mobility. However, even after surgery patients can still suffer some pain and be limited to gentle activities. This is usually because components of the knee replacement itself are positioned inaccurately, or their design is unforgiving. To address these problems, the James Dyson Foundation has awarded a PhD studentship to Lisa Fitzgerald. She is developing a dynamic knee simulator which models the behaviour of the human knee. Using this simulator, different knee replacement designs are subjected to realistic forces and movements that patients would experience in daily life. Lisa’s research will enhance medical understanding in this area and, importantly, help improve quality of life for future knee replacement patients. We would also like to thank the Enid Linder Foundation and the Alumni Fund who have also contributed to this important research.

Cancer research at Bath A talented young researcher at Bath has been given the opportunity to develop novel insights into diagnosing prostate cancer, thanks to the Annett Charitable Trust. Ben Sharpe says, “Most prostate cancers are no risk to patient health, as they grow slowly and do not spread. However, some men will relapse and develop treatment-resistant disease. We currently lack the tools to identify patients at risk of relapse. I hope to identify proteins in human prostate cancer samples that will predict relapse, so that treatment can be adjusted to suit individual risks and needs. Potentially, it could spare patients the side-effects of unnecessary treatment, such as incontinence and impotence. It will also help us learn more about the nature of cancer stem cells, and how to target them to treat the disease. I would like to thank the Annett Charitable Trust for providing a scholarship to allow me to study at Bath.”

Making life safer for people with dementia PhD student Jason Leake (pictured) is creating a device that will enhance the safety and independence of dementia sufferers, thanks to the generous support of a Bath alumnus and his wife. Looking after someone with dementia is not easy. Carers can easily become isolated if they feel unable to leave that person alone even for short periods, for example to visit the shops or neighbours. This is something I care about, so I am honoured to receive the RCH PhD Scholarship in Dementia and Alzheimer’s Research. This scholarship is enabling me to research how carers can feel more secure leaving the people they care for alone. Statistically, the most serious risk is that the person with dementia will fall and be injured, so this is what I am focusing on. One way of reducing risk is for the person to wear an automatic fall detector. If the wearer falls, it generates a radio alarm so that a carer can respond quickly. A number of these detectors are already available, but they share a common weakness. Most of them use accelerometers to sense a free fall followed by an impact and then a period of minimal movement, but this results in a high number of false alarms. Often, the device warns the wearer that an alarm is about to be sent and allows them to cancel it if they do not need help. However, someone with moderate or severe dementia may be unable to do this because they do not understand the device. A fall detector suitable for someone with dementia should therefore be reliable enough not to need this feature.

I’m excited to be putting my knowledge to use in improving life for dementia sufferers and their carers” For example, the detector should be easy to wear on the ankle or wrist. It should address the main concerns of carers: if they are equally worried about wandering, then the sensor should be combined with a wander alarm. Most importantly, it should detect a fall accurately and not give false alarms. Significantly, a fall is more complex than just the sudden drop of the physical body; there are also physiological responses like distress, shock, anxiety or pain. This is the unique aspect of my research. I am looking at physiological information which could complement the accelerometer data to make it more accurate and reliable. To test this, I am undertaking detailed trials; if my method using physiological data works reliably, it will be an extremely useful basis for an improved fall detector.

echnology has always been at the heart of Bath, and we’re using our expertise to help shape a sustainable future. Today, alumni and friends are supporting some groundbreaking projects which aim to improve how we live in and interact with our environment. Importantly, these projects are not just exciting ideas. Our pragmatic approach ensures that we conduct research where there is a genuine pressing issue to address. And because we have close associations with industry and commerce, we are well placed to implement our findings in a practical way, for real-world impact. All gifts to sustainable technology help preserve our environment for future generations.

Donation attracts new investment in sustainable energy Solar power could become a major energy source, but many current technologies are simply too expensive and inefficient to become industry standard. In the Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies, Dr Aron Walsh is leading a project to develop materials that convert sunlight to electricity at low cost and high performance. Dr Walsh was originally able to join the University thanks to a donation from alumnus Roger Whorrod and his wife Sue. Since then his research has attracted further funding, making the original donation into a significant investment in the future of sustainable energy. “I’ve expanded my research to a team of nine people with funding from UK and European Research Councils,” he says. “This just wouldn’t have been possible without that original seed money.” Dr Aron Walsh (left) and Professor Saiful Islam

Research at Bath into low-carbon living has been boosted by a prestigious award from the Royal Society. Professor Furong Li is one of this year’s recipients of the Wolfson Research Merit Award, recognising the value of her work which aims to make sustainable energy a daily reality for consumers. She has already influenced pricing and distribution methodology in 80 per cent of the UK’s power network operators, and is paving the way for smart grids and micro-generation – producing our own electricity in our homes – to become the norm. With this award, Professor Li will be able to focus on highlighting areas of the UK energy network that show the greatest potential to implement these green, cost-saving technologies.

Funding the future of graphene One donor-funded PhD scholarship is fulfilling a talented young woman’s dream of being a scientist and putting Bath at the heart of a revolution in nanotechnology. Ever since it was isolated in 2004, the technology world has been racing to capitalise on the properties of ‘wonder material’ graphene. It is remarkably simple - a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb pattern - yet incredibly exciting. Its powerful bonds allow superb flexibility and greater strength than diamond, yet it is just one atom thick. Importantly, graphene conducts electricity faster than any other material. The implications for electronic engineering are enormous, with new ideas being generated all the time including bionic devices, spray-on solar panels and flexible touch screens. As a brand new material, graphene needs to be understood at an atomic level before its potential can be fully explored. Ground-breaking studies are happening at Bath’s Graphene Centre Laboratory, thanks to funding that includes the D.D. Chittey/G.W. Froggatt PhD Scholarship in Carbon Nanomaterials.

Although graphene has been described as ‘the new silicon’, Asieh insists that it’s much more exciting in reality. “I’m not interested in improving devices that already exist,” she says. “I’m creating totally new ones. It’s limiting to think of graphene as a replacement for silicon because it can potentially do many more things, and we haven’t discovered those yet.” Asieh is proud that her research is helping to lay foundations for those discoveries. “Nobody has done this before, so at this stage we have many questions. It’s hard to predict where this technology could take us, and it’s exciting to be part of it.”

PhD scholar Asieh Kazemi is dedicated to researching nano devices capable of manipulating the flow of electrons. Asieh says, “I’m investigating how to block or focus electron waves using graphene, and how this can be used in electronics. When you apply graphene to substrates configured in certain ways, electrons sometimes pass through only at certain angles, and sometimes are completely blocked. This would never happen in a normal conducting material.”

Asieh’s passion for science is clear. “As a high school student in Iran I loved astronomy, so I was encouraged to study physics. But I became fascinated with the small scale - everything at an atomic level is an image of the world.” For Asieh, receiving funding from a donor made all the difference; she says that her family’s savings simply wouldn’t be worth enough for her to live or study in the UK. “I am very grateful to my funder, whose support gives me peace of mind to concentrate on my studies instead of worrying about my fees and rent. If only everyone could be as fortunate.”

Asieh makes use of two highly sophisticated microscopes, each the size of a small car. They are custom built to keep graphene atoms as ‘still’ as possible by providing temperatures as low as -269°C within an ultra-high vacuum. “The facilities at Bath are very advanced,” comments Asieh. “One of our microscopes is being uniquely equipped with a nanostencil developed in house.” Nanostencilling

Within the next year, Asieh is hoping to finalise her wave guide device before furthering her research into graphene. “I always dreamed of being a scientist when I was young. With this scholarship I’ve been able to grasp the opportunity to make it happen.”

DONOR PROFILE

I was 14 when I came to the UK, and couldn’t even speak English. At 16 I left school after only one year there - I passed one O level and then went straight into work. My first job was working in a paint factory, but I knew I didn’t want that life for myself. I wanted to pass my A Levels, so in the evenings I started studying again. Because my parents weren’t around I made my own living, working in a bakery every Friday night and all through the holidays when I wasn’t at college. That’s what paid for my education and I managed to get four A Levels. Two universities offered me places, but I chose Bath because it felt like such a friendly campus and a close-knit community. That’s really important to me. The main thing I loved about Bath was the people. There was always someone there if I felt lonely, and people were always willing to help. When that happens, the same attitude is instilled in you and you start to care about others too. That’s why I give to Bath now. As a student, I really enjoyed sport as well. I got a half blue in badminton but one year I took part in a 24-hour lawnmower race. My team won and we were presented with our prize by that year’s Miss UK, Madeleine Stringer...I’ve still got the photo somewhere! Those were fun times, three happy years just flew by and before I knew it, it was time to leave. Most importantly for me, my experience at Bath was what made my life. My degree is the platform that led to my career and being able to take care of my family. Earning a degree is a bit like passing a driving test - it’s very important to pass, but it’s only the beginning and you go on learning for the rest of your life. For me, giving something back to Bath is a very important part of that process. I learnt a lot from working in a factory when I was younger, and if someone works hard then I am willing to support them. I have plenty to eat and a roof over my head: I’m very fortunate, so I feel it’s my duty to help

others who are in a more difficult situation. These days you can’t do anything without money, and even if we all share just a few pounds it adds up to make a difference to someone. Life’s too short not to share. I’m proud to see that the University has gone from strength to strength because it has given me so much. I feel very privileged to have a degree from Bath and a successful business when there are people who can’t even find work. It’s a pleasure to give something back; it’s nice to see young people happy and not struggling. Some graduates find it easier to give their time, but I now have the opportunity to contribute financially. When I receive letters from the young people I’ve helped, they recognise how important it is that someone has supported them. Hopefully I will encourage a new generation who will want to do the same.

Mona Kapuria, Salh Scholar 2012-13 I’ve really enjoyed my first year of Pharmacy at Bath. I am most interested in Industrial and Hospital Pharmacy but alongside studying I make the most of all the activities the University has to offer. This year I was elected Freshers’ representative for the Bath University Asian Students’ Society committee, and this allowed me to get involved with organising activities and gave me the opportunity to meet and communicate with a large number of students. I have been elected Social Secretary for next year, and will also be a peer mentor for first year Pharmacy students. I’m very grateful for my scholarship which has pushed and motivated me to work my hardest, and has fuelled my desire to become a pharmacist.

he university is proud to be a hub of the Bath community. This year, Bath students volunteered over 6,000 hours and raised over £50,000 for local and national organisations. They in turn are supported by our alumni network, whose contributions also allow students to develop through study, sport, art and enterprise. But it’s not only the local community – Bath students are encouraged to become world citizens. Your support also helps students undertake overseas or unpaid work placements to broaden their horizons and assist developing economies. In this way, the impact of Bath’s success is felt across the globe.

The 1990s saw a surge in diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in children who are now approaching University age. Thanks to the generosity of Bath alumni, we are running our first ‘Introduction to University Life’ course, aimed at students with ASD who are intending to study an undergraduate degree at the University of Bath. There is much focus on the interpersonal difficulties of people with autism. Yet some with a diagnosis demonstrate great abilities that enable them to do extremely well in higher education. However, difficulties in dealing with change are central to ASD, so the transition from home to university is often overwhelming. Many students with ASD are deterred from attending or drop out before completing their degree, so the course aims to reduce the anxiety associated with the transition. It will help prepare the students for university life by allowing them to experience living, sleeping, cooking and socialising away from home in a safe environment before the commotion of Freshers’ Week.

Lloyds Scholars set to contribute 4,500 hours to local community Students accepted onto the new Lloyds Scholars programme at Bath will each contribute at least 100 hours of volunteering per year to local causes. This annual commitment forms a key part of the scholarship scheme, reflecting Lloyds’ aim to play a constructive part in the prosperity of communities they serve and help develop their scholars as well-rounded individuals. “We have been really impressed with the volunteering efforts of the scholars, many of whom have gone from being led by others to running projects and in some cases setting up their own charities,” commented Richard Cooper, Head of Education & Employability at Lloyds Banking Group. Scholars will volunteer for causes close to their hearts, broadening their experience and gaining important transferable skills such as confidence, relationship-building and communication.

We have received donations and pledges of over £450,000 towards the construction of this unique new facility, which will provide a dedicated home for the Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts (ICIA). This includes support from alumni and a generous grant from the Garfield Weston Foundation, one of the largest and most respected charitable organisations in the country. Alumnus Professor Raymond F. Schinazi has also generously contributed $100,000 towards the development. We are delighted that our supporters understand the need to provide a suitable home for the ICIA, which supports 14 arts societies, three media societies and numerous cultural clubs across the University, but is currently struggling to do so in limited space. All of this support is incredibly valuable. By showing that we have the backing of alumni, and that other friends of the University are willing to support the Centre for the Arts, we are more likely to secure the further funding we need from charitable trusts and foundations.

Uganda enterprise trip is ‘a steep learning curve’

Mercer Charity Placement Award helps expand horizons

This June, the five members of the Ugandan Threads Co. (UTC) team embarked on a two-week trip to the Wakiso District, Uganda. Their mission was to set up the UTC social enterprise, aimed at empowering 12 vulnerable individuals to harness their tailoring skills and create a business selling marketable bags made from up-cycled Ugandan mineral sacks.

Suzannah Hance was one of four recipients of the Mercer Charity Placement Awards this year, generously provided by Modern Languages and European Studies alumnus Richard Roberts. The programme, worth £7,500 in total, provides funds to help students undertake charity placements overseas during university holidays or a sandwich year.

The five students’ time in Uganda was a steep learning curve. Challenges they encountered included language barriers, teaching business modules at an appropriate level and difficulties in sourcing materials for the bags. Sophie Esslemont, a second year student in BSc Politics and International Relations, says, “This experience has proved the most valuable lesson of my life so far. I have learnt to put in 110%, and even then to expect the unexpected when it comes to results.” Her classmate Emily Sara says, “No book could have provided us with the ability to set up our international business. I have learnt the true power of impeccably detailed organisation, problem-solving, using my initiative, clear communication and strength in decision-making.”

Suzannah says, “I’m teaching in rural Paraguay for the charity Santa Maria Education Fund which provides free higher level education to young people. Arriving here was a big cultural shock. At first I didn’t fit in and had thoughts of giving up but I coped by integrating myself into the community, saying yes and going with the flow. Now I go to a Paraguayan dance class, sing in the church choir with my Paraguayan ‘mum’, take guitar lessons and occasionally go to the local crafts workshop. I’m learning new things about Paraguayan culture and myself every day. It’s a very special experience that I wouldn’t have had if I’d picked an ‘easier’ choice closer to home. Going somewhere completely unknown and making a difference in the local community has made me more independent and confident in my abilities. The Mercer Award has allowed me to do this and I truly hope my fellow students will have similar opportunities. My career plans have changed from living and working here too. What I enjoy most about my role is human contact, development and leadership – skills that will feed into my professional future. I have thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself into a fascinating culture and language. It’s a real challenge but one well worth doing.”

Trendell scholars help Bath become the ‘University of Netball’

Rugby Football Union funds research to tackle injury in players

The Team Bath netball squad has enjoyed a hugely successful year, and incredibly, three of the squad are scholars supported by scholarships from the Trendell family. In May, the team fought a tough battle to become Netball Superleague champions for the fifth time with an impressive last-minute win over Celtic Dragons. Earlier in the year, as part of the England squad, these players achieved a long-awaited victory over Australia in the International Netball Series.

The RFU is funding specialist research which aims to prevent injuries in elite rugby. Rugby Union is among the most played and watched sports in the world, and is physically demanding with high intensity activity and collisions. As such, rugby has one of the highest levels of injury of all professional team sports. There have been a number of reports on injuries sustained in Rugby Union, but the real challenge is to prevent injuries from happening in the first place by developing a predictive model. The RFU is supporting a scholarship for PhD student Sean Williams to address this challenge, using data collected over the last ten years by the England Professional Rugby Injury Surveillance Project. The outcome of this innovative research should reduce the risk of injury for rugby players and prolong their careers as a result.

Team Bath is dubbed the ‘University of Netball’ for its impressive track record of developing exciting young players into major national talents. Thanks to the generosity of the Trendell family, these athletes are able to dedicate plenty of time to their sport and succeed at international level.

The fellowship is funded by a gift from Sue Whorrod, who was inspired to support the research post following her experiences caring for the disabled as a hospital sister and nursing manager. Jean-Philippe has already made a significant impact on the local disabled community with his knowledge and enthusiasm. “When we advertise for research participants, the reaction is amazing. Lots of people have offered to come back again to take part in future studies because they recognise that this is a fantastic opportunity to help the wider disabled population. There are so many guidelines about exercise in general, but nothing that applies specifically to wheelchair users, whose experience of physical activity is very different. The publicity for our first two studies even went viral among online wheelchair groups, which means we have plenty of people willing to participate!” One upcoming study will ask students to spend a week using a wheelchair, to investigate and quantify the effects of this lifestyle change. “We want to learn about the first physical changes to take place once someone starts using a wheelchair,” says Jean-Philippe.

Jean-Philippe Walhin was newly appointed as the Susan Whorrod Research Fellow in Disability Health & Wellbeing in December after investigating the effects of diet and exercise at Bath for several years. He says, “My background is in biochemistry, identifying the functions of genes. Ten years ago I was working for a global healthcare company, helping to create new drugs to fight chronic diseases, but I’ve loved sport from a young age and know how important exercise is for health. For me, exercise is medicine. Instead of creating drugs for a profit-making company, I wanted to find a valid approach that would really help people. So, I’m investigating the biological mechanisms by which physical activity protects against chronic diseases.”

I love applying my knowledge to real people and having a positive impact on their lives”

2005

We all know that exercise is good for us. Regular physical activity is a major factor in preventing cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes, and studies have consistently shown this to be the case. What many people don’t know, however, is that wheelchair users are at much greater risk of these diseases. Evidence suggests that spinal cord injured paraplegics have a 60 per cent increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and are four times more likely to develop type II diabetes. It is not clear whether this is a direct result of their disability or of a less active lifestyle, because there is a distinct lack of information about the effect of physical exercise on the health of wheelchair users as a particular group. Thanks to the generosity of a donor, the University of Bath is leading pioneering studies in this area.

Ms Gemma Allen Mr Scott Beasley Mr Harry Ellis Mr Martyn Essery Ms Vicky Gallop

“In just a week you already start to see metabolic changes, which means that wheelchair users are at greater risk of metabolic disorders whether they have been recently injured or have a disability from birth.” It is anticipated that the research will provide the solid evidence needed to create tailored exercise and dietary guidelines for wheelchair users, helping to prevent the wide range of ailments associated with metabolic syndrome including hypertension, obesity, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. For JeanPhilippe, it’s an exciting challenge. “Lots of scientists spend their days in the lab, but I love applying my knowledge to real people and having a positive impact on their lives. This research has been a real eye-opener for me, and it’s satisfying to know I’m helping a group that has been underrepresented in past exercise studies. I’m very grateful to Sue Whorrod, and to everyone who has lent their support to the project so far.”

Why I’m supporting the University of Bath in my Will Alumna Barbara Nunn (BSc Mathematics 1978) explains how working with young people inspired her to pledge financial support for future Bath students.

Like many students, I didn’t find the transition to student life easy. I lived in the most horrendous student house you can imagine! And yet, it was the most wonderful time of my whole life because it developed my confidence. For me, university isn’t just about passing exams to get a job; the life experience you gain is tremendous and shapes everything to come in the future.

I was fortunate to have support from my family but many are not so lucky. All my working life I’ve been a teacher and careers adviser, so I’ve seen how difficult things can be for students. I received a maintenance grant and didn’t need a student loan, but things have changed. It’s not just financial worries young people face today, but concerns about how to find jobs and gain experience, especially when you’re the first in your family to go to university as I was.

I first started supporting the Alumni Fund a few years ago after I was contacted during the student telethon. It’s only a small monthly contribution but it’s wonderful to be back in contact with the University and lending my support. Student life was so important for my personal development and I’d like others to be able to have that opportunity. That’s why, more recently, I also decided to include the University in my Will, which will enable me to make a more substantial difference later. I made this decision after coming back to the campus and meeting students and staff. The University is so welcoming, and the atmosphere both positive and encouraging. Discussions with senior managers made me feel confident that my financial investment would be well used in ways that I would feel comfortable with, and would be as secure as it is possible to predict. Talking and listening to scholarship students, I was so impressed by the difficulties that they had already overcome simply to be there. Bath is a much more competitive place to get into these days and you now need much higher grades than I have and also more proven commitment! My working life has been about helping young people to achieve their goals in life, often against great odds, so for me, leaving a gift in my Will to fund scholarships is perfect.

DONOR PROFILE

I truly believe that the University can nurture the abilities of its scholarship students” Having visited Bath again, I truly believe that the University can nurture the abilities of its scholarship students and that my financial backing can make a real difference. That’s why I’m leaving a proportion of my estate to fund the Barbara Nunn Scholarships. I know my parents, too, would be delighted that the family name will be carried on in connection with helping those who lack the support they need to realise their full capabilities. If you are thinking about leaving a gift in your Will but have doubts or haven’t got around to taking action, I’d say go and visit the University as a first step. See the campus, talk to some scholarship students and see what the atmosphere is like.
