Facilities and services Physiology At our BASES accredited research laboratory we are able to perform numerous physiological assessments. These include lactate threshold (LT), maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max),economy, efficiency, peak power, onset of blood lactate accumulation and oxygen uptake at LT. We offer advanced support and technical equipment through off line and breath-by-breath gas analysis, heart rate monitoring, body density and anthropometry, lung function and cardiovascular assessments, blood analysis of lactic acid and glucose, handgrip dynamometers and isometric strength rigs, vertical jump mats and Wingate systems. Biomechanics Our Biomechanics laboratory is equipped with performance analysis software programmes to examine video footage and illustrate key technical points. The threedimensional VICON motion analysis system can automatically track a subject up to 250 images per second. The force platform measures strength and direction of forces allowing precise analysis of the mechanics during running and jumping. Environmental and Hypoxic Chamber Our environmental chamber can control ambient temperature (-20 to +50°C) and relative humidity (20 to 95%), thereby simulating different climates. We can investigate heat acclimation and high altitude strategies, heat tolerance, cold exposure survival and precooling manoeuvres to examine how the body copes during extreme environments. Our hypoxic chamber allows exercise in a reduced oxygen environment (11 to 20%) simulating the effects of high altitude allowing investigations into altitude tolerance and training.

Our equipment includes a plyometric and running track, triple-point motion-analysis camera system, Olympic lifting style platforms, integrated force platforms and cutting-edge resistance and cardio equipment. Our CONTREX isokinetic dynamometers are used to highlight weaknesses or imbalances between muscle groups and to test injured athletes in a controlled setting.
