ENRICHING EXPERIENCES While you’re here you’ll have the chance to take part in new activities and keep up with the ones that you already love, through the university or the Students’ Union. There are more than 100 societies and around 60 sports clubs for you to join. Close links between the university and community groups mean that you can volunteer through our community engagement module, benefiting you and the community you live in. SPORTS

Sport Brighton is run in partnership by the university and the Brighton Students’ Union (SU) and can help you take part in sporting activities at any level, whether you want to compete, keep fit or just have fun. You can use sport and fitness facilities at any of our locations no matter where you study or live. If you travel between campuses for university-run clubs then we’ll help with transport.

STUDENTS' UNION

Brighton SU is a member of the National Union of Students, which represents over five million students in the UK. The union is run for the benefit of students, by students like you. Brighton SU Council is formed of student officers elected by you and is the formal link between students and the university. Each officer is responsible for an area of the student experience: democracy, wellbeing, academic, campus and community, and activities and events.

Brighton SU also works with the student community to create a year-round programme of events from cinema and club nights to black-tie balls, as well as helping societies to hold cultural and religious events for festivals such as Eid, Diwali, Hanukkah, Chinese New Year and Christmas. There are lots of student-run societies and you’re free to invent virtually any society that you can think of. Societies can be cultural, political, religious, or course-related.

There are many opportunities to take part in volunteering during your time as a student. This can be very rewarding, can enhance your skill set and help to set you apart from other candidates when you start to look for job. We can help you to find an appropriate role, which may even be part of your course through the community engagement module. Students on the module undertake practical projects with local community and voluntary organisations. BRIGHTON Brighton, with its 5.4 miles of pebble beach lined with volleyball and basketball courts, pubs, clubs, galleries and shops, features in Lonely Planet’s list of 10 cities with brilliant beaches, alongside Cape Town, Rio and Sydney. Three of our campuses are based here – Grand Parade, Moulsecoomb and Falmer.

Buses are plentiful in Brighton and will get you easily between university and town, and between campuses. They are named after notable people from the city – look out for Rudyard Kipling or Ben Sherman. The murmuration of starlings, a huge flock of small birds twisting and turning as one, is a fantastic aerial display over the piers at sunset.

Amongst the street art around Brighton, you can count the rock icons on the side of the Prince Albert – one of Brighton’s live music venues – and see a Banksy or two. Brighton has inspired many writers and filmmakers. Every August, the city is inundated with mods on scooters, as the Brighton mod weekender recreates the style of Quadrophenia in its iconic setting. Along with the distinctive Regency architecture that lines the seafront, the extravagant Royal Pavilion is one of Brighton’s most famous landmarks. Commissioned by King George IV, its colourful history contributed to Brighton’s reputation as a seaside pleasure resort. Pavilion Gardens is a popular summer spot and in winter hosts a pop-up ice-rink.

At Christmas, Brighton & Hove’s row of beach huts becomes an advent calendar, with a hut per day decorated and opened up by its owner for viewing. The Brighton Pride Community Parade, a high-energy mix of celebration and campaigning, is the UK’s biggest LGBT event and wraps the city in rainbows every August. Brighton’s mix of cultures, nationalities and religions means that you’ll be at home here no matter what country or background you’re from.

The annual Paddle Round the Pier festival is the ultimate expression of Brighton beach life, celebrating the best in water, street and urban sports. May is a great time of year to be in Brighton. The city buzzes as the Great Escape, a three-day, 300-band, new music showcase shifts into the Brighton Festival and Fringe, England’s biggest arts festival. There are more than 400 independent shops, cafes and entertainment venues in Brighton’s North Laine area, as well as high street shopping at the 80-store Churchill Square shopping centre.

Brighton Fashion Week is a rare chance to see some of the future stars of fashion away from London.

EASTBOURNE Eastbourne is known for being sunny*, friendly and relaxed, and almost every place you need to go is around 15 minutes away on foot – the beach, the town centre or the beautiful hills of the South Downs National Park.

Subjects taught at Eastbourne include physiotherapy and sport science and – with the beach and the countryside being close by – there’s an emphasis on the outdoors, fitness and wellbeing. Facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool, artificial outdoor pitch and dance studio.

I chose to study in the UK largely because when I worked in China I met many British people, some of whom I had remained in contact with. My research found that the University of Brighton offered the best course for my needs and I do not regret this decision. Living in Eastbourne has been fun. Eastbourne has a close-knit university community and students have their own cosy on-campus pub, the Starting Gate. Besides the modern Towner Contemporary Art Gallery there are also four theatres in Eastbourne and arts and music events throughout the year.

Regular continental markets feature along the seafront. One of the biggest free extreme sports festivals in the UK, Eastbourne Extreme is an adventure-filled weekend held on the seafront, featuring air, land and water-based outdoor activities. A great way to get your adrenaline pumping!

Moulsecoomb is our biggest campus, with around 7,000 students. Subjects based here include architecture, business, computing, maths, engineering, product design, life sciences, geography, building, media and pharmacy. Students benefit from professional-standard equipment and resources, and great transport links to the city centre and out of Brighton. Falmer, set in the South Downs National Park, is around four miles from the city centre and is where nurses and teachers, linguists and writers, social scientists, psychologists, criminologists and medical students are based. Here you will find excellent sports facilities, the new psych lab, restaurants, and good rail and bus links. With the beach and countryside close by, our Eastbourne campus has an emphasis on outdoors, fitness and wellbeing, also boasting excellent sport and exercise facilities.

TYPES OF COURSES

Whether you are looking for an undergraduate or postgraduate course, the University of Brighton has many options available to international students.

MRes MRes (Master of Research) courses prepare you for a career as an academic researcher or for a research career in industry. Students undertake a substantial research project alongside training in areas such as research methods.

UNDERGRADUATE COURSES

Applicants for most bachelors courses should have finished their high school education with the equivalent of two A-level passes with relevant grades. Some programmes require you to provide examples of written work or a portfolio of artwork of an appropriate standard. Some students may need to complete an international foundation year of study.

Foundation degrees

These courses involve three or four years of study and lead to qualifications such as BA(Hons), BSc(Hons) and BEng(Hons).

Foundation degrees are vocational qualifications, designed with help from employers. Most foundation degrees involve two years of full-time study. Foundation degree graduates can continue studying and top up to a bachelors degree.

Integrated masters degrees

Professional qualifications

Integrated masters programmes enable you to study advanced level modules. These include the MPharm, MDes, MEng, MComp and MChem. Many of our bachelors degree courses involve workbased learning â&#x20AC;&#x201C; through workshops, short placements or up to a year in the workplace (usually your third year).

Many of our courses also incorporate a professional accreditation. This may mean that graduates are eligible to apply for membership of a professional body or are exempt from professional exams.

Bachelor degrees

RESEARCH DEGREES

Our research degrees (MPhil, PhD and professional doctorates) cover a wide range of subjects and are overseen by the universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Doctoral College.

Top-up degrees If you have a foundation degree, HND or professional qualification you can often top this up to an honours degree. Top-up degrees typically involve a year of full-time study.

TAUGHT POSTGRADUATE COURSES

We offer full-time postgraduate courses and diplomas across many subjects. Most taught masters programmes take one year to complete, leading to an MSc, MA, MBA or MRes. International applicants for postgraduate study should hold the equivalent of a good honours degree from a British university or an overseas institution of similar standing. A pre-masters qualifying programme may be required in some cases.

MBA Our MBA (Master of Business Administration) courses are designed for experienced managers and professionals wishing to develop their managerial capability and their careers.

Video technology enables pharmacy students to record practice skills sessions with patients, and then review what they have done. Dr Bhavik Patel is a senior lecturer in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences. After graduating from the University of Brighton, Bhavik completed a PhD before being awarded an overseas research fellowship. After working in leading laboratories in Canada and the USA, Bhavik returned to Brighton to teach physical and analytical chemistry. Bhavik won the 2015 Royal Pharmaceutical Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Science Award as well as the 2013 GlaxoSmithKline Emerging Scientist Award for his research achievements.

PhD student Alice Hagan is conducting research to revolutionise liver cancer treatment. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, Aliceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proposed method of treatment for liver tumours involves injecting microscopic beads into blood vessels feeding the tumour, blocking its source of nutrients and delivering sustained chemotherapy treatment to the tumour without affecting the rest of the liver tissue. When the drugs are delivered this way, the amount of drug that reaches the rest of the body is greatly reduced, meaning fewer side effects for the patient.

FACILITIES AND RESOURCES

Our BASES-accredited lab facilities include: a biomechanics lab to analyse motion; exercise physiology labs to measure aerobic, power and strength performance; a purposebuilt environment chamber that simulates climates and humidity and their effects; an oxygen-controlled chamber to simulate and measure the effect of altitude; and a biochemistry lab for blood and tissue analysis. The Eastbourne campus also has excellent sport and fitness facilities which include a swimming pool, two gymnasiums, an artificial training pitch, two dance studios, a fitness suite and a climbing wall.

The English language programmes at our Language Institute are accredited by the British Council and are available between four and 30 weeks before the start of your degree course, depending on your needs. English for Academic Study is a programme for students wishing to improve their English before applying to any university in the UK. HOMESTAY

Homestay gives you the extra security of living with a family, couple or single person endorsed by the university. Homestay is popular with international students and ideal for short stays of a few weeks or longer. Homestay is only available to students in the Brighton area. Rooms can be provided on a self-catered or catered basis, where you can have your meals cooked for you. We also have shared rooms if you know another student you would like to share with.

LIVING IN BRIGHTON Brighton is one of the UK's most popular student cities. There is a range of accommodation options available, from on-campus halls of residence to city-centre flats and houses.

HALLS OF RESIDENCE

We have over 1,800 places in our Brighton halls, which are based at our Moulsecoomb, Falmer and Grand Parade campuses, and at Varley Park which is located between Moulsecoomb and Falmer. They all offer catered and noncatered options.

Costs • Our Brighton halls of residence range from around £121–£193 per week, depending on provisions and size. • Rent includes insurance and utility bills. • The cost of catered halls includes breakfast and evening meals Monday– Friday during term time. • Rent also includes free off-peak membership of university fitness facilities.

• Most contracts last for 39 weeks, with some lasting 50 weeks. • There is no deposit to pay. We also work closely with landlords and letting agents in the city to reserve flats and houses exclusively for our students. All of these properties have been inspected by the accommodation team and meet all UK housing safety standards.

UNIHOMES

We have around 140 places in universitymanaged Unihomes. Unihomes vary in size but usually have four to five bedrooms with shared bathroom facilities, kitchen and communal areas. They’re great if you prefer to live in the wider community, close to local amenities and facilities. Rooms are let on individual contracts which run from September to August.

I decided that I would like to rent in the city centre while I did my degree. I contacted the accommodation team for some advice and got some good tips for renting as a student. The bus route to Falmer is great so I’ve always found it easy getting to and from lectures, and as my course has placements I wanted to make sure I could get around easily. LIVING IN EASTBOURNE In Eastbourne you’ll benefit from a close-knit community where you’ll never be far from the beach, South Downs National Park or the town itself. It is a sunny and friendly place to live with lots to do, including music and arts festivals, shopping, theatres, galleries and sports. HALLS OF RESIDENCE

Our Eastbourne halls are in the residential Meads area, next to the Hillbrow and Welkin site and within walking distance of Darley Road. The train station is about 20-minutes walk away. There are 350 places in halls of residence in Eastbourne as well as a number of rooms in Unihomes for returning students. Almost all Eastbourne students who apply for a place, live in halls in their first year, while private rented accommodation is readily available to those who prefer the independence this offers.

There are careers centres on every campus. They provide careers guidance, information, training and practical help with finding job vacancies (for parttime work while you’re studying as well as graduate positions), internships, placements and volunteer work. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Your academic grades are important, but other things count too. We look at lots of factors to make sure that everyone is given an equal opportunity to show their achievements. Some students are also asked to take part in an interview. We consider all applications very carefully including personal statements, references and work experience, as well as exam results and predicted grades. English language entry requirements Our degree courses are delivered and assessed in English. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and the university need you to meet their English language requirements for your chosen course. Please check individual course information to find out the English language entry requirements that apply to you. UKVI requires prospective students who have not studied and been examined in English to provide evidence they have met the language requirement through a secure English language test (SELT), with an approved test provider. This evidence is required before we can issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number. SELT results are only valid for two years from the time the test is taken. You can’t apply for a Tier 4 visa using test results older than two years.

If you receive an offer from us it will be marked conditional or unconditional.

Accepting your offer

We will communicate our decision to offer you a place on a course and any conditions attached to that offer through your applicant area and through UCAS.

A conditional offer may be subject to you obtaining certain grades or qualifications or made subject to you supplying some additional information, such as the result of an English language test.

Our international student advisers are qualified to give advice and representation on UK immigration law. They will support you throughout the application process and can advise you on the requirements of obtaining a student visa (Tier 4 or short-term study), and how to apply. Our international student advisers can also advise you on making an application to extend your visa in the UK if necessary.

At the beginning of the academic year you will need to complete enrolment – this entitles you to attend your course, use university facilities and join the Students’ Union.

After you have firmly accepted your offer, we will send you an email to invite you to apply for your accommodation.

Issuing your CAS In order to request your CAS number you’ll need to accept your unconditional offer, pay the tuition fee deposit (if required) and complete the CAS questionnaire. A CAS is a virtual document that the UK Home Office will view through a secure online system when you make your application for a student (Tier 4) visa. You will need the CAS number to make your visa application.

To complete enrolment you will need original documentation (not photocopies) confirming your identity including your passport and visa or biometric residence permit, entry qualifications and written confirmation of your scholarship or sponsor, if you have one.

Personal details We may need to ask you for further information before your enrolment can be completed. The university is registered with the Office of the Information Commissioner. To prevent fraudulent applications we may disclose information to relevant government departments, police forces, examining bodies and associated authorities. 111

DISCOUNTS 10% alumni discount Graduates of the university can apply for a 10% discount on their annual tuition fees if they’re a registered member of the University of Brighton Alumni Association. Gatwick international airport is half an hour by train from Brighton, with Eastbourne 30 minutes further along the coast. Heathrow international airport has a direct coach link to Brighton via Gatwick or you can take the underground from Heathrow to London Victoria for trains and coaches to Brighton and Eastbourne.

Train journey times from London range from 50–90 minutes. Trains run along the south coast and link Brighton with Hove, Worthing and Portsmouth to the west and Lewes, Eastbourne and Hastings to the east.

You can reach us by ferry – travelling to Dover, Newhaven or Portsmouth from France. The Eurostar train also offers travel to London or Ashford International from France, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands and Switzerland.
