We recognise the important contribution that our international students make, facilitating a shared understanding between countries and helping to develop an international awareness for future employability in a globalised world. The diversity of experience and outlooks from our international students help to form exciting scholarly activity based around achievement, open-mindedness and academic excellence. We have a network of collaborative exchanges with university partners all over the world, and regularly welcome students from institutions in Japan, Korea, the United States and Canada to study part of their degrees with us. We also help our students to experience other countries and cultures through our exchange, Study Abroad, and Socrates Erasmus programmes. We also regularly travel overseas to teach and offer English language courses delivered in a number of countries. The University and our student body are active and committed participants in this activity. Each year many students from Europe and Turkey come to the University to study, and in exchange many University of Chichester students grasp the opportunity to experience other cultures and countries. Our reciprocal exchanges with partner universities throughout the world enables our students to study part of their course overseas, and for us to host students in return. If you wish to study part of your course under the Erasmus or Exchange programme, please contact us and we will advise you if this is possible under the current exchanges we hold.
Our international community

Fortunately, as well as having friendly approachable staff who are always ready to help, we have a complete range of support services for international students. These are available to help you adjust as seamlessly as possible, and ensure you realise your full academic potential, while getting the most out of all that the UK has to offer in your free time. This includes extra tutorial support, social activities, English assessment and extra time and the use of dictionaries in exams. This service is entirely free of charge.
How we will support you and Helping you with your English
Supporting you with your English language needs during your programme is important to us. It will help you to get the most of your studies, university life, and future career.
We offer an English language programme (International English Studies) and an academic and language support package to all our students for whom English is not a first language. What is IALS? • IALS is an essential and distinctive feature of the support we offer our international students. • It is a package specially designed to support international students for whom English is not a first language and/or those who have not previously been educated in the UK. • The support runs alongside your regular programme, at undergraduate or postgraduate level, and across all subjects. How does the support help? We recognise that international students may face special challenges when they enter UK university education. • IALS offers you specialised help with the development of your English language skills and with their use in a UK academic environment. • It supports you in making the transition to study in a new academic culture.
What does the package offer? • A two-day orientation programme • A language profiling service so that you, and your department(s), may be advised on the best options for language support. • Individual tutorial support, (up to three hours per student, per semester) to help you plan, carry out and check assessed work. • Social gatherings, excursions and other informal contact with international students. • English language classes (if you are not already taking the BA International English Studies programme as part of your studies; see page 30). • The use of extra time and bilingual dictionaries in University examinations. • A regular point of contact with a member of staff who can supply answers to your questions about academic life in the UK. How will I know which services to use? • You will have a regular tutor who will advise you throughout your studies. • You can, if you wish, stop using the support at any point in your studies. As an international student, you will automatically be enrolled when you begin your studies at the University and the services are provided at no extra cost to you. ............................................. Where you’ll be socialising There’s a lot to enjoy about living in the UK, and socialising during your studies is seen as an important part of a British university education.
This is because the friends and networks you make at university help you develop and grow throughout your study and stay with you throughout your life. You will have a wide range of opportunities to meet people, not only in class, but at events organised by the University and Students’ Union; and, when using the sport and recreational facilities on campus. Free orientation and welcome party As an international student you will be invited to the free international party and orientation programme before the beginning of your course. This is a great opportunity to get to meet staff, and get to know other students. Also, look out for international events held throughout the year, such as guided trips, visits and social events.
24
Students’ Union The Students’ Union (SU) is a long established and important part of campus life in the UK. The SU is an actual trade union that campaigns for your rights as a student, and can provide practical help and support to students. As well as student organised clubs and societies, the SU is also responsible for running the entertainment and events that students have access to throughout the year. The SU licensed bars and canteens offer subsidised refreshments throughout the week, and well into the evening. Elected representatives manage the various parts of the SU remit, and all students are free to run and campaign for election. There is an international student officer who deals especially with overseas students and their representation within the University’s student body.

The Programme is open to all those for whom English is not a first or main working language. It is specially tailored for those who intend to study at the University of Chichester and who need to improve academic and language skills by the equivalent of 0.5 of an IELTS grade. The Programme is also open to you if, for other reasons, you wish to improve your academic language and study skills before beginning a degree programme in the medium of English. When and where is the Programme? • The Pre-Sessional Programme runs from the beginning of July to August over seven weeks. Please see website for exact dates. • The Programme is delivered on our Bognor Regis campus. What will I gain from the Programme? • Personal language development including academic English related to your future degree programme • Relevant study skills for a UK university education • Experience of studying a university-level module • Experience of studying with UK university learning and teaching approaches and resources • Individual guidance on your progress and personal development strategies • Opportunities to learn and socialise with those with similar aims from a variety of international backgrounds.
The Programme is delivered using small group workshops, individual tutorials and guided self and group study. It is delivered by a small specialist team of tutors who regularly teach on Chichester undergraduate and graduate programmes and are experienced in working with international students. There are three main elements to the programme: Language development, academic skills development and a study module. You will also need to put in approximately one additional hour of self-study for each hour you spend in class to complete the Programme successfully. Assessment is included within the three main elements of the Programme. You will need to show, in each element, that, by the end of the Programme, you have reached the level of language competence you need to begin your degree studies at the University of Chichester. Provided this is the case, the University will, on completion of the Programme, then confirm your offer as unconditional. To apply, complete the EU/International application form at: www.chi.ac.uk/ international/applyinginternational.cfm and tick the box for the Pre-sessional Programme. ............................................. International English Studies International English Studies (IES) is a three-year BA degree programme specially designed for students for whom English is not a first or main language, and who wish to complete a degree in their chosen subject with integrated English and study skills support.
For example, you could study Business as your chosen degree subject, and have the opportunity to have additional English and study skills support by combining your degree with IES. This means you can: • Start your degree with an IELTS score of 5.5 (minimum) • Gain additional English and study skills support • Complete your degree with single honours in your chosen subject if you wish. • Complete your degree in just three years. • Have flexibility depending on personal preferences, needs and progress. • Be assessed and advised on making appropriate choices. How does it work? You will first be assessed to see how much English support you need. Then, for example, in Year 1 you might study the Joint Route: • 50% International English Studies • 50% Academic Subject • And then in Years 2 and 3, you have a choice of one of three routes: 1) You can continue with the Joint Route (50%/50%) 2) You can take the Major/Minor Route and study: 75% Academic Subject and 25% International English Studies 3) You can take the Embedded Route and study: 100% Academic Subject with integrated English Support.

The cost of living and studying at Chichester The cost of living and studying will depend on the type of course you are studying and where and how you choose to live.
You will either be studying a ‘laboratory-based course’ which means that specialist equipment or resources are required to deliver your course, or a ‘classroom-based course’. Laboratory-based courses are £9990 per year, and classroom-based courses are approximately £8755 per year. In addition to this you should budget to pay for core books for your course, and any other special equipment you may need. How much this will be varies, and some students spend much more than others. Please contact us, or visit the website, for up-to-date information about the cost of your chosen course. We also have people who can advise you on how to manage your finances while studying at the University of Chichester. www.chi.ac.uk/applying/TuitionFees.cfm
The cost of living How much you will need to spend during your study can vary considerably. It will depend on: • Where you choose to live • The cost of utility bills and basic subsistence needs • How much you choose spend on socialising and entertainment • How much travel you want to do in the UK and Europe The British Council estimate you will need about £5400 for each nine month academic year, although this is a rough estimate. Uniaid have developed a helpful online budget calculator to help you work out how much money you will have to spend. www.studentcalculator.org.uk/international
