THIS IS BRIGHTON BRIGHTON WAS FEATURED IN LONELY PLANET’S LIST OF 10 CITIES WITH BRILLIANT BEACHES (ALONGSIDE CAPE TOWN, RIO AND SYDNEY) AND IS HOME TO MANY QUIRKY SHOPS, INDEPENDENT CAFES AND RESTAURANTS, ARTS EVENTS AND SPORTS VENUES.

Brighton’s mix of cultures and nationalities means that you’ll be at home here no matter what country or background you’re from. A colourful seaside place with a big city feel, it’s on the edge of the country, but you’ll be at the centre of everything. It’s an inclusive and forward-thinking city, leading the way in arts, creative technology and the environment, offering opportunities to build on your studies by getting involved in city life. And there is an amazing variety of things to see, do and experience. However long you’re here for, you’ll still be discovering exciting new places to go. 07

I have had the most amazing experience in Brighton. I have never felt so welcomed by anyone as much as I have by the people here in England. Back in America, I never felt like I really fit in anywhere. I feel as though I have found my future forever home and cannot wait to move here one day.

The Brighton Festival is the largest annual arts and culture festival in England. It takes place in venues across Brighton throughout May and, along with the Brighton Fringe Festival, is known for being ambitious, daring and original, just like the city. Brighton Digital Festival in September welcomes around 47,000 visitors to over 150 events. It’s a celebration that unites the arts and digital communities of a city that is on the cutting edge of digital culture. CINECITY Brighton Film Festival in November showcases the very best in cinema, with premieres, previews and special events. And, as one of the festival’s hosting partners, the university gives students the opportunity to participate with film screenings, installations and performances.

Brighton is so quirky and weird and I love that! It is thriving with music and art, not to mention amazing breweries and pubs. It’s the first city that I’ve felt completely comfortable in and I think it’s because it’s so laid back and everyone seems genuinely kind.

Any excuse to dress up in Brighton, and this parade celebrating sea life and promoting marine conservation is a great cause. EASTBOURNE BEACH LIFE FESTIVAL

One of the UK’s biggest free extreme sports festivals takes place on the seafront over an adventure-filled weekend.

Eastbourne,”The Sunshine Coast” as they call it, has been my home for the past three months and I have been beyond grateful for this experience. I can vividly remember arriving one sunny Sunday afternoon in February. The downtown area was filled with people, young and old, on their afternoon strolls, exploring the local shops, and even enjoying a pint with some mates. It was an environment which I have never been exposed to before and I knew from the second I stepped off the train, I was home. As an avid runner, running up and down the coast, exploring the Beachy Head Cliffs, and jogging through the city centre has made me feel like a part of the community. Guided field trips Our study abroad programme of optional field trips gives you the perfect opportunity to explore our country.

As someone who loves history, it has been absolutely amazing to see these places that are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of years old. I never thought I would be able to walk in front of Stonehenge or sit in front of the Eiffel Tower and see the lights sparkle at night. The field trips provided me with memories that I’ll hold onto for a lifetime.

We book and organise everything on your behalf so that you can concentrate on enjoying your trip. We also get group discounted prices that we can pass directly on to you. • Guided day and weekend trips to UK and Paris, France. • Organised itineraries with pick-up points, activity schedules and free time. • Costs usually include transport, entrance fees and accommodation. • Opportunities to visit English country pubs and traditional tea rooms. • Travel with other international students. • Escorted by the study abroad team. London Day trip to central London by train. Our walking tour includes Buckingham Palace to see the famous changing of the guards, Trafalgar Square, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and other historical landmarks, and shopping at Fortnum & Mason.

Camille Burks, study abroad student from Illinois, USA

East Sussex Day trip by coach to scenic countryside and historical landmarks close to Brighton. Our trip includes the chalky cliffs of Seven Sisters, Beachy Head, the picturesque village of Alfriston, a pub lunch and Battle Abbey, the site of the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

The field trips have been one of my favourite parts of the program. They’re a good deal, they give you great insight to places you may not have visited on your own and they’re a great opportunity to get to know other study abroad students.

Bodiam and Rye Day trip by coach through Sussex and Kent to Bodiam Castle, a medieval castle, and the old smugglers’ town of Rye. Bath and Stonehenge Weekend coach trip to visit Bath, a World Heritage City famous for its Roman Baths, the historic town of Salisbury and Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon Weekend trip by coach stopping by Windsor Castle before going on to explore the university town of Oxford and Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-uponAvon. The trip includes evening theatre tickets to a Royal Shakespeare Company performance (if available) and a visit to Warwick Castle, a beautifully preserved medieval castle.

Paris, France Long weekend by coach and car-ferry or Eurotunnel to Paris. Visit the Eiffel Tower, enjoy a boat ride on the River Seine and see other famous sites including Sacré-Cœur, Place de la Concorde and the Louvre Museum. We also visit the beautiful Palace of Versailles. For more detailed itineraries visit www.brighton.ac.uk/studyabroad. Try something new Student life in Brighton and Eastbourne is also full of exciting social and sports opportunities – get involved and explore something new. Student social The university and students’ union have more than 100 student societies – for everybody from bakers to beard lovers – as well as more than 50 sports clubs. They give you the chance to meet other students, enjoy new experiences and learn new skills

The student accommodation has exceeded my expectations. The rooms here are the perfect size and having my own bathroom is such a refreshing touch. You have the experience of making friends with your flatmates in the common room but also have the privilege to have your privacy as well. I could live in this student accommodation for as long as possible, or until they kick me out!

Apartment-style accommodation Living in halls of residence is one of the best ways to meet new people and settle into university life. You’ll be sharing apartment-style housing with other study abroad students and live in a close-knit community with University of Brighton students. The halls are managed by us which means that they meet our standards. • All rooms are ensuite. • There are three to eight rooms per apartment with shared kitchen and living area. • Broadband and utilities are included. • Cleaning of communal areas is included. • 24-hour staff cover. • On-site support from student residential advisers. • Located on our Falmer campus. The study abroad office is also located on the Falmer campus so we’re on hand if you need to talk to one of the team about anything. Student Residential Advisers Student Residential Advisers (SRAs) are senior students who live and work in the halls. They provide student-to-student support and regularly visit your halls to check on your wellbeing.

SRAs work on a call-out and rota basis and are available if you’re feeling homesick or lonely. They also help to organise and run social activities, creating opportunities for you to meet other students and get involved in university social life.

Sierra Grazioso, study abroad student from Nevada, USA

Summer school for teachers and education majors The study abroad summer school is an intensive four-week programme that runs in July. It’s aimed at student teachers or education majors.

I’m generally very shy, I’ve come out of my shell since coming to Brighton and have found a good group of friends. In class I even ask questions and never thought this is something I would do. My Lit and Philosophy teacher in particular encourages this participation in class.

Course dates At Brighton there are two semesters in a full academic year: • autumn semester runs from September to February • spring semester runs from January to June. Autumn semester students leave the programme before the Christmas break and arrange for early assessment in their classes. Year-long students return in January and continue their studies through to the end of the academic year in June. Spring semester students arrive a week before the beginning of semester two in January. There is an Easter break during the term and students continue classes until the end of semester two in June.

Maria Alverado, study abroad student from California, USA

What our students say Every year we see our students grow in confidence and become more independent as they explore their passions and interests through a flexible programme of study. We asked some of them what they would want to know as a new study abroad student. This is what they said.

Doing this student exchange has been one of the best decisions I have made in my entire life. I have met some incredible and talented people and have had some incredible experiences. I am a Graphic Design Major. Studying at Brighton University has opened up so many opportunities for me and has allowed me to experiment with new techniques and ideas.

ANYA WANGSUWAN Study abroad student from New Zealand

My course has allowed me to attend seminars and local design studios which has been very inspiring. For one of our design briefs, I had the opportunity to utilise my design skills to create a piece of work for an international company. As part of my course we have designers come in and talk to us which is very interesting to learn what my future career may look like. I have also been on a few studio visits which have been informative and exciting.

18

I was both nervous and excited when I started studying at Brighton University. However, everyone was extremely friendly and made me feel welcomed. I knew from the first day that I would enjoy my time here. Teaching here is much more open and self-directed. We are given a brief for a project and it is then basically up to you how you approach the project and what you decide to do. I found this way of teaching to be interesting and it has taught me to become more independent and selfdirected. I have learned many new skills such as such as letterpress and bookbinding and I have pushed myself to experiment more with my work.

My course tutors have been extremely helpful and supportive. If I ever had any questions, I could email my tutors and set up a time to meet with them. They were very reassuring during the start of the semester when I was still adjusting the different ways of learning. I have become more confident and independent during my time at Brighton. By pushing myself past my comfort zone, it has allowed me to meet new people and experience a different style of living. Brighton is a brilliant city for international students and has always got something going on. I absolutely love it here. How would I describe my experience in three words? Amazing, life changing and unforgettable.

ANDREW BAUMANN Study abroad student from Illinois, USA I’m a junior (third year student) majoring in Environmental Studies and History. I’m really happy I chose the courses I did in Brighton. They all offered unique perspectives on their respective topics that I couldn’t really get back home. I think this will help with my degrees because both history and environmental issues have strong international components. So, getting to learn how these topics are viewed in a different country is a great experience to have. Since coming to England has been both the farthest I’ve been from home and the longest time I’ve been away, it’s given me a certain confidence and comfort in my own independence and selfreliance. There is more independent kind of learning than what I’m used to, which is an adjustment, but it allows for me to decide when I want to learn outside of a traditional class schedule.

It’s been surprisingly easy to settle in to Brighton. There are so many support systems in place. There’s the study abroad office, which has really been so incredible, and so many other people willing to help you out. Brighton has its own sense of style and is off the beaten path. You really get to learn about and feel at home in this smaller, diverse, seaside city. But you’re still closely connected to London and the rest of Europe with Gatwick Airport being less than a half hour away. The field trips have all been really cool because they’ve been to places I wouldn’t necessarily pick out for myself and yet they’ve given me a much better awareness and appreciation of what this part of the UK is like.

AMY GOSSI Study abroad student from Idaho, USA I’m a double major in Education and Mathematics from Idaho and studied abroad in my senior year. I chose the University of Brighton because of its amazing location, affordable prices and variety of classes. The university had so many options and transferable classes that every one that I took made progress in my degree back home! After arriving in Brighton, I quickly felt at home. The staff is always available if you ever have questions or need help with any kind of support. They genuinely care about each student and want us all to have the most amazing experience.

For all my classes the professors were genuinely excited about the subject they were teaching and had lots of experience. I went to my psychology seminar every week excited because the professor knew my name and wanted to learn from us as much as she wanted to teach. The University of Brighton made my academic life easy but also offered much outside of the classroom. Guided field trips gave me the chance to see more of England, spend time with my new friends, and make even more memories I’m going to treasure forever.

I think what’s made me most glad that I came to Brighton is the friends I’ve made. It’s such a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience that you really get this special bond with all the people you go through it with.
