From the value we place on collaborative research, to the nurturing environment we create for our students, we know we’re at our best when we’re working together. And a stronger community means a stronger reputation. That’s why we’re recognised as one of the top universities in the country. As donors, you play an important part in our success. Community is at the centre of everything we do at the University
If you studied at the University of Bath, it probably made a difference to your life. Perhaps it’s where you launched a successful career, or made a moment of discovery. Maybe it was where you met your partner, or developed a talent for something new that has shaped your life since then. Everyone who graduates from the University of Bath has a story to tell. You all make your mark. We would like to introduce you to six exceptional young people for whom University has made a bigger difference than most, thanks to your support.
Between them, they have competed at the highest level in their field, made potentially life-changing discoveries, and given back to others. They’ve also squeezed the absolute most out of their time at Bath along the way. Together, they represent our community of students and graduates at its best. They are just six out of the thousands of students whose lives have been changed by donations from people like you. Being at the University of Bath has encouraged them to look further. And it’s your support that has made the difference. Thank you for believing in them.
Ben, Rachel, Kieran, Becky, Duncan and Kate all received scholarships to study here.

Ben Ben wouldn’t have gone to university without a scholarship. Now he’s working to help people with spinal injuries regain movement and sensation.
Dr Ben Metcalfe is a first class graduate, researcher, and now a University of Bath lecturer. It’s an unlikely story for someone who, when he arrived here, felt “like an imposter”.
“You have changed my life.”
“I grew up in Cornwall, in a family that had never sent anyone to university,” he explains. “When I first told my father I wanted to study at university he said it would be a waste of time and money, and that I should get a labouring job instead.” Going against his family’s advice, Ben gained a place to study Electrical Engineering at Bath. But he couldn’t have afforded to stay – let alone succeed – without a scholarship, generously donated by alumnus Roger Whorrod OBE, and his wife Sue. After graduating, Ben knew he could go further, and thanks to funding from alumnus Brian Nicholson, he did.
Ben is now beginning life as an academic at Bath, pushing the boundaries of his research and passing on what he’s learned to other bright young engineers. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” he says. “I’ve loved it so much. And I am so grateful to Brian, Sue, and Roger, as they have changed my life in a way that I never thought imaginable. One day I hope to invest in the students of the future in the same way that they have invested in me.”
Ben’s research helps people living with spinal cord injuries, the vast majority of whom have serious loss of bladder control. That’s because the billions of nerve cells that send messages to and from the brain become damaged and start to degenerate.
Ben has got to where he is today thanks to his extraordinary talent, determination, and hard work. But he wouldn’t be here at all without generous people who spotted his potential and nurtured it. He has more than repaid their faith in him.
Ben’s PhD explored ways to restore movement and sensation following this kind of nerve damage. He has invented electronic implants that synthetically replicate the messages that nerve cells normally send. The results of his work are potentially lifechanging, and could be in a clinic within the next decade.
Our University’s research is world-leading. But behind our brilliant ideas – glowing UV burns bandages, biodiesel from coffee, and water-cleaning algae, to name a few – are brilliant people like Ben. And behind people like Ben, there are people like you.
Your campaign donations have created PhD opportunities for more than 50 young researchers like Ben. 4

Rachel Sports scholar Rachel captained the first British rhythmic gymnastics team ever to compete at an Olympic Games.
“My childhood was a bit different to most people’s,” says Rachel Smith. “I started Rhythmic Gymnastics when I was six years old. By the time I was eight, I was away from home at training camps for two weeks at a time.”
“It was the best experience of my life.”
“In a way it meant coming to university was easier, because I was so used to being away from home. But socialising was harder than I had expected. Friends would ask ‘Can’t you just miss training and come for a drink?’ and I’d have to say no.” When you’re an elite athlete, balancing training and studying is tough, and Rachel has been one of our most dedicated. She trained six days a week at the University, and in 2012, captained the first British Rhythmic Gymnastics team ever to compete at an Olympic Games. It was a remarkable achievement that inspired our community, and the country. “Rhythmic gymnastics is a self-funded sport. It costs around £12,000 for one year of training. We were holding fundraisers and packing bags in Sainsbury’s for donations,” she explains.
massively with paying for my training and competition costs. Without this money I would have really struggled.” Now she works here at the University, supporting our next generation of aspiring Olympians as they balance their studies with training and competing. She also encourages athletes to access alumni-funded Elite Athlete Performance grants, which help cover the cost of travelling to competitions. “I’m really happy to be able to give something back to athletes coming through after me,” she says.
So was it worth it? “It was, without a doubt, the best experience of my life,” she says. “Nothing can top competing at the Games.”
Like Rachel, the University of Bath is a trailblazer. We set up the UK’s first sports scholarships programme back in 1976, and our reputation for academic and sporting excellence continues to grow.
Four years later, Rachel graduated with a first class Sports Performance degree. She was supported through her studies by a Santander sports scholarship. “My scholarship helped me
Our sports scholars work so hard and represent their country in the greatest competitions in the world. But they wouldn’t be able to do this without your support.

Kieran Smith and Becky Hawkes outside the Lloyds building, Bristol
Kieran and Becky Kieran Smith and Becky Hawkes are currently completing internships as part of the Lloyds Scholars programme. Support from corporate partners such as Lloyds means that those who might otherwise have struggled to come to university are flourishing here at Bath.
“A few years ago, it wouldn’t have occurred to me that I could be studying at university,” says Kieran. “I left school at 16 and spent eight years in the catering industry. I enjoyed working with people but I knew I wanted to do something meaningful. I hoped one day to become a social worker, which meant I needed to get a degree, but I had no qualifications.” A colleague recommended an Access course at Exeter College, but Kieran had not been in education for a decade. “I had no idea what it would be like,” he says. “However, the grades I got were much better than I had expected and I gained a place to study Social Work at the University of Bath.” University wasn’t a straightforward option for Becky either. “In Year 11 I wasn’t planning on going to university. I loved singing and had a school music scholarship, but I had friends who were trying to make it as musicians, and I saw how hard it was,” she says. “So, I went to college to do my A Levels and fell in love with science 10 times more than singing!” Becky decided to study Biology and, like Kieran, was daunted by what she would need to achieve to get a place at Bath. “I am the first person in my family to go to university,” she says. “I’m also dyslexic, so I’ve always felt I need to work that little bit harder. I thought it would be a far reach to get the grades, but I’m so glad I did it.” Kieran was recently diagnosed with dyslexia too, which makes their achievements even more remarkable. But being bright isn’t always enough, and that’s where having a scholarship can make all the difference.
10
“The scholarship built my confidence.”
“Everything just fell into place when I found out I had been awarded a scholarship,” says Kieran. “My fortunes went from not great, to amazing, in just 12 months.” Kieran laughs as he remembers his lack of confidence during the Lloyds Scholars assessment day. “I turned up expecting that nothing would come of it, so I just made the most of the day. I ate all the free sandwiches, and enjoyed the experience of wearing a suit, because I had never had the occasion to wear one!” “I was the same,” says Becky. “When I walked into those beautiful offices in Bishopsgate, London, I actually laughed out loud! I thought, how am I here? The whole thing was a blur. I had had a part time job in a shop, but I had never had to do an interview like that.” “Being selected for the scholarship built my confidence,” says Kieran, and he hasn’t looked back since, completing two internships in Human Resources at Lloyds. “It has really stretched me. I’ve gained so many new skills, such as using Excel, planning my work, and being able to approach people and introduce myself. These are things which will be useful in every job that I will ever do.”
“Thank you for giving me a chance.”
“My internships have been brilliant too” agrees Becky. “I wanted to see both sides of the company, so I chose to work in Group Corporate Affairs, then Commercial Banking, which has really pushed me.”
chance,” says Becky. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity,” adds Kieran. “It’s something that I would never have been able to come into contact with otherwise, and it has taught me so much.”
Becky is now considering a career in finance after graduating. “I have enjoyed my internships so much that I am now thinking about applying for the Lloyds graduate scheme. I would never have considered it before. I know I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to go into this kind of career without my scholarship.”
We are grateful to receive significant and growing support from companies who give students like Kieran and Becky opportunities to develop their skills and confidence while they study.
As part of their scholarship, each Lloyds Scholar must complete volunteer work, on campus or in the local community. Kieran has worked in a needle exchange and mentored a local primary school pupil, while Becky has put on a Sunday roast for elderly residents and organised charity events for her student cheerleading society. They have also both spent time volunteering at the homeless shelter, Julian House, in Bath. Both Kieran and Becky recognise how much of an effect their scholarships have had on their lives. “I want to say thank you to the University, and to Lloyds Banking Group, for giving me a
The Lloyds Scholars programme supports 15 University of Bath students every year, across all subjects. As well as receiving financial assistance, and a mentor, scholars undertake 100 hours of volunteering per year and complete two summer internships with Lloyds.
Our Lloyds Scholars have completed more than 8,000 hours of volunteering since the programme began three years ago.

Duncan Duncan grew up in Kenya. Receiving a scholarship to study at the University of Bath was a life-changing experience for him.
Duncan Ng’enda remembers vividly where he was when he found out he had been given a scholarship to study for a master’s degree at the University of Bath. “It’s not the kind of moment you forget,” he recalls. “It was a sunny day, a Sunday. I remember getting off the bus by the roadside to read the email on my phone. And it stopped me in my tracks.”
“It’s an amazing feeling that someone believes in you.”
“Then I archived the email because I wanted to read it later on a computer, just to be sure. I didn’t quite believe it!” “It’s an amazing feeling. It’s a real validation, that someone believes in you.” Duncan grew up in Murang’a, a small town between Nairobi and Mount Kenya, and studied Electrical Engineering at university in Kenya. He knew he wanted to go further, and winning a postgraduate scholarship to study at Bath was the opportunity of a lifetime. “In my one year here, my life changed a great deal,” he explains. “In lectures we were encouraged to ask ‘Why?’ so I learned to think for myself.” “I came out with a degree, brilliant friends, and a ridiculous number of new skills and interests. And I felt very different too. After Bath I became comfortable in my own skin.”
Duncan graduated in 2014 with a merit in his MSc programme in Innovation and Technology Management. His scholarship was generously donated by alumnus Dr Stephen Huckvale and his wife Carol, who have supported international scholars at Bath for several years. Graduating from Bath was Duncan’s springboard into a career as a technology consultant for EY in London. He hopes to work back in Kenya one day, but for now he is making the most of his time in London, which, he says, “almost feels like home now”. We are proud to be one of the UK’s most international universities. By supporting scholarships you are ensuring that the brightest students get the best chance to realise their potential here at Bath, wherever they’re from in the world.
In 2015-16, the University received applications from 44 countries for international scholarships. 12

Kate Kate had the time of her life at Bath, thanks to a scholarship. She now supports others by donating to our Alumni Fund.
An Alumni Fund scholarship meant Kate Aldridge could really throw herself into life at Bath. “Having a scholarship gave me freedom to pursue the things I loved. It meant I could choose if, and when, to work during term time, prioritising my studies and getting involved in university life.”
“I want to help students make the most of their time at Bath.”
Kate certainly made the most of her four years here. She was an enthusiastic member of both the ballroom dancing club and the juggling & circus skills society. She gave back to our community as a student mentor, a STEM ambassador, an international student helper and a telethon caller for the Alumni Fund. She also achieved a first class degree in Maths and Physics, and won the 2012 Chancellor’s Prize – the most prestigious award our students can receive – in recognition of her outstanding contribution to life on campus. You name it, she did it. “I don’t think I slept for more than five or six hours a night in first year because I was so busy,” she says. “I picked things that sounded fun, where I’d learn new things and meet interesting people. For example, being an international student helper gave me the chance to meet people who I wouldn’t have normally met. I ended up with a great network of friends from across the world.” Kate now works as an analyst for hospitality giant Whitbread, and donates to the Alumni Fund herself. “The support of
alumni, who’d never met me, really meant a lot. I now want to help students make the most of their time at Bath, just like I did.” For more than a decade, our Alumni Fund has kick-started ideas, big and small. It has provided grants for research, expanded horizons through placements, and created stimulating spaces to meet new people and learn new skills. It has also helped a generation of Bath students pack in a lifetime of new experiences. And, of course, it has given support to exceptional students like Kate, when and where they need it most. Giving to the Alumni Fund means being part of something exciting. Thank you for joining thousands of others supporting hundreds of inspiring projects, and people.
Since our campaign began, you have donated over £2million to the Alumni Fund, which has been invested in more than 600 projects that enhance life on campus for everyone. 14

Making the difference In our golden year we are launching our new Gold Scholarships programme to help more students succeed at the University of Bath.
A scholarship is a golden opportunity. And, in less than a decade, your donations have inspired opportunities for Ben, Rachel, Kieran, Becky, Duncan, Kate and more than 1,000 others like them. The UK Government’s decision to abolish all grants means students face a greater financial burden than ever before. We want to ensure the best and brightest can continue to come to Bath, so we know we must do even more to support them. That’s why, in our 50th anniversary year, we want to give even more opportunities to students from the most disadvantaged backgrounds.
Scholarships help remove the barriers that block ambition and give students the best possible chance to thrive.
Our new Gold Scholarships programme will help remove the barriers that block ambition and give students the best possible chance to thrive. Each year, we aim to support 50 new Gold Scholars through philanthropic donations, matched by the University. Together this will provide each student with a total scholarship worth £5,000 per year. But we will do more than help financially. We will also help students make those vital connections they need to succeed beyond their degree. We will match them with alumni mentors, help them to find the best summer internships and provide opportunities for personal development. This will include gaining skills through 50 hours of volunteering each year, and acting as future mentors for incoming students.
Some of you have already chosen to contribute to our Gold Scholarships programme; thank you. These donations mean that we can already provide almost 30 Gold Scholarships. However, we now need our community to come together, to help unlock our students’ remarkable potential and ensure the brightest get the best chance to succeed here at Bath. We are grateful for every single gift and act of support. You are giving to the future of a great University, which is built on the achievements and ambitions of our students, our researchers, and you, our donors. After all, it’s people like you who make the difference.
In the last three years alone, we received five applications for every scholarship you helped fund. 16
Looking further, thanks to you This year our University marks its golden anniversary. We have come so far in just 50 years – a testament to the strength and spirit of our community. Because at Bath it really is the people who make the difference: our students, our teachers, our researchers and, of course, our supporters. I want to thank you for the part you have played this year. A year in which our Look Further campaign passed the £50million mark, showing what our community can achieve by being ambitious and working together. And a year when we welcomed more than 150 new scholars to our community, taking the number of scholars who have been supported by your donations to more than 1,000. You should take great pride in these achievements. As donors, you have played a crucial role in ensuring the brightest minds are inspired, and the best ideas are realised, here at Bath. Of course, as we look back and celebrate the granting of our Royal Charter in 1966, we also look ahead, towards our campaign target of £66million. We hope you will continue to look further with us. Thank you.
