Foundation Degree in Management www.chiuni.ac.uk/semal
What is the Foundation Degree in Management? This is a part-time study programme designed to address the needs of employees newly appointed to a management or supervisory role or aspiring to go further with their management careers. It will equip participants to understand the nature of the organisation in which they work, the challenges they face, and how they might enhance their own performance in their chosen careers. The FDM offers a mix of academic and practical work that encourages participants to develop their knowledge and also their managerial skills. By following a structured programme of development they can also obtain a qualification that is accredited by the University of Chichester. Employers and individuals can select from three options: • The full FD programme – for people seeking a longer terms commitment to their development • Individual modules – for specific subject knowledge or skills development • Individual workshop sessions- for ‘just in time’ development to address a specific business challenge Each taught module requires participants to attend 3 workshop days; a typical workshop day would run from 9.00 to 4.00 and include lunch/refreshments. Sessions will normally be held at our newly refurbished Bognor Regis Campuses or off site if required/preferred.
“Being able to combine study with my job and work towards a recognised qualification for me has been key. Basing modules around work scenarios has been good although there is a considerable amount of time required to study outside of work.” Mandy Stevens, past student
What will a student get from the FDM? The FDM starts with the creation of an individual development plan that will cater for the business sponsors needs and the individual’s interests and abilities. The programme is then designed to give flexibility for example, students can exit at various stages with a nationally recognised qualification (see the diagram below for the detail). Because students are be supported by their employer all the way, they should relate study to real work situations, raise their profile at work and see quick, clear results from their learning. Students will work in small numbers with experienced tutors and other students to encourage development in a challenging but supportive environment. The three things students will directly gain from the FDM are; enhanced knowledge, improved confidence and greater employability. We are working closely with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), the UK Leading accreditation body for professional managers, so that, if desired, students will qualify for a CMI award or Certificate if they complete the relevant assessments, and pay an additional fee.
What will an employer get from the FDM? From the employers perspective this is a fantastic, cost effective opportunity to develop your managers. They will work on real business issues and bring external perspectives directly to bear on your organisation’s performance. Where an employer places a number of employees on the FDM we would expect to see them develop significantly as a team as well as individuals.
“I have really enjoyed the course. The modules have been varied and interesting and I have been able to relate my work and assignments to the subjects covered in the lectures. The tutors are helpful and supportive with different lecturing styles, so there is something to suit everyone! I would recommend the course to others.” Catherine Fielder, past student
How will the modules be taught? SEMAL (The University School of Enterprise, Management and Leadership) implements a fully student centred approach. Teaching will mostly take place on the Bognor Campus of the University in ‘The Dome’ a newly refurbished Georgian building. For employee groups we can undertake teaching off site if appropriate. All delivery sessions will be interactive, challenging and stimulating. Technology will be used to fully enhance the learning experience.
How will I be assessed? Each module will have an associated assessment, which is key to the participant’s development. These will be practical exercises focused on the application of knowledge acquired to the participants’ working environment.
Progression after the FDM? You can progress to Level 3 of the BA Hons Business Studies degree course. Alternatively, you may be able to use your FDM as partial credit towards a professional qualification
“I was enrolled on the FDM by my line manager as part of my ongoing personal development. The structure of the course is designed to have minimal impact on our working lives with most modules being three one day workshops spread out over the semester, this works really well and is one of the big pluses on the course.” Tracy Vine, past student

You will learn how to relate theory to practice and employ appropriate evidence to demonstrate understanding
When does the FDM start? The FDM runs on a calendar year basis with the modules starting in February, May and September (see the programme structure for details).
How much does it cost? For 2011 the tuition costs per module will be approximately ÂŁ500 which your company or you can pay prior to the commencement of each module. Discounts may be available for investing in multiple registrations from the same organisation, please consult the Programme Co-ordinator for details.
“The benefits of the course have been immediately realised and are contributing directly to our business through awareness of new topics and enhanced management skill sets. The module choice offered by the University enabled us to select and design the course around the needs of our business which was a very attractive attribute and major contributing factor in our selection process. Bruce Hollobone, General Manager - EAME, Measurement Systems, Cameron Group
