Music Academy

The University of Chichester is delighted to be able to offer an exciting new opportunity for young musicians living in the South of England. The University of Chichester Music Academy (UCMA) is a specialist junior academy aimed at gifted and talented musicians between the ages of 8-18. It offers an opportunity to become a junior member of the university for students who may wish to pursue their musical studies to a high level. The university recognises the importance of nurturing and training our young musicians. By placing a junior academy in the South, the university, which boasts one of the largest specialist music departments in the country, demonstrates its commitment to the development of emerging talent.

What we offer UCMA will run during academic semesters (approximately September to December, and January to May) on Saturdays, based in the University music department, which is a short walk from the ancient city of Chichester. Students of the academy will work with highly qualified staff, with the support of undergraduate students, and receive a programme of musical training designed to enhance and complement their existing instrumental or vocal tuition. Through this training, students will gain not just ensemble experience at a high level but also a broad musical grounding in a range of areas essential to holistic musical development. Every young musician is individual in their needs, and where appropriate, students of the academy will also be able to access additional activities, ensembles and workshops which run on weekday evenings – working alongside, and inspired by undergraduate music students.

Are instrumental lessons included? Pupils may apply to have lessons at the University during the week from one of the team of specialist teachers. However, in most cases UCMA aims to work in partnership with pupils’ existing instrumental teachers, as we appreciate that many students will already be receiving high quality instrumental tuition.

Additional benefits Students of UCMA become junior members of the University and as such receive free access to a varied programme of concerts and performances. Older students of the Academy will also be able to access the University’s extensive library.

Students of the academy will receive an intensive and stimulating programme of musical activites. This will vary depending on the skills and specialisms of each cohort of learners, but typical activities will include: •Ensembles •Singing/vocal skills •Composition/improvisation skills •Theory/aural training •History •Performance practice Composition and history sessions will cover much of the GCSE syllabus and contain elements to support the A level syllabus. Singing, theory and aural training will support students who are candidates for higher grade (VI-VIII) practical examinations.
