SPRING TOUR 2012

“A terrific evening of contemporary dance there were lots of really positive comments from the sell out audience afterwards Jane Scorer, Devizes Festival Committee

SPRING TOUR 2012 Celebrating its 6th year, mapdance is one of the leading postgraduate dance companies in the UK. Recruiting dancers nationally and internationally mapdance commissions new repertoire from renowned and upcoming contemporary choreographers and directors. This year the company has new works by Nigel Charnock, Matteo Fargion and Saju Hari. As well as recreating Keira Martin’s popular piece Strange Journey (2010) the company will also work with their director Detta Howe to remake Bubble, a solo created on herself in 2011. Ranging in style and emotion, mapdance’s programme offers a diverse and refreshing mixture of dance theatre, lyrical choreography, punchy physicality and intriguing humour. It is a mixed bill that offers something for everyone. Nigel Charnock: XX XX is a new piece for mapdance by dance iconoclast Nigel Charnock. Exploring the heaven and hell of relationships between men and women and women and women, XX combines words, music and movement to create passionately human dance theatre. XX: (genetics) normal complement of sex chromosomes in a female. Matteo Fargion: Wrong Songs Matteo is well known for composing music, dance and for his collaborations with Jonathan Burrows and Siobhan Davies. His new work for map involves singing, shouting, making sounds, folk dancing and arm waving. It doesn’t involve improvising, using the space in interesting ways or moving beautifully. Wrong Songs works with structure and time, and explores ways to hold the attention of an audience so that they care what happens next.

Saju Hari: Edges Edges explores a hybrid movement language that reflects Saju’s exposure to the South Asian martial art Kalarippayattu and the influence of South Asian dance forms. Both abstract and physical, poetic and hard hitting, this work will intrigue, inspire and keep you on the edge of your seat Detta Howe: See … Listen … Here Three short pieces capturing a moment in music. Each dance has a dialogue with a movement from Bach’s Cello Suite No1 and invites the audience to hear the movement, see the sound and enjoy the moment. Keira Martin: Strange Journey (2010) Irish dance and music has its roots based firmly in tales and tradition and is expressed through the medium of family and community gatherings; in this way it has been passed down from generation to generation. Strange Journey seeks to express the self same spirit of story and sentiment evoking the Celtic past of struggle, joy, love, travel and loss, at the same time fusing with contemporary influences to give a lively and absorbing experience.
