ENRICHING EXPERIENCES While you’re here you’ll have the chance to take part in new activities and keep up with the ones that you already love, through the university or the Students’ Union. There are more than 100 societies and around 60 sports clubs for you to join. Close links between the university and community groups mean that you can volunteer through our community engagement module, benefiting you and the community you live in. SPORTS

Sport Brighton is run in partnership by the university and the Brighton Students’ Union (SU) and can help you take part in sporting activities at any level, whether you want to compete, keep fit or just have fun. You can use sport and fitness facilities at any of our locations no matter where you study or live. If you travel between campuses for university-run clubs then we’ll help with transport.

STUDENTS' UNION

Brighton SU is a member of the National Union of Students, which represents over five million students in the UK. The union is run for the benefit of students, by students like you. Brighton SU Council is formed of student officers elected by you and is the formal link between students and the university. Each officer is responsible for an area of the student experience: democracy, wellbeing, academic, campus and community, and activities and events.

www.brighton.ac.uk/sportbrighton We also support elite athletes at national and Olympic-level through sports scholarships, the sports science consultancy and our status as a satellite centre for the English Institute of Sport. More information about our scholarships is available at www.brighton.ac.uk/ money.

A network of course representatives makes sure that feedback on the learning, teaching and facilities on your course is used by the university and the union so that students’ needs and expectations are met. You can volunteer to take on one of these roles, or you can become involved in specific student campaigns. www.brightonsu.com

Brighton SU also works with the student community to create a year-round programme of events from cinema and club nights to black-tie balls, as well as helping societies to hold cultural and religious events for festivals such as Eid, Diwali, Hanukkah, Chinese New Year and Christmas. There are lots of student-run societies and you’re free to invent virtually any society that you can think of. Societies can be cultural, political, religious, or course-related.

LOCATIONS AND CAMPUSES A BRILLIANT PLACE TO LIVE, AN INSPIRING PLACE TO LEARN The University of Brighton is part of a forward-thinking beach-side city that’s loved for being original and eclectic. It’s a welcoming and exciting place to be. You’ll find us at locations across Brighton, as well as along the coast in Eastbourne – wherever you’re based you’ll be near the beach and countryside, and within easy reach of London, mainland Europe and beyond.

10

Brighton Pride, 2015 11

BRIGHTON Brighton, with its 5.4 miles of pebble beach lined with volleyball and basketball courts, pubs, clubs, galleries and shops, features in Lonely Planet’s list of 10 cities with brilliant beaches, alongside Cape Town, Rio and Sydney. Three of our campuses are based here – Grand Parade, Moulsecoomb and Falmer.

Buses are plentiful in Brighton and will get you easily between university and town, and between campuses. They are named after notable people from the city – look out for Rudyard Kipling or Ben Sherman. The murmuration of starlings, a huge flock of small birds twisting and turning as one, is a fantastic aerial display over the piers at sunset.

12

Amongst the street art around Brighton, you can count the rock icons on the side of the Prince Albert – one of Brighton’s live music venues – and see a Banksy or two. Brighton has inspired many writers and filmmakers. Every August, the city is inundated with mods on scooters, as the Brighton mod weekender recreates the style of Quadrophenia in its iconic setting. Along with the distinctive Regency architecture that lines the seafront, the extravagant Royal Pavilion is one of Brighton’s most famous landmarks. Commissioned by King George IV, its colourful history contributed to Brighton’s reputation as a seaside pleasure resort. Pavilion Gardens is a popular summer spot and in winter hosts a pop-up ice-rink.

At Christmas, Brighton & Hove’s row of beach huts becomes an advent calendar, with a hut per day decorated and opened up by its owner for viewing. The Brighton Pride Community Parade, a high-energy mix of celebration and campaigning, is the UK’s biggest LGBT event and wraps the city in rainbows every August. Brighton’s mix of cultures, nationalities and religions means that you’ll be at home here no matter what country or background you’re from.

The annual Paddle Round the Pier festival is the ultimate expression of Brighton beach life, celebrating the best in water, street and urban sports. May is a great time of year to be in Brighton. The city buzzes as the Great Escape, a three-day, 300-band, new music showcase shifts into the Brighton Festival and Fringe, England’s biggest arts festival. There are more than 400 independent shops, cafes and entertainment venues in Brighton’s North Laine area, as well as high street shopping at the 80-store Churchill Square shopping centre.

Brighton Fashion Week is a rare chance to see some of the future stars of fashion away from London.

MINUTES FROM GATWICK INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BY TRAIN

I chose to study at Brighton because it is a beautiful place full of life and colour. The city is great, the university is very stimulating, open and bright and there are always lots of people around and the staff here are amazing. The advice I give to anyone who is thinking of applying for this course at Brighton is to just do it! Pack your bags, come here and see how cool Brighton Uni is for yourselves! EASTBOURNE Eastbourne is known for being sunny*, friendly and relaxed, and almost every place you need to go is around 15 minutes away on foot – the beach, the town centre or the beautiful hills of the South Downs National Park.

35

MINUTES FROM BRIGHTON BY TRAIN

Subjects taught at Eastbourne include physiotherapy and sport science and – with the beach and the countryside being close by – there’s an emphasis on the outdoors, fitness and wellbeing. Facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool, artificial outdoor pitch and dance studio.

14

*The sunniest place in Britain is a hotly contested title – front-runners include Eastbourne and Hastings, which both hold the UK record for the sunniest month – 383.9 hours sunshine in July 1911

I chose to study in the UK largely because when I worked in China I met many British people, some of whom I had remained in contact with. My research found that the University of Brighton offered the best course for my needs and I do not regret this decision. Living in Eastbourne has been fun. The beautiful countryside and friendly people will always hold wonderful memories for me. Yan Ting Huang – International Tourism Management MSc

Eastbourne has a close-knit university community and students have their own cosy on-campus pub, the Starting Gate. Besides the modern Towner Contemporary Art Gallery there are also four theatres in Eastbourne and arts and music events throughout the year.

Regular continental markets feature along the seafront. One of the biggest free extreme sports festivals in the UK, Eastbourne Extreme is an adventure-filled weekend held on the seafront, featuring air, land and water-based outdoor activities. A great way to get your adrenaline pumping!

TYPES OF COURSES

Whether you are looking for an undergraduate or postgraduate course, the University of Brighton has many options available to international students.

MRes MRes (Master of Research) courses prepare you for a career as an academic researcher or for a research career in industry. Students undertake a substantial research project alongside training in areas such as research methods.

UNDERGRADUATE COURSES

Applicants for most bachelors courses should have finished their high school education with the equivalent of two A-level passes with relevant grades. Some programmes require you to provide examples of written work or a portfolio of artwork of an appropriate standard. Some students may need to complete an international foundation year of study.

www.brighton.ac.uk/ researchstudy

Foundation degrees

These courses involve three or four years of study and lead to qualifications such as BA(Hons), BSc(Hons) and BEng(Hons).

Foundation degrees are vocational qualifications, designed with help from employers. Most foundation degrees involve two years of full-time study. Foundation degree graduates can continue studying and top up to a bachelors degree.

Integrated masters degrees

Professional qualifications

Integrated masters programmes enable you to study advanced level modules. These include the MPharm, MDes, MEng, MComp and MChem. Many of our bachelors degree courses involve workbased learning – through workshops, short placements or up to a year in the workplace (usually your third year).

26

RESEARCH DEGREES

Our research degrees (MPhil, PhD and professional doctorates) cover a wide range of subjects and are overseen by the university’s Doctoral College.

Coming to study at the University of Brighton was one of the best decisions I have made. My course has delivered good career prospects by providing management subjects addressing key issues of strategy, marketing, operations, human resources and financial planning, studied in parallel with international hospitality development. I truly enjoyed this education experience and my student life in the university. I have gained invaluable experience studying at the University of Brighton. It offers a high quality of education and living and learning with students from different countries, as well as learning to manage myself and time-keeping in an English native environment, enhanced my experience.

PhD student Alice Hagan is conducting research to revolutionise liver cancer treatment. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, Alice’s proposed method of treatment for liver tumours involves injecting microscopic beads into blood vessels feeding the tumour, blocking its source of nutrients and delivering sustained chemotherapy treatment to the tumour without affecting the rest of the liver tissue. When the drugs are delivered this way, the amount of drug that reaches the rest of the body is greatly reduced, meaning fewer side effects for the patient.

If you would like to live in private rented accommodation you’ll need a UKbased guarantor or be able to pay 3–12 month's rent in advance. For more information contact the accommodation service.

PRIVATE SECTOR RENTING

Many students choose this living option; you'll have more freedom and independence and you can choose to be closer to the city. In Brighton, we work closely with landlords and letting agents to reserve flats and houses exclusively for our students.

Budgeting You’ll need to think about bills, contents insurance, travel, food and a TV licence as well as rent.

When to look It’s advisable to look for private rented accommodation during the summer before you start your course. If this is not possible, you may be able to book onto Orientation which takes place the week before the start of term, so that you can use this as a base for your search.

Budgeting Depending on whether you choose the catered or self-catered option, you may need to budget for food and travel as well as rent.

How to apply

House-hunting groups and events We hold house-hunting meet-ups and housing fairs in late August so you can get face-to-face advice and meet other students looking for somewhere to live. You’ll receive information about renting in the private sector, be able to group up with other students, view properties and get help with your contract agreement. You can also join our Facebook groups so you can meet other students who are looking to share and ask the accommodation team any questions you might have.

HOMESTAY

Homestay gives you the extra security of living with a family, couple or single person endorsed by the university. Homestay is popular with international students and ideal for short stays of a few weeks or longer. Homestay is only available to students in the Brighton area. Rooms can be provided on a self-catered or catered basis, where you can have your meals cooked for you. We also have shared rooms if you know another student you would like to share with.

If you are interested in Homestay, once you have accepted your place on a course, let the accommodation team know by email or phone, and they will send you an application form.

Renting as a student can seem daunting, but there’s loads of help on hand from the university and I wouldn’t have done it any other way. Olly Hunt-Blow – Nursing (Adult) BSc(Hons)

THE APPLICATION PROCESS There’s lots to think about when applying to university. In this section you can check what you need to do and when. You’ll find information about entry requirements and qualifications, how to make your application, fees and costs as well as useful contacts.

106

107

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Your academic grades are important, but other things count too. We look at lots of factors to make sure that everyone is given an equal opportunity to show their achievements. Some students are also asked to take part in an interview. We consider all applications very carefully including personal statements, references and work experience, as well as exam results and predicted grades. Your academic qualifications For information about the academic qualifications and English language levels that you need to apply for each course visit our online course finder. www.brighton.ac.uk/courses

International qualification equivalencies If you don’t have a UK qualification our international equivalency guides will help you to compare the grades of your home country qualifications to the UK grades listed as the entry requirements for your course. www.brighton.ac.uk/international/ country

What if I don’t meet the entry requirements for my course? If you don’t have the required academic qualifications or your grades are not high enough, you can take a university preparation programme at our oncampus International College (see page 90). When you successfully complete the programme you will be guaranteed a place on one of our courses. www.brighton.ac.uk/ubic

108

English language entry requirements Our degree courses are delivered and assessed in English. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and the university need you to meet their English language requirements for your chosen course. Please check individual course information to find out the English language entry requirements that apply to you. UKVI requires prospective students who have not studied and been examined in English to provide evidence they have met the language requirement through a secure English language test (SELT), with an approved test provider. This evidence is required before we can issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number. SELT results are only valid for two years from the time the test is taken. You can’t apply for a Tier 4 visa using test results older than two years.

If you have a different English language qualification contact us to find out if you’re eligible for one of our courses. For a list of UK Home Office SELTs visit www.gov.uk/government/publications/ guidance-on-applying-for-uk-visaapproved-english-language-tests. Please refer to the UK Home Office website for further details about their requirements. www.gov.uk/visas-immigration

What if I do not meet the English language requirements? The University of Brighton Language Institute (see page 88) offers English language pre-sessional and pre-masters courses to help you meet our English language entry requirements and to prepare you for academic study at any UK university. www.brighton.ac.uk/learnenglish

If you want to study at degree level or above we can accept a number of other English language tests, as well as SELTs. For further information go to www.gov. uk/tier-4-general-visa/knowledge-ofenglish.

HOW TO APPLY We’re here to advise and support you at each step of your application. International students apply to the university in the same way as UK students, but there are different application procedures for different types of courses.

Our UCAS institution codes are: • University of Brighton (BRITN) B72 • Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) B74. www.ucas.com Deadlines for UCAS application Brighton and Sussex Medical School • All students – 15 October 2016 University of Brighton • UK/EU students – 15 January 2017 • International students – 30 June 2017 You can apply direct to us through our online application form, if you know that you want to study at Brighton and do not intend to apply to other institutions.

Postgraduate study If you’re applying for a postgraduate course, such as an MA, MSc or MBA, you can apply direct to us online.

For English language preparation courses, including English for Academic Study, Extended Masters and Summer Pre-sessional English you can apply directly to us.

Processing your application We will consider your application carefully. If you would like to talk to us about your application before you receive a formal response, you can send us a message through your applicant area on studentcentral.

Receiving your offer

Once you’ve applied, we’ll contact you to activate your university user account on studentcentral. Here you can book onto interview and open days, prepare for your course and ask us questions.

If you receive an offer from us it will be marked conditional or unconditional.

Accepting your offer

We will communicate our decision to offer you a place on a course and any conditions attached to that offer through your applicant area and through UCAS.

A conditional offer may be subject to you obtaining certain grades or qualifications or made subject to you supplying some additional information, such as the result of an English language test.

To accept your offer, follow the instructions in your offer letter (undergraduates) or email (postgraduates). If you have any questions about accepting your offer email admissions@brighton.ac.uk.

An unconditional offer means that there are no more conditions for you to meet – the offer is yours if you would like to accept it.

www.brighton.ac.uk/international/ postgrad

If you’re applying for a full-time research programme such as an MPhil or PhD, you should first contact the research student administrator for your chosen subject area. You will need to submit a research proposal so that we can match your proposal with our research interests. You can submit your proposal online.

I’m Ailish from the enquiries team. We’re here to guide you through the application process and help you get ready for life at the University of Brighton.

You can track your application through the applicant area of studentcentral. We’ll email you with updates and reminders so you know when you need to login to the applicant area.

If you’re a self-funded international student starting a course with us in September 2017 you must pay your £2,500 tuition fee deposit by 31 August 2017. We need to receive your deposit before we can issue your CAS. You need a CAS number in order to make a visa application.

Applying for accommodation

Applying for your visa

Enrolment and registration

As an international student you’re guaranteed a place in university accommodation in your first year of study, if you firmly accept your offer and apply by the accommodation deadline.

Our international student advisers are qualified to give advice and representation on UK immigration law. They will support you throughout the application process and can advise you on the requirements of obtaining a student visa (Tier 4 or short-term study), and how to apply. Our international student advisers can also advise you on making an application to extend your visa in the UK if necessary.

At the beginning of the academic year you will need to complete enrolment – this entitles you to attend your course, use university facilities and join the Students’ Union.

After you have firmly accepted your offer, we will send you an email to invite you to apply for your accommodation.

Issuing your CAS In order to request your CAS number you’ll need to accept your unconditional offer, pay the tuition fee deposit (if required) and complete the CAS questionnaire. A CAS is a virtual document that the UK Home Office will view through a secure online system when you make your application for a student (Tier 4) visa. You will need the CAS number to make your visa application.

For a step-by-step guide on how to apply for your visa visit www.brighton.ac.uk/international/ immigration. For more information about student visas, visit www.gov.uk/browse/visas immigration/study-visas.

To complete enrolment you will need original documentation (not photocopies) confirming your identity including your passport and visa or biometric residence permit, entry qualifications and written confirmation of your scholarship or sponsor, if you have one.

Personal details We may need to ask you for further information before your enrolment can be completed. The university is registered with the Office of the Information Commissioner. To prevent fraudulent applications we may disclose information to relevant government departments, police forces, examining bodies and associated authorities. 111

FINANCE AND FUNDING FEES AND COSTS It’s very important that you make sure that you have enough money to cover the cost of your tuition fees and living expenses before you begin your course. There’s lots more information about fees and finance on our website www.brighton.ac.uk/money. Tuition fees The tuition fees shown in the table opposite are for international fee-paying students starting a standard university course for the first time in the academic year 2017–18. Some courses have non-standard fees. You can check the fees for your course by using our course finder. www.brighton.ac.uk/courses For costs for university preparation courses at our International College and the Language Institute go to page 88 and 90.

International student tuition fee deposit If you’re a self-funded international student starting a course with us in September 2017 you must pay your £2,500 tuition fee deposit by 31 August 2017. Read more about the tuition fee deposit and refund policy at www.brighton. ac.uk/international/fees.

Paying your tuition fee You can choose to pay your tuition fees either in full by 1 November, or in up to six instalments by recurring card agreement. Any payments not made in pounds sterling will incur bank charges that will be passed on to you. Contact the university’s finance department on income@brighton.ac.uk or +44 (0)1273 642959 for details about online or credit card payment or Western Union transfer. 112

International students tuition fees table 2017–18 Undergraduate

Postgraduate

Classroom-based Laboratory/studio-based Industrial placement year Standard

Fees per year From £12,660 From £13,920 £2,000 From £12,830

The fees listed above here are for students starting their course in 2017. Tuition fees for international postgraduate research students can be found at www.brighton.ac.uk/ researchstudy/apply.

Early payment discount

General study costs

International students who pay their annual fees in full before 1 November 2017 can apply for a 5% early settlement fee rebate (eligibility conditions apply).

Whatever course you choose you should expect to pay some additional studyrelated costs on top of tuition fees. It is a good idea to budget for the cost of books, photocopying and printing for example.

www.brighton.ac.uk/early-settlementdiscount

Cost of living

Should I be paying international fees? If you’re not sure if you should pay fees at the international rate, we will contact you during the application process to complete a fee assessment form. All cases are judged in accordance with the UK government’s guidelines and are treated fairly and equally. For more information, contact the admissions team on registryfeesassessment@brighton. ac.uk.

What’s included in my tuition fee? Some courses require the use of specialist materials and field trips. Where these costs are incurred as a mandatory requirement of the course, they are covered by the tuition fee. Other additional costs may not be included in your tuition fee. Please check with the school that provides your course about possible additional costs before you apply so that you can budget accordingly.

Your living costs will depend on where you choose to live and how you live. As a guide, we estimate that an international student living outside of London will need around £1,015 a month to meet basic living expenses such as accommodation, books and bills but not course tuition fees. www.brighton.ac.uk/moneymatters
